Abstract:Due to the limited driving range, inadequate charging facilities, and time-consuming recharging, the process of finding an optimal charging route for electric vehicles (EVs) differs from that of other vehicle types. The time and location of EV charging during a trip impact not only the individual EV's travel time but also the travel time of other EVs, due to the queuing that may arise at the charging station(s). This issue is at large seen as a significant constraint for uplifting EV sales in many countries. In this study, we present a novel Electric Vehicle Route Planning problem, which involves finding the fastest route with recharging for an EV routing request. We model the problem as a new graph problem and present that the problem is NP-hard. We propose a novel two-phase algorithm to traverse the graph to find the best possible charging route for each EV. We also introduce the notion of `influence factor' to propose heuristics to find the best possible route for an EV with the minimum travel time that avoids using charging stations and time to recharge at those stations which can lead to better travel time for other EVs. The results show that our method can decrease total travel time of the EVs by 50\% in comparison with the state-of-the-art on a real dataset, where the benefit of our approach is more significant as the number of EVs on the road increases.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper proposes a new approach to solve the electric vehicle (EV) charging route planning problem. Due to the limited range of electric vehicles, insufficient charging facilities, and long charging time, the optimal charging route planning for electric vehicles is different from traditional vehicles. The charging time and location not only affect the travel time of individual electric vehicles but also may cause queues at charging stations, increasing the travel time for other electric vehicles, which greatly hinders the promotion of electric vehicles in many countries. In this study, the authors propose a new electric vehicle route planning problem with the goal of finding the fastest route that includes charging. They model the problem as a new graph problem and prove its NP-hardness. To solve this problem, the paper proposes a two-stage algorithm to traverse the graph and find the optimal charging route for each electric vehicle. The concept of "influence factor" is introduced to find the route with the minimum travel time and to minimize the use of charging stations and charging at these stations, thus reducing the travel time for other electric vehicles. The experimental results show that compared to existing best methods, their method can reduce the total travel time of electric vehicles by 50%, and this advantage becomes more significant as the number of electric vehicles on the road increases. Existing research has two shortcomings: firstly, it cannot find the charging routes that consider the minimum travel time with multiple and potentially partial charging; secondly, it does not attempt to reduce congestion at charging stations. The goal of this paper is to find the optimal charging routes for each electric vehicle while avoiding the congested charging stations that can be better utilized by other electric vehicles, thus improving the travel time for all electric vehicles.
