Abstract:We find the shortest realized stretch factor for a fully irreducible $\varphi\in\mathrm{Out}(F_3)$ and show that it is realized by a "principal" fully irreducible element. We also show that it is the only principal fully irreducible produced by a single fold in any rank.

Abstract:We present a solution to the Conjugacy Problem in the group of outer-automorphisms of $F_3$, a free group of rank 3. We distinguish according to several computable invariants, such as irreducibility, subgroups of polynomial growth, and subgroups carrying the attracting lamination. We establish, by considerations on train tracks, that the conjugacy problem is decidable for the outer-automorphisms of $F_3$ that preserve a given rank 2 free factor. Then we establish, by consideration on mapping tori, that it is decidable for outer-automorphisms of $F_3$ whose maximal polynomial growth subgroups are cyclic. This covers all the cases left by the state of the art.

Abstract:Every irreducible outer automorphism of the free group of rank r is topologically represented by an irreducible train track map $f$ on some graph $\Gamma$ of rank r. Moreover, $f$ can always be written as a composition of folds and a graph isomorphism. We give a lower bound on the stretch factor of an irreducible outer automorphism in terms of the number of folds of $f$ and the number of edges in $\Gamma$. In the case that $f$ is periodic on the vertex set of $\Gamma$, we show a precise notion of the latent symmetry of $\Gamma$ gives a lower bound on the number of folds required. We use this notion of latent symmetry to classify all possible irreducible single fold train track maps.

Abstract:We prove that the virtually cyclic (geometric) dimension of the finite index congruence subgroup $\mathrm{IA}_N(3)$ of $\mathrm{Out}(F_N)$ is $2N-2$. From this we deduce the virtually cyclic dimension of $\mathrm{Out}(F_N)$ is finite. Along the way we prove Lück's property (C) holds for $\mathrm{Out}(F_N)$, we prove that the commensurator of a cyclic subgroup of $\mathrm{IA}_N(3)$ equals its centraliser, we give an $\mathrm{IA}_N(3)$ analogue of various exact sequences arising from reduction systems for mapping class groups, and give a near complete description of centralisers of infinite order elements in $\mathrm{IA}_3(3)$.

Abstract:Let $\mathit{k}=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt[3]{d},\zeta_3)$, where $d>1$ is a cube-free positive integer, $\mathit{k}_0=\mathbb{Q}(\zeta_3)$ be the cyclotomic field containing a primitive cube root of unity $\zeta_3$, and $G=\operatorname{Gal}(\mathit{k}/\mathit{k}_0)$. The possible prime factorizations of $d$ in our main result [2, Thm. 1.1] give rise to new phenomena concerning the chain $\Theta=(\theta_i)_{i\in\mathbb{Z}}$ of \textit{lattice minima} in the underlying pure cubic subfield $L=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt[3]{d})$ of $\mathit{k}$. The aims of the present work are to give criteria for the occurrence of generators of primitive ambiguous principal ideals $(\alpha)\in\mathcal{P}_{\mathit{k}}^G/\mathcal{P}_{\mathit{k}_0}$ among the lattice minima $\Theta=(\theta_i)_{i\in\mathbb{Z}}$ of the underlying pure cubic field $L=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt[3]{d})$, and to explain exceptional behavior of the chain $\Theta$ for certain radicands $d$ with impact on determining the principal factorization type of $L$ and $\mathit{k}$ by means of Voronoi's algorithm.

Abstract:Several known results, by Rivin, Calegari-Maher and Sisto, show that an element $\phi_n\in Out(F_r)$, obtained after $n$ steps of a simple random walk on $Out(F_r)$, is fully irreducible with probability tending to 1 as $n\to\infty$. In this paper we construct a natural "train-track directed" random walk $\mathcal W$ on $Out(F_r)$ (where $r\ge 3$). We show that, for the element $\phi_n\in Out(F_r)$, obtained after $n$ steps of this random walk, with asymptotically positive probability the element $\phi_n$ has the following properties: $\phi_n$ is an ageometric fully irreducible, which admits a train-track representative with no periodic Nielsen paths and exactly one nondegenerate illegal turn, that $\phi_n$ has "rotationless index" $\frac{3}{2}-r$ (so that the geometric index of the attracting tree $T_{\phi_n}$ of $\phi_n$ is $2r-3$), has index list $\{\frac{3}{2}-r\}$ and the ideal Whitehead graph being the complete graph on $2r-1$ vertices, and that the axis bundle of $\phi_n$ in the Outer space $CV_r$ consists of a single axis.

Abstract:For a finite field $\mathbf{F}_{q^r}$ with fixed $q$ and $r$ sufficiently large, we prove the existence of a primitive element outside of a set of $r$ many affine hyperplanes for $q=4$ and $q=5$. This complements earlier results by Fernandes and Reis for $q\ge 7$. For $q=3$ the analogous result can be derived from a very recent bound on character sums of Iyer and Shparlinski. For $q=2$ the set consists only of a single element, and such a result is thus not possible.

Abstract:We obtain an asymptotic upper bound for the product of the $p$-parts of the orders of certain composition factors of a finite group acting completely reducibly and faithfully on a finite vector space of order divisible by a prime $p$. An application is given for the diameter of a nondiagonal orbital graph of an affine primitive permutation group.

Abstract:An atomic monoid $M$ is called length-factorial if for every non-invertible element $x \in M$, no two distinct factorizations of $x$ into irreducibles have the same length (i.e., number of irreducible factors, counting repetitions). The notion of length-factoriality was introduced by J. Coykendall and W. Smith in 2011 under the term 'other-half-factoriality': they used length-factoriality to provide a characterization of unique factorization domains. In this paper, we study length-factoriality in the more general context of commutative, cancellative monoids. In addition, we study factorization properties related to length-factoriality, namely, the PLS property (recently introduced by Chapman et al.) and bi-length-factoriality in the context of semirings.

Abstract:We classify irreducible II_1 subfactors A \subset B such that B \ominus A is reducible as an A-A bimodule, with index at most 6+1/5, leaving aside the composite subfactors at index exactly 6. Previous work has already achieved this up to index 3+\sqrt{5} \approx 5.23. We find there are exactly three such subfactors with index in (3+\sqrt{5}, 6+1/5], all with index 3+2\sqrt{2}. One of these comes from SO(3)_q at a root of unity, while the other two appear to be closely related, and are `braided up to a sign'.

Abstract:We determine the smallest irreducible Brauer characters for finite quasi-simple orthogonal type groups in non-defining characteristic. Under some restrictions on the characteristic we also prove a gap result showing that the next larger irreducible Brauer characters have a degree roughly the square of those of the smallest non-trivial characters.

Abstract:An element $\phi$ of the outer automorphism group $\Out(\f)$ of the rank $n$ free group $F_n$ is {\it polynomially growing} if the word lengths of conjugacy classes in $\f$ grow at most polynomially under iteration by $\phi$. It is {\it unipotent} if additionally its action on the first homology of $\f$ with integer coefficients is unipotent. In particular, if $\phi$ is polynomially growing and acts trivially on first homology with coefficients the integers mod 3 then $\phi$ is unipotent and also every polynomially growing element has a positive power that is unipotent. We solve the conjugacy problem in $\Out(\f)$ for the subset of unipotent elements. Specifically, there is an algorithm that decides if two such are conjugate in $\Out(\f)$.

Derandomizing Multivariate Polynomial Factoring for Low Degree Factors

Abstract:For a polynomial $f$ from a class $\mathcal{C}$ of polynomials, we show that the problem to compute all the constant degree irreducible factors of $f$ reduces in polynomial time to polynomial identity tests (PIT) for class $\mathcal{C}$ and divisibility tests of $f$ by constant degree polynomials. We apply the result to several classes $\mathcal{C}$ and obtain the constant degree factors in \begin{enumerate} \item polynomial time, for $\mathcal{C}$ being polynomials that have only constant degree factors, \item quasipolynomial time, for $\mathcal{C}$ being sparse polynomials, \item subexponential time, for $\mathcal{C}$ being polynomials that have constant-depth circuits. \end{enumerate} Result 2 and 3 were already shown by Kumar, Ramanathan, and Saptharishi with a different proof and their time complexities necessarily depend on black-box PITs for a related bigger class $\mathcal{C}'$. Our complexities vary on whether the input is given as a blackbox or whitebox. We also show that the problem to compute the sparse factors of polynomial from a class $\mathcal{C}$ reduces in polynomial time to PIT for class $\mathcal{C}$, divisibility tests of $f$ by sparse polynomials, and irreducibility preserving bivariate projections for sparse polynomials. For $\mathcal{C}$ being sparse polynomials, it follows that it suffices to derandomize irreducibility preserving bivariate projections for sparse polynomials in order to compute all the sparse irreducible factors efficiently. When we consider factors of sparse polynomials that are sums of univariate polynomials, a subclass of sparse polynomials, we obtain a polynomial time algorithm. This was already shown by Volkovich with a different proof.

Abstract:We establish the following non-abelian analogue of the Fundamental Theorem of Projective Geometry: the natural map from ${\rm{Aut}}(F_n)$ to the automorphism group of the free-factor complex $\mathcal{AF}_n$ is an isomorphism. We also prove the corresponding theorem for the action of ${\rm{Out}}(F_n)$ on the complex of conjugacy classes of free factors.

Abstract:This is one of a series of papers which aims towards a classification of imprimitive affine groups of rank $3$. In this paper, a complete classification is given of such groups of characteristic $p$ such that the point stabilizer is not $p$-local, which shows that such groups are very rare, namely, the two non-isomorphic groups of the form $2^4{:}\mathrm{GL}_3(2)$ with a unique minimal normal subgroup are the only examples.

Abstract:Let D be a Krull domain admitting a prime element with finite residue field and let K be its quotient field. We show that for all positive integers k and , there exists an integer-valued polynomial on D , that is, an element of , which has precisely k essentially different factorizations into irreducible elements of whose lengths are exactly . Using this, we characterize lengths of factorizations when D is a unique factorization domain and therefore also in case D is a discrete valuation domain. This solves an open problem proposed by Cahen, Fontana, Frisch, and Glaz.

Let $E$ be an algebraically closed countable field extension of the residue field of $F$. In this short note, we explain how the methods from <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1809.10247" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1809.10247">arXiv:1809.10247</a> and <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2210.07281" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2210.07281">arXiv:2210.07281</a> can be used to construct irreducible smooth representations of $\mathrm{GL}_n(F)$, $n>1$, over $E$ without a central character.
