Abstract:Answering a question of A. V. Vasil'ev, we show that each finite symmetric (or alternating) group $H$ is a retract of any group containing $H$ as a verbally closed subgroup.

Abstract:In a recent paper by A. A. Klyachko, V. Y. Miroshnichenko, and A. Y. Olshanskii, it is proven that the center of any finite strongly verbally closed group is a direct factor. In this paper, we extend this result to the case of finite normal subgroups of any strongly verbally closed group. It follows that finitely generated nilpotent groups with nonabelian torsion subgroups are not strongly verbally closed.

Abstract:The assertion in the title implies that many interesting groups (e.g., all non-abelian braid groups or ${\bf SL}_{100}(\mathbb Z)$) are not strongly verbally closed, i.e., they embed into some finitely generated groups as verbally closed subgroups, which are not retracts.

Abstract:Let $\X$ be a class of finite groups closed under taking the subgroups, homomorphic images and extensions. By $\D_\X$ denote the class of finite groups $G$ in which every two $\X$-ma\-xi\-mal subgroups are conjugate. In the paper, the following statement is proven. Let $A$ be a normal subgroup of a finite group $G$. Then \centerline{$G\in\D_\X$ if and only if $A\in \D_\X$ and $G/A\in \D_\X$.} This statement implies that the $\X$-ma\-xi\-mal subgroups are conjugate if and only if the so called $\X$-sub\-ma\-xi\-mal subgroups are conjugate. Thus we obtain an affirmative solution to a problem posed by H.Wielandt in 1964.

Abstract:Ulam asked whether all Lie groups can be represented faithfully on a countable set. We establish a reduction of Ulam's problem to the case of simple Lie groups. In particular, we solve the problem for all solvable Lie groups and more generally Lie groups with a linear Levi component. It follows that every amenable locally compact second countable group acts faithfully on a countable set.

Abstract:We show that if $H \leq G$ is a closed amenable and cocompact subgroup of a unimodular locally compact group, then the reduced group C*-algebra of $G$ is not simple. Equivalently, there are unitary representations of $G$ that are weakly contained in the left-regular representation, but not weakly equivalent to it. We discuss applications of this result and pose the problem to construct non-discrete topologically simple groups with a cocompact amenable closed subgroup but without a Gelfand pair.

Abstract:Let H be a subgroup of a finite group G. If G contains a maximal subgroup M such that H is a maximal subgroup of M, then H is called a 2-maximal subgroup of the group G. A subgroup U of G is said to be a strictly 2-maximal subgroup of G if U is a 2-maximal subgroup of G and U is not a 2-maximal subgroup in any proper subgroup of G. We investigate finite groups with X-subnormal strictly 2-maximal subgroups for any subgroup-closed formation X In this group, any proper subgroup has a nilpotent X-residual. In more detail, we study the case where X = A1F for some subgroup-closed formation F and the case where X is a soluble saturated formation.

Abstract:A LAnKe (also known as a Lie algebra of the $n$th kind, or a Filippov algebra) is a vector space equipped with a skew-symmetric $n$-linear form that satisfies the generalized Jacobi identity. The symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_m$ acts on the multilinear part of the free LAnKe on $m=(n-1)k+1$ generators, where $k$ is the number of brackets. The corresponding representation was studied by Friedmann, Hanlon, Stanley and Wachs, who asked whether for $n \ge k$, its irreducible decomposition contains no summand whose Young diagram has at most $k-1$ columns. It is known that the answer is affirmative if $k \le 3$. In this paper, we show that the answer is affirmative for all $k$.

On retract rationality for finite connected group schemes

Abstract:In the present paper, we prove the retract rationality of the classifying spaces $BG$ for several types of finite connected group schemes $G$ over algebraically closed fields $k$ of positive characteristic $p>0$. In particular, we prove the retract rationality for the finite simple group schemes $G$ associated with the generalized Witt algebras in specific cases. To this end, we study the automorphism group schemes of the generalized Witt algebras and establish triangulations for them. Moreover, we extend the notion of Witt--Ree algebra to general base rings and discuss their properties.

We show that does not exceed . Moreover, the equality holds if and only if is birational to an abelian variety. We also show that an analogous result holds for groups of bimeromorphic automorphisms of compact Kähler spaces under some additional assumptions.

Abstract:We show that the rational subset membership problem in $G$ can be reduced to the submonoid membership problem in $G{\times}H$ where $H$ is virtually Abelian. We use this to show that there is no algorithm reducing submonoid membership to a finite index subgroup uniformly for all virtually nilpotent groups. We also provide evidence towards the existence of a group $G$ with a subgroup $H<G$ of index 2, such that the submonoid membership problem is decidable in $H$ but not in $G$.

Abstract:Let be a class of finite groups containing a group of even order and closed under subgroups, homomorphic images, and extensions. Then each finite group possesses a maximal -subgroup of odd index and the study of the subgroups can be reduced to the study of the so-called submaximal -subgroups of odd index in simple groups. We prove a theorem that deduces the description of submaximal -subgroups of odd index in an alternating group from the description of maximal -subgroups of odd index in the corresponding symmetric group. In consequence, we classify the submaximal soluble subgroups of odd index in alternating groups up to conjugacy.

Abstract:In this paper we consider Chevalley groups over commutative rings with~$1$, constructed by irreducible root systems of rank $>1$. We always suppose that for the systems $A_2, B_\ell, C_\ell, F_4, G_2$ our rings contain $1/2$ and for the system $G_2$ also $1/3$. Under these assumptions we prove that the central quotients of Chevalley groups are regularly bi-interpretable with the corresponding rings, the class of all central quotients of Chevalley groups of a given type is elementarily definable and even finitely axiomatizable (see Definition~2.2). The same holds for adjoint Chevalley groups and for bondedly generated Chevalley groups. We also give an example of Chevalley group with infinite center, which is not bi-interpretable with the corresponding ring and is elementarily equivalent to a group that is not a Chevalley group itself.
