Abstract:By using the matrix formulation of the two-step approach to distributions of patterns in random sequences, recurrence and explicit formulas for the generating functions of successions in random permutations of arbitrary multisets are derived. Explicit formulas for the mean and variance are also obtained.

Abstract:By using the matrix formulation of the two-step approach to the distributions of runs, a recursive relation and an explicit expression are derived for the generating function of the joint distribution of rises and falls for multivariate random sequences in terms of generating functions of individual letters, from which the generating functions of the joint distribution of rises, falls, and number of runs are obtained. An explicit formula for the joint distribution of rises and falls with arbitrary specification is also obtained.

Abstract:The motivation of this paper is to investigate the joint distribution of succession and Eulerian statistics. We first investigate the enumerators for the joint distribution of descents, big ascents and successions over all permutations in the symmetric group. As an generalization a result of Diaconis-Evans-Graham (Adv. in Appl. Math., 61 (2014), 102-124), we show that two triple set-valued statistics of permutations are equidistributed on symmetric groups. We then introduce the definition of proper left-to-right minimum, and discover that the joint distribution of the succession and proper left-to-right minimum statistics over permutations is a symmetric distribution. In the final part, we discuss the relationship between the fix and cyc (p,q)-Eulerian polynomials and the joint distribution of succession and Eulerian-type statistics. In particular, we give a concise derivation of the generating function for a six-variable Eulerian polynomials.

Abstract:The distributions of the $m$-th longest runs of multivariate random sequences are considered. For random sequences made up of $k$ kinds of letters, the lengths of the runs are sorted in two ways to give two definitions of run length ordering. In one definition, the lengths of the runs are sorted separately for each letter type. In the second definition, the lengths of all the runs are sorted together. Exact formulas are developed for the distributions of the m-th longest runs for both definitions. The derivations are based on a two-step method that is applicable to various other runs-related distributions, such as joint distributions of several letter types and multiple run lengths of a single letter type.

Abstract:We consider multifold convolutions of a combinatorial sequence $(a_n)_{n=0}^{\infty}$: namely, for each $k \in \mathbb{N}$ the $k$-fold convolution is $\mathcal{M}^{(k)}_n(\boldsymbol{a}) = \sum_{j_1+\dots+j_k=n} a_{j_1} \cdots a_{j_k}$. Let $C_n$ be the Catalan numbers, and let $B_n$ be the central binomial coefficients. Then for random Dyck paths or simple random walk bridges, the multifold convolutions give moments of returns to the origin, using the stars-and-bars problem. There are well-known explicit formulas for the multifold convolutions of $C_n$ and $B_n$. But even for combinatorial sequences $B_n^2$ and $B_n^3$, one may determine asymptotics of multifold convolutions for large $n$. We also discuss large deviations.

Joint distributions of statistics over permutations avoiding two patterns of length 3

Abstract:Finding distributions of permutation statistics over pattern-avoiding classes of permutations attracted much attention in the literature. In particular, Bukata et al. found distributions of ascents and descents on permutations avoiding any two patterns of length 3. In this paper, we generalize these results in two different ways: we find explicit formulas for the joint distribution of six statistics (asc, des, lrmax, lrmin, rlmax, rlmin), and also explicit formulas for the joint distribution of four statistics (asc, des, MNA, MND) on these permutations in all cases. The latter result also extends the recent studies by Kitaev and Zhang of the statistics MNA and MND (related to non-overlapping occurrences of ascents and descents) on stack-sortable permutations. All multivariate generating functions in our paper are rational, and we provide combinatorial proofs of five equidistribution results that can be derived from the generating functions.

Abstract:The main theorem of this paper establishes a uniform syndeticity result concerning the multiple recurrence of measure-preserving actions on probability spaces. More precisely, for any integers and any , we prove the existence of and (dependent only on d, l, and ) such that the following holds: Consider a solvable group of derived length l, a probability space , and d pairwise commuting measure-preserving -actions on . Let E be a measurable set in X with . Then, K many (left) translates of cover . This result extends and refines uniformity results by Furstenberg and Katznelson. As a combinatorial application, we obtain the following uniformity result. For any integers and any , there are and (dependent only on d, l, and ) such that for all finite solvable groups G of derived length l and any subset with (where m is the uniform measure on G), we have that K-many (left) translates of cover G. The proof of our main result is a consequence of an ultralimit version of Austin's amenable ergodic Szeméredi theorem.

Abstract:This paper introduces the concept of a generating set for stochastic matrices -- a subset of matrices whose repeated composition generates the entire set. Understanding such generating sets requires specifying the "indivisible elements" and "building blocks" within the set, which serve as fundamental components of the generation process. Expanding upon prior studies, we develop a framework that formalizes divisibility in the context of stochastic matrices. We provide a sufficient condition for divisibility that is shown to be necessary in dimension $n=3$, while for $n=2$, all stochastic matrices are shown to be divisible. Using these results, we construct generating sets for dimensions $2$ and $3$ by specifying the indivisible elements, and, importantly, we give an upper bound for the number of factors required from the generating set to produce the entire semigroup.

Abstract:Multidimensional record patterns are random sets of lattice points defined by means of a recursive stochastic construction. The patterns thus generated owe their richness to the fact that the construction is not based on a total order, except in one dimension, where usual records in sequences of independent random variables are recovered. We derive many exact results on the statistics of multidimensional record patterns on finite samples drawn on hypercubic lattices in any dimension $D$. The most detailed analysis concerns the two-dimensional situation, where we also investigate the distribution of the landing position of the record point which is closest to the origin. Asymptotic expressions for the full distribution and the moments of the number of records on large hypercubic samples are also obtained. The latter distribution is related to that of the largest of $D$ standard Gaussian variables.

On (joint) equidistributions of mesh patterns 123 and 132 with symmetric shadings

Abstract:A notable problem within permutation patterns that has attracted considerable attention in literature since 1973 is the search for a bijective proof demonstrating that 123-avoiding and 132-avoiding permutations are equinumerous, both counted by the Catalan numbers. Despite this equivalence, the distributions of occurrences of the patterns 123 and 132 are distinct. When considering 123 and 132 as mesh patterns and selectively shading boxes, similar scenarios arise, even when avoidance is defined by the Bell numbers or other sequences, rather than the Catalan numbers. However, computer experiments suggest that mesh patterns 123 and 132 may indeed be equidistributed. Furthermore, by considering symmetric shadings relative to the anti-diagonal, a maximum of 93 such equidistributed pairs can potentially exist. This paper establishes 75 such equidistributions, leaving the justification of the remaining cases as open problems. As a by-product, we also prove 36 relevant non-symmetric equidistributions. All our proofs are bijective and involve swapping occurrences of the patterns in question, thereby demonstrating their joint equidistribution. Our findings are a continuation of the systematic study of distributions of short-length mesh patterns initiated by Kitaev and Zhang in 2019.

Abstract:We obtain the asymptotic behaviour of the longest increasing/non-decreasing subsequences in a random uniform multiset permutation in which each element in {1,...,n} occurs k times, where k may depend on n. This generalizes the famous Ulam-Hammersley problem of the case k=1. The proof relies on poissonization and a connection with variants of the Hammersley-Aldous-Diaconis particle system.

Abstract:We consider the distributions of the lengths of the longest weakly increasing and strongly decreasing subsequences in words of length N from an alphabet of k letters. We find Toeplitz determinant representations for the exponential generating functions (on N) of these distribution functions and show that they are expressible in terms of solutions of Painlevé V equations. We show further that in the weakly increasing case the generating function gives the distribution of the smallest eigenvalue in the k x k Laguerre random matrix ensemble and that the distribution itself has, after centering and normalizing, an N -> infinity limit which is equal to the distribution function for the largest eigenvalue in the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble of k x k hermitian matrices of trace zero.

On multiplicative recurrence along linear patterns

Abstract:In a recent article, Donoso, Le, Moreira and Sun studied sets of recurrence for actions of the multiplicative semigroup $(\mathbb{N}, \times)$ and provided some sufficient conditions for sets of the form $S=\{(an+b)/(cn+d) \colon n \in \mathbb{N} \}$ to be sets of recurrence for such actions. A necessary condition for $S$ to be a set of multiplicative recurrence is that for every completely multiplicative function $f$ taking values on the unit circle, we have that $\liminf_{n \to \infty} |f(an+b)-f(cn+d)|=0.$ In this article, we fully characterize the integer quadruples $(a,b,c,d)$ which satisfy the latter property. Our result generalizes a result of Klurman and Mangerel concerning the pair $(n,n+1)$, as well as some results of Donoso, Le, Moreira and Sun. In addition, we prove that, under the same conditions on $(a,b,c,d)$, the set $S$ is a set of recurrence for finitely generated actions of $(\mathbb{N}, \times)$.

Abstract:In the paper, multivariate probability distributions are considered that are representable as scale mixtures of multivariate stable distributions. Multivariate analogs of the Mittag–Leffler distribution are introduced. Some properties of these distributions are discussed. The main focus is on the representations of the corresponding random vectors as products of independent random variables and vectors. In these products, relations are traced of the distributions of the involved terms with popular probability distributions. As examples of distributions of the class of scale mixtures of multivariate stable distributions, multivariate generalized Linnik distributions and multivariate generalized Mittag–Leffler distributions are considered in detail. Their relations with multivariate ‘ordinary’ Linnik distributions, multivariate normal, stable and Laplace laws as well as with univariate Mittag–Leffler and generalized Mittag–Leffler distributions are discussed. Limit theorems are proved presenting necessary and sufficient conditions for the convergence of the distributions of random sequences with independent random indices (including sums of a random number of random vectors and multivariate statistics constructed from samples with random sizes) to scale mixtures of multivariate elliptically contoured stable distributions. The property of scale-mixed multivariate elliptically contoured stable distributions to be both scale mixtures of a non-trivial multivariate stable distribution and a normal scale mixture is used to obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the convergence of the distributions of random sums of random vectors with covariance matrices to the multivariate generalized Linnik distribution.

Abstract:Distributions of triplets in some genetic sequences are examined and found to be well described by a two-parameter Markov process with a sparse transition matrix. The standard deviations of all the relevant parameters are not large, indicating that most sequences gather in a small region in the parameter space. Different sequences have very similar values of the entropy calculated directly from the data and the two parameters characterizing the Markov process fitting the sequence. No relevance with taxonomy or coding/noncoding is clearly observed.
Multislicing and effective equidistribution for random walks on some homogeneous spaces

Abstract:We consider a random walk on a homogeneous space $G/\Lambda$ where $G$ is $\mathrm{SO}(2,1)$ or $\mathrm{SO}(3,1)$ and $\Lambda$ is a lattice. The walk is driven by a probability measure $\mu$ on $G$ whose support generates a Zariski-dense subgroup. We show that for every starting point $x \in G/\Lambda$ which is not trapped in a finite $\mu$-invariant set, the $n$-step distribution $\mu^{*n}*\delta_{x}$ of the walk equidistributes toward the Haar measure. Moreover, under arithmetic assumptions on the pair $(\Lambda, \mu)$, we show the convergence occurs at an exponential rate, tempered by the obstructions that $x$ may be high in a cusp or close to a finite orbit. Our approach is substantially different from that of Benoist-Quint, whose equidistribution statements only hold in Cesàro average and are not quantitative, that of Bourgain-Furman-Lindenstrauss-Mozes concerning the torus case, and that of Lindenstrauss-Mohammadi-Wang and Yang about the analogous problem for unipotent flows. A key new feature of our proof is the use of a new phenomenon which we call multislicing. The latter is a generalization of the discretized projection theorems à la Bourgain and we believe it presents independent interest.

Abstract:Babson and Steingr\'ımsson introduced generalized permutation patterns and showed that most of the Mahonian statistics in the literature can be expressed by the combination of generalized pattern functions. Particularly, they defined a new Mahonian statistic in terms of generalized pattern functions, which is denoted $stat$. Recently, Amini investigated the equidistributions of these Mahonian statistics over sets of pattern avoiding permutations. Moreover, he posed several conjectures. In this paper, we construct a bijection from $S_n(213)$ to $S_n(231)$, which maps the statistic $(maj,stat)$ to the statistic $(stat,maj)$. This allows us to give solutions to some of Amini's conjectures.
