Abstract:Let be a field and be a finite sequence of elements of . In an earlier paper [G. H. Norton, 'On the annihilator ideal of an inverse form', J. Appl. Algebra Engrg. Comm. Comput.28 (2017), 31–78], we used the submodule of Macaulay's inverse system (where z is our homogenising variable) to construct generating forms for the (homogeneous) annihilator ideal of . We also gave an algorithm to compute a special pair of generating forms of such an annihilator ideal. Here we apply this approach to the sequence r of the title. We obtain special forms generating the annihilator ideal for without polynomial multiplication or division, so that the algorithm becomes linear. In particular, we obtain its linear complexities. We also give additional applications of this approach.

Abstract:The goal of this article is to study some basic algebraic and combinatorial properties of "generalized $n$-series" over a commutative ring $R$, which are functions $s: \mathbf{Z}_{\geq 0} \to R$ satisfying a mild condition. A special example of generalized $n$-series is given by the $q$-integers $\frac{q^n-1}{q-1} \in \mathbf{Z}[\![q-1]\!]$. Given a generalized $n$-series $s$, one can define $s$-analogues of factorials (via $n!_s = \prod_{i=1}^n s(n)$) and binomial coefficients. We prove that Pascal's identity, the binomial identity, Lucas' theorem, and the Vandermonde identity admit $s$-analogues; each of these specialize to their appropriate $q$-analogue in the case of the $q$-integer generalized $n$-series. We also study the growth rates of generalized $n$-series defined over the integers. Finally, we define an $s$-analogue of the ($q$-)derivative, and prove $s$-analogues of the Poincaré lemma and the Cartier isomorphism for the affine line, as well as a pullback square due to Bhatt-Lurie.

Abstract:We prove that there is a one to one correspondence between the following three sets: idempotent functions on a set of size $n$, complete exceptional sequences of linear radical square zero Nakayama algebras of rank $n$ and rooted labeled forests with $n$ nodes and height of at most one. Therefore, the number of exceptional sequences is given by the sum $\sum\limits^n_{j=1}\binom{n}{j}j^{n-j}$.

Abstract:Ron Graham's Sequence is a surprising bijection from non-negative integers to non-negative, non-prime integers that was introduced by Ron Graham in the June 1986 "Problems" column of $\textit{Mathematics Magazine}$, and which later appeared in Problem A2 of the 2013 William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition. We describe some properties of this function, give an algorithm for computing its values in pseudo-polynomial time, and prove a 22 year-old conjecture about an upper bound for the function.

A Polynomial Ring Connecting Central Binomial Coefficients and Gould's Sequence

Abstract:We establish a novel connection between the central binomial coefficients $\binom{2n}{n}$ and Gould's sequence through the construction of a specialized multivariate polynomial quotient ring. Our ring structure is characterized by ideals generated from elements defined by polynomial recurrence relations, and we prove the conditions under which the set of polynomial generators forms a Gröbner basis. By exploring a specific variation of our ring structure, we demonstrate that expanding and evaluating polynomials within the ring yields both the central binomial coefficients and Gould's sequence. Additionally, we present a method for calculating the binomial transforms of these sequences using our ring's unique properties. This work provides new insights into the connections between two fundamental combinatorial sequences and introduces a new tool for integer sequence analysis, with potential applications in number theory and algebraic combinatorics.

Abstract:The physics of nuclear reactions in stellar plasma is reviewed with special emphasis on the importance of the velocity distribution of ions. Then the properties (density and temperature) of the weak-coupled solar plasma are analysed, showing that the ion velocities should deviate from the Maxwellian distribution and could be better described by a weakly-nonexstensive (|q-1|<0.02) Tsallis' distribution. We discuss concrete physical frameworks for calculating this deviation: the introduction of higher-order corrections to the diffusion and friction coefficients in the Fokker-Plank equation, the influence of the electric-microfield stochastic distribution on the particle dynamics, a velocity correlation function with long-time memory arising from the coupling of the collective and individual degrees of freedom. Finally, we study the effects of such deviations on stellar nuclear rates, on the solar neutrino fluxes, and on the pp neutrino energy spectrum, and analyse the consequences for the solar neutrino problem.

Abstract:A composition of a positive integer n is a k-tuple (λ1, λ2, …, λk) ∈ ℤk>0 such that n = λ1 + λ2 + … + λk. Our goal is to enumerate those compositions whose parts λ1, λ2, …, λk avoid a fixed arithmetic sequence. When this sequence is given by the even integers (i.e., all parts of the compositions must be odd), it is well known that the number of compositions is given by the Fibonacci sequence. A much more recent theorem says that when the parts are required to avoid all multiples of a given integer k, the resulting compositions are counted by a sequence given by a Fibonacci-type recursion of depth k. We extend this result to arbitrary arithmetic sequences. Our main tool is a lemma on generating functions that is no secret among experts but deserves to be more widely known.
On a mod $3$ property of $\ell $-tuples of pairwise commuting permutations

Abstract:Let $S_n$ denote the symmetric group of permutations acting on $n$ elements. We investigate the double sequence $\{N_{\ell}(n)\}$ counting the number of $\ell$ tuples of elements of the symmetric group $S_n$, where the components commute, normalized by the order of $S_n$. Our focus lies on exploring log-concavity with respect to $n$: $$ N_{\ell}(n)^2 - N_{\ell}(n-1) \,\, N_{\ell}(n+1) \geq 0.$$ We establish that this depends on $n \pmod{3}$ for sufficiently large $\ell$. These numbers are studied by Bryan and Fulman as the $n$th orbifold characteristics, generalizing work of Macdonald and Hirzebruch--Hofer concerning the ordinary and string-theoretic Euler characteristics of symmetric products. Notably, $N_2(n)$ represents the partition numbers $p(n)$, while $N_{3}(n)$ represents the number of non-equivalent $n$-sheeted coverings of a torus studied by Liskovets and Medynkh. The numbers also appear in algebra since $ \vert S_n \vert \,\, N_{\ell}(n) = \left\vert Hom \left( \mathbb{Z}^{\ell},S_n\right) \right\vert $.

On some combinatorial sequences associated to invariant theory

Abstract:We study the enumerative and analytic properties of some sequences constructed using tensor invariant theory. The octant sequences are constructed from the exceptional Lie group $G_2$ and the quadrant sequences from the special linear group $SL(3)$. In each case we show that the corresponding sequences are related by binomial transforms. The first three octant sequences and the first four quadrant sequences are listed in the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS). These sequences all have interpretations as enumerating two-dimensional lattice walks but for the octant sequences the boundary conditions are unconventional. These sequences are all P-recursive and we give the corresponding recurrence relations. In all cases the associated differential operators are of third order and have the remarkable property that they can be solved to give closed formulae for the ordinary generating functions in terms of classical Gaussian hypergeometric functions. Moreover, we show that the octant sequences and the quadrant sequences are related by the branching rules for the inclusion of $SL(3)$ in $G_2$.

In this survey, we investigate the symbolic powers of P . We first show that for each i > 1 the equality P(i)=Pi holds if and only if either n = 2 and a even or n=3,i=2 and a≡2 (mod3) . The finitely generated property of the symbolic Rees algebra RS(P) are also explored.

Abstract:We introduce hypergeometric-type sequences. They are linear combinations of interlaced hypergeometric sequences (of arbitrary interlacements). We prove that they form a subring of the ring of holonomic sequences. An interesting family of sequences in this class are those defined by trigonometric functions with linear arguments in the index and $\pi$, such as Chebyshev polynomials, $\left(\sin^2\left(n\,\pi/4\right)\cdot\cos\left(n\,\pi/6\right)\right)_n$, and compositions like $\left(\sin\left(\cos(n\pi/3)\pi\right)\right)_n$.

Higher Specht bases for generalizations of the coinvariant ring

Abstract:The classical coinvariant ring $R_n$ is defined as the quotient of a polynomial ring in $n$ variables by the positive-degree $S_n$-invariants. It has a known basis that respects the decomposition of $R_n$ into irreducible $S_n$-modules, consisting of the higher specht polynomials due to Ariki, Terasoma, and Yamada. We provide an extension of the higher Specht basis to the generalized coinvariant rings $R_{n,k}$. We also give a conjectured higher Specht basis for the Garsia-Procesi modules $R_\mu$, and provide a proof of the conjecture in the case of two-row partition shapes $\mu$. We then combine these results to give a higher Specht basis for an infinite subfamily of the modules $R_{n,k,\mu}$ recently defined by Griffin, which are a common generalization of $R_{n,k}$ and $R_{\mu}$.

Abstract:Let $(A,\mathfrak{m})$ be an analytically un-ramified Noetherian local ring of dimension $d \geq 1$, $I$ a regular $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideal of $A$ and let $\overline{I}$ be integral closure ideal of $I$. If $A$ is of characteristic $p > 0$ then let $I^*$ denote the tight closure of $I$. Let $G_I(A)=\bigoplus_{n\geq 0}I^n/I^{n+1}$ be the associated graded ring of $A$ with respect to $I$. Assume $G_I(A)$ is unmixed and equi-dimensional. We show that either the function $P_{\overline{I}} :\,n\mapsto \lambda(\overline{I^n}/I^n)$ is a polynomial type of degree $d-1$ or $\overline{I^n}=I^n$ for all $n\geq 1.$ We prove an analogus result for the tight closure filtration if $A$ is of characteristic $p > 0$. When $A$ is generalized Cohen-Macaulay and $I$ is generated by standard system of parameters we give bounds for the first Hilbert coefficients of the integral closure filtration of $I$ and the tight closure filtration of $I$.

Abstract:Linear second order recursive sequences with arbitrary initial conditions are studied. For sequences with the same parameters a ring and a group is attached, and isomorphisms and homomorphisms are established for related parameters. In the group, called the {\it sequence group}, sequences are identified if they differ by a scalar factor, but not if they differ by a shift, which is the case for the Laxton group. Prime divisors of sequences are studied with the help of the sequence group $\mod p$, which is always cyclic of order $p\pm 1$. Even and odd numbered subsequences are given independent status through the introduction of one rational parameter in place of two integer parameters. This step brings significant simplifications in the algebra. All elements of finite order in Laxton groups and sequence groups are described effectively. A necessary condition is established for a prime $p$ to be a divisor of a sequence: {\it the norm (determinant) of the respective element of the ring must be a quadratic residue $\mod p$}. This leads to an uppers estimate of the set of divisors by a set of prime density $1/2$. Numerical experiments show that the actual density is typically close to $0.35$. A conjecture is formulated that the sets of prime divisors of the even and odd numbered elements are independent for a large family of parameters.

GL-algebras in positive characteristic II: the polynomial ring

Abstract:We study GL-equivariant modules over the infinite variable polynomial ring $S = k[x_1, x_2, ..., x_n, ...]$ with $k$ an infinite field of characteristic $p > 0$. We extend many of Sam--Snowden's far-reaching results from characteristic zero to this setting. For example, while the Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity of a finitely generated GL-equivariant $S$-module need not be finite in positive characteristic, we show that the resolution still has finitely many "linear strands of higher slope". The crux of this paper is two technical results. The first is an extension to positive characteristic of Snowden's recent linearization of Draisma's embedding theorem which we use to study the generic category of $S$-modules. The second is a Nagpal-type "shift theorem" about torsion $S$-modules for which we introduce certain categorifications of the Hasse derivative. These two results together allow us to obtain explicit generators for the derived category. In a follow-up paper, we also use these results to prove finiteness results for local cohomology modules.

Abstract:Studying ceratin combinatorial properties of non-unique factorizations have been a subject of recent literatures. Little is known about two combinatorial invariants, namely the catenary degree and the tame degree, even in the case of numerical monoids. In this paper we compute these invariants for a certain class of numerical monoids generated by generalized arithmetic sequences. We also show that the difference between the tame degree and the catenary degree can be arbitrary large even if the number of minimal generators is fixed.

Spherical higher order Fourier analysis over finite fields I: equidistribution for nilsequences

Abstract:This paper is the first part of the series "Spherical higher order Fourier analysis over finite fields", aiming to develop the higher order Fourier analysis method along spheres over finite fields, and to solve the geometric Ramsey conjecture in the finite field setting. In this paper, we prove a quantitative equidistribution theorem for polynomial sequences in a nilmanifold, where the average is taken along spheres instead of cubes. To be more precise, let $\Omega\subseteq \mathbb{Z}^{d}$ be the preimage of a sphere $\mathbb{F}_{p}^{d}$ under the natural embedding from $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$ to $\mathbb{F}_{p}^{d}$. We showed that if a rational polynomial sequence $(g(n)\Gamma)_{n\in\Omega}$ is not equidistributed on a nilmanifold $G/\Gamma$, then there exists a nontrivial horizontal character $\eta$ of $G/\Gamma$ such that $\eta\circ g \mod \mathbb{Z}$ vanishes on $\Omega$. We also prove quantitative equidistribution and factorization theorems for more general sets arising from quadratic forms defined over $\mathbb{F}_{p}^{d}$. These results will serve as fundamental tools in later parts of the series to proof the spherical Gowers inverse theorem and the geometric Ramsey conjecture.

Abstract:Let be the ring of polynomial-valued holomorphic differential forms on complex n-space, referred to in physics as the superspace ring of rank n. The symmetric group acts diagonally on by permuting commuting and anticommuting generators simultaneously. We let be the ideal generated by -invariants with vanishing constant term and study the quotient of superspace by this ideal. We calculate the doubly-graded Hilbert series of and prove an 'operator theorem', which characterizes the harmonic space attached to in terms of the Vandermonde determinant and certain differential operators. Our methods employ commutative algebra results that were used in the study of Hessenberg varieties. Our results prove conjectures of N. Bergeron, Colmenarejo, Li, Machacek, Sulzgruber, Swanson, Wallach and Zabrocki.
