Abstract:By means of a nested sequence of some critical pieces constructed by Kozlovski, Shen, and van Strien, and by using a covering lemma recently proved by Kahn and Lyubich, we prove that the Julia set of a polynomial is a Cantor set if and only if each component of the filledin Julia set containing critical points is aperiodic. This result was a conjecture raised by Branner and Hubbard in 1992.

Abstract:We give an example of a function $f$ non-vanishing in the closed bidisk and the affine polynomial minimizing the norm of $1-pf$ in the Hardy space of the bidisk among all affine polynomials $p$. We show that this polynomial vanishes inside the bidisk. This provides a counterexample to the weakest form of a conjecture due to Shanks that has been open since 1980, with applications that arose from digital filter design. This counterexample has a simple form and follows naturally from [7], where the phenomenon of zeros seeping into the unit disk was already observed for similar minimization problems in one variable.

Abstract:Following the work of the first and last authors [2], we further analyze the structure of a zero set of a left ideal in the ring of central polynomials over the quaternion algebra H. We describe the "algebraic hull" of a point in H^n and prove it is a product of spheres. Using this description we give a new proof to a conjecture of Gori, Sarfatti and Vlacci. We also show that the main result of [2] does not extend to general division algebras.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{N} \neq \{0\}$ be a fixed set of integers, closed under multiplication, closed under negation, or containing $\{\pm 1\}$. We prove that any zero of a polynomial in $\mathbf{Z}[X]$ whose coefficients lie in $\mathcal{N}$ can be approximated in $\mathbf{C}$ to arbitrary precision by a zero of a polynomial in $\mathbf{Z}[X]$ with square discriminant whose coefficients also lie in $\mathcal{N}$. Hence the topology of the closure in $\mathbf{C}$ of the set of zeros of all such polynomials is insensitive to the discriminant being a square, in contrast to the Galois groups of the polynomials.

Abstract:Assuming an integral quadratic polynomial with nonsingular quadratic part has a nontrivial zero on an integer lattice outside of a union of finite-index sublattices, we prove that there exists such a zero of bounded norm and provide an explicit bound. This is a contribution related to the celebrated theorem of Cassels on small-height zeros of quadratic forms, which builds on some previous work in this area. We also demonstrate an application of these results to the problem of effective distribution of angles between vectors in the integer lattice.

Abstract:In 2016, Fei \cite{fei2016application} established a bound on the Siegel zeros for real primitive Dirichlet characters modulo $q$, assuming the weak Hardy-Littlewood conjecture. Building on Fei's work, Jia \cite{jia2022conditional} demonstrated the same bound using a stronger version of the Hardy-Littlewood conjecture. In this paper, we present a slightly simplified approach to reprove their results.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a diagonal cubic form over $\mathbb{Z}$ in $6$ variables. From the dual variety in the delta method of Duke--Friedlander--Iwaniec and Heath-Brown, we unconditionally extract a weighted count of certain special integral zeros of $F$ in regions of diameter $X \to \infty$. Heath-Brown did the same in $4$ variables, but our analysis differs and captures some novel features. We also put forth an axiomatic framework for more general $F$.

Abstract:We give a revised version of Schmidt's treatment of forms in many variables, which allows us to prove a Hasse principle under more lenient conditions on the number of variables than what had previously been thought possible with these methods. Our results are generally comparable with recent advances in the field and supersede them in a number of cases.

Abstract:We give a description of the intersection of the zero set with the unit sphere of a zero-free polynomial in the unit ball of $\mathbb{C}^n$. This description leads to the formulation of a conjecture regarding the characterization of polynomials that are cyclic in Dirichlet-type spaces in the unit ball of $\mathbb{C}^n$. Furthermore, we answer partially ascertaining whether an arbitrary polynomial is not cyclic.

Abstract:This work studies optimal polynomial approximants (OPAs) in the classical Hardy spaces on the unit disk, $H^p$ ($1 < p < \infty$). For fixed $f\in H^p$ and $n\in\mathbb{N}$, the OPA of degree $n$ associated to $f$ is the polynomial which minimizes the quantity $\|qf-1\|_p$ over all complex polynomials $q$ of degree less than or equal to $n$. We begin with some examples which illustrate, when $p\neq2$, how the Banach space geometry makes these problems interesting. We then weave through various results concerning limits and roots of these polynomials, including results which show that OPAs can be witnessed as solutions of certain fixed point problems. Finally, using duality arguments, we provide several bounds concerning the error incurred in the OPA approximation.

Abstract:Let $\mathbb{F}$ be a field, and consider the hypercube $\{ 0, 1 \}^{n}$ in $\mathbb{F}^{n}$. Sziklai and Weiner (Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 2022) showed that if a polynomial $P ( X_{1}, \dots, X_{n} ) \in \mathbb{F}[ X_{1}, \dots, X_{n}]$ vanishes on every point of the hypercube $\{0,1\}^{n}$ except those with at most $r$ many ones then the degree of the polynomial will be at least $n-r$. This is a generalization of Alon and Füredi's fundamental result (European Journal of Combinatorics 1993) about polynomials vanishing on every point of the hypercube except at the origin (point with all zero coordinates). Sziklai and Weiner proved their interesting result using Möbius inversion formula and the Zeilberger method for proving binomial equalities. In this short note, we show that a stronger version of Sziklai and Weiner's result can be derived directly from Alon and Füredi's result.

Abstract:Shapley operators of undiscounted zero-sum two-player games are order-preserving maps that commute with the addition of a constant. We characterize the fixed point sets of Shapley operators, in finite dimension (i.e., for games with a finite state space). Some of these characterizations are of a lattice theoretical nature, whereas some other rely on metric or tropical geometry. More precisely, we show that fixed point sets of Shapley operators are special instances of hyperconvex spaces: they are sup-norm non-expansive retracts of $\R^n$, and also lattices in the induced partial order. Moreover, they retain properties of convex sets, with a notion of ``convex hull'' defined only up to isomorphism. This provides an effective construction of the injective hull or tight span, in the case of additive cones. For deterministic games with finite action spaces, these fixed point sets are supports of polyhedral complexes, with a cell decomposition attached to stationary strategies of the players, in which each cell is an alcoved polyhedron of $A_n$ type. We finally provide an explicit local representation of the latter fixed point sets, as polyhedral fans canonically associated to lattices included in the Boolean hypercube.

Abstract:Let R be the ring of polynomials in n central variables over the real quaternion algebra H, and let I be a left ideal in R. We prove that if a polynomial p in R vanishes at all the common zeros of I in H^n with commuting coordinates, then as a slice regular quaternionic function, p vanishes at all common zeros of I in H^n. This confirms a conjecture of Gori, Sarfatti and Vlacci, who settled the two dimensional case.

Abstract:Let s be a special point on a Shimura variety, and x a pre-image of s in a fixed fundamental set of the associated Hermitian symmetric domain. We prove that the height of x is polynomially bounded with respect to the discriminant of the centre of the endomorphism ring of the corresponding Z-Hodge structure. Our bound is the final step needed to complete a proof of the Andre-Oort conjecture under the conjectural lower bounds for the sizes of Galois orbits of special points, using a strategy of Pila and Zannier.

Abstract:Given a polynomial $p$ with no zeros in the polydisk, or equivalently the poly-upper half-plane, we study the problem of determining the ideal of polynomials $q$ with the property that the rational function $q/p$ is bounded near a boundary zero of $p$. We give a complete description of this ideal of numerators in the case where the zero set of $p$ is smooth and satisfies a non-degeneracy condition. In three variables, we give a description of the ideal in terms of an integral closure when $p$ has an isolated zero on the distinguished boundary. Constructions of multivariate stable polynomials are presented to illustrate sharpness of our results and necessity of our assumptions.

Abstract:By adopting a new approach to the analysis of the density of p-adic solutions arising in applications of the circle method, we show that under modest conditions the existence of non-trivial p-adic solutions suffices to establish positivity of the singular series. This improves on earlier approaches due to Davenport, Schmidt and others, and allows us to establish an asymptotic formula for the number of simultaneous zeros of non-singular pairs of cubic forms in at least 131 variables. As a by-product, we obtain a version of Hensel's Lemma for linear spaces.
