Abstract:We consider the linear heat equation on a bounded domain. We study estimates of the derivatives, up to the second order, of the solution locally in time in the Lebesgue spaces. We give a self-contained proof of the estimates in the end-point cases $p = 1, \infty$.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper mainly studies the problem of derivative estimation of solutions to the linear heat equation on bounded regions. Specifically, the authors focus on the estimates in the Lebesgue space within the local time of the solutions, especially the \(L^p\) estimates of the second - order derivatives. They provide self - contained proofs for the endpoint cases \(p = 1,\infty\).
### Research Background
The heat equation is a classical partial differential equation that describes the diffusion process of heat in a medium. On a bounded region \(\Omega\), consider the heat equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions:
\[
\begin{cases}
\partial_t u-\Delta u = 0 & \text{in }(0, T)\times\Omega,\\
u = 0 & \text{in }(0, T)\times\partial\Omega,\\
u(0,\cdot)=u_0(\cdot) & \text{in }\Omega.
\end{cases}
\]
### Main Objectives
The authors' aim is to obtain the estimates of the second - order derivatives of the solution \(u(t)\) in the \(L^p\) space, especially the estimates in the endpoint cases \(p = 1\) and \(p=\infty\). Specifically, they hope to prove the following results:
For \(d\geq2\), assume that \(\Omega\) is a bounded region in \(\mathbb{R}^d\) with a \(C^3\) boundary and the initial condition \(u_0\in C_c^\infty(\Omega)\), then the solution \(u(t):=S(t)u_0\) satisfies:
\[
\begin{aligned}
&\|u(t)\|_{L^p}\leq C\|u_0\|_{L^p},\\
&\|\nabla u(t)\|_{L^p}\leq C t^{- 1/2}\|u_0\|_{L^p},\\
&\|\nabla^2 u(t)\|_{L^p}\leq C t^{-1}\|u_0\|_{L^p},
\end{aligned}
\]
for all \(t > 0\), where \(C\) is a constant.
### Main Contributions
1. **Endpoint Estimates**: The authors provide detailed proofs for \(p = 1\) and \(p=\infty\), which are parts that are less involved in the existing literature.
2. **Self - contained Proofs**: The paper provides a self - contained proof, making it easier for readers to understand the derivation process of these endpoint estimates.
3. **Technical Details**: The authors use technical means such as semigroup theory, elliptic estimates and the contradiction method to prove these estimates.
### Application Prospects
These estimates are of great significance in the study of partial differential equations, especially in the applications of nonlinear heat equations, fluid mechanics and other related fields. Through these estimates, the behavior and properties of the solutions can be better understood, especially the behavior on bounded regions.
In conclusion, through strict mathematical analysis, this paper provides an important theoretical basis for the derivative estimation of the heat equation on bounded regions.
