Abstract:The rapid development of quantum science and technology is leading us into an era where quantum many-body systems can be comprehended through quantum simulations. Holographic duality, which states gravity and spacetime can emerge from strongly interacting systems, then offers a natural avenue for the experimental study of gravity physics without delving into experimentally infeasible high energies. A prominent example is the simulation of traversable wormholes through the wormhole teleportation protocol, attracting both theoretical and experimental attention. In this work, we develop the theoretical framework for computing the fidelity of wormhole teleportation in $N$-qubit systems with all-to-all interactions, quantified by mutual information and entanglement negativity. The main technique is the scramblon effective theory, which captures universal out-of-time-order correlations in generic chaotic systems. We clarify that strong couplings between the two systems are essential for simulating the probe limit of semi-classical traversable wormholes using strongly interacting systems with near-maximal chaos. However, the teleportation signal diminishes rapidly when reducing the system size $N$, requiring a large number of qubits to observe a sharp signature of emergent geometry by simulating the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model. This includes both the causal time-order of signals and the asymmetry of the teleportation signal for coupling with different signs. As a comparison, the teleportation signal increases when reducing $N$ in weakly interacting systems. We also analyze the fidelity of the generalized encoding scheme in fermionic string operators.

Abstract:Open quantum systems and study of decoherence are important for our fundamental understanding of quantum physical phenomena. For practical purposes, there exists a large number of quantum protocols exploiting quantum resources, e.g. entanglement, which allows to go beyond what is possible to achieve by classical means. We combine concepts from open quantum systems and quantum information science, and give a proof-of-principle experimental demonstration -- with teleportation -- that it is possible to implement efficiently a quantum protocol via non-Markovian open system. The results show that, at the time of implementation of the protocol, it is not necessary to have the quantum resource in the degree of freedom used for the basic protocol -- as long as there exists some other degree of freedom, or environment of an open system, which contains useful resources. The experiment is based on a pair of photons, where their polarizations act as open system qubits and frequencies as their environments -- while the path degree of freedom of one of the photons represents the state of Alice's qubit to be teleported to Bob's polarization qubit.

Abstract:We observe that the comment of [1, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2302.07897" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2302.07897">arXiv:2302.07897</a>] is consistent with [2] on key points: i) the microscopic mechanism of the experimentally observed teleportation is size winding and ii) the system thermalizes and scrambles at the time of teleportation. These properties are consistent with a gravitational interpretation of the teleportation dynamics, as opposed to the late-time dynamics. The objections of [1] concern counterfactual scenarios outside of the experimentally implemented protocol.

Abstract:Quantum teleportation 1 is central to the practical realization of quantum communication 2 , 3 . Although the first proof-of-principle demonstration was reported in 1997 by the Innsbruck 4 and Rome groups 5 , long-distance teleportation has so far only been realized in fibre with lengths of hundreds of metres 6 , 7 . An optical free-space link is highly desirable for extending the transfer distance, because of its low atmospheric absorption for certain ranges of wavelength. By following the Rome scheme 5 , which allows a full Bell-state measurement, we report free-space implementation of quantum teleportation over 16 km. An active feed-forward technique has been developed to enable real-time information transfer. An average fidelity of 89%, well beyond the classical limit of 2/3, is achieved. Our experiment has realized all of the non-local aspects of the original teleportation scheme and is equivalent to it up to a local unitary operation 5 . Our result confirms the feasibility of space-based experiments, and is an important step towards quantum-communication applications on a global scale.

Abstract:We propose a new information transfer protocol for de Sitter space, using black holes as energy reservoirs. We consider antipodal observers in pure de Sitter space in the Bunch-Davis state. They can store Hawking modes from the cosmological horizon in a box. Alternatively, due to thermal fluctuations in de Sitter space, pair-creation black holes can proceed and form the needed energy reservoir. We focus on the Nariai case, corresponding to an equilibrium state. Once it happens, energy pulses can be then released into the black hole's interior, opening a traversable wormhole. We provide bounds for the amount of information that can be transferred. Specializing to (1+1)-dimensions, we explore how the teleportation protocol leads to an explicit geometric description of the information transmitted through an island region. The protocol uncovers quantum information aspects of de Sitter space, independent of a particular realization of de Sitter space holography.

Abstract:In the field of quantum communication the teleportation(1) of single quanta plays a fundamental role in numerous quantum information-processing protocols. Quantum teleportation allows to faithfully transfer unknown quantum states over arbitrary distances and constitutes a method to circumvent the no-cloning theorem(2). Even formally completely independent particles can become entangled via the process of entanglement swapping(3). In a future quantum communication network(4) this will be of utmost importance, enabling quantum computers to become globally interconnected. In order to prove the feasibility of quantum teleportation under optical link attenuations that will arise in a future space-application scenario, we extended the communication distance to 143 km, employing an optical free-space link between the two Canary Islands of La Palma and Tenerife. This work proofs the feasibility of ground-based free-space quantum teleportation. With our setup we were able to achieve coincidence production rates and fidelities to cope with the optical link attenuation, resulting from various experimental and technical challenges, which will arise in a quantum transmission between a ground-based transmitter and a low-earth-orbiting satellite receiver(5). In our experiment we gained an average state fidelity for the teleported quantum states of more than 6 standard deviations beyond the classical limit of 2/3 and a process fidelity of 0.710(42). We expect that many of the features implemented in this experiment will be key blocks for future investigations.

Abstract:Quantum teleportation provides a way to transmit unknown quantum states from one location to another. In the quantum world, multilevel systems which enable high-dimensional systems are more prevalent. Therefore, to completely rebuild the quantum states of a single particle remotely, one needs to teleport multilevel (high-dimensional) states. Here, we demonstrate the teleportation of high-dimensional states in a three-dimensional six-photon system. We exploit the spatial mode of a single photon as the high-dimensional system, use two auxiliary entangled photons to realize a deterministic three-dimensional Bell state measurement. The fidelity of teleportation process matrix is F=0.596±0.037. Through this process matrix, we can prove that our teleportation is both nonclassical and genuine three dimensional. Our work paves the way to rebuild complex quantum systems remotely and to construct complex quantum networks.

Abstract:If a photon interacts with a member of an entangled photon pair via a so-called Bell-state measurement (BSM), its state is teleported over principally arbitrary distances onto the second member of the pair. Starting in 1997, this puzzling prediction of quantum mechanics has been demonstrated many times; however, with one very recent exception, only the photon that received the teleported state, if any, travelled far while the photons partaking in the BSM were always measured closely to where they were created. Here, using the Calgary fibre network, we report quantum teleportation from a telecommunication-wavelength photon, interacting with another telecommunication photon after both have travelled over several kilometres in bee-line, onto a photon at 795~nm wavelength. This improves the distance over which teleportation takes place from 818~m to 6.2~km. Our demonstration establishes an important requirement for quantum repeater-based communications and constitutes a milestone on the path to a global quantum Internet.

Abstract:We introduce new teleportation protocols which are generalizations of the original teleportation protocols that use the Pauli group [Bennett, et al. Physical Review Letters, 70(13) 1895-1899] and the port-based teleportation protocols, introduced by Hiroshima and Ishizaka [Physical Review Letters, 101(24) 240501], that use the symmetric permutation group. We derive sufficient condition for a set of operations, which in general need not form a group, to give rise to a teleportation protocol and provide examples of such schemes. This generalization leads to protocols with novel properties and is needed to push forward new schemes of computation based on them. Port-based teleportation protocols and our generalizations use a large resource state consisting of N singlets to teleport only a single qubit state reliably. We provide two distinct protocols which recycle the resource state to teleport multiple states with error linearly increasing with their number. The first protocol consists of sequentially teleporting qubit states, and the second teleports them in a bulk.

Abstract:Faithful long-distance quantum teleportation necessitates prior entanglement distribution between two communicated locations. The particle carrying on the unknown quantum information is then combined with one particle of the entangled states for Bell-state measurements, which leads to a transfer of the original quantum information onto the other particle of the entangled states. However in most of the implemented teleportation experiments nowadays, the Bell-state measurements are performed even before successful distribution of entanglement. This leads to an instant collapse of the quantum state for the transmitted particle, which is actually a single-particle transmission thereafter. Thus the true distance for quantum teleportation is, in fact, only in a level of meters. In the present experiment we design a novel scheme which has overcome this limit by utilizing fiber as quantum memory. A complete quantum teleportation is achieved upon successful entanglement distribution over 967 meters in public free space. Active feed-forward control techniques are developed for real-time transfer of quantum information. The overall experimental fidelities for teleported states are better than 89.6%, which signify high-quality teleportation.
Debating the Reliability and Robustness of the Learned Hamiltonian in the Traversable Wormhole Experiment

Abstract:The paper discusses Daniel Jafferis et al.'s "Nature" publication on "Traversable wormhole dynamics on a quantum processor." The experiment utilized Google's Sycamore quantum processor to simulate a sparse SYK model with a learned Hamiltonian. A debate ensued when Bryce Kobrin, Thomas Schuster, and Norman Yao raised concerns about the learned Hamiltonian's reliability, which Jafferis and the team addressed. Recently, there has been an update in the wormhole experiment saga. In an attempt to rescue the commuting Hamiltonian from its inevitable fate of being invalidated, a recent paper by Ping Gao proposed a creative solution to reinvigorate the concept within the context of teleportation through wormholes. This paper delves into the ongoing debate and the recent endeavor to address the comments made by Kobrin et al. I remain skeptical about the efforts to address Kobrin et al.'s challenges. By its nature, a commuting Hamiltonian does not exhibit chaotic behavior like non-commuting Hamiltonians. Moreover, it's always essential to assess the sensitivity of the Hamiltonian to noise to understand its practical feasibility for the real-world Sycamore processor.

On the Wormhole--Warp Drive Correspondence

Abstract:We propose a correspondence between the Morris--Thorne wormhole metric and a warp drive metric, which generalizes an earlier result by H. Ellis regarding the Schwarzschild black hole metric and makes it possible to embed a warp drive in a wormhole background. We demonstrate that in order to do that, one needs to also generalize the Natario--Alcubierre definition of warp drive and introduce nonzero intrinsic curvature. However, we also find out that in order to be traversable by a warp drive, the wormhole should have a horizon: in other words, humanly traversable wormholes cannot be traversed by a warp drive, and vice versa. We also discuss possible loopholes in this "no-go" theorem

Abstract:This paper extends an earlier study by the author [Phys. Rev. D, vol. 98, 064041 (2018), <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1809.01993" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1809.01993">arXiv:1809.01993</a>] in several significant ways. To begin with, the extra spatial dimension is assumed to be time dependent, while the redshift and shape functions, as well as the extra dimension, are functions of both $r$ and $l$, the respective radial and extra coordinates. The main goal is to determine the conditions that allow the throat of the wormhole to be threaded with ordinary matter (by respecting the null energy condition) and that the same conditions lead to a violation of the null energy condition in the fifth dimension, which can therefore be credited with helping to sustain the wormhole. The dependence of the metric coefficients on $l$ and time $t$ may either help or hinder the ability to use ordinary matter, while an unrestricted dependence on the fifth dimension could lead to a curvature singularity at the throat. Finally, the extra dimension may be extremely small or even curled up.

Abstract:A quantum communication architecture is being developed for long-distance, high-fidelity qubit teleportation. It uses an ultrabright narrowband source of polarization-entangled photons, plus trapped-atom quantum memories, and it is compatible with long-distance transmission over standard telecommunication fiber. This paper reports error models for the preceding teleportation architecture, and for an extension thereto which enables long-distance transmission and storage of Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states. The use of quantum error correction or entanglement purification to improve the performance of these quantum communication architectures is also discussed.

Abstract:Warp-drives are solutions of general relativity widely considered unphysical due to high negative energy requirements. While the majority of the literature has focused on macroscopic solutions towards the goal of interstellar travel, in this work we explore what happens in the small radius limit. In this regime the magnitude of the total negative energy requirements gets smaller than the energy contained in a lightning bolt, more than 70 orders of magnitude less than the original Alcubierre warp drive. Such an amount could conceivably be generated with current technology by scaling up Casimir-like apparatuses. We then describe a tubular distribution of externally-generated negative energy which addresses the major issues plaguing macroscopic warp-drives and propose a concrete mechanism to accelerate and decelerate a warp. A byproduct of warp deceleration is the emission of a ray of high-energy particles. The detection of such particles could be used as the backbone of a faster-than-light communication device, reminiscent of the hyperwave of science fiction, even though significant engineering challenges remain to achieve practical communication.

Abstract:Quantum teleportation is a core protocol in quantum information science. Besides revealing the fascinating feature of quantum entanglement, quantum teleportation provides an ultimate way to distribute quantum state over extremely long distance, which is crucial for global quantum communication and future quantum networks. In this review, we focus on the long distance quantum teleportation experiments, especially those employing photonic qubits. From the viewpoint of real-world application, both the technical advantages and disadvantages of these experiments are discussed.
Towards Quantum Gravity in the Lab on Quantum Processors

Abstract:The holographic principle and its realization in the AdS/CFT correspondence led to unexpected connections between general relativity and quantum information. This set the stage for studying aspects of quantum gravity models, which are otherwise difficult to access, in table-top quantum-computational experiments. Recent works have designed a special teleportation protocol that realizes a surprising communication phenomenon most naturally explained by the physics of a traversable wormhole. In this work, we have carried out quantum experiments based on this protocol on state-of-the-art quantum computers. The target quantum processing units (QPUs) included the Quantinuum's trapped-ion System Model H1-1 and five IBM superconducting QPUs of various architectures, with public and premium user access. We report the observed teleportation signals from these QPUs with the best one reaching 80% of theoretical predictions. We outline the experimental challenges we have faced in the course of implementation, as well as the new theoretical insights into quantum dynamics the work has led to. We also developed QGLab -- an open-source end-to-end software solution that facilitates conducting the wormhole-inspired teleportation experiments on state-of-the-art and emergent generations of QPUs supported by the Qiskit and tket SDKs. We consider our study and deliverables as an early practical step towards the realization of more complex experiments for the indirect probing of quantum gravity in the lab.

A Traversable Wormhole from the Kerr Black Hole

Abstract:The approach of Gao, Jafferis, and Wall to perturbatively construct traversable wormholes has seen success in a number of black hole backgrounds, particularly BTZ and $AdS_2$, whereas historically most wormhole solutions have been either found to violate the achronal ANEC, violate a classical no-go theorem, or exist only in astrophysically irrelevant spacetimes. In this work, we show that a double-trace deformation to the near-horizon, near-extremal region of Kerr yields a traversable wormhole. We also comment on the potential for a fully nonperturbative approach to a four-dimensional rotating traversable wormhole in asymptotically flat space.
