Abstract:Skin lesion segmentation is a critical task in computer-aided diagnosis systems for dermatological diseases. Accurate segmentation of skin lesions from medical images is essential for early detection, diagnosis, and treatment planning. In this paper, we propose a new model for skin lesion segmentation namely AC-MambaSeg, an enhanced model that has the hybrid CNN-Mamba backbone, and integrates advanced components such as Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM), Attention Gate, and Selective Kernel Bottleneck. AC-MambaSeg leverages the Vision Mamba framework for efficient feature extraction, while CBAM and Selective Kernel Bottleneck enhance its ability to focus on informative regions and suppress background noise. We evaluate the performance of AC-MambaSeg on diverse datasets of skin lesion images including ISIC-2018 and PH2; then compare it against existing segmentation methods. Our model shows promising potential for improving computer-aided diagnosis systems and facilitating early detection and treatment of dermatological diseases. What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main objective of this paper is to propose a new skin lesion segmentation model, named AC-MambaSeg, to address the challenging issues in skin lesion image segmentation. Specifically, the paper aims to improve the accuracy of skin lesion segmentation by combining the advantages of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) with the Visual Mamba framework. Additionally, the paper integrates other advanced components such as Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM), Attention Gate, and Selective Kernel Bottleneck to further enhance the model's capabilities. The main contributions of the paper are as follows: 1. **Proposed a new model**: AC-MambaSeg, which merges the strengths of CNN and the Visual Mamba framework, and utilizes technologies like CBAM, Attention Gate, and Selective Kernel Bottleneck, aiming to improve the performance of skin lesion segmentation tasks. 2. **Performance validation**: The authors evaluated the performance of AC-MambaSeg on two skin lesion image datasets, ISIC-2018 and PH2, and compared it with existing segmentation methods, demonstrating significant performance improvements of the proposed model. 3. **Efficiency demonstration**: Besides showing excellent performance, AC-MambaSeg also excels in terms of the number of parameters and computational cost, requiring fewer resources compared to other models. In summary, the paper attempts to address the problem of developing an efficient and accurate skin lesion segmentation model that can assist doctors in early diagnosis and treatment planning in practical applications.
