Abstract:This book uses optimal control theory to prove that the most unpackable centrally symmetric convex disk in the plane is a smoothed polygon. A smoothed polygon is a polygon whose corners have been rounded in a special way by arcs of hyperbolas. To be highly unpackable means that even densest packing of that disk has low density.

Abstract:AbstractSmoothing of polyhedron with arbitrary topology is an important issue in CAGD and CAD/CAM, but so far it is deemed to be difficult to smooth the complex corners of a polyhedron. In this paper, the concept of distance surfaces of a surface and a solid is introduced, and the incisive properties of such surfaces are addressed which provide a theoretical foundation for modifying a general corner. The method is based on making constricted volume and the maximum distance the volume can be constricted is given too. It is shown that by the proposed method in this paper any polyhedron can be G1 smoothed with quadraic and, sometimes toroidal surfaces. The new approach is suitable for engineering design and NC machining. The associated algorithm based on the classification theorem of corners is simple, fast and robust.

Abstract:Packing soft convex polygonal objects in an optimized convex container is considered. The shape of the soft object can be changed in certain limits, but the object remains convex and maintains its area unchanged under all shape transformations. Non-overlapping, containment, as well as convexity and area conservation constraints are presented. A nonlinear programming model is formulated to find the optimal container for fixed values of elasticity parameters. An inverse problem is considered to find the minimal value of the elasticity parameter resulting in the same optimal container. Numerical experiments for packing soft triangles and pentagons in optimized circular and square containers are provided.

Abstract:A nonstandard optimized packing convex polygons in a rectangular container is considered. The shapes of the polygons are not fixed: the polygons can be compressed/stretched in certain limits along the principal axes, but their areas remain constant. The polygons must be placed completely in the container without overlapping under free translations and rotations. The objective is to define the shapes of the polygons and their locations to minimize the height of the container. Non-overlapping and containment conditions for the stretched polygons are presented using the phi-function technique. The overall packing problem is formulated in the form of a nonconvex nonlinear programming problem. A solution approach is proposed based on the multistart strategy. To illustrate the main steps of the solution technique a numerical example is provided. Directions for future research are discussed. Our interest in this class of packing problems is motivated by studying properties of porous media under external force. Elements of porous media can be deformed under pressure, but the mass of each particle is conserved. In two-dimensional case this corresponds to the area conservation.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel algorithm for optimal packing problem by combining ant colony algorithm with BLF (bottom-left-fill) heuristic approach. The proposed algorithm not only automatically looks for the best sequence of the polygons and each polygon's optimum rotation by ant colony algorithm but also implements the exact layout with the BLF heuristic algorithm. Moreover, the algorithm supports the parallel computation and facilitates quick convergence to the optimal solution. The experimental results show the effectiveness of our algorithm comparing with the other methods.

Abstract:Arbitrary polygonal meshes play an important role in 3D model representation and surface modeling. Most of the previous smoothing approaches are however, mainly designed for triangular meshes. This paper proposes a unified approach to address fairing problems of arbitrary polygonal meshes. The approach is built upon an assumption that all face centroids of a smoothed mesh locate on its noise-free surface and remain unchanged during the smoothing process in order to prevent the resulted mesh from shrinkage and preserve surface features. Boundary smoothing is considered in a similar way as well but the process is independent to mesh processing such that two, noisy meshes sharing a boundary still adjoin continuously after smoothing. Finally, a Taubin-like inflation operator is employed to further improve the ability of anti-shrinkage. Although very simple iterative equation is employed in the smoothing procedure, experiments demonstrate that the approach is able to not only effectively address the problem of shrinkage and distortion but also preserve features very well.

Abstract:It is often of interest to identify a given number of points in projective space such that the minimum distance between any two points is as large as possible. Such configurations yield representations of data that are optimally robust to noise and erasures. The minimum distance of an optimal configuration not only depends on the number of points and the dimension of the projective space, but also on whether the space is real or complex. For decades, Neil Sloane's online Table of Grassmannian Packings has been the go-to resource for putatively or provably optimal packings of points in real projective spaces. Using a variety of numerical algorithms, we have created a similar table for complex projective spaces. This paper surveys the relevant literature, explains some of the methods used to generate the table, presents some new putatively optimal packings, and invites the reader to competitively contribute improvements to this table.

Abstract:We study the two-dimensional geometric knapsack problem for convex polygons. Given a set of weighted convex polygons and a square knapsack, the goal is to select the most profitable subset of the given polygons that fits non-overlappingly into the knapsack. We allow to rotate the polygons by arbitrary angles. We present a quasi-polynomial time O (1)-approximation algorithm for the general case and a pseudopolynomial time O (1)-approximation algorithm if all input polygons are triangles, both assuming polynomially bounded integral input data. Also, we give a quasi-polynomial time algorithm that computes a solution of optimal weight under resource augmentation, i.e., we allow to increase the size of the knapsack by a factor of 1 + δ for some δ > 0 but compare ourselves with the optimal solution for the original knapsack. To the best of our knowledge, these are the first results for two-dimensional geometric knapsack in which the input objects are more general than axis-parallel rectangles or circles and in which the input polygons can be rotated by arbitrary angles.

Abstract:Exploiting the relationship between 4-dimensional toric and semitoric integrable systems with Delzant and semitoric polygons, respectively, we develop techniques to compute certain equivariant packing densities and equivariant capacities of these systems by working exclusively with the polygons. This expands on results of Pelayo and Pelayo-Schmidt. We compute the densities of several important examples and we also use our techniques to solve the equivariant semitoric perfect packing problem, i.e., we list all semitoric polygons for which the associated semitoric system admits an equivariant packing which fills all but a set of measure zero of the manifold. This paper also serves as a concise and accessible introduction to Delzant and semitoric polygons in dimension four.

Modifying and Controlling of Smooth Closed Surfaces

Abstract:An efficient algorithm is presented for modeling closed surfaces with bicubic Bezier patches. Starting from a control polyhedron with four-sided faces (not necessary planar), the algorithm fits the faces of the polyhedron with bicubic Bezier patches which are globally G1 connected. Methods for controlling and modifying the smooth closed surfaces are provided by adjusting certain weight factors. The proposed method is capable of dealing with control meshes of arbitrary topology and offers a simple and convenient way for modifying the shape of smooth closed surfaces locally and interactively. Experimental results demonstrate the potential of our method.

Abstract:Polygonal models have been widely applied in the community of CAD and computer graphics. Since a polygonal surface usually has no intrinsic parameterization, it is very difficult to map textures onto it with low distortion. In this paper, we present an efficient texture mapping algorithm for polygonal models. For each region to be mapped, the algorithm first constructs a B-spline patch with similar shape to surround the model. The mapped region is then projected onto the constructed B-spline patch to achieve a parameterization. By interactively controlling the B-spline patch, the user can conveniently decorate the surface of the model to meet his requirements. Both local and global texture mapping are discussed. The experimental results demonstrate that the algorithm has a great of potential applications in computer animation and virtual reality systems.

Abstract:We show that packing axis-aligned unit squares into a simple polygon $P$ is NP-hard, even when $P$ is an orthogonal and orthogonally convex polygon with half-integer coordinates. It has been known since the early 80s that packing unit squares into a polygon with holes is NP-hard~[Fowler, Paterson, Tanimoto, Inf. Process. Lett., 1981], but the version without holes was conjectured to be polynomial-time solvable more than two decades ago~[Baur and Fekete, Algorithmica, 2001].

Abstract:Traditional problems in computational geometry involve aspects that are both discrete and continuous. One such example is nearest-neighbor searching, where the input is discrete, but the result depends on distances, which vary continuously. In many real-world applications of geometric data structures, it is assumed that query results are continuous, free of jump discontinuities. This is at odds with many modern data structures in computational geometry, which employ approximations to achieve efficiency, but these approximations often suffer from discontinuities. In this paper, we present a general method for transforming an approximate but discontinuous data structure into one that produces a smooth approximation, while matching the asymptotic space efficiencies of the original. We achieve this by adapting an approach called the partition-of-unity method, which smoothly blends multiple local approximations into a single smooth global approximation. We illustrate the use of this technique in a specific application of approximating the distance to the boundary of a convex polytope in $\mathbb{R}^d$ from any point in its interior. We begin by developing a novel data structure that efficiently computes an absolute $\varepsilon$-approximation to this query in time $O(\log (1/\varepsilon))$ using $O(1/\varepsilon^{d/2})$ storage space. Then, we proceed to apply the proposed partition-of-unity blending to guarantee the smoothness of the approximate distance field, establishing optimal asymptotic bounds on the norms of its gradient and Hessian.

Shadoks Approach to Knapsack Polygonal Packing

Abstract:We describe the heuristics used by the Shadoks team in the CG:SHOP 2024 Challenge. Each instance consists of a convex polygon called container and a multiset of items, where each item is a simple polygon and has an associated value. The goal is to pack some of the items inside the container using translations, in order to maximize the sum of their values. Our strategy consists of obtaining good initial solutions and improving them with local search. To obtain the initial solutions we used integer programming and a carefully designed greedy approach.

Abstract:In this paper an optimized multidimensional hyperspheres packing problem (HPP) is considered for a bounded container. Additional constraints, such as prohibited zones in the container or minimal allowable distances between spheres can also be taken into account. Containers bounded by hyper- (spheres, cylinders, planes) are considered. Placement constraints (non-intersection, containment and distant conditions) are formulated using the phi-function technique. A mathematical model of HPP is constructed and analyzed. In terms of the general typology for cutting & packing problems, two classes of HPP are considered: open dimension problem (ODP) and knapsack problem (KP). Various solution strategies for HPP are considered depending on: a) objective function type, b) problem dimension, c) metric characteristics of hyperspheres (congruence, radii distribution and values), d) container's shape; e) prohibited zones in the container and/or minimal allowable distances. A solution approach is proposed based on multistart strategies, nonlinear programming techniques, greedy and branch-and-bound algorithms, statistical optimization and homothetic transformations, as well as decomposition techniques. A general methodology to solve HPP is suggested. Computational results for benchmark and new instances are presented.

Abstract:In 1900, as a part of his 18th problem, Hilbert proposed the question to determine the densest congruent (or translative) packings of a given solid, such as the unit ball or the regular tetrahedron of unit edges. Up to now, our knowledge about this problem is still very limited, excepting the ball case. It is conjectured that, for some particular solids such as tetrahedra, cuboctahedra, and octahedra, their maximal translative packing densities and their maximal lattice packing densities are identical. To attack this conjecture, this article suggests a computer approach to determine the maximal local translative packing density of a given polytope, by studying associated color graphs and applying optimization. In particular, all the tetrahedral case, the cuboctahedral case and the octahedral case of the conjecture have been reduced into finite numbers of manageable optimization problems.

Abstract:The traditional vertex packing problem defined on an undirected graph identifies the largest weighted independent set of nodes, that is, a set of nodes whose induced subgraph contains no edges. In this paper, we examine a generalized vertex packing problem (GVP-k) in which k ``violations'' to the independent set restriction are permitted, whereby k edges may exist within the subgraph induced by the chosen set of nodes. A particular context in which such problems arise is in the national airspace planning model of Sherali, Smith, and Trani (2000), where a set of flight-plans need to be composed for various flights subject to conflict, workload, and equity considerations. The GVP-k structure arises in modeling the air-traffic control sector workload restrictions, which stipulate that for each sector and during each discretized time-slot, the number of aircraft conflicts that would need to be resolved should not exceed k, for some k≥1. We derive several classes of facetial valid inequalities for GVP-k for certain specially structured subgraphs, identifying polynomial-sized convex hull representations for some of these cases. Related constraint generation routines are also developed, and some computational results are provided to demonstrate the efficacy of utilizing the proposed valid inequalities in solving GVP-k for different values of k.

Maximally dense packings of two-dimensional convex and concave noncircular particles

Abstract:Dense packings of hard particles have important applications in many fields, including condensed matter physics, discrete geometry and cell biology. In this paper, we employ a stochastic search implementation of the Torquato-Jiao Adaptive-Shrinking-Cell optimization scheme [Nature 460, 876 (2009)] to find maximally dense particle packings in d-dimensional Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^d$. While the original implementation was designed to study spheres and convex polyhedra in $d\ge3$, our implementation focuses on $d=2$ and extends the algorithm to include both concave polygons and certain convex or concave non-polygonal particle shapes. We verify the robustness of this packing protocol by successfully reproducing the known putative optimal packings of congruent copies of regular pentagons and octagons, then employ it to suggest dense packing arrangements of congruent copies of certain families of concave crosses, convex and concave curved triangles (incorporating shapes resembling the Mercedes-Benz logo), and "moon-like" shapes. Analytical constructions are determined subsequently to obtain the densest known packings of these particle shapes. For the examples considered, we find that the densest packings of both convex and concave particles with central symmetry are achieved by their corresponding optimal Bravais lattice packings; for particles lacking central symmetry, the densest packings obtained are non-lattice periodic packings, which are consistent with recently-proposed general organizing principles for hard particles. Moreover, we find that the densest known packings of certain curved triangles are periodic with a four-particle basis, and we find that the densest known periodic packings of certain moon-like shapes possess no inherent symmetries. Our work adds to the growing evidence that particle shape can be used as a tuning parameter to achieve a diversity of packing structures.

Abstract:Abstract Discrete Laplacians are the basis for various tasks in geometry processing. While the most desirable properties of the discretization invariably lead to the so‐called cotangent Laplacian for triangle meshes, applying the same principles to polygon Laplacians leaves degrees of freedom in their construction. From linear finite elements it is well‐known how the shape of triangles affects both the error and the operator's condition. We notice that shape quality can be encapsulated as the trace of the Laplacian and suggest that trace minimization is a helpful tool to improve numerical behavior. We apply this observation to the polygon Laplacian constructed from a virtual triangulation [BHKB20] to derive optimal parameters per polygon. Moreover, we devise a smoothing approach for the vertices of a polygon mesh to minimize the trace. We analyze the properties of the optimized discrete operators and show their superiority over generic parameter selection in theory and through various experiments.
