Abstract:In 2016 Lemke Oliver and Soundararajan examined the gaps between the first hundred million primes and observed biases in their distributions modulo 10. Given our work on the evolution of the populations of various gaps across stages of Eratosthenes sieve, the observed biases are totally expected.

Abstract:We study the gaps between consecutive prime numbers directly through Eratosthenes sieve. Using elementary methods, we identify a recursive relation for these gaps and for specific sequences of consecutive gaps, known as constellations. Using this recursion we can estimate the numbers of a gap or of a constellation that occur between a prime and its square. This recursion also has explicit implications for open questions about gaps between prime numbers, including three questions posed by Erdös and Turán.

Abstract:Abstract We study how often exceptional configurations of irreducible polynomials over finite fields occur in the context of prime number races and Chebyshev's bias. In particular, we show that three types of biases, which we call “complete bias,” “lower order bias,” and “reversed bias,” occur with probability going to zero among the family of all squarefree monic polynomials of a given degree in as , a power of a fixed prime, goes to infinity. The bounds given extend a previous result of Kowalski, who studied a similar question along particular one‐parameter families of reducible polynomials. The tools used are the large sieve for Frobenius developed by Kowalski, an improvement of it due to Perret–Gentil and considerations from the theory of linear recurrence sequences and arithmetic geometry.

Abstract:Assuming a variant of the Hardy--Littlewood prime $k$-tuple conjecture, we compute mixed moments of the number of primes in disjoint short intervals and short progressions respectively. This involves estimating the mean of singular series over any product of lattices, which is of independent interest. As a consequence, we establish the convergence of both sequences of suitably normalized primes to a standard Poisson point process.

Abstract:We study the first occurrences of gaps between primes in the arithmetic progression (P): $r$, $r+q$, $r+2q$, $r+3q,\ldots,$ where $q$ and $r$ are coprime integers, $q>r\ge1$. The growth trend and distribution of the first-occurrence gap sizes are similar to those of maximal gaps between primes in (P). The histograms of first-occurrence gap sizes, after appropriate rescaling, are well approximated by the Gumbel extreme value distribution. Computations suggest that first-occurrence gaps are much more numerous than maximal gaps: there are $O(\log^2 x)$ first-occurrence gaps between primes in (P) below $x$, while the number of maximal gaps is only $O(\log x)$. We explore the connection between the asymptotic density of gaps of a given size and the corresponding generalization of Brun's constant. For the first occurrence of gap $d$ in (P), we expect the end-of-gap prime $p\asymp\sqrt{d}\exp(\sqrt{d/\varphi(q)})$ infinitely often. Finally, we study the gap size as a function of its index in the sequence of first-occurrence gaps.

Gaps Between Consecutive Primes and the Exponential Distribution

Abstract:Based on the primes less than $4 \times 10^{18}$, Oliveira e Silva et al. (2014) conjectured an asymptotic formula for the sum of the $k$th power of the gaps between consecutive primes less than a large number $x$. We show that the conjecture of Oliveira e Silva holds if and only if the $k$th moment of the first $n$ gaps is asymptotic to the $k$th moment of an exponential distribution with mean $\log n$, though the distribution of gaps is not exponential. Asymptotically exponential moments imply that the gaps asymptotically obey Taylor's law of fluctuation scaling: variance of the first $n$ gaps $\sim$ (mean of the first $n$ gaps)$^2$. If the distribution of the first $n$ gaps is asymptotically exponential with mean $\log n$, then the expectation of the largest of the first $n$ gaps is asymptotic to $(\log n)^2$. The largest of the first $n$ gaps is asymptotic to $(\log n)^2$ if and only if the Cramér-Shanks conjecture holds. Numerical counts of gaps and the maximal gap $G_n$ among the first $n$ gaps test these results. While most values of $G_n$ are better approximated by $(\log n)^2$ than by other models, seven values of $n$ with $G_{n} >2 e^{-\gamma}(\log n)^2$ suggest that $\limsup_{n \to\infty} G_n/[2e^{-\gamma}(\log n)^2]$ may exceed 1.

On primes in arithmetic progressions and bounded gaps between many primes

Abstract:We prove that the primes below $x$ are, on average, equidistributed in arithmetic progressions to smooth moduli of size up to $x^{1/2+1/40-\epsilon}$. The exponent of distribution $\tfrac{1}{2} + \tfrac{1}{40}$ improves on a result of Polymath, who had previously obtained the exponent $\tfrac{1}{2} + \tfrac{7}{300}$. As a consequence, we improve results on intervals of bounded length which contain many primes, showing that $\liminf_{n \rightarrow \infty} (p_{n+m}-p_n) = O(\exp(3.8075 m))$. The main new ingredient of our proof is a modification of the q-van der Corput process. It allows us to exploit additional averaging for the exponential sums which appear in the Type I estimates of Polymath.

Small gaps between almost-twin primes

Abstract:Let $m \in \mathbb{N}$ be large. We show that there exist infinitely many primes $q_{1}< \cdot\cdot\cdot < q_{m+1}$ such that \[ q_{m+1}-q_{1}=O(e^{7.63m}) \] and $q_{j}+2$ has at most \[ \frac{7.36m}{\log 2} + \frac{4\log m}{\log 2} + 21 \] prime factors for each $1 \leq j \leq m+1$. This improves the previous result of Li and Pan, replacing $e^{7.63m}$ by $m^{4}e^{8m}$ and $\frac{7.36m}{\log 2} + \frac{4\log m}{\log 2} + 21$ by $\frac{16m}{\log 2} + \frac{5\log m}{\log 2} + 37$. The main inputs are the Maynard-Tao sieve, a minorant for the indicator function of the primes constructed by Baker and Irving, for which a stronger equidistribution theorem in arithmatic progressions to smooth moduli is applicable, and Tao's approach previously used to estimate $\sum_{x \leq n < 2x} \mathbf{1}_{\mathbb{P}}(n)\mathbf{1}_{\mathbb{P}}(n+12)\omega_{n}$, where $\mathbf{1}_{\mathbb{P}}$ stands for the characteristic function of the primes and $\omega_{n}$ are multidimensional sieve weights.

Abstract:While the prime numbers have been subject to mathematical inquiry since the ancient Greeks, the accumulated effort of understanding these numbers has - as Marcus du Sautoy recently phrased it - 'not revealed the origins of what makes the primes tick.' Here, we suggest that a resolution to this long-standing conundrum is attainable by defining the primes prior to the natural numbers - as opposed to the standard number theoretical definition of primes where these numbers derive from the natural numbers. The result is a first-principles perspective on the primes that exposes and explains the 'origins' of their distribution and their mathematical properties and provides an intuitive as well as pedagogical approach to the primes with the potential to impact our thinking about these age-old mathematical objects. A few immediate outcomes of this perspective are another proof of the fundamental theorem of arithmetic, a probabilistic model of primes sharing as well as explaining their subrandom correlation structure, and an equivalent formulation of the Riemann hypothesis.

Abstract:We show the primes have level of distribution $66/107\approx 0.617$ using triply well-factorable weights. This gives the highest level of distribution for primes in any setting, improving on the prior record level $3/5=0.60$ of Maynard. We also extend this level to $5/8=0.625$, assuming Selberg's eigenvalue conjecture. As applications of the method, we obtain new upper bounds for twin primes and for Goldbach representations of even numbers $a$. For the Goldbach problem, this is the first use of a level of distribution beyond the square-root barrier, and leads to the greatest improvement on the problem since Bombieri-Davenport from 1966. Our proof optimizes the Deshouillers-Iwaniec spectral large sieve estimates, both in the exceptional spectrum and uniformity in the residue $a$, refining Drappeau-Pratt-Radziwill and Assing-Blomer-Li.

Abstract:The set of short intervals between consecutive primes squared has the pleasant---but seemingly unexploited---property that each interval $s_k:=\{p_k^2, \dots,p_{k+1}^2-1\}$ is fully sieved by the $k$ first primes. Here we take advantage of this essential characteristic and present evidence for the conjecture that $\pi_k \sim |s_k|/ \log p_{k+1}^2$, where $\pi_k$ is the number of primes in $s_k$; or even stricter, that $y=x^{1/2}$ is both necessary and sufficient for the prime number theorem to be valid in intervals of length $y$. In addition, we propose and substantiate that the prime counting function $\pi(x)$ is best understood as a sum of correlated random variables $\pi_k$. Under this assumption, we derive the theoretical variance of $\pi(p_{k+1}^2)=\sum_{j=1}^k \pi_j$, from which we are led to conjecture that $|\pi({x})-\textrm{li}(x)| =O(\sqrt{\textrm{li}(x)})$. Emerging from our investigations is the view that the intervals between consecutive primes squared hold the key to a furthered understanding of the distribution of primes; as evidenced, this perspective also builds strong support in favour of the Riemann hypothesis.

Abstract:We prove that $\mathop{\mathbb{E}}_{m \leq M} \mathop{\mathbb{E}}_{n \leq N} \Lambda(n) \Lambda\bigl(n + \lfloor m^c \rfloor\bigr) = 1 + \rm{O}(\log^{2 - Bc} N)$, where $c > 2$ is a non-integer, $B \geq 3/c$, and $M$ is of order $N^{1/c} \log^{-B} N$. As a combinatorial consequence, we obtain that the primes contain infinitely many pairs whose difference belongs to the Piatetski-Shapiro sequence $\bigl\{\lfloor m^c \rfloor \colon m \in \mathbb{N} \bigr\}$ for any non-integer $c > 2$.

Abstract:Sondow et al have studied Ramanujan primes (RPs) and observed numerically that, while half of all primes are RPs asymptotically, one obtains runs of consecutives RPs (resp. non-RPs) which are statistically significantly longer than one would expect if one was tossing an unbiased coin. In this discussion paper we attempt a heuristic explanation of this phenomenon. Our heuristic follows naturally from the Prime Number Theorem, but seems to be only partly satisfactory. It motivates why one should obtain long runs of both RPs and non-RPs, and also longer runs of non-RPs than of RPs. However, it also suggests that one should obtain longer runs of RPs than have so far been observed in the data, and this issue remains puzzling.

Abstract:Montgomery and Soundararajan showed that the distribution of $\psi(x+H) - \psi(x)$, for $0 \le x \le N$, is approximately normal with mean $ \sim H$ and variance $\sim H \log (N/H)$, when $N^{\delta} \le H \le N^{1-\delta}$. Their work depends on showing that sums $R_k(h)$ of $k$-term singular series are $\mu_k(-h \log h + Ah)^{k/2} + O_k(h^{k/2-1/(7k) + \varepsilon})$, where $A$ is a constant and $\mu_k$ are the Gaussian moment constants. We study lower-order terms in the size of these moments. We conjecture that when $k$ is odd, $R_k(h) \asymp h^{(k-1)/2}(\log h)^{(k+1)/2}$. We prove an upper bound with the correct power of $h$ when $k = 3$, and prove analogous upper bounds in the function field setting when $k =3$ and $k = 5$. We provide further evidence for this conjecture in the form of numerical computations.

On differences between consecutive numbers coprime to primorials

Abstract:We consider the ordered sequence of coprimes to a given primorial number and investigate differences between consecutive elements. The Jacobsthal function applied to the concerning primorial turns out to represent the greatest of these differences. We will explore the smallest even number which does not occur as such a difference. Little is known about even natural numbers below the respective Jacobsthal function which cannot be represented as a difference between consecutive numbers coprime to a primorial. Existence and frequency of these numbers have not yet been clarified. Using the relation between restricted coverings of sequences of consecutive integers and the occuring differences, we derive a bound below which all even natural numbers are differences between consecutive numbers coprime to a given primorial $p_k\#$. Furthermore, we provide exhaustive computational results on non-existent differences for primes $p_k$ up to $k=44$. The data suggest the assumption that all even natural numbers up to $h(k-1)$ occur as differences of coprimes to $p_k\#$ where $h(n)$ is the Jacobsthal function applied to $p_n\#$.

On twin prime distribution and associated biases

Abstract:A modified totient function ($\phi_2$) is seen to play a significant role in the study of the twin prime distribution. The function is defined as $\phi_2(n):=\#\{a\le n ~\vert ~\textrm{$a(a+2)$ is coprime to $n$}\}$ and is shown here to have following product form: $\phi_2(n) = n (1-\frac{\theta_n}{2}) \prod_{p>2,~p\vert n}(1-\frac 2 p)$, where $p$ denotes a prime and $\theta_n = 0$ or $1$ for odd or even $n$ respectively. Using this function it is proved for a given $n$ that there always exists a number $m > n$ so that $(p, m(m + 2)) = 1$ for every prime $p \le n$. We also establish a Legendre-type formula for the twin prime counting function in the following form: $\pi_2(x) - \pi_2(\sqrt{x}) = \sum_{ab\vert P(\sqrt{x})}\mu(ab) \left[\frac{x-l_{a,b}}{ab}\right]$, where $P(z)=\prod_{p\le z}p$ and $a$ is always odd. Here $l_{a,b}$ is the lowest positive integer so that $a\vert l_{a,b}$ and $b\vert (l_{a,b}+2)$. In the latter part of this work, we discussion three different types of biases in the distribution of twin primes. The first two biases are similar to the biases in primes as reported by Chebyshev, and Oliver and Soundararajan. Our third reported bias is on the difference ($D$) between (the first members of) two consecutive twin primes; it is observed that $D\pm1$ is more likely to be a prime than an odd composite number.

Abstract:In the present work we prove a number of surprising results about gaps between consecutive primes and arithmetic progressions in the sequence of generalized twin primes which could not have been proven without the recent fantastic achievement of Yitang Zhang about the existence of bounded gaps between consecutive primes. Most of these results would have belonged to the category of science fiction a decade ago. However, the presented results are far from being immediate consequences of Zhang's famous theorem: they require various new ideas, other important properties of the applied sieve function and a closer analysis of the methods of Goldston-Pintz-Yildirim, Green-Tao, and Zhang, respectively.

Abstract:We speculate on the distribution of primes in exponentially growing, linear recurrence sequences $(u_n)_{n\geq 0}$ in the integers. By tweaking a heuristic which is successfully used to predict the number of prime values of polynomials, we guess that either there are only finitely many primes $u_n$, or else there exists a constant $c_u>0$ (which we can give good approximations to) such that there are $\sim c_u \log N$ primes $u_n$ with $n\leq N$, as $N\to \infty$. We compare our conjecture to the limited amount of data that we can compile.

Abstract:A deep conjecture of Montgomery and Soundararajan on the distribution of prime numbers in short intervals of length $h$ says that the third moment is bounded by $\ll h^{\frac {3}{2}-c}$ for some $c>0$. There is in the literature some conditional evidence towards this conjecture whilst in the first article to this series we gave the first instance of unconditional evidence in the form of a bound corresponding to $\ll h^{7/5+o(1)}$. In this article we push the exponent down to $\ll h^{1+o(1)}$ which more or less is expected to be best possible.
