What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper primarily addresses the problem of achieving rapid cooperative flight of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in feature-poor environments without Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals. Specifically, the paper presents the following contributions: 1. **Decentralized Cooperative Flight Method**: A decentralized cooperative flight method for UAVs is proposed, which enables robust onboard mutual perception and group state feedback control in feature-poor environments without the need for external positioning systems or explicit communication. 2. **Enhanced Multi-Robot State Estimation (MRSE) Strategy**: An enhanced multi-robot state estimation algorithm is introduced to improve the reliability of purely onboard positioning, especially in real-world scenarios where instability may occur. 3. **Communication-Free Group Framework**: Although MRSE and neighborhood models may rely on information exchange between robots, the paper also introduces a communication-free version of the group framework, reducing dependence on often unreliable communication networks in large groups by estimating communication states. 4. **Distributed State Feedback Group Controller Design for Rapid Group Behavior**: The proposed distributed state feedback group controller allows for the stabilization of each UAV's specific position within the group and specifies the desired collective velocity, enabling the group to fly at higher speeds than existing methods. 5. **Adaptive Fusion with Primary Odometry Source**: By adaptively fusing Visual-Inertial Odometry (VIO) with the enhanced MRSE, the degradation of estimated positions during agile maneuvers is improved. 6. **Experimental Validation**: The paper validates the overall capability of the proposed solution through a series of complex real-world experiments, including a mission driven by a UAV interception task where the group speed reached the physical limits of the individual hardware platforms. In summary, this research aims to develop a new method for rapid cooperative flight of UAVs in feature-poor environments without GNSS signals, focusing on enhancing the group's flexibility, reliability, and independence while reducing reliance on external infrastructure and communication.
