Abstract:The development of mathematics has been characterized by the increasing interconnectivity of seemingly separate disciplines. Such interplay has been facilitated by a massive development in formalism; category theory has provided a common language to the study of mathematics. In the opposite direction, we have seen algebraic topology and category theory synthesize via higher category theory. In this expository paper, we examine an application of higher category theory to geometry through the development of simplicial rings and derived schemes.

Abstract:<p>We give a formulation for derived analytic geometry built from commutative differential graded algebras equipped with entire functional calculus on their degree 0 part, a theory well-suited to developing shifted Poisson structures and quantisations. In the complex setting, we show that this formulation recovers equivalent derived analytic spaces and stacks to those coming from Lurie's structured topoi. In non-Archimedean settings, there is a similar comparison, but for derived dagger analytic spaces and stacks, based on overconvergent functions.</p>

Derived $C^{\infty}$-Geometry I: Foundations

Abstract:This work is the first in a series laying the foundations of derived geometry in the $C^{\infty}$ setting, and providing tools for the construction and study of moduli spaces of solutions of Partial Differential Equations that arise in differential geometry and mathematical physics. To advertise the advantages of such a theory, we start with a detailed introduction to derived $C^{\infty}$-geometry in the context of symplectic topology and compare and contrast with Kuranishi space theory. In the body of this work, we avail ourselves of Lurie's extensive work on abstract structured spaces to define $\infty$-categories of derived $C^{\infty}$-rings and $C^{\infty}$-schemes and derived $C^{\infty}$-rings and $C^{\infty}$-schemes with corners via a universal property in a suitable $(\infty,2)$-category of $\infty$-categories with respect to the ordinary categories of manifolds and manifolds with corners (with morphisms the $b$-maps of Melrose in the latter case), and prove many basic structural features about them. Along the way, we establish some derived flatness results for derived $C^{\infty}$-rings of independent interest.

Abstract:We propose a derived version of non-archimedean analytic geometry. Intuitively, a derived non-archimedean analytic space consists of an ordinary non-archimedean analytic space equipped with a sheaf of derived rings. Such a naive definition turns out to be insufficient. In this paper, we resort to the theory of pregeometries and structured topoi introduced by Jacob Lurie. We prove the following three fundamental properties of derived non-archimedean analytic spaces:The category of ordinary non-archimedean analytic spaces embeds fully faithfully into the ∞$$\infty $$-category of derived non-archimedean analytic spaces.The ∞$$\infty $$-category of derived non-archimedean analytic spaces admits fiber products.The ∞$$\infty $$-category of higher non-archimedean analytic Deligne–Mumford stacks embeds fully faithfully into the ∞$$\infty $$-category of derived non-archimedean analytic spaces. The essential image of this embedding is spanned by n-localic discrete derived non-archimedean analytic spaces. We will further develop the theory of derived non-archimedean analytic geometry in our subsequent works. Our motivations mainly come from intersection theory, enumerative geometry and mirror symmetry.

Abstract:We show that the derived center of the category of simplicial algebras over every algebraic theory is homotopically discrete, with the abelian monoid of components isomorphic to the center of the category of discrete algebras. For example, in the case of commutative algebras in characteristic $p$, this center is freely generated by Frobenius. Our proof involves the calculation of homotopy coherent centers of categories of simplicial presheaves as well as of Bousfield localizations. Numerous other classes of examples are discussed.

Abstract:We continue the explorations of derived \canal geometry started in [DAG-IX] and in http://arxiv.org/abs/1506.09042. We describe the category of $\mathcal O_X$-modules over a derived complex analytic space $X$ as the stabilization of a suitable category of analytic algebras over $\mathcal O_X$. Finally, we apply this description to introduce the notion of analytic square-zero extension and prove a fundamental structure theorem for them.

Abstract:This is a foundation for algebraic geometry, developed internal to the Zariski topos, building on the work of Kock and Blechschmidt. The Zariski topos consists of sheaves on the site opposite to the category of finitely presented algebras over a fixed ring, with the Zariski topology, i.e. generating covers are given by localization maps $A\to A_{f_1}$ for finitely many elements $f_1,\dots,f_n$ that generate the ideal $(1)=A\subseteq A$. We use homotopy type theory together with three axioms as the internal language of a (higher) Zariski topos. One of our main contributions is the use of higher types -- in the homotopical sense -- to define and reason about cohomology. Actually computing cohomology groups, seems to need a principle along the lines of our ``Zariski local choice'' axiom, which we justify as well as the other axioms using a cubical model of homotopy type theory.

Derived deformation theory of algebraic structures

Abstract:The main purpose of this article is to develop an explicit derived deformation theory of algebraic structures at a high level of generality, encompassing in a common framework various kinds of algebras (associative, commutative, Poisson...) or bialgebras (associative and coassociative, Lie, Frobenius...), that is algebraic structures parametrized by props. A central aspect is that we define and study moduli spaces of deformations of algebraic structures up to quasi-isomorphisms (and not just isotopies or isomorphisms). To do so, we implement methods coming from derived algebraic geometry, by encapsulating these deformation theories as classifying (pre)stacks with good infinitesimal properties and derived formal geometry, by means of derived formal moduli problems and derived formal groups. In particular, we prove that the Lie algebra describing the deformation theory of an object in a given $\infty$-category of dg algebras can be obtained equivalently as the tangent complex of loops on a derived quotient of this moduli space by the homotopy automorphims of this object. Moreover, we provide explicit formulae for such derived deformation problems of algebraic structures up to quasi-isomorphisms and relate them in a precise way to other standard deformation problems of algebraic structures. This relation is given by a fiber sequence of the associated dg-Lie algebras of their deformation complexes. Our results provide simultaneously a vast generalization of standard deformation theory of algebraic structures which is suitable (and needed) to set up algebraic deformation theory both at the $\infty$-categorical level and at a higher level of generality than algebras over operads. In addition, we study a general criterion to compare formal moduli problems of different algebraic structures and apply our formalism to $E_n$-algebras and bialgebras.

Abstract:We shall describe a simple generalization of commutative rings. The category GR of such "rings", contains the ordinary commutative rings (fully faithfully), but also the "integers" and "residue field" at a real or complex place of a field ; the "field with one element" (the initial object of GR ); the "arithmetical surface" ( the sum in the category GR of the integers with them self: Z(x)Z ) . We shall show that this geometry "see" the real and complex places of a number field (there is an Ostrowski theorem that the valuation sub-GR of a number field correspond to the finite and infinite primes; there is a compactification of the spectrum of the integers ). One can develop algebraic geometry using GR following Grothendieck paradigm . Quillen's homotopical algebra replaces homological algebra . There is an analogue of Quillen's cotangent bundle - in particular there is a theory of non-additive derivations, with modules of Kahler differentials which satisfy all the usual exact sequences - we compute explicitly the differentials of the integers Z over the initial object F1 . Finally we associate with any topological compact valuation GR a meromorphic function - its "zeta" : for the p-adic integers we get the p-local factor of zeta, for the "real integers" we get the gamma factor.

Abstract:We develop foundations for abstract homotopy theory based on Grothendieck's idea of a "derivator". The theory is model-independent, and does not depend on model categories, nor on simplicial sets. It is designed to accomodate all the usual potential applications, such as e.g. enhancements for derived categories of coherent sheaves, in a way that is as close as possible to usual category theory.

Abstract:We develop the theory of derived differential geometry in terms of bundles of curved $L_\infty[1]$-algebras, i.e. dg manifolds of positive amplitudes. We prove the category of derived manifolds is a category of fibrant objects. Therefore, we can make sense of "homotopy fibered product" and "derived intersection" of submaifolds in a smooth manifold in the homotopy category of derived manifolds. We construct a factorization of the diagonal using path spaces. First we construct an infinite-dimensional factorization using actual path spaces motivated by the AKSZ construction, then we cut down to finite dimensions using the Fiorenza-Manetti method. The main ingredient is the homotopy transfer theorem for curved $L_\infty[1]$-algebras. We also prove the inverse function theorem for derived manifolds, and investigate the relationship between weak equivalence and quasi-isomorphism for derived manifolds.

Abstract:We investigate the properties of pure derived categories of module categories, and show that pure derived categories share many nice properties of classical derived categories. In particular, we show that bounded pure derived categories can be realized as certain homotopy categories. We introduce the pure projective (resp. injective) dimension of complexes in pure derived categories, and give some criteria for computing these dimensions in terms of the properties of pure projective (resp. injective) resolutions and pure derived functors. As a consequence, we get some equivalent characterizations for the finiteness of the pure global dimension of rings. Finally, pure projective (resp. injective) resolutions of unbounded complexes are considered.

Abstract:This manuscript develops a geometric approach to ordinary cohomology of smooth manifolds, constructing a cochain complex model based on co-oriented smooth maps from manifolds with corners. Special attention is given to the pull-back product of such smooth maps, which provides our geometric cochains with a partially defined product structure inducing the cup product in cohomology. A parallel treatment of homology is also given allowing for a geometric unification of the contravariant and covariant theories.

Abstract:In this paper, we expand the foundations of derived complex analytic geometry introduced in [DAG-IX] by J. Lurie. We start by studying the analytification functor and its properties. In particular, we prove that for a derived complex scheme locally almost of finite presentation $X$, the canonical map $X^{\mathrm{an}} \to X$ is flat in the derived sense. Next, we provide a comparison result relating derived complex analytic spaces to geometric stacks. Using these results and building on the previous work arXiv:1412.5166, we prove a derived version of the GAGA theorems. As an application, we prove that the infinitesimal deformation theory of a derived complex analytic moduli problem is governed by a differential graded Lie algebra.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate homologically finite-dimensional objects in the derived category of a given small dg-enhanced triangulated category. Using these we define reflexivity, hfd-closedness, and the Gorenstein property for triangulated categories, and discuss crepant categorical contractions. We illustrate the introduced notions on examples of categories of geometric and algebraic origin and provide geometric applications. In particular, we apply our results to prove a bijection between semiorthogonal decompositions of the derived category of a singular variety and the derived category of its smoothing with support on the central fiber.

Abstract:We prove the representability theorem in derived analytic geometry. The theorem asserts that an analytic moduli functor is a derived analytic stack if and only if it is compatible with Postnikov towers, has a global analytic cotangent complex, and its truncation is an analytic stack. Our result applies to both derived complex analytic geometry and derived non-archimedean analytic geometry (rigid analytic geometry). The representability theorem is of both philosophical and practical importance in derived geometry. The conditions of representability are natural expectations for a moduli functor. So the theorem confirms that the notion of derived analytic space is natural and sufficiently general. On the other hand, the conditions are easy to verify in practice. So the theorem enables us to enhance various classical moduli spaces with derived structures, thus provides plenty of down-to-earth examples of derived analytic spaces. For the purpose of proof, we study analytification, square-zero extensions, analytic modules and cotangent complexes in the context of derived analytic geometry. We will explore applications of the representability theorem in our subsequent works. In particular, we will establish the existence of derived mapping stacks via the representability theorem.

A type theory for synthetic $\infty$-categories

Abstract:We propose foundations for a synthetic theory of $(\infty,1)$-categories within homotopy type theory. We axiomatize a directed interval type, then define higher simplices from it and use them to probe the internal categorical structures of arbitrary types. We define Segal types, in which binary composites exist uniquely up to homotopy; this automatically ensures composition is coherently associative and unital at all dimensions. We define Rezk types, in which the categorical isomorphisms are additionally equivalent to the type-theoretic identities - a "local univalence" condition. And we define covariant fibrations, which are type families varying functorially over a Segal type, and prove a "dependent Yoneda lemma" that can be viewed as a directed form of the usual elimination rule for identity types. We conclude by studying homotopically correct adjunctions between Segal types, and showing that for a functor between Rezk types to have an adjoint is a mere proposition. To make the bookkeeping in such proofs manageable, we use a three-layered type theory with shapes, whose contexts are extended by polytopes within directed cubes, which can be abstracted over using "extension types" that generalize the path-types of cubical type theory. In an appendix, we describe the motivating semantics in the Reedy model structure on bisimplicial sets, in which our Segal and Rezk types correspond to Segal spaces and complete Segal spaces.

Non-additive derived functors via chain resolutions

Abstract:Let $F\colon \mathcal{C} \to \mathcal{E}$ be a functor from a category $\mathcal{C}$ to a homological (Borceux-Bourn) or semi-abelian (Janelidze-Márki-Tholen) category $\mathcal{E}$. We investigate conditions under which the homology of an object $X$ in $\mathcal{C}$ with coefficients in the functor $F$, defined via projective resolutions in $\mathcal{C}$, remains independent of the chosen resolution. Consequently, the left derived functors of $F$ can be constructed analogously to the classical abelian case. Our approach extends the concept of chain homotopy to a non-additive setting using the technique of imaginary morphisms. Specifically, we utilize the approximate subtractions of Bourn-Janelidze, originally introduced in the context of subtractive categories. This method is applicable when $\mathcal{C}$ is a pointed regular category with finite coproducts and enough projectives, provided these projectives are closed under protosplit subobjects, a new condition introduced in this article and naturally satisfied in the abelian context. We further assume that the functor $F$ meets certain exactness conditions: for instance, it may be protoadditive and preserve proper morphisms and binary coproducts - conditions that amount to additivity when $\mathcal{C}$ and $\mathcal{E}$ are abelian categories. Within this framework, we develop a basic theory of derived functors, compare it with the simplicial approach, and provide several examples.

Abstract:We formulate a simple model for the bounded derived category of gentle algebras in terms of marked ribbon graphs and their walks, in order to analyze indecomposable objects, Auslander-Reiten triangles and homological bilinear forms, and to provide some relevant derived invariants in a graph theoretic setting. Among others, we exhibit the non-negativity and Dynkin type of the homological quadratic form of a gentle algebra, describe its roots as the classes of indecomposable perfect complexes in the Grothendieck group, and express its Coxeter polynomial in terms of the Avella-Alaminos Geiss invariant. We also derive some consequences for Brauer graph algebras.
