Abstract:Motivated by recent progress on the scaling behavior of entanglement entropy, we study the scaling behavior of the number of clusters crossing the boundary between two subsystems for several classical statistical models in two dimension. This number exhibits a subleading logarithmic dependence of the linear dimension of the boundary when the model is at critical, in analogy to the entanglement entropy of a quantum system. It is shown that the logarithmic scaling of the cluster number originates from the conformal invariance of the critical system. We check this numerically for Ising and Ashkin-Teller models by using Monte Carlo simulations, and show that whether a universal coefficient of the logarithmic term can be observed numerically may strongly depend on the geometry and boundary condictions of the system.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the scaling behavior of the number of clusters across the boundaries between two subsystems in two - dimensional classical statistical models, especially in the Ising model and the Ashkin - Teller model. Specifically, the authors studied the relationship between the number of clusters across the boundary and the linear size \(L\) of the subsystem at the critical points of these models, and explored the sub - derivative logarithmic dependence in this relationship. This logarithmic dependence is similar to the behavior of the entanglement entropy in quantum systems, indicating that it originates from the conformal invariance of the critical system. The main contribution of the paper is that through theoretical analysis and Monte Carlo simulations, it is verified that in the critical Ising model and Ashkin - Teller model, the number of clusters across the boundary \(N(L)\) indeed exhibits the following scaling behavior: \[N(L)=aL + b\ln L\] where the coefficient \(b\) is directly related to the anomalous dimension of the corresponding boundary - condition - changing operator, rather than being related to the central charge \(c\) of the underlying conformal field theory as is usually thought. In addition, the paper also points out that, apart from corner corrections, the boundary condition is also an important factor affecting this logarithmic term. Through these studies, the authors hope that their findings can help solve some puzzles regarding the scaling behavior of the entanglement entropy in quantum critical systems.
