Abstract:Journal of Hyperbolic Differential Equations, Volume 20, Issue 04, Page 853-902, December 2023. We investigate the asymptotic stability of solutions to the characteristic initial value problem for the Einstein (massless) scalar field system with a positive cosmological constant. We prescribe spherically symmetric initial data on a future null cone with a wider range of decaying profiles than previously considered. New estimates are then derived in order to prove that, for small data, the system has a unique global classical solution. We also show that the solution decays exponentially in (Bondi) time and that the radial decay is essentially polynomial, although containing logarithmic factors in some special cases. This improved asymptotic analysis allows us to show that, under appropriate and natural decaying conditions on the initial data, the future asymptotic solution is differentiable, up to and including spatial null-infinity, and approaches the de Sitter solution, uniformly, in a neighborhood of infinity. Moreover, we analyze the decay of derivatives of the solution up to second order showing the (uniform) [math]-asymptotic stability of the de Sitter attractor in this setting. This corresponds to a surprisingly strong realization of the cosmic no-hair conjecture.

Abstract:We prove a semi-global gauge-invariant estimate for the solutions of the characteristic initial value problem associated with the coupled Einstein-Yang-Mills equations. In particular, we prove the existence of \textit{a} future development of regular initial data on a pair of incoming and outgoing null hypersurfaces emanating from a spacelike topological $2$-sphere. This marks the first study of the characteristic initial value problem of Einstein's equations with a non-linear source.

Abstract:By using of the Euler-Lagrange equations, we find a static spherically symmetric solution in the Einstein-aether theory with the coupling constants restricted. The solution is similar to the Reissner-Nordstrom solution in that it has an inner Cauchy horizon and an outer black hole event horizon. But a remarkable difference from the Reissner-Nordstrom solution is that it is not asymptotically flat but approaches a two dimensional sphere. The resulting electric potential is regular in the whole spacetime except for the curvature singularity. On the other hand, the magnetic potential is divergent on both Cauchy horizon and the outer event horizon.

Abstract:Inspired by interaction of gravitational waves and dark matters, we study the Bondi-Sachs formalism for Einstein massless scalar field with zero cosmological constant. We provide asymptotic expansions for the Bondi-Sachs metrics as well as the scalar fields and prove the peeling property. We also prove the positivity of the Bondi energy-momentum under condition $c=d=0$ at some retarded time $u_0$. This condition ensures that asymptotically null hypersurfaces near $u=u_0$ are asymptotically null initial data sets of order 2 and the positive energy theorem for null infinity can be applied.

Abstract:Choptuik's critical phenomena in general relativity is revisited in the affine-null metric formulation of Einstein's equations for a massless scalar field in spherical symmetry. Numerical solutions are obtained by evolution of initial data using pseudospectral methods. The underlying system consists of differential equations along the outgoing null rays which can be solved in sequential form. A new two-parameter family of initial data is presented for which these equations can be integrated analytically. Specific choices of the initial data parameters correspond to either an asymptotically flat null cone, a black hole event horizon or the singular interior of a black hole. Our main focus is on the interior features of a black hole, for which the affine-null system is especially well adapted. We present both analytic and numerical results describing the geometric properties of the apparent horizon and final singularity. Using a regridding technique for the affine parameter, numerical evolution of initially asymptotically flat supercritical data can be continued inside the event horizon and track the apparent horizon up to the formation of the final singularity. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.110.044061 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:Starting from Post-Newtonian predictions for a system of $N$ infalling masses from the infinite past, we formulate and solve a scattering problem for the system of linearised gravity around Schwarzschild as introduced in [DHR19]. The scattering data are posed on a null hypersurface $\mathcal C$ emanating from a section of past null infinity $\mathcal I^-$, and on the part of $\mathcal I^-$ that lies to the future of this section: Along $\mathcal C$, we implement the Post-Newtonian theory-inspired hypothesis that the gauge-invariant components of the Weyl tensor $\alpha$ and $\underline{\alpha}$ (a.k.a. $\Psi_0$ and $\Psi_4$) decay like $r^{-3}$, $r^{-4}$, respectively, and we exclude incoming radiation from $\mathcal I^-$ by demanding the News function to vanish along $\mathcal I^-$.

Nonlinear stability of self-gravitating massive fields

Abstract:We consider the global evolution problem for Einstein's field equations in the near-Minkowski regime and study the long-time dynamics of a massive scalar field evolving under its own gravitational field. We establish the existence of a globally hyperbolic Cauchy development associated with any initial data set that is sufficiently close to a data set in Minkowski spacetime. In addition to applying to massive fields, our theory allows us to cover metrics with slow decay in space. The strategy of proof, proposed here and referred to as the Euclidean-Hyperboloidal Foliation Method, applies, more generally, to nonlinear systems of coupled wave and Klein-Gordon equations. It is based on a spacetime foliation defined by merging together asymptotically Euclidean hypersurfaces (covering spacelike infinity) and asymptotically hyperboloidal hypersurfaces (covering timelike infinity). A transition domain (reaching null infinity) limited by two asymptotic light cones is introduced in order to realize this merging. On the one hand, we exhibit a boost-rotation hierarchy property (as we call it) which is associated with Minkowski's Killing fields and is enjoyed by commutators of curved wave operators and, on the other hand, we exhibit a metric hierarchy property (as we call it) enjoyed by components of Einstein's field equations in frames associated with our Euclidean-hyperboloidal foliation. The core of the argument is, on the one hand, the derivation of novel integral and pointwise estimates which lead us to almost sharp decay properties (at timelike, null, and spacelike infinity) and, on the other hand, the control of the (quasi-linear and semi-linear) coupling between the geometric and matter parts of the Einstein equations.

Abstract:It has been known that if the initial data decay sufficiently fast at space infinity, then 1D Klein-Gordon equations with quadratic nonlinearity admit classical solutions up to time e^C/ϵ^2 while e^C/ϵ^2 is also the upper bound of the lifespan, where C>0 is some suitable constant and ϵ>0 is the size of the initial data. In this paper, we will focus on the 1D nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations with weakly decaying initial data. It is shown that if the H^s-Sobolev norm with (1+|x|)^1/2+ weight of the initial data is small, then the almost global solutions exist; if the initial H^s-Sobolev norm with (1+|x|)^1/2 weight is small, then for any M>0, the solutions exist on [0,ϵ^-M]. Our proof is based on the dispersive estimate with a suitable Z-norm and a delicate analysis on the phase function.
Simulations of gravitational collapse in null coordinates: II. Critical collapse of an axisymmetric scalar field

Abstract:We present the first numerical simulations in null coordinates of the collapse of nonspherical regular initial data to a black hole. We restrict to twist-free axisymmetry, and re-investigate the critical collapse of a non-spherical massless scalar field. We find that the Choptuik solution governing scalar field critical collapse in spherical symmetry persists when fine-tuning moderately non-spherical initial data to the threshold of black hole formation. The non-sphericity evolves as an almost-linear perturbation until the end of the self-similar phase, and becomes dominant only in the final collapse to a black hole. We compare with numerical results of Choptuik et al, Baumgarte, and Marouda et al, and conclude that they have been able to evolve somewhat more non-spherical solutions. Future work with larger deviations from spherical symmetry, and in particular vacuum collapse, will require a different choice of radial coordinate that allows the null generators to reconverge locally.

Abstract:We give an elementary new argument for global existence and exponential decay of solutions of quasilinear wave equations on Schwarzschild–de Sitter black hole backgrounds, for appropriately small initial data. The core of the argument is entirely local, based on time translation invariant energy estimates in spacetime slabs of fixed time length. Global existence then follows simply by iterating this local result in consecutive spacetime slabs. We infer that an appropriate future energy flux decays exponentially with respect to the energy flux of the initial data.

Abstract:We conduct numerical investigations on the critical collapse of spherically symmetric massless scalar fields in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime. Our primary focus is on the behavior of the critical amplitude under various initial configurations of the scalar field. Through our numerical results, we obtain a formula that determines the critical amplitude in terms of the cosmological constant : , where denotes the initial width of the scalar field, and is the initial position of the scalar field. Notably, we highlight that the slope of this linear relationship depends on the initial configuration of the scalar field.

Abstract:We study the dynamical spontaneous scalarization of charged black hole in asymptotically anti–de Sitter spacetimes in Einstein-Maxwell-scalar models. Including various nonminimal couplings between the scalar field and Maxwell field, an initial scalar-free black hole suffers tachyonic instability, and both the scalar field and the black hole irreducible mass grow exponentially at early times and saturate exponentially at late times. For fractional coupling, we find that, though there is negative energy distribution near the horizon, the black hole horizon area never decreases during the evolution. But when the parameters are large, the evolution end points of linearly unstable bald black holes will be spacetimes with a naked singularity such that the cosmic censorship is violated. The effects of the black hole charge, cosmological constant, and coupling strength on the dynamical scalarization process are studied in detail. The Case Against Smooth Null Infinity I: Heuristics and Counter-Examples

Abstract:This paper initiates a series of works dedicated to the rigorous study of the precise structure of gravitational radiation near infinity. We begin with a brief review of an argument due to Christodoulou [1] stating that Penrose's proposal of smooth conformal compactification of spacetime (or smooth null infinity) fails to accurately capture the structure of gravitational radiation emitted by $N$ infalling masses coming from past timelike infinity $i^-$. Modelling gravitational radiation by scalar radiation, we then take a first step towards a rigorous, fully general relativistic understanding of the non-smoothness of null infinity by constructing solutions to the spherically symmetric Einstein-Scalar field equations. Our constructions are motivated by Christodoulou's argument: They arise dynamically from polynomially decaying boundary data, $r\phi\sim t^{-1}$ as $t\to-\infty$, on a timelike hypersurface (to be thought of as the surface of a star) and the no incoming radiation condition, $r\partial_v\phi=0$, on past null infinity $\mathcal{I}^-$. We show that if the initial Hawking mass at $i^-$ is non-zero, then, in accordance with the non-smoothness of $\mathcal I^+$, $\partial_v(r\phi)$ satisfies the following asymptotic expansion near $\mathcal{I}^+$ for some constant $C\neq 0$: $\partial_v(r\phi)=Cr^{-3}\log r+\mathcal O(r^{-3})$. We also show that the same logarithmic terms appear in the linear theory, i.e. when considering the spherically symmetric linear wave equation on a fixed Schwarzschild background. As a corollary, we can apply our results to the scattering problem on Schwarzschild: Putting smooth, compactly supported scattering data for the wave equation on $\mathcal I^-$ and on $\mathcal H^-$, we find that the asymptotic expansion of $\partial_v(r\phi)$ near $\mathcal I^+$ generically contains logarithmic terms at second order, i.e. at order $r^{-4}\log r$.

A Proof of Weak Cosmic Censorship Conjecture for the Spherically Symmetric Einstein-Maxwell-Charged Scalar Field System

Abstract:Under spherical symmetry, we show that the weak cosmic censorship holds for the gravitational collapse of the Einstein-Maxwell-charged scalar field system. Namely, for this system, with generic initial data, the formed spacetime singularities are concealed inside black-hole regions. This generalizes Christodoulou's celebrated results to the charged case. Due to the presence of charge $Q$ and the complexification of the scalar field $\phi$, multiple delicate features and miraculous monotonic properties of the Einstein-(real) scalar field system are not present. We develop a systematical approach to incorporate $Q$ and the complex-valued $\phi$ into the integrated arguments. For instance, we discover a new path, employing the reduced mass ratio, to establish the sharp trapped surface formation criterion for the charged case. Due to the complex structure and the absence of translational symmetry of $\phi$, we also carry out detailed modified scale-critical BV area estimates with renormalized quantities to deal with $Q$ and $\phi$. We present a new $C^1$ extension criterion by utilizing the Doppler exponent to elucidate the blueshift effect, analogous to the role of integrating vorticity in the Beale-Kato-Madja breakdown criterion for incompressible fluids. Furthermore, by utilizing only double-null foliations, we establish the desired first and second instability theorems for the charged scenarios and identify generic initial conditions for the non-appearance of naked singularities. Our instability argument requires intricate generalizations of the treatment for the uncharged case via analyzing the precise contribution of the charged terms and its connection to the reduced mass ratio.

Geodesics and Global Properties of the Liouville Solution in General Relativity with a Scalar Field

Abstract:One parameter family of exact solutions in general relativity with a scalar field has been found using the Liouville metric. The scalar field potential is exponential and bounded from below. This model is interesting because, in particular, the solution corresponding to the naked singularity provides smooth extension of the Friedmann universe with accelerated expansion through the zero of the scale factor back in time. There is also nonstatic solution describing a black hole formation. All geodesics are found explicitly. Their analysis shows that the Liouville solutions are global ones: every geodesic is either continued to infinite value of the canonical parameter in both directions or ends up at the singularity at its finite value.

Abstract:We present some sufficient conditions for the global in time existence of solutions of the semilinear Klein-Gordon equation of the self-interacting scalar field with complex mass. The coefficients of the equation depend on spatial variables as well, that makes results applicable, in particular, to the spacetime with the time slices being Riemannian manifolds. The least lifespan estimate is given for the class of equations including the Higgs boson equation, which according to physics has a finite lifetime.

Abstract:We investigate all static spherically symmetric solutions in the context of general relativity surrounded by a minimally-coupled quintessence field, using dynamical system analysis. Applying the 1+1+2 formalism and introducing suitable normalized variables involving the Gaussian curvature, we were able to reformulate the field equations as first order differential equations. In the case of a massless canonical scalar field we recovered all known black hole results, such as the Fisher solution, and we found that apart from the Schwarzschild solution all other solutions are naked singularities. Additionally, we identified the symmetric phase space which corresponds to the white hole part of the solution and in the case of a phantom field, we were able to extract the conditions for the existence of wormholes and define all possible class of solutions such as Cold Black holes, singular spacetimes and wormholes like Ellis wormhole, for example. For an exponential potential, we found that the black hole solution which is asymptotically flat is unique and it is the Schwarzschild spacetime, while all other solutions are naked singularities. Furthermore, we found solutions connecting to a white hole through a maximum radius, and not a minimum radius (throat) such as wormhole solutions, therefore violating the flare-out condition. Finally, we have found a necessary and sufficient condition on the form of the potential to have an asymptotically AdS spacetime along with a necessary condition for the existence of asymptotically flat black holes.
