Abstract:y synthetic aperture radar (SAR) three-dimensional (3D) imaging can obtain 3D information of the target region, which is widely used in environmental monitoring and scattering information measurement. In recent years, with the development of compressed sensing (CS) theory, sparse signal processing is used in array SAR 3D imaging. Compared with matched filter (MF), sparse SAR imaging can effectively improve image quality. However, sparse imaging based on handcrafted regularization functions suffers from target information loss in few observed SAR data. Therefore, in this article, a general 3D sparse imaging framework based on Regulation by Denoising (RED) and proximal gradient descent type method for array SAR is presented. Firstly, we construct explicit prior terms via state-of-the-art denoising operators instead of regularization functions, which can improve the accuracy of sparse reconstruction and preserve the structure information of the target. Then, different proximal gradient descent type methods are presented, including a generalized alternating projection (GAP) and an alternating direction method of multiplier (ADMM), which is suitable for high-dimensional data processing. Additionally, the proposed method has robust convergence, which can achieve sparse reconstruction of 3D SAR in few observed SAR data. Extensive simulations and real data experiments are conducted to analyze the performance of the proposed method. The experimental results show that the proposed method has superior sparse reconstruction performance.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems Addressed by the Paper The paper aims to address the issue of target information loss in 3D imaging of Array Synthetic Aperture Radar (Array SAR) when the observational data is sparse. Specifically, the paper proposes a 3D sparse imaging framework based on Regularization by Denoising (RED) and proximal gradient descent methods (such as Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) and Generalized Alternating Projection (GAP)). #### Main Issues 1. **Limitations of Existing Methods**: - Sparse imaging methods based on manually designed regularization functions can lead to target information loss when observational data is sparse. - Existing interpolation and denoising methods (such as Plug-and-Play, PnP) can improve image quality, but still result in blurred target structures and artifacts when observational data is insufficient, affecting subsequent interpretation. 2. **Retention of Target Information**: - How to effectively retain target structure information and improve image quality when observational data is sparse. #### Solutions 1. **Explicit Prior Construction Based on RED**: - Utilize advanced denoising operators (such as deep learning denoisers) to construct explicit prior terms, thereby better preserving target features. - Compared to traditional regularization functions (such as L1 norm), this method can better reduce bias effects and improve reconstruction accuracy. 2. **Application of Proximal Gradient Descent Methods**: - Combine proximal gradient descent methods such as ADMM and GAP to solve the sparse imaging inverse problem. - These methods have better convergence and are suitable for high-dimensional data processing. Through the above methods, the new framework proposed in the paper can achieve high-quality 3D SAR imaging with sparse observational data, and it has good convergence and flexibility.
