Abstract:In this preprint we consider fully nonlinear equations in thin domains with oblique boundary condition, finding some new phenomena, in particular the limit equation contains "new terms" of the second, first and zeroth order which don't have an equivalent in the Neumann case treated in our previous work <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2404.19577" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2404.19577">arXiv:2404.19577</a>. The classical laplacian problem with Neumann boundary condition, goes back to the well known result of Hale and Raugel (1992).

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to prove the existence of generalized variational solutions for nonlinear Dirichlet problems driven by anisotropic and Finsler Laplacian competing operators. The main difficulty consists in the lack of ellipticity and monotonicity in the principal part of the equations. This difficulty is overcome by developing a Galerkin-type procedure.

Abstract:We present a derivation and implementation of asymptotic boundary conditions to be imposed on "artificial" boundaries for nonlinear elliptic boundary value problems on semi-infinite "cylindrical" domains. A general theory developed by the authors in [11] is applied to establish the existence of exact boundary conditions and then to obtain useful approximations to them. The derivation is based on the Laplace transform solution of the linearized problem at infinity. We discuss the incorporation of the asymptotic boundary conditions into a finite-difference scheme and present the results of numerical experiments on the solution of the Bratu problem in a two-dimensional stepped channel. We also touch on certain problems concerning the existence of solutions of this problem on infinite domains and conjecture on the behavior of the critical parameter value with respect to changes in the domain. Some numerical evidence supporting the conjecture is given.

Abstract:The Dirichlet-Neumann method is a common domain decomposition method for nonoverlapping domain decomposition and the method has been studied extensively for linear elliptic equations. However, for nonlinear elliptic equations, there are only convergence results for some specific cases in one spatial dimension. The aim of this manuscript is therefore to prove that the Dirichlet-Neumann method converges for a class of semilinear elliptic equations on Lipschitz continuous domains in two and three spatial dimensions. This is achieved by first proving a new result on the convergence of nonlinear iterations in Hilbert spaces and then applying this result to the Steklov-Poincaré formulation of the Dirichlet-Neumann method.

Elliptic and parabolic problems in thin domains with doubly weak oscillatory boundary

Abstract:In this work we consider higher dimensional thin domains with the property that both boundaries, bottom and top, present oscillations of weak type. We consider the Laplace operator with Neumann boundary conditions and analyze the behavior of the solutions as the thin domains shrinks to a fixed domain $\omega\subset \R^n$. We obtain the convergence of the resolvent of the elliptic operators in the sense of compact convergence of operators, which in particular implies the convergence of the spectra. This convergence of the resolvent operators will allow us to conclude the global dynamics, in terms of the global attractors of a reaction diffusion equation in the thin domains. In particular, we show the upper semicontinuity of the attractors and stationary states. An important case treated is the case of a quasiperiodic situation, where the bottom and top oscillations are periodic but with period rationally independent.

Abstract:We study existence and asymptotic behavior of radial positive solutions of some fully nonlinear equations involving Pucci's extremal operators in dimension two. In particular we prove the existence of a positive solution of a fully nonlinear version of the Liouville equation in the plane. Moreover for the $\mathcal{M}^-_{\lambda,\Lambda}$ operator, we show the existence of a critical exponent and give bounds for it.

Abstract:In this paper we revisit the classical Cauchy problem for Laplace's equation as well as two further related problems in the light of regularisation of this highly ill-conditioned problem by replacing integer derivatives with fractional ones. We do so in the spirit of quasi reversibility, replacing a classically severely ill-posed PDE problem by a nearby well-posed or only mildly ill-posed one. In order to be able to make use of the known stabilising effect of one-dimensional fractional derivatives of Abel type we work in a particular rectangular (in higher space dimensions cylindrical) geometry. We start with the plain Cauchy problem of reconstructing the values of a harmonic function inside this domain from its Dirichlet and Neumann trace on part of the boundary (the cylinder base) and explore three options for doing this with fractional operators. The two other related problems are the recovery of a free boundary and then this together with simultaneous recovery of the impedance function in the boundary condition. Our main technique here will be Newton's method. The paper contains numerical reconstructions and convergence results for the devised methods.

Abstract:We introduce a new class of quasilinear nonlocal operators and study equations involving these operators. The operators are degenerate elliptic and may have arbitrary growth in the gradient. Included are new nonlocal versions of p-Laplace, $\infty$-Laplace, mean curvature of graph, and even strongly degenerate operators, in addition to some nonlocal quasilinear operators appearing in the existing literature. Our main results are comparison, uniqueness, and existence results for viscosity solutions of linear and fully nonlinear equations involving these operators. Because of the structure of our operators, especially the existence proof is highly non-trivial and non-standard. We also identify the conditions under which the nonlocal operators converge to local quasilinear operators, and show that the solutions of the corresponding nonlocal equations converge to the solutions of the local limit equations. Finally, we give a (formal) stochastic representation formula for the solutions and provide many examples.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the singular boundary value problem where is a parameter, and is the highly degenerate and h-homogeneous operator related to the infinity Laplacian. The nonlinear term is a continuous function and may exhibit singularity at . We establish the comparison principle by the double variables method for the general equation under some conditions on the term . Then, we establish the existence of viscosity solutions to the singular boundary value problem in a bounded domain based on Perron's method and the comparison principle. Finally, we obtain the existence result in the entire Euclidean space by the approximation procedure. In this procedure, we also establish the local Lipschitz continuity of the viscosity solution.

Abstract:In these notes we propose and analyze an inertial type method for obtaining stable approximate solutions to nonlinear ill-posed operator equations. The method is based on the Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) iteration. The main obtained results are: monotonicity and convergence for exact data, stability and semi-convergence for noisy data. Regarding numerical experiments we consider: i) a parameter identification problem in elliptic PDEs, ii) a parameter identification problem in machine learning; the computational efficiency of the proposed method is compared with canonical implementations of the LM method.

Abstract:In this paper we establish existence, uniqueness, and boundedness results for an elliptic variational inequality coupled with a nonlinear ordinary differential equation. Under the general framework, we present a new application modelling the antiplane shear deformation of a static frictional adhesive contact problem. The adhesion process has been extensively studied, but it is usual to assume a priori that the intensity of adhesion is bounded by introducing truncation operators. The aim of this article is to remove this restriction. The proof is based on an iterative approximation scheme showing that the problem has a unique solution. A key ingredient is finding uniform a priori bounds for each iterate. These are obtained by adapting versions of the Moser iteration to our system of equations.

Elliptic Equations in Weak Oscillatory Thin Domains: Beyond Periodicity with Boundary-Concentrated Reaction Terms

Abstract:In this paper we analyze the limit behavior of a family of solutions of the Laplace operator with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions, set in a two-dimensional thin domain which presents weak oscillations on both boundaries and with terms concentrated in a narrow oscillating neighborhood of the top boundary. The aim of this problem is to study the behavior of the solutions as the thin domain presents oscillatory behaviors beyond the classical periodic assumptions,including scenarios like quasiperiodic or almost-periodic oscillations. We then prove that the family of solutions converges to the solution of a 1 dimensional limit equation capturing the geometry and oscillatory behavior of boundary of the domain and the narrow strip where the concentration terms take place. In addition, we include a series of numerical experiments illustrating the theoretical results obtained in the quasiperiodic context.

Abstract:We investigate the existence, uniqueness, and $L^1$-contractivity of weak solutions to a porous medium equation with fractional diffusion on an evolving hypersurface. To settle the existence, we reformulate the equation as a local problem on a semi-infinite cylinder, regularise the porous medium nonlinearity and truncate the cylinder. Then we pass to the limit first in the truncation parameter and then in the nonlinearity, and the identification of limits is done using the theory of subdifferentials of convex functionals. In order to facilitate all of this, we begin by studying (in the setting of closed Riemannian manifolds and Sobolev spaces) the fractional Laplace--Beltrami operator which can be seen as the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map of a harmonic extension problem. A truncated harmonic extension problem will also be examined and convergence results to the solution of the harmonic extension will be given. For a technical reason, we will also consider some related extension problems on evolving hypersurfaces which will provide us with the minimal time regularity required on the harmonic extensions in order to properly formulate the moving domain problem. This functional analytic theory is of course independent of the fractional porous medium equation and will be of use generally in the analysis of fractional elliptic and parabolic problems on manifolds.
