Abstract:Let $c$ be the family of irreducible representations of a Weyl group $W$ corresponding to a two-sided cell of $W$. We define a subset $A_c$ of $c$ which contains the special representation of $W$ in $c$ and is in canonical bijection with the set of constructible representations of $W$ attached to $c$.

Abstract:We study representations of simply-laced Weyl groups which are equipped with canonical bases. Our main result is that for a large class of representations, the separable elements of the Weyl group $W$ act on these canonical bases by bijections up to lower-order terms. Examples of this phenomenon include the action of separable permutations on the Kazhdan--Lusztig basis of irreducible representations for the symmetric group, and the action of separable elements of $W$ on dual canonical bases of weight zero in tensor product representations of a Lie algebra. Our methods arise from categorical representation theory, and in particular the study of the perversity of Rickard complexes acting on triangulated categories.

Special unipotent representations of real classical groups: counting and reduction

Abstract: Let $G$ be a real reductive group in Harish-Chandra's class. We derive some consequences of theory of coherent continuation representations to the counting of irreducible representations of $G$ with a given infinitesimal character and a given bound of the complex associated variety. When $G$ is a real classical group (including the real metaplectic group), we investigate the set of special unipotent representations of $G$ attached to $\check{\mathcal O}$, in the sense of Arthur and Barbasch-Vogan. Here $\check{\mathcal O}$ is a nilpotent adjoint orbit in the Langlands dual of $G$ (or the metaplectic dual of $G$ when $G$ is a real metaplectic group). We give a precise count for the number of special unipotent representations of $G$ attached to $\check{ \mathcal O}$. We also reduce the problem of constructing special unipotent representations attached to $\check{\mathcal O}$ to the case when $\check{\mathcal O}$ is analytically even (equivalently for a real classical group, has good parity in the sense of M{\oe}glin). The paper is the first in a series of two papers on the classification of special unipotent representations of real classical groups.

Abstract:Let G be a finite group. For each integral representation ρ of G we consider ρ-decomposable principally polarized abelian varieties; that is, principally polarized abelian varieties (X, H) with -action, of dimension equal to the degree of ρ, which admit a decomposition of the lattice for X into two G-invariant sublattices isotropic with respect to ℑH, with one of the sublattices ℤG-isomorphic to ρ. We give a construction for ρ-decomposable principally polarized abelian varieties, and show that each of them is isomorphic to a product of elliptic curves. Conversely, if ρ is absolutely irreducible, we show that each ρ-decomposable p.p.a.v. is (isomorphic to) one of those constructed above, thereby characterizing them. In the case of irreducible, reduced root systems, we consider the natural representation of its associated Weyl group, apply the preceding general construction, and characterize completely the associated families of principally polarized abelian varieties, which correspond to modular curves.

Abstract:In the first part, we construct a new isomorphism between the endomorphism algebra of an induced cuspidal character sheaf and the group algebra of the relative Weyl group involved. We show it differs from the isomorphism of Lusztig by a linear character, and we relate this linear character to some stabilizers. Some consequences for characteristic functions of character sheaves are obtained. In the second part, we compute explicitly this linear character whenever the cuspidal local system is supported by the regular unipotent class and, as an application of these methods, we obtain a refinement of Digne, Lehrer and Michel's theorem on Lusztig restriction of Gel'fand-Graev characters.

Abstract:Let E/F be a quadratic extension of non-archimedean local fields of characteristic 0. In this paper, we investigate two approaches which attempt to describe the smooth irreducible representations of GL(n,E) that are distinguished by its subgroup GL(n,F). One relates this class to representations which come as base change lifts from a quasi-split unitary group F, while another deals with a certain symmetry condition. By characterizing the union of images of the base change maps we show that these two approaches are closely related. Using this observation, we are able to prove a statement relating base change and distinction for ladder representations. We then produce a wide family of examples in which the symmetry condition does not impose GL(n,F)-distinction, and thus exhibit the limitations of these two approaches.

Abstract:We show how to attach to any stratum of a reductive group a (small) finite group. We also show that in the simply laced case the set of strata is in bijection with a subset of the set of almost special representations of the Weyl group. Special affine representations for hyperbolic groups

Abstract:In this paper we extend the construction of special representations to Gromov hyperbolic groups which admits complementary series. We prove that these representations have a natural non-trivial reduced cohomology class $[c]$. An analogue of Kuhn-Vershik's formula is established and as a by-product a characterisation of hyperbolic groups that admit complementary series. Investigating dynamical properties of the cohomology class $[c]$ we prove an cocycle equidistribution theorem á la Roblin-Margulis and deduce the irreducibility of the associated affine actions. The irreducibility of the affine actions associated to the canonical class $[c]$ is original even in the case of uniform lattices in $SO(n,1)$, $SU(n,1)$ or $SL_2(\mathbb{Q}_p)$ with $n\ge 1$ and $p$ prime.

Abstract:Abstract Suppose that W is a finite, unitary, reflection group acting on the complex vector space V and X is a subspace of V . Define N to be the setwise stabilizer of X in W , Z to be the pointwise stabilizer, and C = N / Z . Then restriction defines a homomorphism from the algebra of W -invariant polynomial functions on V to the algebra of C -invariant functions on X . In this note we consider the special case when W is a Coxeter group, V is the complexified reflection representation of W , and X is in the lattice of the arrangement of W , and give a simple, combinatorial characterization of when the restriction mapping is surjective in terms of the exponents of W and C . As an application of our result, in the case when W is the Weyl group of a semisimple, complex Lie algebra, we complete a calculation begun by Richardson in 1987 and obtain a simple combinatorial characterization of regular decomposition classes whose closure is a normal variety.

Tits groups of affine Weyl groups

Abstract:Let $G$ be a connected, reductive group over a non-archimedean local field $F$. Let $\breve F$ be the completion of the maximal unramified extension of $F$ contained in a separable closure $F_s$. In this article, we construct a Tits group of the affine Weyl group of $G(F)$ when the derived subgroup of $G_{\breve F}$ does not contain a simple factor of unitary type. If $G$ is a quasi-split ramified odd unitary group, we show that there always exist representatives in $G(F)$ of affine simple reflections that satisfy Coxeter relations (which is weaker than asking for the existence of a Tits group). If $G = U_{2r}, r \geq 3,$ is a quasi-split ramified even unitary group, we show that there don't even exist representatives in $G(F)$ of the affine simple reflections that satisfy Coxeter relations.

Abstract:A type of directed multigraph called a W-digraph is introduced to model the structure of certain representations of Hecke algebras, including those constructed by Lusztig and Vogan from involutions in a Weyl group. Building on results of Lusztig, a complete characterization of W-digraphs is given in terms of subdigraphs for dihedral parabolic subgroups. Graph-theoretic properties of W-digraphs are established including, under certain assumptions, acyclicity. In case the Coxeter system is finite, a bound on the number of vertices of a connected W-digraph is obtained, and a graph-theoretic version of the usual duality operation is obtained.

Abstract:We investigate the class of root systems $R$ obtained by extending an $A_1$-type irreducible root system by a free abelian group $G$. In this context there is a Weyl group $W$ and a group $U$ with the presentation by conjugation. Both groups are reflection groups with respect to a discrete symmetric space $T$ associated to $R$. We show that the natural homomorphism $U\to W$ is an isomorphism if and only if an associated subset $T^{ab}\setminus\{0\}$ of $G_2=G/2G$ is 2-independent, i.e. its image under the map $G_2\to G_2\otimes G_2, g\mapsto g\otimes g$ is linearly independent over the Galois field $F_2$.

Abstract:The notion of a linear Coxeter system introduced by Vinberg generalizes the geometric representation of a Coxeter group. Our main theorem asserts that if $v$ is an element of the Tits cone of a linear Coxeter system and $\cW$ is the corresponding Coxeter group, then $\cW v \subeq v - C_v,$ where $C_v$ is the convex cone generated by the coroots $\check \alpha$, for which $\alpha(v) > 0$. This implies that the convex hull of $\cW v$ is completely determined by the image of $v$ under the reflections in $\cW$. We also apply an analogous result for convex hulls of $\cW$-orbits in the dual space, although this action need not correspond to a linear Coxeter system. Motivated by the applications in representation theory, we further extend these results to Weyl group orbits of locally finite and locally affine root systems. In the locally affine case, we also derive some applications on minimizing linear functionals on Weyl group orbits.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we introduce a notion of ladder representations for split odd special orthogonal groups and symplectic groups over a non-archimedean local field of characteristic zero. This is a natural class in the admissible dual, which contains both strongly positive discrete series representations and irreducible representations with irreducible $A$-parameters. We compute Jacquet modules and the Aubert duals of ladder representations, and we establish a formula for describing ladder representations in terms of linear combinations of standard modules.

Extended Weil representations: the real field case

Abstract:Let F be the usual real field. Let W be a symplectic vector space over F. It is known that there are two different Weil representations of a Meteplectic covering group $\widetilde{Sp}(W)$. By some twisted actions, we reorganize them into a representation of $\widetilde{Sp}^{\pm}(W)$, a covering group over a subgroup $Sp^{\pm}(W)$ of $GSp(W)$. Based on the works of MVW, Kudla, and Howe on reductive dual pairs in $Sp(W)$, we explore the analogous dual pairs in $Sp^{\pm}(W)$ . Finally, following Lion-Vergne's classical book on Weil representations and theta series, we investigate some simple theta series in $Sp^{\pm}(W)$ where $W$ has dimension two.

Abstract:We introduce abacus diagrams that describe minimal length coset representatives in affine Weyl groups of types B, C, and D. These abacus diagrams use a realization of the affine Weyl group of type C due to Eriksson to generalize a construction of James for the symmetric group. We also describe several combinatorial models for these parabolic quotients that generalize classical results in affine type A related to core partitions.

Abstract:We show that if $H \leq G$ is a closed amenable and cocompact subgroup of a unimodular locally compact group, then the reduced group C*-algebra of $G$ is not simple. Equivalently, there are unitary representations of $G$ that are weakly contained in the left-regular representation, but not weakly equivalent to it. We discuss applications of this result and pose the problem to construct non-discrete topologically simple groups with a cocompact amenable closed subgroup but without a Gelfand pair.

A refined Weyl character formula for comodules on $\operatorname{GL}_{2,A}$

Abstract:Let $A$ be any commutative unital ring and let $\operatorname{GL}_{2,A}$ be the general linear group scheme on $A$ of rank $2$. We study the representation theory of $\operatorname{GL}_{2,A}$ and the symmetric powers $\operatorname{Sym}^d(V)$, where $(V, \Delta)$ is the standard right comodule on $\operatorname{GL}_{2,A}$. We prove a refined Weyl character formula for $\operatorname{Sym}^d(V)$. There is for any integer $d \geq 1$ a (canonical) refined weight space decomposition $\operatorname{Sym}^d(V) \cong \oplus_i \operatorname{Sym}^d(V)^i$ where each direct summand $\operatorname{Sym}^d(V)^i$ is a comodule on $N \subseteq \operatorname{GL}_{2,A}$. Here $N$ is the schematic normalizer of the diagonal torus $T \subseteq \operatorname{GL}_{2,A}$. We prove a character formula for the direct summands of $\operatorname{Sym}^d(V)$ for any integer $d \geq 1$. This refined Weyl character formula implies the classical Weyl character formula. As a Corollary we get a refined Weyl character formula for the pull back $\operatorname{Sym}^d(V \otimes K)$ as a comodule on $\operatorname{GL}_{2,K}$ where $K$ is any field. We also calculate explicit examples involving the symmetric powers, symmetric tensors and their duals. The refined weight space decomposition exists in general for group schemes such as $\operatorname{GL}_{2,A}$ and $\operatorname{SL}_{2,A}$. The study may have applications to the study of groups $G$ such as $\operatorname{SL}(n,k)$ and $\operatorname{GL}(n,k)$ and quotients $G/H$ where $k$ is an arbitrary field (or a Dedekind domain) and $H \subseteq G$ is a closed subgroup. The refined weight space decomposition of $S_{\lambda}(V)$ has a relation with irreducible module over a field of positive characteristic. In an example I prove it recovers the irreducible module $V(\lambda) \subsetneq S_{\lambda}(V)$.
