Abstract:Assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis for the zeros of the Dirichlet $L$-functions with characters modulo $q$, we obtain a smoothed version of the average number of Goldbach representations for numbers which are multiples of a positive integer $q$. Such an average was first considered by Granville \cite{Gran07,Gran08} but without any smoothing factor. In this short article, we also show how the smoothing can be removed.

Abstract:We study an asymptotic formula for average orders of Goldbach representations of an integer as the sum of k primes. We extend the existing result for k=2 to a general k, for which we obtain a better error term. Moreover, we prove an equivalence between the Riemann Hypothesis and a good average order in this case.

Abstract:A new generalisation of Goldbach's conjecture (GGC) - also generalising that of Lemoine - is tested, introduced by the first author. It states that for every pair of positive integers $m_1, m_2$, every sufficiently large integer $n$ satisfying certain simple criteria can be expressed as $n=m_1p+m_2q$ for some primes $p$ and $q$. GGC is checked up to $10^{12}d$ for all (up to $10^{13}d$ for some) pairs of coefficients $m_1, m_2$, where $d=\gcd{(m_1, m_2)}$ and $m_1/d, m_2/d \leq 40$. The largest counterexamples found that cannot be obtained in this form are presented. Their relatively small sizes support the plausibility of GGC. Lemoine's conjecture is verified up to a new record of $10^{13}$. Four naturally arising verifying algorithms are described and their running times compared for every $m_1\leq m_2\leq 40$ relatively prime. These seek to find either the $p$- or the $q$-minimal $(m_1, m_2)$-partitions of all numbers tested, by either descending or ascending search for the prime to be maximised or minimised, respectively, in the partitions. For all $m_1, m_2$ descending searches were faster than ascending ones. A heuristic explanation is provided. The relative speed of ascending [descending] searches for the $p$- and for the $q$-minimal partitions, respectively, varied by $m_1, m_2$. Using the average of $p^*_{m_1, m_2}(n)$ - the minimal $p$ in all $(m_1, m_2)$-partitions of $n$ - up to a sufficiently large threshold, two functions of $m_1, m_2$ are introduced, which may help predict these rankings. Our predictions correspond well with actual rankings. These could be further improved by developing approximations to $p^*_{m_1, m_2}(n)$. Numerical data are presented, including average and maximum values of $p^*_{m_1, m_2}(n)$ up to $10^9$. An extension of GGC is proposed, generalising the Twin prime conjecture and the assertion that there are infinitely many Sophie Germain primes.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove an unconditional form of Fujii's formula for the average number of Goldbach representations and show that the error in this formula is determined by a general zero-free region of the Riemann zeta-function, and vice versa. In particular, we describe the error in the unconditional formula in terms of the remainder in the Prime Number Theorem which connects the error to zero-free regions of the Riemann zeta-function.

Abstract:An approximate formula for the partitions of Goldbach's Conjecture is derived using Prime Number Theorem and a heuristic probabilistic approach. A strong form of Goldbach's conjecture follows in the form of a lower bounding function for the partitions of Goldbach's conjecture. Numerical computations suggest that the lower and upper bounding functions for the partitions satisfy a simple functional equation. Assuming that this invariant scaling property holds for all even integer $n$, the lower and upper bounds can be expressed as simple exponentials.

Primes in arithmetic progressions to large moduli, and Goldbach beyond the square-root barrier

Abstract:We show the primes have level of distribution $66/107\approx 0.617$ using triply well-factorable weights. This gives the highest level of distribution for primes in any setting, improving on the prior record level $3/5=0.60$ of Maynard. We also extend this level to $5/8=0.625$, assuming Selberg's eigenvalue conjecture. As applications of the method, we obtain new upper bounds for twin primes and for Goldbach representations of even numbers $a$. For the Goldbach problem, this is the first use of a level of distribution beyond the square-root barrier, and leads to the greatest improvement on the problem since Bombieri-Davenport from 1966. Our proof optimizes the Deshouillers-Iwaniec spectral large sieve estimates, both in the exceptional spectrum and uniformity in the residue $a$, refining Drappeau-Pratt-Radziwill and Assing-Blomer-Li.

An Algebraic Approach to the Goldbach and Polignac Conjectures

Abstract:This paper will give both the necessary and sufficient conditions required to find a counter-example to the Goldbach Conjecture by using an algebraic approach where no knowledge of the gaps between prime numbers is needed. To eliminate ambiguity the set of natural numbers, $\mathbb{N}$, will include zero throughout this paper. It will be shown there exists a counter-example to the Goldbach Conjecture, given by $2a$ where $a \in \mathbb{N}_{> 3}$, if and only if for each prime $p_i < a$ there exists some unique $q_i, \alpha_i \in \mathbb{N}$ where $a < q_i < 2a$ and $2a = q_i + p_i$ along with the condition that $\prod_{i = 1}^{\pi(a)}q_i = \prod_{i = 1}^{\pi(a)}p_i^{\alpha_i}$. A substitution of $q_i = 2a - p_i$ for each $q_i$ from each sum gives the product relationship $\prod_{i = 1}^{\pi(a)}(2a - p_i) = \prod_{i = 1}^{\pi(a)}p_i^{\alpha_i}$. Therefore, if a counter-example exists to the Goldbach Conjecture, then there exists a mapping $\mathcal{G}_-:\mathbb{C} \to \mathbb{C}$ where $$\mathcal{G}_-(z) = \prod_{i = 1}^{\pi(a)}(z - p_i) - \prod_{i = 1}^{\pi(a)}p_i^{\alpha_i}$$ and $\mathcal{G}_-(2a) = 0$. A proof of the Goldbach Conjecture will be given utilizing Hensel's Lemma to show $2a$ must be of the form $2a = p_i^{\alpha_i} + p_i$ for all primes up to $a$ when $a > 3$. However, this leads to contradiction since $2a < a\#$ for all $a > 4$. A similar method will be employed to give the necessary and sufficient conditions when an even number is not the difference of two primes with one prime being less than that even number. These proofs will have implications for proving the Polignac Conjecture.

Abstract:For any positive integer $q\geq 2$ and any real number $\delta\in(0,1)$, let $\alpha_q(n,\delta n)$ denote the maximum size of a subset of $\mathbb{Z}_q^n$ with minimum Hamming distance at least $\delta n$, where $\mathbb{Z}_q=\{0,1,\dotsc,q-1\}$ and $n\in\mathbb{N}$. The asymptotic rate function is defined by $ R_q(\delta) = \limsup_{n\rightarrow\infty}\frac{1}{n}\log_q\alpha_q(n,\delta n).$ The famous $q$-ary asymptotic Gilbert-Varshamov bound, obtained in the 1950s, states that \[ R_q(\delta) \geq 1 - \delta\log_q(q-1)-\delta\log_q\frac{1}{\delta}-(1-\delta)\log_q\frac{1}{1-\delta} \stackrel{\mathrm{def}}{=}R_\mathrm{GV}(\delta,q) \] for all positive integers $q\geq 2$ and $0<\delta<1-q^{-1}$. In the case that $q$ is an even power of a prime with $q\geq 49$, the $q$-ary Gilbert-Varshamov bound was firstly improved by using algebraic geometry codes in the works of Tsfasman, Vladut, and Zink and of Ihara in the 1980s. These algebraic geometry codes have been modified to improve the $q$-ary Gilbert-Varshamov bound $R_\mathrm{GV}(\delta,q)$ at a specific tangent point $\delta=\delta_0\in (0,1)$ of the curve $R_\mathrm{GV}(\delta,q)$ for each given integer $q\geq 46$. However, the $q$-ary Gilbert-Varshamov bound $R_\mathrm{GV}(\delta,q)$ at $\delta=1/2$, i.e., $R_\mathrm{GV}(1/2,q)$, remains the largest known lower bound of $R_q(1/2)$ for infinitely many positive integers $q$ which is a generic prime and which is a generic non-prime-power integer. In this paper, by using codes from geometry of numbers introduced by Lenstra in the 1980s, we prove that the $q$-ary Gilbert-Varshamov bound $R_\mathrm{GV}(\delta,q)$ with $\delta\in(0,1)$ can be improved for all but finitely many positive integers $q$. It is shown that the growth defined by $\eta(\delta)= \liminf_{q\rightarrow\infty}\frac{1}{\log q}\log[1-\delta-R_q(\delta)]^{-1}$ for every $\delta\in(0,1)$ has actually a nontrivial lower bound.

Abstract:The Generalized Riemann Hypothesis implies that at least 50% of the central values $L \left( \frac{1}{2},\chi\right)$ are non-vanishing as $\chi$ ranges over primitive characters modulo $q$. We show that one may unconditionally go beyond GRH, in the sense that if one averages over primitive characters modulo $q$ and averages $q$ over an interval, then at least 50.073% of the central values are non-vanishing. The proof utilizes the mollification method with a three-piece mollifier, and relies on estimates for sums of Kloosterman sums due to Deshouillers and Iwaniec. Note: The author has been made aware of an error in this work. It seems the error can be fixed, by using a different argument, and the author will present a correction in due course.

Abstract:Several years ago, Long and Ramakrishna [Adv. Math. 290 (2016), 773--808] extended Van Hamme's (H.2) supercongruence to the modulus $p^3$ case. Recently, Guo [Int. J. Number Theory, to appear] found a $q$-analogue of the Long--Ramakrishna formula for $p\equiv 3\pmod 4$. In this note, a $q$-analogue of the Long--Ramakrishna formula for $p\equiv 1\pmod 4$ is derived through the $q$-Whipple formulas and the Chinese remainder theorem for coprime polynomials.

Abstract:We consider q-binomial coefficients built from the q-rational and q-real numbers defined by Morier-Genoud and Ovsienko in terms of continued fractions. We establish versions of both the q-Pascal identity and the q-binomial theorem in this setting. These results are then used to find more identities satisfied by the q-analogues of Morier-Genoud and Ovsienko, including a Chu–Vandermonde identity and q-Gamma function identities.

Abstract:Recently, Morier-Genoud and Ovsienko introduced a $q$-analog of rational numbers. More precisely, for an irreducible fraction $\frac{r}s>0$, they constructed coprime polynomials ${\mathcal R}_{\frac{r}s}(q), {\mathcal S}_{\frac{r}s}(q) \in {\mathbb Z}[q]$ with ${\mathcal R}_{\frac{r}s}(1)=r, {\mathcal S}_{\frac{r}s}(1)=s$. Their theory has a rich background and many applications. By definition, if $r \equiv r' \pmod{s}$, then ${\mathcal S}_{\frac{r}s}(q)={\mathcal S}_{\frac{r'}s}(q)$. We show that $rr'=-1 \pmod{s}$ implies ${\mathcal S}_{\frac{r}s}(q)={\mathcal S}_{\frac{r'}s}(q)$, and it is conjectured that the converse holds if $s$ is prime (and $r \not \equiv r' \pmod{s}$). We also show that $s$ is a multiple of 3 (resp. 4) if and only if ${\mathcal S}_{\frac{r}s}(\zeta)=0$ for $\zeta=(-1+\sqrt{-3})/2$ (resp. $\zeta=i$). We give applications to the representation theory of quivers of type $A$ and the Jones polynomials of rational links.

We find an explicit period νm(q) such that for any integers n>0 and r we have[n+νm(q)r]m(a)≡[nr]m(a)(modq) whenever a is an integer with gcd(1−(−a)m,q)=1, or a≡−1(modq), or a≡1(modq) and 2|m, where [nr]m(a)=∑k≡r(modm)(nk)ak. This is a further extension of a congruence of Glaisher.

Abstract:In order to study the analytic properties of the Goldbach generating function we consider a smooth version, similar to the Chebyshev function for the Prime Number Theorem. In this paper we obtain explicit numerical estimates for the average order of its summatory function both in the classical case and in arithmetic progressions. These support the existing asymptotic results, under the (Generalised) Riemann Hypothesis, involving error terms.

Abstract:For a primitive Dirichlet character $\chi\pmod q$ we let \[M(\chi):= \frac{1}{\sqrt{q}}\max_{1\leq t \leq q} \Big|\sum_{n \leq t} \chi(n) \Big|.\] In this paper, we investigate the distribution of $M(\chi)$, as $\chi$ ranges over primitive cubic characters $\chi\pmod q$ with $(q,3)=1$ and $q\leq Q$. Our first result gives an estimate for the proportion of such characters for which $M(\chi)>V$, in a uniform range of $V$, which is best possible under the assumption of the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis. In particular, we show that the distribution of large cubic character sums behaves very differently from those in the family of non-principal characters modulo a large prime, and the family of quadratic characters. We also investigate the location of the number $N_{\chi}$ where the maximum of $|\sum_{n\leq N} \chi(n)|$ is attained, and show the surprising result that for almost all primitive cubic characters $\chi\pmod q$ with $M(\chi)>V$, $N_{\chi}/q$ is very close to a reduced fraction with a large denominator of size $(\log V)^{1/2+o(1)}$. This contradicts the common belief that for an even character $\chi$, $N_{\chi}/q$ is located near a rational of small denominator and gives a striking difference with the case of even characters in the other two families mentioned above, for which $N_{\chi}/q\approx 1/3$ or $2/3$ for almost all even $\chi$. Furthermore, in the case of cubic characters, the works of Granville-Soundararajan, Goldmakher, and Lamzouri-Mangerel show that if $M(\chi)$ is large, then $\chi$ pretends to be $\xi(n)n^{it}$ for some small $t$, where $\xi$ is an odd character of small conductor $m$. We show that for almost all such characters, we have $M(\chi)=m^{-1/2+o(1)}\big|L(1+it, \chi\overline{\xi})\big|.$
