Abstract:We provide choiceless proofs using infinitesimals of the global versions of Peano's existence theorem and Osgood's theorem on maximal solutions. We characterize all solutions in terms of infinitesimal perturbations. Our proofs are more effective than traditional non-infinitesimal proofs found in the literature. The background logical structure is the internal set theory SPOT, conservative over ZF.

Abstract:We prove that suitably generic pairs of linear equations on an even number of variables are uncommon. This verifies a conjecture of Kamčev, Morrison and the second author. Moreover, we prove that any large system containing such a $(2\times k)$-system as a minimal subsystem is uncommon.

Abstract:We prove local (in time) existence and uniqueness for a class of infinite-dimensional Nash systems, namely systems of infinitely many Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations set in an infinite-dimensional Euclidean space. Such systems have been recently showed (see <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2401.06534" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2401.06534">arXiv:2401.06534</a>) to arise in the theory of stochastic differential games with interactions governed by sparse graphs, under structural assumptions that inspired the hypotheses exploited in the present work. Contextually, we also prove a general linear result, providing a priori estimates, stable with respect to the dimension, for transport-diffusion equations whose drifts (and their derivatives) enjoy appropriate decay properties.

Abstract:We give another proof of a theorem of Rabinowitz and Stredulinsky obtaining infinite transition solutions for an Allen--Cahn equation. Rabinowitz and Stredulinsky have constructed infinite transition solutions as locally minimal solutions, but it is still an interesting question to establish these solutions by other method. Our result may attract the interest of constructing solutions with the shape of locally minimal solutions of Rabinowitz and Stredulinsky for problems defined on descrete group.

Abstract:Proof formats for SAT solvers have diversified over the last decade, enabling new features such as extended resolution-like capabilities, very general extension-free rules, inclusion of proof hints, and pseudo-boolean reasoning. Interference-based methods have been proven effective, and some theoretical work has been undertaken to better explain their limits and semantics. In this work, we combine the subsumption redundancy notion from (Buss, Thapen 2019) and the overwrite logic framework from (Rebola-Pardo, Suda 2018). Natural generalizations then become apparent, enabling even shorter proofs of the pigeonhole principle (compared to those from (Heule, Kiesl, Biere 2017)) and smaller unsatisfiable core generation.

An introduction to Lorenzen's "Algebraic and logistic investigations on free lattices'' (1951)

Abstract:Lorenzen's ``Algebraische und logistische Untersuchungen über freie Verbände'' appeared in 1951 in The Journal of Symbolic Logic. These ``Investigations'' have immediately been recognised as a landmark in the history of infinitary proof theory. Their approach and method of proof have not been incorporated into the corpus of proof theory. Lorenzen proves the admissibility of cut by double induction, on the cut formula and on the complexity of the derivations, without using any ordinal assignment, contrary to the presentation of cut elimination in most standard texts on proof theory. We propose this introduction with the intent of giving a new impetus to their reception. The ``Investigations'' are best known for providing a constructive proof of consistency for ramified type theory without axiom of reducibility. They do so by showing that it is a part of a trivially consistent ``inductive calculus'' that describes our knowledge of arithmetic without detour. The proof resorts only to the inductive definition of formulas and theorems. They propose furthermore a definition of a semilattice, of a distributive lattice, of a pseudocomplemented semilattice, and of a countably complete boolean algebra as deductive calculuses, and show how to present them for constructing conservatively the respective free object over a given preordered set. They illustrate that lattice theory is a bridge between algebra and logic for which the construction of an element corresponds to a step in a proof. We shall describe the history of their reception, which focusses mainly on the omega-rule. The fruitfulness of this device is immediately recognised by Kurt Schütte. It triggers the analysis by Ackermann (1951) of the infinitary inductive definition of the accessibility predicate with the goal of proving transfinite induction up to ordinal terms beyond epsilon_0, which is also taken over by Schütte (1952).

We get infinitely many solutions. We deal with asymptotically linear cases for both systems.
On Non-standard Models of Arithmetic with Uncountable Standard Systems

Abstract:In 1960s, Dana Scott gave a recursion theoretic characterization of standard systems of countable non-standard models of arithmetic, i.e., collections of sets of standard natural numbers coded in non-standard models. Later, Knight and Nadel proved that Scott's characterization also applies to non-standard models of arithmetic with cardinality $\aleph_1$. But the question, whether the limit on cardinality can be removed from the above characterization, remains a long standing question, known as the Scott Set Problem. This article presents two constructions of non-standard models of arithmetic with non-trivial uncountable standard systems. The first one leads to a new proof of the above theorem of Knight and Nadel, and the second proves the existence of models with non-trivial standard systems of cardinality the continuum. A partial answer to the Scott Set Problem under certain set theoretic hypothesis also follows from the second construction.

Abstract:For a finite set $\cal F$ of polynomials over fixed finite prime field of size $p$ containing all polynomials $x^2 - x$ a Nullstellensatz proof of the unsolvability of the system $$ f = 0\ ,\ \mbox{ all } f \in {\cal F} $$ in the field is a linear combination $\sum_{f \in {\cal F}} \ h_f \cdot f$ that equals to $1$ in the ring of polynomails. The measure of complexity of such a proof is its degree: $\max_f deg(h_f f)$. We study the problem to establish degree lower bounds for some {\em extended} NS proof systems: these systems prove the unsolvability of $\cal F$ by proving the unsolvability of a bigger set ${\cal F}\cup {\cal E}$, where set $\cal E$ may use new variables $r$ and contains all polynomials $r^p - r$, and satisfies the following soundness condition: -- - Any $0,1$-assignment $\overline a$ to variables $\overline x$ can be appended by an assignment $\overline b$ to variables $\overline r$ such that for all $g \in {\cal E}$ it holds that $g(\overline a, \overline b) = 0$. We define a notion of pseudo-solutions of $\cal F$ and prove that the existence of pseudo-solutions with suitable parameters implies lower bounds for two extended NS proof systems ENS and UENS defined in Buss et al. (1996/97). Further we give a combinatorial example of $\cal F$ and candidate pseudo-solutions based on the pigeonhole principle.

Infinite systems of equations in abelian and nilpotent groups

Abstract:Every abelian (and even every nilpotent) group contains a solution of any finite unimodular system of equations over itself. However, this is not true for infinite systems. We deduced a criterion for a periodic abelian group to contain a solution of any infinite unimodular system of equations over itself. Using this criterion, we show that nilpotent groups of bounded period also contain solutions of all infinite unimodular systems of equations over themselves. Solvability of every nonsingular infinite system of equations in each divisible nilpotent group is shown as well.

Abstract:Sequences diverge either because they head off to infinity or because they oscillate. Part 1 constructs a non-Archimedean framework of infinite numbers that is large enough to contain asymptotic limit points for non-oscillating sequences that head off to infinity. It begins by defining Archimedean classes of infinite numbers. Each class is denoted by a prototype sequence. These prototypes are used as asymptotes for determining leading term limits of sequences. By subtracting off leading term limits and repeating, limits are obtained for a subset of sequences called here ``smooth sequences". $\mathbb{I}_n$ is defined as the set of ratios of limits of smooth sequences. It is shown that $\mathbb{I}_n$ is an ordered field that includes real, infinite and infinitesimal numbers.

Abstract:We introduce a broad class of equations that are described by a graph, which includes many well-studied systems. For these, we show that the number of solutions (or the dimension of the solution set) can be bounded by studying certain induced subgraphs. As corollaries, we obtain novel bounds in spectral graph theory on the multiplicities of graph eigenvalues, and in nonlinear dynamical system on the dimension of the equilibrium set of a network.

On the equational theory of finite modular lattices

Abstract:It is shown that there is $N$ such that there is no algorithm to decide for identities in at most $N$ variables validity in the class of finite modular lattices. This is based on Slobodskoi's result that the Restricted Word Problem is unsolvable for the class of finite groups and relies on Freese's technique of capturing group presentations within free modular lattices.

Abstract:Our main result (Theorem A) shows the incompleteness of any consistent sequential theory T T formulated in a finite language such that T T is axiomatized by a collection of sentences of bounded quantifier-alternation-depth. Our proof employs an appropriate reduction mechanism to rule out the possibility of completeness by simply invoking Tarski's Undefinability of Truth theorem. We also use the proof strategy of Theorem A to obtain other incompleteness results.

Abstract:We showed with J. P. Gollin that if a (possibly infinite) homogeneous linear equation system has only the trivial solution, then there exists an injective function from the variables to the equations such that each variable appears with non-zero coefficient in its image. Shortly after, a more elementary proof was found by Aharoni and Guo. In this note we present a very short matroid-theoretic proof of this theorem.

Abstract:We describe a theory of finite sets, and investigate the analogue of Dedekind's theory of natural number systems (simply infinite systems) in this theory. Unlike the infinitary case, in our theory, natural number systems come in differing lengths and with different closure properties. We give examples of natural number systems incomparable in length; we define hierarchies of natural number systems closed under increasingly powerful functions; and we describe a method by which to construct natural number systems with given closure properties. These natural number systems form natural models for various systems of weak arithmetic.
