Abstract:We investigate the dynamical interplay between magnetic and ferroelectric orders in a multiferroics with distorted spiral order. We find that the combing effect of the distortion of the spiral order and the effective spin anisotropy induced by the spin-lattice coupling results in the lifting of the degenerate gapped mode at the ordering wave vector, which is qualitatively in agreement with the experimental observations. In analogy to the perfect spiral spin structure, the electromagnon can be assigned to spin wave mode of the distorted helimagnet at the ordering wave vector. The electromagnon in the distorted helimagnets is also affected by the helix distortion which can be experimentally controlled.

Abstract:We consider magnetostriction in magnetic materials. Starting from a microscopic lattice model of the magneto-elastic coupling, we derive the continuum magnetostriction Hamiltonian in cubic ferromagnets and antiferromagnets. In ferromagnets, our results agree with established results. In antiferromagnets, we find a new central contribution which reflects the spin ordering. The additional term is essential in certain antiferromagnets where magnetic moments order in antiparallel ferromagnetic planes characterized by a normal axis. In such antiferromagnets, we predict that the magnetostrictive strain depends on the direction of the normal axis. Our findings are relevant for materials such as NiO and CoO, where there is a new spin-structure dependent strain, but not in RbMnF$_3$. We propose an experimental procedure to verify the importance of our findings in NiO that can be readily generalized to other materials. We also generalize the theory to include long-wavelength magnetoelastic coupling. We expect that the spin-structure dependent term critically affects the magnon-phonon coupling.

Abstract:The cause of magnetostriction is revealed by analyzing this phenomenon in a polydomain crystal of Fe. It is based on the two fundamentals: (a) magnetization is a rearrangement of spins by rearrangement of the crystal structure, and (b) the {\alpha}-Fe has a tetragonal rather than cubic structure. The magnetostriction results from bringing the shorter tetragonal axis to coincide with, or closer to the direction of the applied magnetic field. It is not rooted in the alleged deformation of crystal unit cell.

Abstract:The temperature dependent order parameter provides important information on the nature of magnetism. Using traditional methods to study this parameter in two-dimensional (2D) magnets remains difficult, however, particularly for insulating antiferromagnetic (AF) compounds. Here, we show that its temperature dependence in AF MPS$_{3}$ (M(II) = Fe, Co, Ni) can be probed via the anisotropy in the resonance frequency of rectangular membranes, mediated by a combination of anisotropic magnetostriction and spontaneous staggered magnetization. Density functional calculations followed by a derived orbital-resolved magnetic exchange analysis confirm and unravel the microscopic origin of this magnetization inducing anistropic strain. We further show that the temperature and thickness dependent order parameter allows to deduce the material's critical exponents characterising magnetic order. Nanomechanical sensing of magnetic order thus provides a future platform to investigate 2D magnetism down to the single-layer limit.

Relaxation Mechanism for Ordered Magnetic Materials

Abstract:We have formulated a relaxation mechanism for ferrites and ferromagnetic metals whereby the coupling between the magnetic motion and lattice is based purely on continuum arguments concerning magnetostriction. This theoretical approach contrasts with previous mechanisms based on microscopic formulations of spin-phonon interactions employing a discrete lattice. Our model explains for the first time the scaling of the intrinsic FMR linewidth with frequency, and 1/M temperature dependence and the anisotropic nature of magnetic relaxation in ordered magnetic materials, where M is the magnetization. Without introducing adjustable parameters our model is in reasonable quantitative agreement with experimental measurements of the intrinsic magnetic resonance linewidths of important class of ordered magnetic materials, insulator or metals.

Abstract:Amorphous magnetic solids, like metallic glasses, exhibit a novel effect: the growth of magnetic order as a function of mechanical strain under athermal conditions in the presence of a magnetic field. The magnetic moment increases in steps whenever there is a plastic event. Thus plasticity induces the magnetic ordering, acting as the effective noise driving the system towards equilibrium. We present results of atomistic simulations of this effect in a model of a magnetic amorphous solid subjected to pure shear and a magnetic field. To elucidate the dependence on external strain and magnetic field we offer a mean-field theory that provides an adequate qualitative understanding of the observed phenomenon.

Effect of Acoustic Oscillations on Non-Equilibrium State of Magnetic Domain Structure in Cubic Ni2MnGa Single Crystal

Abstract:Magnetic hysteresis is a manifestation of non-equilibrium state of magnetic domain walls trapped in local energy minima. Using two types of experiments we show that, after application of a magnetic field to a ferromagnet, acoustic oscillations excited in the latter can "equilibrate" metastable magnetic domain structure by triggering the motion of domain walls into more stable configurations. Single crystals of archetypal Ni2MnGa magnetic shape memory alloy in the cubic phase were used in the experiments. The magnetomechanical absorption of ultrasound versus strain amplitude was studied after step-like changes of a polarizing magnetic field. One-time hysteresis was observed in strain amplitude dependences of magnetomechanical internal friction after step-like variations of a polarizing field. We distinguish two ingredients of the strain amplitude hysteresis that are found in the ranges of linear and non-linear internal friction and show qualitatively different behavior for increasing and decreasing applied polarizing fields. The uncovered effect is interpreted in terms of three canonical magnetomechanical internal friction terms (microeddy, macroeddy and hysteretic) and attributed to "triggering" by acoustic oscillations of the irreversible motion of domain walls trapped in the metastable states. To confirm the suggested interpretation we determine the coercive field of magnetization hysteresis through the measurements of the reversible Villari effect. We show that the width of the hysteresis loops decreases when acoustic oscillations in the non-linear range of domain wall motion are excited in the crystal. The observed "equilibration" of the magnetic domain structure by acoustic oscillations is attributed to the periodic stress anisotropy field induced by oscillatory mechanical stress.

Abstract:The magnetic correlations in the austenite phase and the consequent martensitic transition in inverse magnetocaloric alloys, Ni$_{2}$Mn$_{1+x}$Sn$_{1-x}$, have been a matter of debate for decades. We conclusively establish using {\it ab initio} phonon calculations that the spin alignment of excess Mn at the Sn site (Mn$_{Sn}$) with the existing Mn in the unit cell in the high temperature cubic phase of Ni-Mn-Sn alloy is ferromagnetic (FM), and not ferrimagnetic (FI), resolving a long lasting controversy. Using first principles density functional perturbation theory (DFPT), we observe an instability of the TA$_{2}$ mode along the $\Gamma$-M direction in the FM phase, very similar to that observed in the prototypical ferromagnetic shape memory alloy (FSMA) Ni$_{2}$MnGa. This specific instability is not observed in the FI phase. Further finite temperature first principles lattice dynamics calculations reveal that at 300 K the FM phase becomes mechanically stable, while the FI phase continue to remain unstable providing credence to the fact that the high-temperature phase has FM order. These results will be primordial to understand the magneto-structural properties of this class of compounds.

Abstract:Ferromagnetic Ni2MnGa-based alloys play an important role in technological fields, such as smart actuators, magnetic refrigeration and robotics. The possibility of obtaining large non-contact deformation induced by an external perturbation is one of its key strengths for applications. However, the search for materials with low cost, practical fabrication procedures and large signal output under small perturbing fields still poses challenges. In the present study we demonstrate that by judicial choice of substitution on the Mn site, an abrupt magnetostructural transition from a paramagnetic austenite phase to a ferromagnetic martensite one can be tuned to close to room temperature achieving large and reproducible strains. The required magnetic field to induce the strain varies from small values, as low as 0.25 T for 297.4 K and 1.6% of strain, to 8 T for 305 K and 2.6% of strain. Our findings point to encouraging possibilities for application of shape memory alloys in relatively inexpensive, scalable polycrystalline materials.

Abstract:A mechanism for the depinning of dislocations pinned by a stopper is formulated. This mechanism includes the transfer of an electron from a dislocation to the stopper and the appearance of a spin two-electron nanoreactor that has no Coulomb interaction that would hold the dislocation at the stopper in the initial state. The spin dynamics in the nanoreactor is controlled by a magnetic field; therefore, it causes magnetoplasticity and short-term magnetic memory. Another origin of magnetoplasticity is the aggregation of diffusing paramagnetic ions (stoppers) into dimers, trimers, and clusters; this aggregation is also spin-selective and magnetically sensitive. The magnetic-field dependence of the structural evolution of the stoppers provides long-term magnetic memory in diamagnetic solids. Both mechanisms of magnetoplasticity and magnetic memory can coexist and be independent of or dependent on each other.

Abstract:In situ straining tests in high purity α-Fe thin foils at low temperatures1 have demonstrated that crystal line defects, called dislocations, have a jerky type of motion made of intermittent long jumps of several nanometres. This observation conflicts with the standard Peierls mechanism for plastic deformation in body-centred cubic crystals, where the screw dislocation jumps are limited by inter-reticular distances, that is, distances of a few angstroms. Employing atomic-scale simulations, we show that although the short jumps are initially more favourable, their realization requires the propagation of a kinked profile along the dislocation line, which yields coherent atomic vibrations acting as travelling thermal spikes. Such local heat bursts favour the thermally assisted nucleation of new kinks in the wake of primary ones. The accumulation of new kinks leads to long dislocation jumps like those observed experimentally. Our study constitutes an important step towards predictive atomic-scale theory for materials deformation.

Abstract:In the article, based on the theory of micromagnetism, a special case of the moment theory of elasticity for an anisotropic material and the Hadamard compatibility condition for deformations, a microstructural model of the behavior of the Heusler alloy with shape memory in magnetic and force fields is constructed. The dynamics of the magnetic process is described by the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation. Using the Galerkin procedure, variational equations corresponding to the differential relations of the magnetic problem are written out and the finite element method is used for numerical realization of these equations. Considering the problems of the moment theory of elasticity we come to a special case of this theory in which, under the action of force and magnetic fields, the tensor of moment stresses initiated only by the magnetic field is zero. Using this result, the general expression for the state equation is constructed that describes, within the framework of small deformations, the behavior of an anisotropic material under force and magnetic influences. The stress tensor in this equation consists of a symmetric part and a skew-symmetric part, depending only on the magnetic field. For the problem of deformable solid mechanics with such a state equation, the Lagrange variational equation was constructed, which made it possible to reduce the requirements for the smoothness of the desired solution by an order of magnitude. The general expression for the state equation has been concretized for an anisotropic material having one axis of symmetry of the fourth order and two axes of symmetry of the second order. The solution of the Hadamard compatibility equation for deformations made it possible to determine the sliding surfaces and sliding directions in a tetragonal crystal cell of a ferromagnetic material in the martensitic state, along which a shift occurs, leading to the appearance and dissipation of a twinned structure. The microstructural model, constructed using all these positions, is used to describe experimental results on the combined action of magnetic and force fields on the Heusler alloy.

Abstract:The magnetoplastic effect in mechanics of nonmagnetic crystals is attributed to spin evolution in the spin-selective nanoscale reactor created by electron transfer from a dislocation to a stopper. In this “dislocation + stopper” system, dislocation depinning is facilitated because the Coulomb attraction between the dislocation and the stopper is switched off. Since magnetic field stimulates the singlet-to-triplet conversion of the nanoscale reactor (the reverse electron transfer is forbidden), the nanoscale reactor with switched-off Coulomb interaction has a longer lifetime. The resulting increase in depinning rate and dislocation mobility provides a physical explanation for magnetoplasticity.

Abstract:Electric-field control of magnetism requires deterministic control of the magnetic order and understanding of the magnetoelectric coupling in multiferroics like BiFeO3 and EuTiO3. Despite this critical need, there are few studies on the strain evolution of magnetic order in BiFeO3 films. Here, in (110)-oriented BiFeO3 films, we reveal that while the polarization structure remains relatively unaffected, strain can continuously tune the orientation of the antiferromagnetic-spin axis across a wide angular space, resulting in an unexpected deviation of the classical perpendicular relationship between the antiferromagnetic axis and the polarization. Calculations suggest that this evolution arises from a competition between the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction and single-ion anisotropy wherein the former dominates at small strains and the two are comparable at large strains. Finally, strong coupling between the BiFeO3 and the ferromagnet Co0.9Fe0.1 exists such that the magnetic anisotropy of the ferromagnet can be effectively controlled by engineering the orientation of the antiferromagnetic-spin axis.

Abstract:The kinetic equations describing the rate of magnetically induced release of dislocations entrapped by stoppers were solved. The magnetic field effect on the mobility of dislocations was calculated. Its comparison with experiment gave the ratio between the rate constants for two key processes governing magnetoplasticity, namely, singlet-triplet conversion in a spin nanoreactor and the release of a dislocation from it. The kinetic criterion of the existence of magnetoplasticity as a physical phenomenon was obtained.

To deal with this problem on the ab-initio level one need to employ a specific methodology for calculation of the electronic structure that takes into the account the magnetic disorder effects. In addition one needs to setup a special statistical models allowing simultaneously for ab-initio mapping and for the variation of the local spin magnitude. To this end here we discuss and employ methodology that is based on the Disordered Local Moment (DLM) formalism, spin-constraint Local Spin Density Approximation (LSDA) and Lichtenstein theorem for calculation of the inter-site exchange interactions. An extended classical Heisenberg Hamiltonian used for mapping allows for the variation of the lattice site spin magnitude. We consider here three representative canonical transition metals ferromagnets hcp Gd, bcc Fe and fcc Ni with quite a different character of the magnetic moment localization and illustrate the relative importance of the longitudinal spin fluctuations and the magnetic disorder induced electronic structure reconstruction. We use recently introduced linear measure [1] for integration over the longitudinal spin component in the classical configurational spin space.

Abstract:Strain engineering is widely used to manipulate the electronic and magnetic properties of complex materials. For example, the piezomagnetic effect provides an attractive route to control magnetism with strain. In this effect, the staggered spin structure of an antiferromagnet is decompensated by breaking the crystal field symmetry, which induces a ferrimagnetic polarization. Piezomagnetism is especially appealing because, unlike magnetostriction, it couples strain and magnetization at linear order, and allows for bi-directional control suitable for memory and spintronics applications. However, its use in functional devices has so far been hindered by the slow speed and large uniaxial strains required. Here we show that the essential features of piezomagnetism can be reproduced with optical phonons alone, which can be driven by light to large amplitudes without changing the volume and hence beyond the elastic limits of the material. We exploit nonlinear, three-phonon mixing to induce the desired crystal field distortions in the antiferromagnet CoF2. Through this effect, we generate a ferrimagnetic moment of 0.2 μB per unit cell, nearly three orders of magnitude larger than achieved with mechanical strain.

Magnetic ordering and dynamics in monolayers and bilayers of chromium trihalides: atomistic simulations approach

Abstract:We analyze magnetic properties of monolayers and bilayers of chromium trihalides, CrI$_3$, in two different stacking configurations: AA and rhombohedral ones. Our main focus is on the corresponding Curie temperatures, hysteresis curves, equilibrium spin structures, and spin wave excitations. To obtain all these magnetic characteristic, we employ the atomistic spin dynamics and Monte Carlo simulation techniques. The model Hamiltonian includes isotropic exchange coupling, magnetic anisotropy, and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Though the latter is relatively weak in CrI$_3$, we consider a more general case assuming also an enhancement of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in the corresponding Janus structures and by external electric fields. An important issue of the analysis is the correlation between hysteresis curves and spin configurations in the system, as well as formation of the skyrmion textures.

Order-by-disorder without quantum zero-point fluctuations in the pyrochlore Heisenberg ferromagnet with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions

Abstract:Order-by-disorder, whereby fluctuations lift an accidental classical ground state degeneracy to stabilize a subset of ordered states, is a recurrent and prominent theme in the field of frustrated magnetism where magnetic moments, or spins, are subject to competing interactions. Thus far, such a phenomenon has been discussed in systems where the quantum ground state is not a product state. In this circumstance, both thermal and quantum fluctuations act to lift the accidental classical degeneracy, begging the question whether one mechanism of order-by-disorder is possible without the other. In this paper, we present results exposing a novel route to order-by-disorder, without quantum zero-point fluctuations, in a family of ferromagnetic Heisenberg materials with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction as the leading perturbation. We prove that any colinear ferromagnetic state is an exact eigenstate, even in the presence of the anisotropic DM interaction, while thermal fluctuations give rise to a preference in the magnetization direction. Here, we present in detail an example of the pyrochlore Heisenberg ferromagnet with DM interactions. Using both linear spin-wave theory and classical Monte Carlo simulations, we find that the magnetization can spontaneously rotate at intermediate temperature(s) within the colinear ferromagnetic phase when the DM interaction is large. Additionally, we find that in the large DM regime, the ferromagnetic ground state becomes unstable within the framework of non-linear spin-wave theory. Our results show that thermal order-by-disorder is possible even in the absence of quantum zero-point fluctuations.
