Abstract:Time operators for an abstract semi-bounded self-adjoint operator $H$ with purely discrete spectrum is considered. The existence of a bounded self-adjoint time operator $T$ for $H$ is known as Galapon time operator. In this paper, a self-adjoint but unbounded time operator $T$ of $H$ is constructed.

Abstract:We investigate time operators in the context of quantum time crystals in ring systems. A generalized commutation relation called the generalized weak Weyl relation is used to derive a class of self-adjoint time operators for ring systems with a periodic time evolution: The conventional Aharonov-Bohm time operator is obtained by taking the infinite-radius limit. Then, we discuss the connection between time operators, time crystals and real-space topology. We also reveal the relationship between our time operators and a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric time operator. These time operators are then used to derive several energy-time uncertainty relations.

Abstract:A time operator T̂ε of the one-dimensional harmonic oscillator ĥε=12(p2+εq2) is rigorously constructed. It is formally expressed as T̂ε=121ε(arctan(εt̂0)+arctan(εt̂1)) with t̂0=p−1q and t̂1=qp−1. It is shown that the canonical commutation relation [hε,T̂ε]=−i1 holds true on a dense domain in the sense of sesqui-linear forms, and the limit of T̂ε as ε → 0 is shown. Finally a matrix representation of T̂ε and its analytic continuation are given.

Empirical adequacy of the time operator canonically conjugate to a Hamiltonian generating translations

Abstract:To admit a canonically conjugate time operator, the Hamiltonian has to be a generator of translations (like the momentum operator generates translations in space), so its spectrum must be unbounded. But the Hamiltonian governing our world is thought to be bounded from below. Also, judging by the number of fields and parameters of the Standard Model, the Hamiltonian seems much more complicated. In this article I give examples of worlds governed by Hamiltonians generating translations. They can be expressed as a partial derivative operator just like the momentum operator, but when expressed in function of other observables they can exhibit any level of complexity. The examples include any quantum world realizing a standard ideal measurement, any quantum world containing a clock or a free massless fermion, the quantum representation of any deterministic time-reversible dynamical system without time loops, and any quantum world that cannot return to a past state. Such worlds are as sophisticated as our world, but they admit a time operator. I show that, despite having unbounded Hamiltonian, they do not decay to infinite negative energy any more than any quantum or classical world. Since two such quantum systems of the same Hilbert space dimension are unitarily equivalent even if the physical content of their observables is very different, they are concrete counterexamples to Hilbert Space Fundamentalism (HSF). Taking the observables into account removes the ambiguity of HSF and the clock ambiguity problem attributed to the Page-Wootters formalism, also caused by assuming HSF. These results provide additional motivations to restore the spacetime symmetry in the formulation of Quantum Mechanics and for the Page-Wootters formalism.

Abstract:We consider deformations of unbounded operators by using the novel construction tool of warped convolutions. By using the Kato-Rellich theorem we show that unbounded self-adjoint deformed operators are self-adjoint if they satisfy a certain condition. This condition proves itself to be necessary for the oscillatory integral to be well-defined. Moreover, different proofs are given for self-adjointness of deformed unbounded operators in the context of quantum mechanics and quantum field theory.

Abstract:We give a precise and complete description on the spectrum for a class of non-self-adjoint quasi-periodic operators acting on $\ell^2(\mathbb{Z}^d)$ which contains the Sarnak's model as a special case. As a consequence, one can see various interesting spectral phenomena including $\mathscr{P}\mathscr{T}$ symmetric breaking, the non-simply-connected two-dimensional spectrum in this class of operators. Particularly, we provide new examples of non-self-adjoint operator in $\mathscr{l}^{2}(\mathbb{Z})$ whose spectra (actually a two-dimensional subset of $\mathbb{C}$) can not be approximated by the spectra of its finite-interval truncations.

Abstract:Let $H = -d^2/dx^2 + q(x)$, $x \in \mathbb{R}$, where $q(x)$ is a periodic potential, and suppose that the spectrum $\sigma(H)$ of $H$ is the positive semi-axis $[0, \infty)$. In the case where $q(x)$ is real-valued (and locally square-integrable) a well-known result of G. Borg states that $q(x)$ must vanish almost everywhere. However, as it was first observed by M.G. Gasymov, there is an abundance of complex-valued potentials for which $\sigma(H) = [0, \infty)$. In this article we conjecture a characterization of all complex-valued potentials whose spectrum is $[0, \infty)$. We also present an analog of Borg's result for complex potentials.

Abstract:Given a family of self-adjoint operators (At)t∈T$${(A_t)_{t \in T}}$$ indexed by a parameter t in some topological space T, necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the spectrum σ(At)$${\sigma(A_t)}$$ to be Vietoris continuous with respect to t. Equivalently the boundaries and the gap edges are continuous in t. If (T, d) is a complete metric space with metric d, these conditions are extended to guarantee Hölder continuity of the spectral boundaries and of the spectral gap edges. As a corollary, an upper bound is provided for the size of closing gaps.

Abstract:We study the problem when an almost commuting $n$-tuple self-adjoint operators in an infinite dimensional separable Hilbert space $H$ is close to an $n$-tuple of commuting self-adjoint operators on $H.$ We give an affirmative answer to the problem when the synthetic-spectrum and the essential synthetic-spectrum are close. Examples are also exhibited that, in general, the answer to the problem when $n\ge 3$ is negative even the associated Fredholm index vanishes. In the case that $n=2,$ we show that a pair of almost commuting self-adjoint operators in an infinite dimensional separable Hilbert space is close to a commuting pair of self-adjoint operators if and only if a corresponding Fredholm index vanishes outside of an essential synthetic-spectrum. This is an attempt to solve a problem proposed by David Mumford related to quantum theory and measurements.

Abstract:Conjugate operator $T$ of 1D-harmonic oscillator $N=1/2 (p^2+q^2-1)$ is defined by an operator satisfying canonical commutation relation $[N,T]=-i$ on some domain but not necessarily dense. The angle operator $T_A=1/2 (\arctan q^{-1} p+\arctan pq^{-1} )$ and Galapon operator $T_G=i \sum_{n=0}^\infty(\sum_{m\neq n}\frac{(v_m,\cdot) }{n-m}v_n)$ are examples of conjugate operators, where ${v_n}$ denotes the set of normalized eigenvectors of $N$. Let $T$ be a subset of conjugate operators of $N$. A classification of $T$ are given as $T=T_{\{0\}}\cup T_{D\setminus \{0\}}\cup T_{\partial D}$, and $T_A\in T_{\{0\}}$ and $T_G\in T_{\partial D}$ are shown. Here the classification is specified by a pair of parameters $(\omega,m)\in C\times N$. Finally the time evolution $T_{\omega,m}(t)=e^{itN} T_{\omega,m}e^{-itN}$ for $T_{\omega,m}\in T$ is investigated, and show that $T_{\omega,m}(t)$ is periodic.

Abstract:This monograph contains revised and enlarged materials from previous lecture notes of undergraduate and graduate courses and seminars delivered by both authors over the last years on a subject that is central both in abstract operator theory and in applications to quantum mechanics: to decide whether a given densely defined and symmetric operator on Hilbert space admits a unique self-adjoint realisation, namely its operator closure, or whether instead it admits an infinite multiplicity of distinct self-adjoint extensions, and in the latter case to classify them and characterise their main features (operator and quadratic form domains, spectrum, etc.) This is at the same time a very classical, well established field, corresponding to the first part of the monograph, and a territory of novel, modern applications, a selection of which, obviously subjective to some extent, but also driven by a pedagogical criterion, is presented in depth in the second part. A number of models are discussed, which are receiving today new or renewed interest in mathematical physics, in particular from the point of view of realising certain operators of interests self-adjointly, classifying their self-adjoint extensions as actual quantum Hamiltonians, studying their spectral and scattering properties, and the like, but also from the point of view of intermediate technical questions that have theoretical interest per se, such as characterising the corresponding operator closures and adjoints.

Abstract:Distinguished selfadjoint extensions of operators which are not semibounded can be deduced from the positivity of the Schur Complement (as a quadratic form). In practical applications this amounts to proving a Hardy-like inequality. Particular cases are Dirac-Coulomb operators where distinguished selfadjoint extensions are obtained for the optimal range of coupling constants.

Abstract:We consider the characteristic time operator $\operator{T}$ which is bounded and self-adjoint. For a semibounded and discrete Hamiltonian $\operator{H}$ whose energy eigenvalues satisfy $\sum_s E_s^{-2} < \infty$, the characteristic time operator satisfies the canonical relation $[\operator{T},\operator{H}]\ket{\psi}=i\hbar\ket{\psi}$ for $\ket{\psi}$ in a dense subspace of the Hilbert space. While these bounded time operators are not covariant, we show that they still satisfy the canonical relation in a set of times of total measure zero which we refer to as the time invariant set $\mathscr{T}$. In the neighborhood of each time $t$ in $\mathscr{T}$, this time operator $\operator{T}$ is still canonically conjugate to $\operator{H}$ and thus moves in step with parametric time, and its expectation value gives the parametric time. Its two-dimensional projection saturates the time-energy uncertainty relation in the neighborhood of $\mathscr{T}$, and is proportional to the Pauli matrix $\sigma_y$. Thus, one can construct a quantum clock that tells the time in the neighborhood of $\mathscr{T}$ by measuring a compatible observable. In a Larmor clock for example, measurement of the spin $\operator{S}_y$ can be used to yield the parametric time in the neighborhood of its period.

Abstract:Time operator is studied on the basis of field quantization, where the difficulty stemming from Pauliʼs theorem is circumvented by borrowing ideas from the covariant quantization of the bosonic string, i.e., one can remove the negative energy states by imposing Virasoro constraints. Applying the index theorem, one can show that in a different subspace of a Fock space, there is a different self-adjoint time operator. However, the self-adjoint time operator in the maximal subspace of the Fock space can also represent the self-adjoint time operator in the other subspaces, such that it can be taken as the single, universal time operator. Furthermore, a new insight on Pauliʼs theorem is presented.

Abstract:We consider non-self-adjoint operators in Hilbert spaces of the form $H=H_0+CWC$, where $H_0$ is self-adjoint, $W$ is bounded and $C$ is a metric operator, $C$ bounded and relatively compact with respect to $H_0$. We suppose that $C(H_0-z)^{-1}C$ is uniformly bounded in $z\in\mathbb{C}\setminus\mathbb{R}$. We define the spectral singularities of $H$ as the points of the essential spectrum $\lambda\in\sigma_{\mathrm{ess}}(H)$ such that $C(H\pm i\varepsilon)^{-1}CW$ does not have a limit as $\varepsilon\to0^+$. We prove that the spectral singularities of $H$ are in one-to-one correspondence with the eigenvalues, associated to resonant states, of an extension of $H$ to a larger Hilbert space. Next, we show that the asymptotically disappearing states for $H$, i.e. the set of vectors $\varphi$ such that $e^{\pm itH}\varphi\to0$ as $t\to\infty$, coincide with the generalized eigenstates of $H$ corresponding to eigenvalues $\lambda\in\mathbb{C}$, $\mp\mathrm{Im}(\lambda)>0$. Finally, we define the absolutely continuous spectral subspace of $H$ and show that it satisfies $\mathcal{H}_{\mathrm{ac}}(H)=\mathcal{H}_{\mathrm{p}}(H^*)^\perp$, where $\mathcal{H}_{\mathrm{p}}(H^*)$ stands for the point spectrum of $H^*$. We thus obtain a direct sum decomposition of the Hilbert spaces in terms of spectral subspaces of $H$. One of the main ingredients of our proofs is a spectral resolution formula for a bounded operator $r(H)$ regularizing the identity at spectral singularities. Our results apply to Schrödinger operators with complex potentials.

Abstract:Let $A$ and $B$ be two densely defined unbounded closeable operators in a Hilbert space such that their unbounded operator products $AB$ and $BA$ are also densely defined. Then all four operators possess adjoints and we obtain new inclusion bounds for the operator product closures $\bar{A} \bar{B}$ and $\bar{AB}$ in terms of new relations among the operator adjoints. These in turn lead to sharpened understandings for when products of unbounded self-adjoint and unbounded normal operators are self-adjoint and normal.
