Abstract:Let $s$ be an $n$-dimensional symplectic form over an arbitrary field with characteristic not $2$, with $n>2$. The simplicity of the group $\mathrm{Sp}(s)/\{\pm \mathrm{id}\}$ and the existence of a non-trivial involution in $\mathrm{Sp}(s)$ yield that every element of $\mathrm{Sp}(s)$ is a product of involutions. Extending and improving recent results of Awa, de La Cruz, Ellers and Villa with the help of a completely new method, we prove that if the underlying field is infinite, every element of $\mathrm{Sp}(s)$ is the product of four involutions if $n$ is a multiple of $4$, and of five involutions otherwise. The first part of this result is shown to be optimal for all multiples of $4$ and all fields, and is shown to fail for the fields with three elements and for $n=4$. Whether the second part of the result is optimal remains an open question. Finite fields will be tackled in a subsequent article.

Abstract:We study fixed loci of antisymplectic involutions on projective hyperkähler manifolds of $\mathrm{K3}^{[n]}$-type. When the involution is induced by an ample class of square 2 in the Beauville-Bogomolov-Fujiki lattice, we show that the number of connected components of the fixed locus is equal to the divisibility of the class, which is either 1 or 2.

Abstract:We continue our study of fixed loci of antisymplectic involutions on projective hyper-Kähler manifolds of $\mathrm{K3}^{[n]}$-type induced by an ample class of square 2 in the Beauville-Bogomolov-Fujiki lattice. We prove that if the divisibility of the ample class is 2, then one connected component of the fixed locus is a Fano manifold of index 3, thus generalizing to higher dimensions the case of the LLSvS 8-fold associated to a cubic fourfold. We also show that, in the case of the LLSvS 8-fold associated to a cubic fourfold, the second component of the fixed locus is of general type, thus answering a question by Manfred Lehn.

Abstract:An automorphism $u$ of a vector space is called unipotent of index $2$ whenever $(u-\mathrm{id})^2=0$. Let $b$ be a non-degenerate symmetric or skewsymmetric bilinear form on a vector space $V$ over a field $\mathbb{F}$ of characteristic different from $2$. Here, we characterize the elements of the isometry group of $b$ that are the product of two unipotent isometries of index $2$. In particular, if $b$ is symplectic we prove that an element of the symplectic group of $b$ is the product of two unipotent isometries of index $2$ if and only if it has no Jordan cell of odd size for the eigenvalue $-1$. As an application, we prove that every element of a symplectic group is the product of three unipotent elements of index $2$ (and no less in general). For orthogonal groups, the classification closely matches the classification of sums of two square-zero skewselfadjoint operators that was obtained in a recent article.

Abstract:A $3$-fold and a $5$-fold quadratic Pfister forms are canonically associated to every symplectic involution on a central simple algebra of degree $8$ over a field of characteristic $2$. The same construction on central simple algebras of degree $4$ associates to every unitary involution a $2$-fold and a $4$-fold Pfister quadratic forms, and to every orthogonal involution a $1$-fold and a $3$-fold quasi-Pfister forms. These forms hold structural information on the algebra with involution.

Abstract:Let X be a Hyperkähler variety deformation equivalent to the Hilbert square on a K3 surface and let f be an involution preserving the symplectic form. We prove that the fixed locus of f consists of 28 isolated points and 1 K3 surface, moreover the anti-invariant lattice of the induced involution on H^2(X,Z) is isomorphic to E_8(-2). Finally we prove that any couple consisting of one such variety and a symplectic involution on it can be deformed into a couple consisting of the Hilbert square of a K3 surface and the involution induced by a Nikulin involution on the K3 surface.

Abstract:Let $S_{p,q}$ be the hypersurface in $\mathbb{R}^{p+q+1}$ defined by the following: $$ S_{p,q} := \left\lbrace (x_1,\ldots,x_{p+1},x_{p+2},\ldots,x_{p+q+1}) \in \mathbb{R}^{p+q+1} \big| \left( \sum_{i=1}^{p+1} x_i^2 - a^2 \right)^2 + \sum_{j=p+2}^{p+q+1} x_j^2 = 1 \right\rbrace,$$ where $a > 1$. We show that $S_{p,q}$ is homeomorphic to the product $S^p \times S^q$. We classify all degree one and two polynomial vector fields on $S_{p,q}$. We consider the polynomial vector field $\mathcal{X} = (R_1,...,R_{p+1},R_{p+2},...,R_{p+q+1})$ in $\mathbb{R}^{p+q+1}$ which keeps $S_{p,q}$ invariant. Then we study the number of certain invariant algebraic subsets of $S_{p,q}$ for the vector field $\mathcal{X}$ if either $p>1$ or $q>1$.

Abstract:We prove (with a mild restriction on the multidegrees) that all secant varieties of Segre-Veronese varieties with $k>2$ factors, $k-2$ of them being $\mathbb{P}^1$, have the expected dimension. This is equivalent to compute the dimension of the set of all partially symmetric tensors with a fixed rank and the same format. The proof uses the case $k=2$ proved by Galuppi and Oneto. Our theorem is an easy consequence of a theorem proved here for arbitrary projective varieties with a projective line as a factor and with respect to complete linear systems.

Abstract:A square matrix A is an involution if A2=I . The centralizer of a square matrix S , denoted by C(S) , is the set of all matrices A such that AS = SA . Let F be an algebraically closed field of characteristic not equal to 2. It is known that the study of products of involutions in C(S) reduces to the case where S is a basic Weyr matrix. We show that if S is a basic Weyr matrix with nonhomogeneous Weyr structure (k1,k2,...,kr) such that ki>ki+1 , for i=1,2,...,r−1 , then A∈C(S) is a product of involutions in C(S) if and only if A is a block upper triangular matrix with special form such that the diagonal blocks of A have determinant ±1 . We also give results for the general nonhomogeneous Weyr structure of length three.

Perverse sheaves on symmetric products of the plane

Abstract:For any field $k$, we give an algebraic description of the category $\mathrm{Perv}_\mathscr{S}(S^n (\mathbb{C}^2),k)$ of perverse sheaves on the $n$-fold symmetric product of the plane $S^n(\mathbb{C}^2)$ constructible with respect to its natural stratification and with coefficients in $k$. In particular, we show that it is equivalent to the category of modules over a new algebra that is closely related to the Schur algebra. As part of our description we obtain an analogue of modular Springer theory for the Hilbert scheme $\mathrm{Hilb}^n(\mathbb{C}^2)$ of $n$ points in the plane with its Hilbert-Chow morphism.

Abstract:Abstract A symplectic bundle over an algebraic curve has a natural invariant s Lag determined by the maximal degree of its Lagrangian subbundles. This can be viewed as a generalization of the classical Segre invariants of a vector bundle. We give a sharp upper bound on s Lag which is analogous to the Hirschowitz bound on the classical Segre invariants. Furthermore, we study the stratifications induced by s Lag on moduli spaces of symplectic bundles, and get a full picture for the case of rank four.

Abstract:Answering a question of Geoff Robinson, we compute the large n limiting proportion of i(n,q)/q^[n^2/2], where i(n,q) denotes the number of involutions in GL(n,q). We give similar results for the finite unitary, symplectic, and orthogonal groups, in both odd and even characteristic. At the heart of this work are certain new "sum=product" identities. Our self-contained treatment of the enumeration of involutions in even characteristic symplectic and orthogonal groups may also be of interest.

Abstract:An element of a group is called reversible if it is conjugate to its own inverse. Reversible elements are closely related to strongly reversible elements, which can be expressed as a product of two involutions. In this paper, we classify the reversible and strongly reversible elements in the quaternionic special linear group $\mathrm{SL}(n,\mathbb{H})$ and quaternionic projective linear group $ \mathrm{PSL}(n,\mathbb{H})$. We prove that an element of $ \mathrm{SL}(n,\mathbb{H})$ (resp. $ \mathrm{PSL}(n,\mathbb{H})$) is reversible if and only if it is a product of two skew-involutions (resp. involutions).

Abstract:We provide new examples of anti-symplectic involutions on moduli spaces of stable sheaves on K3 surfaces. These involutions are constructed through (anti) autoequivalences of the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on K3 surfaces arising from spherical bundles. We analyze these induced maps in the moduli space, imposing restrictions on the Mukai vector and considering the preservation of stability conditions. Our construction extends and unifies classical examples, such as the Beauville involutions, Markman-O'Grady reflections and a more recent construction by Beri-Manivel.
