Abstract:The momentum exchange method has been widely used in lattice Boltzmann simulations for particle-fluid interactions. Although proved accurate for still walls, it will result in inaccurate particle dynamics without corrections. In this work, we reveal the physical cause of this problem and find that the initial momentum of the net mass transfer through boundaries in the moving-boundary treatment is not counted in the conventional momentum exchange method. A corrected momentum exchange method is then proposed by taking into account the initial momentum of the net mass transfer at each time step. The method is easy to implement with negligible extra computation cost. Direct numerical simulations of a single elliptical particle sedimentation are carried out to evaluate the accuracy for our method as well as other lattice Boltzmann-based methods by comparisons with the results of the finite element method. A shear flow test shows that our method is Galilean invariant.
Transport based particle methods for the Fokker-Planck-Landau equation

Abstract:We propose a particle method for numerically solving the Landau equation, inspired by the score-based transport modeling (SBTM) method for the Fokker-Planck equation. This method can preserve some important physical properties of the Landau equation, such as the conservation of mass, momentum, and energy, and decay of estimated entropy. We prove that matching the gradient of the logarithm of the approximate solution is enough to recover the true solution to the Landau equation with Maxwellian molecules. Several numerical experiments in low and moderately high dimensions are performed, with particular emphasis on comparing the proposed method with the traditional particle or blob method.

JKO for Landau: a variational particle method for homogeneous Landau equation

Abstract:Inspired by the gradient flow viewpoint of the Landau equation and corresponding dynamic formulation of the Landau metric in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2007.08591" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2007.08591">arXiv:2007.08591</a>], we develop a novel implicit particle method for the Landau equation in the framework of the JKO scheme. We first reformulate the Landau metric in a computationally friendly form, and then translate it into the Lagrangian viewpoint using the flow map. A key observation is that, while the flow map evolves according to a rather complicated integral equation, the unknown component is merely a score function of the corresponding density plus an additional term in the null space of the collision kernel. This insight guides us in approximating the flow map with a neural network and simplifies the training. Additionally, the objective function is in a double summation form, making it highly suitable for stochastic methods. Consequently, we design a tailored version of stochastic gradient descent that maintains particle interactions and reduces the computational complexity. Compared to other deterministic particle methods, the proposed method enjoys exact entropy dissipation and unconditional stability, therefore making it suitable for large-scale plasma simulations over extended time periods.

Abstract:We consider in this paper random batch particle methods for efficiently solving the homogeneous Landau equation in plasma physics. The methods are stochastic variations of the particle methods proposed by Carrillo et al. [J. Comput. Phys.: X 7: 100066, 2020] using the random batch strategy. The collisions only take place inside the small but randomly selected batches so that the computational cost is reduced to $O(N)$ per time step. Meanwhile, our methods can preserve the conservation of mass, momentum, energy and the decay of entropy. Several numerical examples are performed to validate our methods.

Abstract:The multispecies Landau collision operator describes the two-particle, small scattering angle or grazing collisions in a plasma made up of different species of particles such as electrons and ions. Recently, a structure preserving deterministic particle method (Carrillo et al. in J. Comput. Phys. 7:100066, 2020) has been developed for the single species spatially homogeneous Landau equation. This method relies on a regularization of the Landau collision operator so that an approximate solution, which is a linear combination of Dirac delta distributions, is well-defined. Based on a weak form of the regularized Landau equation, the time dependent locations of the Dirac delta functions satisfy a system of ordinary differential equations. In this work, we extend this particle method to the multispecies case, and examine its conservation of mass, momentum, and energy, and decay of entropy properties. We show that the equilibrium distribution of the regularized multispecies Landau equation is a Maxwellian distribution, and state a critical condition on the regularization parameters that guarantees a species independent equilibrium temperature. A convergence study comparing an exact multispecies Bobylev-Krook-Wu (BKW) solution to the particle solution shows approximately 2nd order accuracy. Important physical properties such as conservation, decay of entropy, and equilibrium distribution of the particle method are demonstrated with several numerical examples.

Abstract:We design a deterministic particle method for the solution of the spatially homogeneous Landau equation with uncertainty. The deterministic particle approximation is based on the reformulation of the Landau equation as a formal gradient flow on the set of probability measures, whereas the propagation of uncertain quantities is computed by means of a sg representation of each particle. This approach guarantees spectral accuracy in uncertainty space while preserving the fundamental structural properties of the model: the positivity of the solution, the conservation of invariant quantities, and the entropy production. We provide a regularity results for the particle method in the random space. We perform the numerical validation of the particle method in a wealth of test cases.

A fast solver for the spatially homogeneous electron Boltzmann equation

Abstract:We present a numerical method for the velocity-space, spatially homogeneous, collisional Boltzmann equation for electron transport in low-temperature plasma (LTP) conditions. Modeling LTP plasmas is useful in many applications, including advanced manufacturing, material processing, semiconductor processing, and hypersonics, to name a few. Most state-of-the-art methods for electron kinetics are based on Monte-Carlo sampling for collisions combined with Lagrangian particle-in-cell methods. We discuss an Eulerian solver that approximates the electron velocity distribution function using spherical harmonics (angular components) and B-splines (energy component). Our solver supports electron-heavy elastic and inelastic binary collisions, electron-electron Coulomb interactions, steady-state and transient dynamics, and an arbitrary nmber of angular terms in the electron distribution function. We report convergence results and compare our solver to two other codes: an in-house particle Monte-Carlo ethod; and Bolsig+, a state-of-the-art Eulerian solver for electron transport in LTPs. Furthermore, we use our solver to study the relaxation time scales of the higher-order anisotropic correction terms. Our code is open-source and provides an interface that allows coupling to multiphysics simulations of low-temperature plasmas.

A stable moving particle semi-implicit method

Abstract:The objective of this study is to propose a stable moving particle semi-implicit (MPS) method for the fluid dynamics analysis. The solvable condition for the MPS simulations was investigated in an enclosed calculation region and the reason for the numerical instability was analyzed when the MPS particles knock at the solid wall or liquid surface is with a relatively large velocity. A new solution algorithm and boundary treatment methods for the free surface were developed to solve the Navier-Stokes equations. The modified MPS method greatly improves the numerical calculation stability. It has been employed to stably simulate the broken-dam phenomena. The results verify that the modified MPS method is very effective for the fluid dynamics analysis.
Numerical solution of the quantum Lenard-Balescu equation for a one-component plasma

Abstract:We present a numerical solution of the quantum Lenard-Balescu equation using a spectral method, namely an expansion in Laguerre polynomials. This method exactly conserves both particles and energy and facilitates the integration over the dielectric function. To demonstrate the method, we solve the equilibration problem for a spatially homogeneous one-component plasma with various initial conditions. Unlike the more usual Landau/Fokker-Planck system, this method requires no input Coulomb logarithm; the logarithmic terms in the collision integral arise naturally from the equation along with the non-logarithmic order-unity terms. The spectral method can also be used to solve the Landau equation and a quantum version of the Landau equation in which the integration over the wavenumber requires only a lower cutoff. We solve these problems as well and compare them with the full Lenard-Balescu solution in the weak-coupling limit. Finally, we discuss the possible generalization of this method to include spatial inhomogeneity and velocity anisotropy.

Abstract:When using standard deterministic particle methods, point values of the computed solutions have to be recovered from their singular particle approximations by using some smoothing procedure. The choice of the smoothing procedure is rather flexible. Moreover, there is always a parameter associated with the smoothing procedure: if this parameter is too large, the numerical solution loses its accuracy; if it is too small, oscillation appears. No explicit formula has been given on how to choose this parameter. In this paper, we develop a particle method for the semiclassical limit of the Schrodinger equation and the Vlasov--Poisson equations, in which we use the property of conservation of charge, which was studied in [D. Wei, Kinetic and Related Models, 3 (2010), pp. 729--754], to construct the density. This method avoids the recovery step of the particle methods; thus it is simpler and more accurate. Abstract:Nowadays hydrodynamic equations coupled with external equation of states provided by quantum mechanical calculations is a widely used approach for simulations of macroscopic degenerate plasmas. Although such an approach is proven to be efficient and shows many good features, especially for large scale simulations, it encounters intrinsic challenges when involving kinetic effects. As a complement, here we have invented a fully kinetic numerical approach for macroscopic degenerate plasmas. This approach is based on first principle Boltzmann-Uhling-Uhlenbeck equations coupled with Maxwell's equation, and is eventually achieved via an existing particle-in-cell simulation code named LAPINS. In this approach, degenerate particles obey Fermi-Dirac statistics and nondegenerate particles follow the typical Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics. The equation of motion of both degenerate and nondegenerate particles are governed by long range collective electromagnetic fields and close particle-particle collisions. Especially, Boltzmann-Uhling-Uhlenbeck collisions ensure that evolution of degenerate particles is enforced by the Pauli exclusion principle. The code is applied to several benchmark simulations, including electronic conductivity for aluminium with varying temperatures from 2 eV to 50 eV, thermalization of alpha particles in a cold fuel shell in inertial confinement fusion, and rapid heating of solid sample by short and intense laser pulses.
Geometric Particle-In-Cell discretizations of a plasma hybrid model with kinetic ions and mass-less fluid electrons

Abstract:We explore the possibilities of applying structure-preserving numerical methods to a plasma hybrid model with kinetic ions and mass-less fluid electrons satisfying the quasi-neutrality relation. The numerical schemes are derived by finite element methods in the framework of finite element exterior calculus (FEEC) for field variables, particle-in-cell (PIC) methods for the Vlasov equation, and splitting methods in time based on an anti-symmetric bracket proposed. Conservation properties of energy, quasi-neutrality relation, positivity of density, and divergence-free property of the magnetic field are given irrespective of the used resolution and metric. Local quasi-interpolation is used for dealing with the current terms in order to make the proposed methods more efficient. The implementation has been done in the framework of the Python package STRUPHY [1], and has been verified by extensive numerical experiments.

Abstract:We present a Heterogeneous Multiscale Method for the Landau-Lifshitz equation with a highly oscillatory diffusion coefficient, a simple model for a ferromagnetic composite. A finite element macro scheme is combined with a finite difference micro model to approximate the effective equation corresponding to the original problem. This makes it possible to obtain effective solutions to problems with rapid material variations on a small scale, described by ε ≪ 1, which would be too expensive to resolve in a conventional simulation.
Structure-preserving particle methods for the Landau collision operator using the metriplectic framework

Abstract:We present a novel family of particle discretisation methods for the nonlinear Landau collision operator. We exploit the metriplectic structure underlying the Vlasov-Maxwell-Landau system in order to obtain disretisation schemes that automatically preserve mass, momentum, and energy, warrant monotonic dissipation of entropy, and are thus guaranteed to respect the laws of thermodynamics. In contrast to recent works that used radial basis functions and similar methods for regularisation, here we use an auxiliary spline or finite element representation of the distribution function to this end. Discrete gradient methods are employed to guarantee the aforementioned properties in the time discrete domain as well.

Abstract:A hybrid model for numerical solutions of the Vlasov–Poisson equations is presented, which blends spectral and particle approaches. The model splits the distribution function for plasma species into both spectral and particle representations in the velocity space to combine the advantages of each approach. The spectral representation leverages asymmetrically weighted Hermite basis, whereas the particle representation leverages the particle-in-cell method. Configuration phase space is decomposed with the Fourier method, which is well suited for periodic problems. We derive conservation equations for mass, momentum, and energy for the proposed combined method. It is shown that the coupling error between the two methods is absent in the semi-discrete setting (not taking into account time discretization). Finally, numerical test cases are presented simulating a weak electron beam interaction with plasma, leading to beam–plasma instability. The initially localized electron beam evolved into a highly non-equilibrium distribution function in the velocity space. A small growth rate and the resonance nature of instability make it difficult to obtain accurate solutions for purely particle methods due to noise, which falls as ∼1/Np with a number of particles. At the same time, purely spectral methods may require a large number of modes to capture the highly non-equilibrium state of the evolved beam. We show that the hybrid method is well suited for such problems: it reproduces the linear stage as well as nonlinear dynamics with sufficient accuracy using a highly non-equilibrium distribution function.

Abstract:Particle distribution functions evolving under the Lorentz operator can be simulated with the Langevin equation for pitch-angle scattering. This approach is frequently used in particle-based Monte-Carlo simulations of plasma collisions, among others. However, most numerical treatments do not guarantee energy conservation, which may lead to unphysical artifacts such as numerical heating and spectra distortions. We present a structure-preserving numerical algorithm for the Langevin equation for pitch-angle scattering. Similar to the well-known Boris algorithm, the proposed numerical scheme takes advantage of the structure-preserving properties of the Cayley transform when calculating the velocity-space rotations. The resulting algorithm is explicitly solvable, while preserving the norm of velocities down to machine precision. We demonstrate that the method has the same order of numerical convergence as the traditional stochastic Euler-Maruyama method. The numerical scheme is benchmarked by simulating the pitch-angle scattering of a particle beam and comparing with the analytical solution. Benchmark results show excellent agreement with theoretical predictions, showcasing the remarkable long-time accuracy of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:To improve the accuracy of solving the Poisson equation and the efficiency of handling complex boundary shapes in the particle method, this paper proposes a Local Regular-distributed Background Particles (LRBP) as an alternative to traditional boundary handling methods. This method avoids the trouble of arranging virtual particles by introducing background particles, making it suitable for problems with complex boundary shapes. In addition, based on the framework of the weak form Poisson equation, the boundary conditions are easily applied, and the calculations are more accurate. Furthermore, this method allows for different interpolation methods inside and outside the boundary, providing flexibility and versatility. These characteristics are well demonstrated in the validation examples, which indicate its potential to solve complex flow problems.

Abstract:We introduce an extension of the particle-in-cell method that captures the Landau collisional effects in the Vlasov–Maxwell–Landau equations. The method arises from a regularisation of the variational formulation of the Landau equation, leading to a discretisation of the collision operator that conserves mass, charge, momentum and energy, while increasing the (regularised) entropy. The collisional effects appear as a fully deterministic effective force, thus the method does not require any transport–collision splitting. The scheme can be used in arbitrary dimension, and for a general interaction, including the Coulomb case. We validate the scheme on scenarios such as the Landau damping, the two-stream instability and the Weibel instability, demonstrating its effectiveness in the numerical simulation of plasma.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel model is proposed to investigate the neutron transport in scattering and absorbing medium. This solution to the linear Boltzmann equation is expanded from the idea of lattice Boltzmann method(LBM) with the collision and streaming process. The theoretical derivation of lattice Boltzmann model for transient neutron transport problem is proposed for the first time.The fully implicit backward difference scheme is used to ensure the numerical stability, and relaxation time and equilibrium particle distribution function are obtained. To validate the new lattice Boltzmann model, the LBM formulation is tested for a homogenous media with different sources, and both transient and steady-state LBM results get a good agreement with the benchmark solutions.

Abstract:We derive the spatially homogeneous Landau equation for Maxwellian molecules from a natural stochastic interacting particle system. More precisely, we control the relative entropy between the joint law of the particle system and the tensorized law of the Landau equation. To obtain this, we establish as key tools the pointwise logarithmic gradient and Hessian estimates of the density function and also a new Law of Large Numbers result for the particle system. The logarithmic estimates are derived via the Bernstein method and the parabolic maximum principle, while the Law of Large Numbers result comes from crucial observations on the control of moments at the particle level.
