The goal is to determine the graphs that have the maximum sigma index within certain classes of graphs. Abdo, Dimitrov, and Gutman characterized the graphs with the greatest sigma index among all connected graphs of a fixed order.

Abstract:The Wiener index is the sum of topological distances between all pairs of vertices in a connected graph such as represents the structural formula of a molecule. Firstly, we investigate some properties of the partially ordered set of all vectors associated with a tree with respect to majorization. Then these results are used to characterize the trees which minimize the Wiener index among all trees with a given degree sequence. Consequently, all extremal trees with the smallest Wiener index are obtained in the sets of all trees of order n with the maximum degree, the leaf number and the matching number respectively.

Abstract:The Wiener index of a graph is defined as the sum of distances between all pairs of vertices. As one of the most well known chemical indices, the extremal structures that maximize or minimize the Wiener index have been extensively studied for many different classes of graphs, among which trees with a given degree sequence or segment sequence. In this note we consider trees in which both the degree sequence and segment sequence are predetermined, and examine the extremal problems. Characteristics of the extremal structures are presented, some directly from previously established methods. We also pose some questions from our study.

Abstract:This article investigates some properties of the number of subtrees of a tree with given degree sequence. These results are used to characterize trees with the given degree sequence that have the largest number of subtrees, which generalize the recent results of Kirk and Wang (SIAM J Discrete Math 22 (2008), 985995). These trees coincide with those which were proven by Wang and independently Zhang et al. (2008) to minimize the Wiener index. We also provide a partial ordering of the extremal trees with different degree sequences, some extremal results follow as corollaries. (C) 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:We study the Sombor index of trees with various degree restrictions. In addition to rediscovering that among all trees with a given degree sequence, the greedy tree minimises the Sombor index and the alternating greedy tree maximises it, we also provide a full characterisation of all trees that have those maximum or minimum values. Moreover, we compare trees with different degree sequences and deduce a few corollaries.

Abstract:We consider general atom-bond sum-connectivity indices for and study their values over all trees on a given number of vertices with a fixed maximum degree . We obtain both the minimum and the maximum values and characterize the corresponding trees. The obtained results recover previously known results for the atom-bond sum-connectivity index and imply analogous results for the well-known harmonic index. The results remain valid when the class of considered graphs is restricted to the class of molecular trees.

Abstract:This paper surveys some recent results and progress on the extremal prob- lems in a given set consisting of all simple connected graphs with the same graphic degree sequence. In particular, we study and characterize the extremal graphs having the maximum (or minimum) values of graph invariants such as (Laplacian, p-Laplacian, signless Laplacian) spectral radius, the first Dirichlet eigenvalue, the Wiener index, the Harary index, the number of subtrees and the chromatic number etc, in given sets with the same tree, unicyclic, graphic degree sequences. Abstract:Let gamma'(S)(G) and gamma(SS)(G) be the signed edge domination number and signed star domination number of a graph G, respectively. In this paper, we prove that for a tree T of order n >= 3, if gamma'(S)(T) = gamma(SS)(T) = k then k >= (3n + 1)/5. Moreover, we prove that for any integer r >= 1, there exists a tree T-r on n = 5r+3 vertices such that gamma'(S)(T-r) = gamma(SS)(T-r) = (3n + 1)/5.

Abstract:The well-known Wiener index is defined as the sum of pairwise distances between vertices. Extremal problems with respect to it have been extensively studied for trees. A generalization of the Wiener index, called the Steiner Wiener index, takes the sum of minimum sizes of subgraphs that span k given vertices over all possible choices of the k vertices. We consider the extremal problems with respect to the Steiner Wiener index among trees of a given degree sequence. First, it is pointed out minimizing the Steiner Wiener index in general may be a difficult problem, although the extremal structure may very likely be the same as that for the regular Wiener index. We then consider the upper bound of the general Steiner Wiener index among trees of a given degree sequence and study the corresponding extremal trees. With these findings, some further discussion and computational analysis are presented for chemical trees. We also propose a conjecture based on the computational results. In addition, we identify the extremal trees that maximize the Steiner Wiener index among trees with a given maximum degree or number of leaves.

Abstract:The Merrifield–Simmons index and the Hosoya index are two prominent molecular graph descriptors in mathematical chemistry. The Merrifield–Simmons index of a graph is defined as the total number of the independent sets of the graph and the Hosoya index of a graph is defined as the total number of the matchings of the graph. In this paper, the Merrifield–Simmons index and the Hosoya index of a class of trees $$ \Gamma $$ are investigated, and their orderings and extremal trees with respect to these two topological indices are obtained, respectively.

Abstract:When considering the number of subtrees of trees, the extremal structures which maximize this number among binary trees and trees with a given maximum degree lead to some interesting facts that correlate to other graphical indices in applications. The number of subtrees in the extremal cases constitute sequences which are of interest to number theorists. The structures which maximize or minimize the number of subtrees among general trees, binary trees and trees with a given maximum degree have been identified previously. Most recently, results of this nature are generalized to trees with a given degree sequence. In this note, we characterize the trees which maximize the number of subtrees among trees of a given order and degree sequence. Instead of using theoretical arguments, we take an algorithmic approach that explicitly describes the process of achieving an extremal tree from any random tree. The result also leads to some interesting questions and provides insight on finding the trees close to extremal and their numbers of subtrees.

Abstract:The Steiner distance of vertices in a set S is the minimum size of a connected subgraph that contain these vertices. The sum of the Steiner distances over all sets S of cardinality k is called the Steiner k-Wiener index and studied as the natural generalization of the famous Wiener index in chemical graph theory. In this paper we study the extremal structures, among trees with a given segment sequence, that maximize or minimize the Steiner k-Wiener index. The same extremal problems are also considered for trees with a given number of segments.

Abstract:The ABS (atom-bond sum-connectivity) index of a graph G is denoted by ABS(G) and is defined as ∑xy∈E(G)(dx+dy)−1(dx+dy−2), where dx represents the degree of the vertex x in G. In this paper, we derive the best possible upper bounds on the ABS index for fixed-order trees possessing a given maximum degree, which provides a solution to the open problem proposed quite recently by Hussain, Liu and Hua.

Abstract:Let G be a connected graph and let k be a positive integer. Let T be a spanning tree of G. The leaf degree of a vertex v ∈ V ( T ) is defined as the number of leaves adjacent to v in T. The leaf degree of T is the maximum leaf degree among all the vertices of T. Let D ( G ) and Q ( G ) denote the distance matrix and the distance signless Laplacian matrix of G, respectively. In this work, we provide the upper bounds for the spectral radius of D ( G ) (resp. Q ( G ) ) in a connected graph G of order n to guarantee that G contains a spanning tree with leaf degree at most k. Furthermore, we establish some extremal graphs to show all the upper bounds obtained in this work are sharp.

Abstract:The atom-bond connectivity (ABC) index of a graph G is defined to be ABC(G)=∑ _uv∈ E(G)√(d(u)+d(v)-2/d(u)d(v)) where d ( u ) is the degree of a vertex u . The ABC index plays a key role in correlating the physical–chemical properties and the molecular structures of some families of compounds. In this paper, we describe the structural properties of graphs which have the minimum ABC index among all connected graphs with a given degree sequence. Moreover, these results are used to characterize the extremal graphs which have the minimum ABC index among all unicyclic and bicyclic graphs with a given degree sequence.
