Abstract:A dual Banach algebra is a Banach algebra which is a dual space, with the multiplication being separately weak$^*$-continuous. We show that given a unital dual Banach algebra $\mc A$, we can find a reflexive Banach space $E$, and an isometric, weak$^*$-weak$^*$-continuous homomorphism $\pi:\mc A\to\mc B(E)$ such that $\pi(\mc A)$ equals its own bicommutant.

Abstract:Our main result is that any topological algebra based on a Boolean space is the extended Stone dual space of a certain associated Boolean algebra with additional operations. A particular case of this result is that the profinite completion of any abstract algebra is the extended Stone dual space of the Boolean algebra of recognizable subsets of the abstract algebra endowed with certain residuation operations. These results identify a connection between topological algebra as applied in algebra and Stone duality as applied in logic, and show that the notion of recognition originating in computer science is intrinsic to profinite completion in mathematics in general. This connection underlies a number of recent results in automata theory including a generalization of Eilenberg-Reiterman theory for regular languages and a new notion of compact recognition applying beyond the setting of regular languages. The purpose of this paper is to give the underlying duality theoretic result in its general form. Further we illustrate the power of the result by providing a few applications in topological algebra and language theory. In particular, we give a simple proof of the fact that any topological algebra quotient of a profinite algebra which is again based on a Boolean space is in fact a profinite algebra and we derive the conditions dual to the ones of the original Eilenberg theorem in a fully modular manner. We cast our results in the setting of extended Priestley duality for distributive lattices with additional operations as some classes of languages of interest in automata fail to be closed under complementation.

Abstract:We verify that a large portion of the theory of complex operator spaces and operator algebras (as represented by the 2004 book by the author and Le Merdy for specificity) transfers to the real case. We point out some of the results that do not work in the real case. We also discuss how the theory and standard constructions interact with the complexification. For example, we develop the real case of the theory of operator space multipliers and the operator space centralizer algebra, and discuss how these topics connect with the complexification. This turns out to differ in some important details from the complex case. We also characterize real structure in complex operator spaces; and give `real' characterizations of some of the most important objects in the subject.

Abstract:We show that the Lipschitz‐free space with the Radon–Nikodým property and a Daugavet point recently constructed by Veeorg is in fact a dual space isomorphic to l1 . Furthermore, we answer an open problem from the literature by showing that there exists a superreflexive space, in the form of a renorming of l2 , with a Δ ‐point. Building on these two results, we are able to renorm every infinite‐dimensional Banach space to have a Δ ‐point. Next, we establish powerful relations between existence of Δ ‐points in Banach spaces and their duals. As an application, we obtain sharp results about the influence of Δ ‐points for the asymptotic geometry of Banach spaces. In addition, we prove that if X is a Banach space with a shrinking k ‐unconditional basis with k<2 , or if X is a Hahn–Banach smooth space with a dual satisfying the Kadets–Klee property, then X and its dual X∗ fail to contain Δ ‐points. In particular, we get that no Lipschitz‐free space with a Hahn–Banach smooth predual contains Δ ‐points. Finally, we present a purely metric characterization of the molecules in Lipschitz‐free spaces that are Δ ‐points, and we solve an open problem about representation of finitely supported Δ ‐points in Lipschitz‐free spaces.

Abstract:Given a Banach space. We show that its three times dual space can be written as a direct sum. Then being one of the sumands null is a necessary and sufficient condition for the dual space to be reflexive. We end with an application of this result to the known relationship between the reflexivity of a Banach space and that of its dual space.

Abstract:A pure topological characterization of primitive ideal spaces of separable nuclear C*-algebras is given. We show that a $T_0$-space $X$ is a primitive ideal space of a separable nuclear C*-algebra $A$ if and only if $X$ is point-complete second countable, and there is a continuous pseudo-open and pseudo-epimorphic map from a locally compact Polish space $P$ into $X$.

Abstract:Heinrich, Mankiewicz, Sims, and Yost proved that every separable subspace of a Banach space $Y$ is contained in a separable ideal in $Y$. We improve this result by replacing the term "ideal" with the term "almost isometric ideal". As a consequence of this we obtain, in terms of subspaces, characterizations of diameter 2 properties, the Daugavet property along with the properties of being an almost square space and an octahedral space.

Abstract:During the last decade the Subspace Theorem found several quite unexpected applications, mainly in the Diophantine Analysis and in the Transcendence Theory. Among the great variety of spectacular results, I have chosen several which are technically simpler and which allow one to appreciate how miraculously does the Subspace Theorem emerge in numerous situations, implying beautiful solutions to difficult problems hardly anybody hoped to solve so easily. The three main topics discussed in this article are: the work of Adamczewski and Bugeaud on complexity of algebraic numbers; the work of Corvaja and Zannier on Diophantine equations with power sums; the work of Corvaja and Zannier on integral points on curves and surfaces, and the subsequent development due to Levin and Autissier. In particular, we give a complete proof of the beautiful theorem of Levin and Autissier: an affine surface with 4 (or more) properly intersecting ample divisors at infinity cannot have a Zariski dense set of integral points.

Abstract:Let $ X $ and $ Y $ be Banach spaces. We provide the representation of the dual space of compact operators $ K(X, Y) $ as a subspace of bounded linear operators $ \mathcal{L}(X, Y) $. The main results are: (1) If $ Y $ is separable, then the dual forms of $ K(X, Y) $ can be represented by the integral operator and the elements of $ C[0, 1] $. (2) If $ X^{**} $ has the weak Radon-Nikodym property, then the dual forms of $ K(X, Y) $ can be represented by the trace of some tensor products.

Abstract:We study the problem of existence of preduals of locally convex Hausdorff spaces. We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a predual with certain properties of a bornological locally convex Hausdorff space $X$. Then we turn to the case that $X=\mathcal{F}(\Omega)$ is a space of scalar-valued functions on a non-empty set $\Omega$ and characterise those among them which admit a special predual, namely a strong linearisation, i.e. there are a locally convex Hausdorff space $Y$, a map $\delta\colon\Omega\to Y$ and a topological isomorphism $T\colon\mathcal{F}(\Omega)\to Y_{b}'$ such that $T(f)\circ \delta= f$ for all $f\in\mathcal{F}(\Omega)$.

On the property (C) of Corson and other sequential properties of Banach Spaces

Abstract:A well-known result of R. Pol states that a Banach space $X$ has property ($\mathcal{C}$) of Corson if and only if every point in the weak*-closure of any convex set $C \subseteq B_{X^*}$ is actually in the weak*-closure of a countable subset of $C$. Nevertheless, it is an open problem whether this is in turn equivalent to the countable tightness of $B_{X^*}$ with respect to the weak*-topology. Frankiewicz, Plebanek and Ryll-Nardzewski provided an affirmative answer under $\mathrm{MA}+\neg \mathrm{CH}$ for the class of $\mathcal{C}(K)$-spaces. In this article we provide a partial extension of this latter result by showing that under the Proper Forcing Axiom ($\mathrm{PFA}$) the following conditions are equivalent for an arbitrary Banach space $X$: 1) $X$ has property $\mathcal{E}'$; 2) $X$ has weak*-sequential dual ball; 3) $X$ has property ($\mathcal{C}$) of Corson; 4) $(B_{X^*},w^\ast)$ has countable tightness. This provides a partial extension of a former result of Arhangel'skii. In addition, we show that every Banach space with property $\mathcal{E}'$ has weak*-convex block compact dual ball.

Abstract:We exploit a new theory of duality transformations to construct dual representations of models incompatible with traditional duality transformations. Hence we obtain a solution to the long-standing problem of non-Abelian dualities that hinges on two key observations: (i) from the point of view of dualities, whether the group of symmetries of a model is or is not Abelian is unimportant, and (ii) the new theory of dualities that we exploit includes traditional duality transformations, but also introduces in a natural way more general transformations.

Between a Stone and a Hausdorff Space

Abstract:We consider the duality between General Relativity and the theory of Einstein algebras, in the extended setting where one permits non-Hausdorff manifolds. We show that the duality breaks down, and then go on to discuss a sense in which general relativity, formulated using non-Hausdorff manifolds, exhibits excess structure when compared to Einstein algebras. We discuss how these results bear on a class of algebraically-motivated deflationist views about spacetime ontology. We conclude with a conjecture concerning non-Hausdorff spacetimes with no bifurcate curves.

Abstract:The concept of $\ell_{\Phi}$-decomposition, extending the concept of $\ell_{p}$-decomposition of a Banach space, is presented and basic properties of Schauder-Orlicz decompositions and $\ell_{\Phi}$-decompositions are studied. We show that Schauder-Orlicz decompositions are orthogonal in a sense of Grinblyum-James and Singer. Simple constructions of $\ell_{p}$-decompositions and Schauder-Orlicz decompositions in $L_p$ are presented. We prove that in the class of spaces possessing pseudo-Daugavet property, which includes classical $L_p$, $1\leq p\neq 2$, and $C$, Schauder-Orlicz decompositions with at least one finite dimensional subspace do not exist. It follows that Kato theorem on similarity for sequences of projections [1] cannot be extended to spaces from this class. Moreover we show that Banach spaces, possessing Schauder-Orlicz decompositions with at least one finite dimensional subspace, do not have pseudo-Daugavet property. Thus for Banach spaces $X$ possessing Schauder-Orlicz decompositions we obtain the following characterization of pseudo-Daugavet property: $X$ has pseudo-Daugavet property if and only if there is no Schauder-Orlicz decomposition in $X$ with at least one finite dimensional subspace if and only if there is no Schauder-Orlicz decomposition in $X$, which is an FDD.

Non-commutative Stone duality: inverse semigroups, topological groupoids and C*-algebras

Abstract:We study a non-commutative generalization of Stone duality that connects a class of inverse semigroups, called Boolean inverse $\wedge$-semigroups, with a class of topological groupoids, called Hausdorff Boolean groupoids. Much of the paper is given over to showing that Boolean inverse $\wedge$-semigroups arise as completions of inverse semigroups we call pre-Boolean. An inverse $\wedge$-semigroup is pre-Boolean if and only if every tight filter is an ultrafilter, where the definition of a tight filter is obtained by combining work of both Exel and Lenz. A simple necessary condition for a semigroup to be pre-Boolean is derived and a variety of examples of inverse semigroups are shown to satisfy it. Thus the polycyclic inverse monoids, and certain Rees matrix semigroups over the polycyclics, are pre-Boolean and it is proved that the groups of units of their completions are precisely the Thompson-Higman groups $G_{n,r}$. The inverse semigroups arising from suitable directed graphs are also pre-Boolean and the topological groupoids arising from these graph inverse semigroups under our non-commutative Stone duality are the groupoids that arise from the Cuntz-Krieger $C^{\ast}$-algebras.

Abstract:Building on a recent construction of G. Plebanek and the third named author, it is shown that a complemented subspace of a Banach lattice need not be linearly isomorphic to a Banach lattice. This solves a long-standing open question in Banach lattice theory.

Abstract:We show the failure of a matricial version of Grothendieck's theorem for operator spaces, thereby resolving a long-standing open question in the field. Moreover, by showing that such a counterexample can occur in the simplest context of commutative $C^*$-algebras, we address some other open questions in operator algebras. Our constructions, completely explicit and fairly simple, are inspired by some techniques in quantum information theory.

Abstract:We describe the strong dual space of the space of holomorphic functions of several complex variables in a bounded domain with Lipschitz boundary and connected complement (as usual, is endowed with the topology of local uniform convergence in ). We identify the dual space with the closed subspace of the space of harmonic functions on the closed set , , whose elements vanish at the point at infinity and satisfy the Cauchy-Riemann tangential conditions on . In particular, we generalize classical Grothendieck-Köthe-Sebastião e Silva duality for holomorphic functions of one variable to the multivariate situation. We prove that the duality we produce holds if and only if the space of Sobolev-class holomorphic functions in is dense in . Bibliography: 35 titles.
