Abstract:In this article we explicitly determine the Weierstrass semigroup at any point and the full automorphism group of a known $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$-maximal curve $\mathcal{X}_3$ having the third largest genus. This curve arises as a Galois subcover of the Hermitian curve, and its uniqueness (with respect to the value of its genus) is a well-known open problem. Knowing the Weierstrass semigroups may provide a key towards solving this problem. Surprisingly enough $\mathcal{X}_3$ has many different types of Weierstrass semigroups and the set of its Weierstrass points is much richer than the set of $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$-rational points, as instead happens for all the known maximal curves where the Weierstrass points are known. We show that a similar exceptional behaviour does not occur in terms of automorphisms, that is, $\mathrm{Aut}(\mathcal{X}_3)$ is exactly the automorphism group inherited from the Hermitian curve, apart from small values of $q$.

Abstract:The problem of understanding whether two given function fields are isomorphic is well-known to be difficult, particularly when the aim is to prove that an isomorphism does not exist. In this paper we investigate a family of maximal function fields that arise as Galois subfields of the Hermitian function field. We compute the automorphism group, the Weierstrass semigroup at some special rational places and the isomorphism classes of such function fields. In this way, we show that often these function fields provide in fact examples of maximal function fields with the same genus, the same automorphism group, but that are not isomorphic.

Abstract:In the study of algebraic curves with many points over a finite field, a well known general problem is to understanding better the properties of $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$-maximal curves whose genera fall in the higher part of the spectrum of the genera of all $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$-maximal curves. This problem is still open for genera smaller than $ \lfloor \frac{1}{6}(q^2-q+4) \rfloor$. In this paper we consider the case of $\mathfrak{g}=\frac{1}{8}(q-1)^2$ where $q\equiv 1\pmod{4}$ and the curve is the Galois cover of the Hermitian curve w.r.t to a cyclic automorphism group of order $4$. Our contributions concern Frobenius embedding, Weierstrass semigroups and automorphism groups.

Abstract:Let $K=\mathbb{F}_q(C)$ be the global function field of rational functions over a smooth and projective curve $C$ defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. The ring of regular functions on $C-S$ where $S \neq \emptyset$ is any finite set of closed points on $C$ is a Dedekind domain $\mathcal{O}_S$ of $K$. For a semisimple $\mathcal{O}_S$-group $\underline{G}$ with a smooth fundamental group $\underline{F}$, we aim to describe both the set of genera of $\underline{G}$ and its principal genus (the latter if $\underline{G} \otimes_{\mathcal{O}_S} K$ is isotropic at $S$) in terms of abelian groups depending on $\mathcal{O}_S$ and $\underline{F}$ only. This leads to a necessary and sufficient condition for the Hasse local-global principle to hold for certain $\underline{G}$. We also use it to express the Tamagawa number $\tau(G)$ of a semisimple $K$-group $G$ by the Euler Poincaré invariant. This facilitates the computation of $\tau(G)$ for twisted $K$-groups.

Abstract:We determine the Weierstrass semigroup at one and two totally ramified places in a Kummer extension defined by the affine equation $y^{m}=\prod_{i=1}^{r} (x-\alpha_i)^{\lambda_i}$ over $K$, the algebraic closure of $\mathbb{F}_q$, where $\alpha_1, \dots, \alpha_r\in K$ are pairwise distinct elements, and $\gcd(m, \sum_{i=1}^{r}\lambda_i)=1$. For an arbitrary function field, from the knowledge of the minimal generating set of the Weierstrass semigroup at two rational places, the set of pure gaps is characterized. We apply these results to construct algebraic geometry codes over certain function fields with many rational places.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to ring theoretic properties and representations of the quantum Galilei group Fq(G) and its Hopf dual Uq(g) . We classify the primitive ideals and simple modules of Fq(G) and Uq(g) over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic. We determine their groups of automorphisms over a field of characteristic zero.

Abstract:Let $A$ be the ring of elements in an algebraic function field $K$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$ which are integral outside a fixed place $\infty$. In contrast to the classical modular group $SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$ and the Bianchi groups, the {\it Drinfeld modular group} $G=GL_2(A)$ is not finitely generated and its automorphism group $\mathrm{Aut}(G)$ is uncountable. Except for the simplest case $A=\mathbb{F}_q[t]$ not much is known about the generators of $\mathrm{Aut}(G)$ or even its structure. We find a set of generators of $\mathrm{Aut}(G)$ for a new case. \par On the way, we show that {\it every} automorphism of $G$ acts on both, the {\it cusps} and the {\it elliptic points} of $G$. Generalizing a result of Reiner for $A=\mathbb{F}_q[t]$ we describe for each cusp an uncountable subgroup of $\mathrm{Aut}(G)$ whose action on $G$ is essentially defined on the stabilizer of that cusp. In the case where $\delta$ (the degree of $\infty$) is $1$, the elliptic points are related to the isolated vertices of the quotient graph $G\setminus\mathcal{T}$ of the Bruhat-Tits tree. We construct an infinite group of automorphisms of $G$ which fully permutes the isolated vertices with cyclic stabilizer.

The algebraisation of higher level Deligne--Lusztig representations II: odd levels

Abstract:In this paper we study higher level Deligne--Lusztig representations of reductive groups over discrete valuation rings, with finite residue field $\mathbb{F}_q$. In previous work we proved that, at even levels, these geometrically constructed representations are isomorphic to certain algebraically constructed representations (referred to as the algebraisation theorem at even levels). In this paper we work with an arbitrary level $>1$. Our main result is (1) the algebraisation theorem at all levels $>1$ (with the sign being explicitly determined for $q\geq7$). As consequences, we obtain (2) the regular semisimplicity of orbits of generic higher level Deligne--Lusztig representations, and the dimension formula; in the course of the proof, we give (3) an induction formula of higher level Deligne--Lusztig representations, and a new proof of the character formula at regular semisimple elements.

Abstract:With the help of El Bachraoui's lemma, the creative microscoping method, and a new form of the Chinese remainder theorem for coprime polynomials, we prove a $q$-supercongruence for double series and a $q$-supercongruence for triple series modulo the sixth power of a cyclotomic polynomial. As conclusions, two corresponding supercongruences for double and triple series, which are associated with the (D.2) supercongruence of Van Hamme, are given.

Abstract:The $q$-Onsager algebra $O_q$ is defined by two generators and two relations, called the $q$-Dolan/Grady relations. In 2019, Baseilhac and Kolb introduced two automorphisms of $O_q$, now called the Lusztig automorphisms. Recently, we introduced a generalization of $O_q$ called the $S_3$-symmetric $q$-Onsager algebra $\mathbb O_q$. The algebra $\mathbb O_q$ has six distinguished generators, said to be standard. The standard $\mathbb O_q$-generators can be identified with the vertices of a regular hexagon, such that nonadjacent generators commute and adjacent generators satisfy the $q$-Dolan/Grady relations. In the present paper we do the following: (i) for each standard $\mathbb O_q$-generator we construct an automorphism of $\mathbb O_q$ called a Lusztig automorphism; (ii) we describe how the six Lusztig automorphisms of $\mathbb O_q$ are related to each other; (iii) we describe what happens if a finite-dimensional irreducible $\mathbb O_q$-module is twisted by a Lusztig automorphism; (iv) we give a detailed example involving an irreducible $\mathbb O_q$-module with dimension 5.

Abstract:We consider numerical semigroups $S_3 = \langle d_1,d_2,d_3 \rangle$, minimally generated by three positive integers. We revisit the Wilf question in $S_3$ and, making use of identities for degrees of syzygies of such semigroups, give a short proof of existence of an affirmative answer. We find also the lower bound for Frobenius numbers of $S_3$ and upper and lower bounds for higher genera.

Abstract:Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$. Greenberg has posed a question whether the structure of the fine Selmer group over the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $\mathbb{Q}$ can be described by cyclotomic polynomials in a certain precise manner. A recent work of Lei has made progress on this problem by proving that the fine Mordell-Weil group (in the sense of Wuthrich) does have this required property. The goal of this paper is study the analogous question of Greenberg over various $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions of an imaginary quadratic field $F$. In particular, when the elliptic curve has complex multiplication by the ring of integers of the imaginary quadratic field, we obtain analogous results of Lei over the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension and anti-cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $F$. In the event that the elliptic curve has good ordinary reduction at the prime $p$, we further obtain a result over the $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $F$ unramified outside precisely one of the prime of $F$ above $p$. Finally, we study the situation of an elliptic curve over the anticyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension under the generalized Heegner hypothesis. Along the way, we establish an analogous result for the BDP-Selmer group. This latter result is then applied to obtain a relation between the BDP $p$-adic $L$-function and the Mordell-Weil rank growth in the anticyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension which may be of independent interest.

Abstract:The {\it Weierstrass semigroup} of pole orders of meromorphic functions in a point $p$ of a smooth algebraic curve $C$ is a classical object of study; a celebrated problem of Hurwitz is to characterize which semigroups ${\rm S} \subset \mathbb{N}$ with finite complement are {\it realizable} as Weierstrass semigroups ${\rm S}= {\rm S}(C,p)$. In this note, we establish realizability results for cyclic covers $\pi: (C,p) \rightarrow (B,q)$ of hyperelliptic targets $B$ marked in hyperelliptic Weierstrass points; and we show that realizability is dictated by the behavior under $j$-fold multiplication of certain divisor classes in hyperelliptic Jacobians naturally associated to our cyclic covers, as $j$ ranges over all natural numbers.

On Erdős covering systems in global function fields

Abstract:A covering system of the integers is a finite collection of arithmetic progressions whose union is the set of integers. A well-known problem on covering systems is the minimum modulus problem posed by Erdős in 1950, who asked whether the minimum modulus in such systems with distinct moduli can be arbitrarily large. This problem was resolved by Hough in 2015, who showed that the minimum modulus is at most $10^{16}$. In 2022, Balister, Bollobás, Morris, Sahasrabudhe and Tiba reduced Hough's bound to $616,000$ by developing Hough's method. They call it the distortion method. In this paper, by applying this method, we mainly prove that there does not exist any covering system of multiplicity $s$ in any global function field of genus $g$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$ for $q\geq (1.14+0.16g)e^{6.5+0.97g}s^2$. In particular, there is no covering system of $\mathbb{F}_q[x]$ with distinct moduli for $q\geq 759$.

Abstract:The Huneke-Wiegand conjecture is a decades-long open question in commutative algebra. García-Sánchez and Leamer showed that a special case of this conjecture concerning numerical semigroup rings $\Bbbk[\Gamma]$ can be answered in the affirmative by locating certain arithmetic sequences within the numerical semigroup $\Gamma$. In this paper, we use their approach to prove the Huneke-Wiegand conjecture in the case where $\Gamma$ is generated by a generalized arithmetic sequence and showcase how visualizations can be leveraged to find the requisite arithmetic sequences.

Abstract:We describe new $q$-deformations of the 3-dimensional Heisenberg algebra, the simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ and the Witt algebra. They are constructed through a realization as differential operators. These operators are related to the modular group and $q$-deformed rational numbers defined by Morier-Genoud and Ovsienko and lead to $q$-deformed Möbius transformations acting on the hyperbolic plane.

Abstract:We show that each local field $\mathbb{F}_q((t))$ of characteristic $p > 0$ is characterised up to isomorphism within the class of all fields of imperfect exponent at most $1$ by (certain small quotients of) its absolute Galois group together with natural axioms concerning the $p$-torsion of its Brauer group. This complements previous work by Efrat-Fesenko, who analysed fields whose absolute Galois group is isomorphic to that of a local field of characteristic $p$.
