Abstract:A search for electroweak production of a single vector-like T quark in association with a bottom (b) quark in the all-hadronic decay channel is presented. This search uses proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC during 2016-2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. The T quark is assumed to have charge 2/3 and decay to a top (t) quark and a Higgs (H) or Z boson. Hadronic decays of the t quark and the H or Z boson are reconstructed from the kinematic properties of jets, including those containing b hadrons. No deviation from the standard model prediction is observed in the reconstructed tH and tZ invariant mass distributions. The 95% confidence level upper limits on the product of the production cross section and branching fraction of a T quark produced in association with a b quark and decaying via tH or tZ range from 1260 to 68 fb for T quark masses of 600-1200 GeV.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to search for a single vector - like quark (VLQ), especially the T - quark (with charge 2/3) produced electroweakly and associated with the b - quark. The research uses the proton - proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment between 2016 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb\(^{-1}\) with a collision energy of \(\sqrt{s}=13\) TeV. The T - quark is assumed to be able to decay into a top - quark (t - quark) and a Higgs boson (H) or a Z - boson. By analyzing the tH or tZ invariant mass distributions in the all - hadronic final state, the research aims to explore the mass range of the T - quark from 600 to 1200 GeV and set an upper limit at the 95% confidence level, that is, the cross - section of the T - quark produced in association with the b - quark multiplied by the branching ratio. Specifically, the objectives of the research are: - **Detect new particles**: Look for new particles beyond the Standard Model, that is, the existence of a single vector - like T - quark. - **Verify theoretical models**: Verify theoretical predictions through experimental data, especially regarding the production mechanism of the T - quark and its decay modes. - **Set physical limits**: Set strict upper limits for the production cross - section and decay branching ratio of the T - quark, thereby providing constraints on possible new physics models. The paper mentions that through the analysis of the reconstructed tH and tZ invariant mass distributions, no deviation from the Standard Model predictions was observed. Finally, for the T - quark mass in the range of 600 to 1200 GeV, the research gives the upper limit of the cross - section multiplied by the branching ratio at the 95% confidence level, ranging from 1260 fb to 68 fb. This result helps to rule out some theoretical assumptions beyond the Standard Model and provides an important reference for future research.
