Abstract:In this paper, we study the well extension of strict(irreflective) partial well orderings. We first prove that any partially well-ordered structure <A, R> can be extended to a well-ordered one. Then we prove that every linear extension of <A, R> is well-ordered if and only if A has no infinite totally unordered subset under R.

Abstract:In this note the proof-theoretic ordinal of the well-ordering principle for the normal functions $\mathsf {g}$ on ordinals is shown to be equal to the least fixed point of $\mathsf {g}$. Moreover corrections to the previous paper (Arai in Arch Math Log 57:649–664, <a href="#CR3">2017</a>) are made.

Abstract:The notion of well order admits an alternative definition in terms of embeddings between initial segments. We use the framework of reverse mathematics to investigate the logical strength of this definition and its connection with Fraïssé's conjecture, which has been proved by Laver. We also fill a small gap in Shore's proof that Fraïssé's conjecture implies arithmetic transfinite recursion over ${\bf RCA}_0$, by giving a new proof of $\Sigma^0_2$-induction.

Abstract:We study transfinite extensions of Japaridze's provability logic GLP and the well-founded relations that naturally occur within them. Every ordinal induces a partial order over the class of "words," which are iterated consistency statements expressible within GLP. Well-ordered restrictions of these partial orders have been studied previously; in this paper we consider the unrestricted partial orders, which are no longer linear but remain well-founded. These unrestricted partial orders bear important repercussions on modal semantics for GLP and on Turing progressions.

Abstract:We prove that a plactic monoid of any finite rank has decidable first order theory. This resolves other open decidability problems about the finite rank plactic monoids, such as the Diophantine problem and identity checking. This is achieved by interpreting a plactic monoid of arbitrary rank in Presburger arithmetic, which is known to have decidable first order theory. We also prove that the interpretation of the plactic monoids into Presburger Arithmetic is in fact a bi-interpretation, hence any two plactic monoids of finite rank are bi-interpretable with one another. The algorithm generating the interpretations is uniform, which answers positively the decidability of the Diophantine problem for the infinite rank plactic monoid.

Abstract:We deal with the monadic (second-order) theory of order. We prove all known results in a unified way, show a general way of reduction, prove more results and show the limitation on extending them. We prove (CH) that the monadic theory of the real order is undecidable. Our methods are model-theoretic, and we do not use automaton theory. This is a slightly corrected version of a very old work.

Abstract:The monadic theory of $(\mathbb R,\le)$ with quantification restricted to Borel sets, or even to $\sigma$-combinations of analytic sets, is decidable. The Boolean combinations of $F_\sigma$-sets form an elementary substructure of the Borel sets. Under determinacy hypotheses, the proof extends to larger classes of sets.

Abstract:Over the last century, the principle of "induction on the continuum" has been studied by different authors in different formats. All of these different readings are equivalent to one of the three versions that we isolate in this paper. We also formalize those three forms (of "continuous induction") in first-order logic and prove that two of them are equivalent and sufficiently strong to completely axiomatize the first-order theory of the real closed (ordered) fields. We show that the third weaker form of continuous induction is equivalent with the Archimedean property. We study some equivalent axiomatizations for the theory of real closed fields and propose a first-order scheme of the fundamental theorem of algebra as an alternative axiomatization for this theory (over the theory of ordered fields).

Abstract:We introduce a first-order theory $\mathsf{Seq}$ which is mutually interpretable with Robinson's $\mathsf{Q}$. The universe of a standard model for $\mathsf{Seq}$ consists of sequences. We prove that $\mathsf{Seq}$ directly interprets the adjuctive set theory $\mathsf{AST}$, and we prove that $\mathsf{Seq}$ interprets the tree theory $\mathsf{T}$ and the set theory $\mathsf{AST + EXT}$.

Abstract:We present the first verified implementation of a decision procedure for the quantifier-free theory of partial and linear orders. We formalise the procedure in Isabelle/HOL and provide a specification that is made executable using Isabelle's code generator. The procedure is already part of the development version of Isabelle as a sub-procedure of the simplifier.

Taking Bi-Intuitionistic Logic First-Order: A Proof-Theoretic Investigation via Polytree Sequents

Abstract:It is well-known that extending the Hilbert axiomatic system for first-order intuitionistic logic with an exclusion operator, that is dual to implication, collapses the domains in the model into a constant domain. This makes it a very challenging problem to find a sound and complete proof system for first-order bi-intuitionistic logic with non-constant domains, that is also conservative over first-order intuitionistic logic. We solve this problem by presenting the first sound and complete proof system for first-order bi-intuitionistic logic with increasing domains. We formalize our proof system in a labeled polytree sequent calculus (a notational variant of nested sequents), and prove that it enjoys cut-elimination and is conservative over first-order intuitionistic logic. A key feature of our calculus is an explicit eigenvariable context, which allows us to control precisely the scope of free variables in a polytree structure. Semantically this context can be seen as encoding a notion of Scott's existence predicate for intuitionistic logic. This turns out to be crucial to avoid the collapse of domains and to prove the completeness of our proof system. The explicit consideration of the variable context in a formula sheds light on a previously overlooked dependency between the residuation principle and the existence predicate in the first-order setting, that may help explain the difficulty in obtaining a complete proof system for first-order bi-intuitionistic logic.

Abstract:In this paper we show how to build a model of $ZFC$ such that all its inner models satisfying the Axiom of Choice are well-ordered with respect to inclusion, and that said ordering is of arbitrary height (including possibly $Ord$ high). We do this by iterating $\kappa$-Sacks forcing for ever-increasing $\kappa$, while showing that such forcings do not add any unexpected intermediate inner models.

Abstract:We introduce an extension of first-order logic that comes equipped with additional predicates for reasoning about an abstract state. Sequents in the logic comprise a main formula together with pre- and postconditions in the style of Hoare logic, and the axioms and rules of the logic ensure that the assertions about the state compose in the correct way. The main result of the paper is a realizability interpretation of our logic that extracts programs into a mixed functional/imperative language. All programs expressible in this language act on the state in a sequential manner, and we make this intuition precise by interpreting them in a semantic metatheory using the state monad. Our basic framework is very general, and our intention is that it can be instantiated and extended in a variety of different ways. We outline in detail one such extension: A monadic version of Heyting arithmetic with a wellfounded while rule, and conclude by outlining several other directions for future work.

Abstract:In this paper we give an ordinal analysis of the theory of second order arithmetic. We do this by working with proof trees -- that is, "deductions" which may not be well-founded. Working in a suitable theory, we are able to represent functions on proof trees as yet further proof trees satisfying a suitable analog of well-foundedness. Iterating this process allows us to represent higher order functions as well: since functions on proof trees are just proof trees themselves, these functions can easily be extended to act on proof trees which are themselves understood as functions. The corresponding system of ordinals parallels this, using higher order collapsing function.

Abstract:Let $L$ be the language of rings. We provide an axiomatization of the $L$-theories of quaternions and octonions and we characterize the models of mentioned theories: they coincide, up to isomorphism, to quaternion and octonion algebras over a real closed field, respectively. We prove these theories are complete, model complete and they do not have quantifier elimination. Then, we focus on the class of ordered polynomials. Over $\mathbb{H}$ and $\mathbb{O}$ these polynomials are of special interest in hypercomplex analysis since they are slice regular. We deduce some fundamental properties of the zero loci of ordered polynomials from completeness and we prove the failure of quantifier elimination for the fragment of ordered formulas.

Abstract:The class of Abelian p-groups are an example of some very interesting phenomena in computable structure theory. We will give an elementary first-order theory Tp whose models are each bi-interpretable with the disjoint union of an Abelian p-group and a pure set (and so that every Abelian p-group is bi-interpretable with a model of Tp) using computable infinitary formulas. This answers a question of Knight by giving an example of an elementary first-order theory of “Ulm type”: Any two models, low for ω1CK, and with the same computable infinitary theory, are isomorphic. It also gives a new example of an elementary first-order theory whose isomorphism problem is Σ11-complete but not Borel complete.

Abstract:Our main result (Theorem A) shows the incompleteness of any consistent sequential theory T T formulated in a finite language such that T T is axiomatized by a collection of sentences of bounded quantifier-alternation-depth. Our proof employs an appropriate reduction mechanism to rule out the possibility of completeness by simply invoking Tarski's Undefinability of Truth theorem. We also use the proof strategy of Theorem A to obtain other incompleteness results.
