Abstract:Experimental measurements often present corrupted data and outliers that can strongly affect the main coherent structures extracted with the classical modal analysis techniques. This effect is amplified at high frequencies, whose corresponding modes are more susceptible to contamination from measurement noise and uncertainties. Such limitations are overcome by a novel approach proposed here, the robust spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (robust SPOD), which implements the robust principal component analysis within the SPOD technique. The new technique is firstly presented with details on its algorithm, and its effectiveness is tested on two different fluid dynamics problems: the subsonic jet flow field numerically simulated, and the flow within an open cavity experimentally analyzed in [48] . The analysis of the turbulent jet data, corrupted both with salt and pepper and Gaussian noise, shows how the robust SPOD produces more converged and physically interpretable modes than the classical SPOD; moreover, the use of the robust SPOD as a tool for de-noising data, based on the signal reconstruction from de-noised modes, is also presented. Applying robust SPOD to the open cavity flow has revealed that it yields smoother spatial distributions of modes, particularly at high frequencies and when considering higher-order modes, compared to standard SPOD.

Frequency-time analysis, low-rank reconstruction and denoising of turbulent flows using SPOD

Abstract:Four different applications of spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (SPOD): low-rank reconstruction, denoising, frequency-time analysis, and prewhitening are demonstrated on large-eddy simulation data of a turbulent jet. SPOD-based low-rank reconstruction can be performed by direct inversion of a truncated SPOD. This spectral inversion problem, however, is ambiguous since SPOD relies on spectral estimation. We demonstrate SPOD-based flow field reconstruction using direct inversion of the SPOD algorithm (frequency-domain approach) and propose an alternative approach based on projection of the time series data onto the modes (time-domain approach). While the SPOD optimally represents the flow in a statistical sense, the time-domain approach seeks an optimal reconstruction of each instantaneous flow field. We further propose a SPOD-based denoising strategy that is based on hard-thresholding of the SPOD eigenvalues. The proposed strategy achieves significant noise reduction while facilitating drastic data compression. In contrast to standard methods of frequency-time analysis such as wavelet transform, a proposed SPOD-based approach yields a spectrogram that characterizes the temporal evolution of spatially coherent flow structures. In the frequency-domain, time-varying expansion coefficients can be obtained by basing the SPOD on a sliding window. This approach, however, is computationally intractable, and an alternative strategy based on convolution in the time-domain is presented. When applied to the turbulent jet data, SPOD-based frequency-time analysis reveals that the intermittent occurrence of large-scale coherent structures is directly associated with high-energy events. This work suggests that the time-domain approach is preferable for low-rank reconstruction of individual snapshots, and the frequency-domain approach for denoising and frequency-time analysis.

Abstract:Distributed sensing of cyber-physical systems has become feasible with recent developments in sensor technology, wireless communication and distributed computing. Distributed sensing generates huge amounts of data from the events occurring in the physical side, which should be promptly reflected in the cyber side so that actions can be made timely by the computing systems. Due to the dense temporal-spatial distribution of the measured data, great challenges have been posed in terms of data storage, information processing and communications. The proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) method is a powerful tool to extract dominant information from distributed observational data, which has been widely used in signal processing and pattern analysis of fluid turbulence. The classical POD method implements dominant information extraction when the entire data set is known. However, in real-time measurements, new data is collected and incorporated into the historic data set at each sampling time. We propose a recursive proper orthogonal decomposition (rPOD) method based on the operator perturbation theory, where the accumulative truncation error can be controlled by a gradient search algorithm. This method is illustrated with two state-of-the-art problems governed by the heat conduction equation (1D) and the Navier-Stokes equations (2D) respectively.

Abstract:We consider the frequency domain form of proper orthogonal decomposition (POD), called spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (SPOD). Spectral POD is derived from a space–time POD problem for statistically stationary flows and leads to modes that each oscillate at a single frequency. This form of POD goes back to the original work of Lumley ( Stochastic Tools in Turbulence , Academic Press, 1970), but has been overshadowed by a space-only form of POD since the 1990s. We clarify the relationship between these two forms of POD and show that SPOD modes represent structures that evolve coherently in space and time, while space-only POD modes in general do not. We also establish a relationship between SPOD and dynamic mode decomposition (DMD); we show that SPOD modes are in fact optimally averaged DMD modes obtained from an ensemble DMD problem for stationary flows. Accordingly, SPOD modes represent structures that are dynamic in the same sense as DMD modes but also optimally account for the statistical variability of turbulent flows. Finally, we establish a connection between SPOD and resolvent analysis. The key observation is that the resolvent-mode expansion coefficients must be regarded as statistical quantities to ensure convergent approximations of the flow statistics. When the expansion coefficients are uncorrelated, we show that SPOD and resolvent modes are identical. Our theoretical results and the overall utility of SPOD are demonstrated using two example problems: the complex Ginzburg–Landau equation and a turbulent jet.

Eduction of acoustics-related coherent structures from Schlieren images of supersonic twin jets by coupling Doak's decomposition and SPOD

Abstract:This work proposes a methodology to improve the extraction of coherent structures associated with the generation of acoustic fluctuations in turbulent jets from high-speed Schlieren images. This methodology employs the momentum potential theory of Doak to compute potential (acoustic and thermal) energy fluctuations from the Schlieren images by solving a Poisson equation, in the manner introduced by Prasad and Gaitonde. The calculation of momentum potential fluctuations is then combined with the spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (SPOD) technique: the cross-spectral density is defined based on the momentum potential field, instead of the Schlieren images. While the latter are dominated by a broad range of vortical fluctuations in the turbulent mixing region of unheated high-speed jets, the momentum potential field is governed by acoustic fluctuations and its spatial structure in the frequency domain is remarkably coherent. This approach is applied here to Schlieren visualizations of a twin-jet configuration with a small jet separation and two supersonic operation conditions: a perfectly-expanded and a overexpanded one. The SPOD modes based on momentum potential fluctuations retain the wavepacket structure including the direct Mach-wave radiation together with upstream- and downstream-traveling acoustic waves, similar to SPOD modes based on the Schlieren images. However, they result in a remarkably lower-rank decomposition than Schlieren-based SPOD and, as opposed to the latter, provide an effective separation of twin-jet fluctuations into independent toroidal and flapping oscillations that are recovered as different SPOD modes.

Abstract:An adaptive algorithm for spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (SPOD) of mixed broadband-tonal turbulent flows is developed. Sharp peak resolution at tonal frequencies is achieved by locally minimizing bias of the spectrum. Smooth spectrum estimates of broadband regions are achieved by locally reducing variance of the spectrum. The method utilizes multitaper estimation with sine tapers. An iterative criterion based on modal convergence is introduced to enable the SPOD to adapt to spectral features. For tonal flows, the adaptivity is controlled by a single user input; for broadband flows, a constant number of sine tapers is recommended without adaptivity. The discrete version of Parseval's theorem for SPOD is stated. Proper normalization of the tapers ensures that Parseval's theorem is satisfied in expectation. Drastic savings in computational complexity and memory usage are facilitated by two aspects: (i) sine tapers, which permit post hoc windowing of a single Fourier transform; and (ii) time-domain lossless compression using a QR or eigenvalue decomposition. Sine-taper SPOD is demonstrated on time-resolved particle image velocimetry (TR-PIV) data from an open cavity flow (Zhang et al. in Exp Fluids 61(226):1–12, https://doi.org/10.1007/s00348-020-03057-8, 2020) and high-fidelity large-eddy simulation (LES) data from a round jet (Brès et al. in J. Fluid Mech. 851:83–124, https://doi.org/10.1017/jfm.2018.476, 2018), with and without adaptivity. For the tonal cavity flow, the adaptive algorithm outperforms Slepian-based multitaper SPOD in terms of variance and local bias of the spectrum, mode convergence, and memory usage. The tonal frequencies associated with the Rossiter instability are accurately identified. For both the tonal cavity and the broadband jet flows, results comparable to or better than those from standard SPOD based on Welch's overlapped segment averaging are obtained with up to 75% fewer snapshots, including similar convergence of the Rossiter modes and Kelvin-Helmholtz wavepacket structures for the cavity and jet examples, respectively. Drawing from these examples, we establish best practices.

Abstract:Spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (SPOD) is an increasingly popular modal analysis method in the field of fluid dynamics due to its specific properties: a linear system forced with white noise should have SPOD modes identical to response modes from resolvent analysis. The SPOD, coupled with the Welch method for spectral estimation, may require long time-resolved data sets. In this work, a linearised Ginzburg-Landau model is considered in order to study the method's convergence. SPOD modes of the white-noise forced equation are computed and compared with corresponding response resolvent modes. The quantified error is shown to be related to the time length of Welch blocks (spectral window size) normalised by a convective time. Subsequently, an algorithm based on a temporal data shift is devised to further improve SPOD convergence and is applied to the Ginzburg-Landau system. Next, its efficacy is demonstrated in a numerical database of a boundary layer subject to bypass transition. The proposed approach achieves substantial improvement in mode convergence with smaller spectral window sizes with respect to the standard method. Furthermore, SPOD modes display growing wall-normal and span-wise velocity components along the stream-wise direction, a feature which had not yet been observed and is also predicted by a global resolvent calculation. The shifting algorithm for the SPOD opens the possibility for using the method on datasets with time series of moderate duration, often produced by large simulations.

Spectral Analysis Modal Methods (SAMMs) using Non-Time-Resolved PIV

Abstract:We present spectral analysis modal methods (SAMMs) to perform POD in the frequency domain using non-time-resolved Particle Image Velocity (PIV) data combined with unsteady surface pressure measurements. In particular, time-resolved unsteady surface pressure measurements are synchronized with non-time-resolved planar PIV measurements acquired at 15 Hz in a Mach 0.6 cavity flow. Leveraging the spectral linear stochastic estimation (LSE) method of Tinney et al. (2006), we first estimate the cross correlations between the velocity field and the unsteady pressure sensors via sequential time shifts, followed by a Fast Fourier transform to obtain the pressure-velocity cross spectral density matrix. This leads to a linear multiple-input / multiple-output (MIMO) model that determines the optimal transfer functions between the input cavity wall pressure and the output velocity field. Two variants of SAMMs are developed and applied. The first, termed "SAMM-SPOD", combines the MIMO model with the SPOD algorithm of Towne et al. (2018). The second, called "SAMM-RR'', adds independent sources and uses a sorted eigendecomposition of the input pressure cross-spectral matrix to enable an efficient reduced-rank eigendecomposition of the velocity cross-spectral matrix. In both cases, the resulting rank-1 POD eigenvalues associated with the Rossiter frequencies exhibit very good agreement with those obtained using independent time-resolved PIV measurements. The results demonstrate that SAMMs provide a methodology to perform space-time POD without requiring a high-speed PIV system, while avoiding potential pitfalls associated with traditional time-domain LSE.

Abstract:Motivated by the aero-acoustic feedback loop phenomenon in high speed free jets and impinging jets, a thorough examination of a POD (Proper Orthogonal Decomposition)-Galerkin method to determine the average convection velocity of coherent structures in the shear layer is presented in this paper. The technique is shown to be applicable to both time resolved as well as time unresolved data, if the data set meets certain requirements. Using a detailed sensitivity analysis on a synthetic data set, a quantitative estimate on the required time resolution for the technique has been found, which can be useful for both experimental, as well as numerical studies investigating the aero-acoustic feedback loop in high speed flows. Moreover, some innovative ways to apply the technique are also demonstrated using a simulated data set, showing the effectiveness of the technique to any general problem in supersonic jets, heat transfer, combustion or other areas in fluid mechanics, where an advection process can be identified.

Abstract:The spectral characterization of flow-field parameters provides a new perspective for understanding the spatiotemporal evolution of unsteady supersonic exhaust plumes and for extracting typical structures. In this study, a large-eddy simulation is performed to calculate the three-dimensional unsteady supersonic plume flow field of rocket engines, and a spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (SPOD) method with a spatiotemporal separation is established. This approach is used to extract the coherent structural features of the unsteady exhaust plume flow field and analyze the mode space structure at different frequencies. The three-dimensional reconstruction and denoising of the exhaust plume flow-field parameters can be achieved via the frequency- and time-domain reconstructions of the SPOD algorithm and oblique projection method, respectively. The ground rocket exhaust plume of ballistic evaluation motor-II is analyzed. The results indicate that the SPOD method can effectively extract the single-frequency mode structure of the reactive supersonic flow field, and that low-order behavior appears in the m = 0 and m = 1 azimuth modes. The potential core exhibits a high-frequency wave-packet structure that is affected by shock waves and shear layers. Time-domain reconstruction based on the oblique projection method facilitates the capture of the dynamic characteristics of the flow field. For the first-order SPOD mode, the frequency- and time-domain reconstruction errors are 3.3% and 1.5%, respectively. The frequency-domain reconstruction method exhibits a 4% improvement in denoising ability compared to low-pass filters. This study provides a novel method for the spectral characterization and spatiotemporal feature extraction of supersonic exhaust plume flow fields.

Abstract:The spatial autocorrelation (SPAC) method is one of the most efficient ways to extract phase velocities of surface waves from ambient seismic noise. Most studies apply the method based on the assumption that the wavefield of ambient noise is diffuse. However, the actual distribution of sources is neither diffuse nor stationary. In this study, we examined the reliability and limitations of the SPAC method with a directional wavefield. We calculated the SPAC coefficients and phase velocities from a directional wavefield for a four-layer model and characterized the limitations of the SPAC. We then applied the SPAC method to real data in Karamay, China. Our results show that, 1) the SPAC method can accurately measure surface wave phase velocities from a square array with a directional wavefield down to a wavelength of twice the shortest interstation distance; and 2) phase velocities obtained from real data by the SPAC method are stable and reliable, which demonstrates that this method can be applied to measure phase velocities in a square array with a directional wavefield.

Abstract:Abstract This paper investigates the application of proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) for data obtained from visualizations. Using the POD method, the flow field behind one and two cylinders in a staggered configuration was analyzed. The data processed by this method were obtained from experimental measurements of flow fields using the particle image velocimetry (PIV) method and visualization. The dominant frequencies of the flow pattern from these data were compared using constant temperature anemometry (CTA) measurements. Attention was mainly focused on the flow at three Reynolds numbers: 500, 1200, and 2500. Velocity and vortex fields were created from PIV measurements in the wind tunnel for Re = 500, and video images of flow fields were obtained from dye visualizations in the hydrodynamic tunnel. The components of velocity, vorticity (both of PIV), and change in grayscale (from visualization) were used as input data for POD analysis. A methodology for data processing from visualizations was developed for subsequent analysis using the POD method. A new technique has been found to identify structures in the wake of the cylinders in a staggered configuration by analyzing POD based on various types of input data. The measured fields of dominant frequencies from the CTA and a thorough analysis of the POD modes and their relative energy values for each type of data made it possible to identify the structures and mechanisms that occur in the wake of cylinders. This analysis facilitated a better understanding of the importance of these structures and mechanisms, which can then be used to control the flow behind the cylinders. Graphic abstract

Abstract:The investigation on the flow field and mixing characteristics of resonant sound mixing is of great significance for the dispersion mixing of superfine materials. In order to simulate the flow field and dispersion characteristics of resonant acoustic mixing, a gas-liquid-solid three-phase flow model based on the coupled level-set and volume-of-fluid (CLSVOF) and discrete particle model (DPM) was established. The CLSVOF model solves the gas-liquid interface, and the DPM model tracks the particle position. Then, the particle image velocimetry (PIV) experiment was performed using a self-made resonance acoustic hybrid prototype under different oscillation accelerations, and the radial velocity distribution between the experiment and simulation was compared. Finally, the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) is used to decompose the flow field under different oscillation accelerations and fill levels, and the energy distribution law and the energy structure of different scales are extracted. The results show that the energy of the instantaneous flow field of the resonant sound is mainly concentrated in the low-order mode, and a close relationship was revealed between the energy distribution law and dispersion behavior of particles. The larger the small-scale coherent structures distribute, the more energy it has and the more favorable it is for fast and uniform dispersion.
Analysis of POD and EPOD for Unsteady Flow Field of Wind Turbine Airfoil

Abstract:The profile flow around the wind turbine airfoil has a significant impact on the overall performance and the noise of a wind turbine. In this paper, a combination method of large eddy simulation (LES) and the solution of Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings (FW-H) equation is used to obtain the unsteady flow field and the far-field aeroacoustic noise of a wind turbine airfoil. The dominant modes of the unsteady vorticity at the angle of attack of 8° are extracted by the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD). The modal structure of the dominant modes indicates that the trailing edge vortices and the laminar separation bubble are the main unsteady feature of the airfoil flow. The modal structures most related to the far-field aeracoustics noise are obtained by the extend proper orthogonal decomposition (EPOD). The modal results show that the vortices in the boundary layer and the large-scale vortices in the wake are most relevant to the generation and propagation of the aeracoustics noise.

Abstract:Coherent structures in surrounding flows around ground vehicles play an important role in characterizing their aerodynamic features. However, due to restrictions of traditional reduced-order models, extracting physically meaningful coherent structures from turbulent flows with massive separation still remains a challenging issue. The spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (SPOD), which extracts modes optimally representing the space-time flow statistics, enables the feasibility of further modeling and control of vehicle aerodynamic features. This study intends to investigate the influence of spectral estimation parameters on SPOD results, so as to serve as fundamentals for future works into this topic. The time-resolved pressure field obtained from a large-eddy simulation considering a generic high-speed train is used as the snapshot database. Spectral estimation parameters including block number, frequency resolution, and cutoff frequency are, respectively, discussed to quantify their impacts on both SPOD spectra and modes. The results reveal that, with the increasing of block number, higher reliability and accuracy of SPOD prediction can be achieved, with the block number of 20–30 that leads both requirements of efficiency and precision. The frequency axis with finer resolution reproduces more detailed spectral information, with the eigenvalue distribution and spatial distribution of mode energy under acceptable accuracy when dimensionless frequency resolution reaches 0.025. Moreover, the reducing of cutoff frequency results in increasing unresolved energy content, which will be distributed mostly near the corresponding cutoff frequency, and more minor scaled spatial structures in SPOD modes. The findings and approaches could also work as references for wider application field of SPOD approach.

Abstract:This work presents a methodology to extract coherent structures from high-speed schlieren images of turbulent twin jets which are more physically interpretable than those obtained with currently existing techniques. Recently, Prasad and Gaitonde (J Fluid Mech 940:1–11, 2022) introduced an approach which employs the momentum potential theory of Doak (J Sound Vib 131(1):67–90, 1989) to compute potential (acoustic and thermal) energy fluctuations from the schlieren images by solving a Poisson equation, and combines it with spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (SPOD) to educe coherent structures from the momentum potential field instead of the original schlieren field. While the latter field is dominated by a broad range of vortical fluctuations in the turbulent mixing region of unheated high-speed jets, the momentum potential field is governed by fluctuations which are intimately related to acoustic emission, and its spatial structure in the frequency domain is very organized. The proposed methodology in this paper improves the technique of Prasad and Gaitonde (J Fluid Mech 940:1–11, 2022) in three new ways. First, the solution of the Poisson equation is carried out in the frequency-wavenumber domain instead of the time-space domain, which simplifies and integrates the solution of the Poisson equation within the SPOD framework based on momentum potential fluctuations. Second, the issue of solving the Poisson equation on a finite domain with ad hoc boundary conditions is explicitly addressed, identifying and removing those unphysical harmonic components introduced in the solution process. Third, the solution of the SPOD problem in terms of momentum potential fluctuations is used to reconstruct schlieren SPOD fields associated with each mode, allowing the visualization of the obtained coherent structures also in terms of the density gradient. The method is applied here to schlieren images of a twin-jet configuration with a small jet separation at two supersonic operation conditions: a perfectly-expanded and an overexpanded one. The SPOD modes based on momentum potential fluctuations retain the wavepacket structure including the direct Mach-wave radiation, together with upstream- and downstream-traveling acoustic waves, similar to SPOD modes based on the schlieren images. However, for the same dataset, they result in a lower-rank decomposition than schlieren-based SPOD and provide an effective separation of twin-jet fluctuations into independent toroidal and flapping oscillations that are recovered as different SPOD modes. These coherent structures are more consistent with twin-jet wavepacket models available in the literature than those originally obtained with direct schlieren-based SPOD, facilitating their interpretation and comparison against theoretical analyses.

Abstract:To analyze the complex spatiotemporal evolution law of the high-speed jet flow field in a liquid-ring pump ejector, both the classic and spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (SPOD) methods were introduced to decompose the transient flow field based on the numerical large eddy simulation. The proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) reduced order model (ROM) of the complex flow in the ejector was established to analyze the transient characteristics and reconstruct the flow field. The spatial mode characteristics of density, pressure and vorticity field, and the frequency domain characteristics of mode coefficients were analyzed. The results show that the spatiotemporal decoupling analysis of a high-speed jet flow field can be accomplished by the POD and SPOD methods. A large-scale symmetric coherent structure is formed in the shear layer of the first two modes of vorticity, and a small-scale antisymmetric structure is formed at the trailing edge of the jet flow for the third and fourth modes. This reflects the evolutionary characteristics of the jet shear vortex. There is a significant spatial correlation between the density and pressure modes, reflecting that the evolution of the two structures has important correlation characteristics. The spectral analysis of the mode coefficients shows that the dominant frequencies of 1250 Hz and 18 kHz correspond to the self-excited oscillation frequency of shock waves and the vortex shedding frequency. The POD-ROM can reconstruct the high-speed flow field of the ejector with enough accuracy using the first 30-order modes, and the root mean square error and mean absolute percentage error for the velocity prediction are 0.48% and 0.24%, respectively.

Abstract:This study investigated the performance of proper orthogonal decomposition (POD), discrete Fourier transformation (DFT), time-domain spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (td-SPOD), and frequency-domain spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (fd-SPOD) in the identification of the multi-dominant coherent structures of flow fields. All decompositions were conducted using experimental datasets of swirling jets obtained by tomographic particle image velocimetry (Tomo-PIV), with swirl numbers ( S ) of 0.0, 0.41, and 0.87 and a Reynolds number fixed at 3000. Mode decomposition, temporal flow dynamics, and the low-rank reconstruction of three-dimensional (3D) swirling jets by POD, td-SPOD, DFT, and fd-SPOD were compared. POD, td-SPOD, and DFT were implemented using the fd-SPOD framework with various filter sizes, and fd-SPOD was executed by data blocking, Fourier transformation, and POD. Modal analysis of the non-swirl jet indicates that POD, DFT, and td-SPOD did not provide sufficiently clear structures, whereas fd-SPOD performed best in identifying ring-like vortex structures and vortex ring merging. The temporal flow dynamics of a low-swirl jet with S = 0.41 show that td-SPOD improved the correlation of the mode time coefficient in linked modes and provided temporal flow dynamics that enabled monitoring of the flow process. The interactions between the double-helix structure at a Strouhal number (St) of 0.26 and the single-helix structure at St = 0.13 could be analyzed in the time evolution provided by td-SPOD. The fd-SPOD and td-SPOD for the swirl jet at S = 0.87 were directly related through a Fourier transform, and the first several modal pairs with the highest harmonic correlation intensity obtained by td-SPOD agree with the most energetic first-order mode at each frequency obtained by fd-SPOD. The reconstruction of the 3D flow field from the low-order modes shows that POD was suitable for denoising the flow field with reconstruction of the flow field through mode truncation. Overall, the results reveal that td-SPOD is suitable for investigating mode interactions between various wavelengths and the time-dynamic evolution of modes, whereas fd-SPOD is suitable for mode extraction with strict separation of the modes according to frequency.

Abstract:Acoustic mode analysis for aero-engines can offer valuable insights for the design of silent engines as well as for fault diagnosis. Commonly, this is done in the (spatial) Fourier domain, necessitating the use of multiple uniformly spaced microphones to ensure adequate resolution. Recent works show that sub-Nyquist estimation is feasible using sparse reconstruction frameworks, although such modelling generally introduces an estimation bias that has to be compensated for. Moreover, there is a growing interest in monitoring mode amplitude over continuous time, as it can offer crucial insights for diagnosing operational conditions. In this work, we introduce a Block Orthogonal Matching Pursuit (BOMP) method for continuous time mode analysis, exploiting the underlying structural sparsity of the signal model. Specifically, the (pseudo) ℓ0−norm penalty is employed to induce sparsity in the wavenumber domain, whereas a block structure is imposed as a constraint to monitor the amplitude variation in the time domain. The effectiveness of the BOMP is evaluated using both numerical simulations and experimental measurements, indicating the proposed method’s preferable performance as compared to the classic Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) and Orthogonal Matching Pursuit (OMP) methods.
Automatic source localization and spectra generation from sparse beamforming maps

Abstract:Beamforming is an imaging tool for the investigation of aeroacoustic phenomena and results in high-dimensional data that are broken down to spectra by integrating spatial regions of interest. This paper presents two methods that enable the automated identification of aeroacoustic sources in sparse beamforming maps and the extraction of their corresponding spectra to overcome the manual definition of regions of interest. The methods are evaluated on two scaled airframe half-model wind tunnel measurements and on a generic monopole source. The first relies on the spatial normal distribution of aeroacoustic broadband sources in sparse beamforming maps. The second uses hierarchical clustering methods. Both methods are robust to statistical noise and predict the existence, location, and spatial probability estimation for sources based on which regions of interest are automatically determined.
