Abstract:An elliptic exceptional Belyi covering is a connected Belyi covering uniquely determined by its ramification scheme or the respective dessin d'enfant when the underlying compact Riemann surface has genus 1. We give our Maple algorithm and table that display our calculations for elliptic exceptional Belyi coverings up to degree 12.

Abstract:Exceptional Belyi covering is a connected Belyi covering uniquely determined by its ramification scheme or the respective dessin d'enfant. We focus on rational exceptional Belyi coverings of compact Riemann surfaces of genus 0. Well known examples are cyclic, dihedral, and Chebyshev coverings. Using Maple, we identified all rational exceptional Belyi coverings up to degree 15. Their Belyi functions were calculated for degrees up to 6 along with some for degree 7. We also found new infinite series.

Explicit coverings of families of elliptic surfaces by squares of curves

Abstract:We show that, for each $n>0$, there is a family of elliptic surfaces which are covered by the square of a curve of genus $2n+1$, and whose Hodge structures have an action by ${\mathbb Q}(\sqrt{-n})$. By considering the case $n=3$, we show that one particular family of K3 surfaces are covered by the square of genus $7$. Using this, we construct a correspondence between the square of a curve of genus $7$ and a general K3 surface in ${\mathbb P}^4$ with $15$ ordinary double points up to isogeny. This gives an explicit proof of the Kuga-Satake-Deligne correspondence for these K3 surfaces and any K3 surfaces isogenous to them, and further, a proof of the Hodge conjecture for the squares of these surfaces. We conclude that the motives of these surfaces are Kimura-finite. Our analysis gives a birational equivalence between a moduli space of curves with additional data and the moduli space of these K3 surfaces with a specific elliptic fibration.

Abstract:We study genus 2 covers of relative elliptic curves over an arbitrary base in which 2 is invertible. Particular emphasis lies on the case that the covering degree is 2. We show that the data in the "basic construction" of genus 2 covers of relative elliptic curves determine the cover in a unique way (up to isomorphism). A classical theorem says that a genus 2 cover of an elliptic curve of degree 2 over a field of characteristic different from 2 is birational to a product of two elliptic curves over the projective line. We formulate and prove a generalization of this theorem for the relative situation. We also prove a Torelli theorem for genus 2 curves over an arbitrary base.

Abstract:We consider cyclic unramified coverings of degree d of irreducible complex smooth genus curves and their corresponding Prym varieties. They provide natural examples of polarized abelian varieties with automorphisms of order d. The rich geometry of the associated Prym map has been studied in several papers, and the cases are quite well understood. Nevertheless, very little is known for higher values of d. In this paper, we investigate whether the covering can be reconstructed from its Prym variety, that is, whether the generic Prym Torelli theorem holds for these coverings. We prove this is so for the so-called Sophie Germain prime numbers, that is, for prime such that is also prime. We use results of arithmetic nature on -type abelian varieties combined with theta-duality techniques.

Abstract:We construct a family of elliptic surfaces with $p_g=q=1$ that arise from base change of the Hesse pencil. We identify explicitly a component of the higher Noether-Lefschetz locus with positive Mordell-Weil rank, and a particular surface having maximal Picard number and defined over $\mathbb Q$. These examples satisfy the infinitesimal Torelli theorem, providing a second proof of the dominance of period map, which was first obtained by Engel-Greer-Ward. A third proof is provided using the Shioda modular surface associated with $\Gamma_0(11)$. Finally, we find birational models for the degenerations at the boundary of the one-dimensional Noether-Lefschetz locus, and extend the period map at those limit points.

Abstract:Let $\overline{{\mathcal M}_{0,5}^{\mathbb R}}$ be the Deligne-Mumford compactification of the moduli space of genus 0 real algebraic curves with 5 marked points. By ${\mathcal L}(\overline{{\mathcal M}_{0,5}^{\mathbb R}})$ we denote its orientation cover. The cell decomposition of ${\mathcal L}(\overline{{\mathcal M}_{0,5}^{\mathbb R}})$ is a dessin d'enfant of the genus 4. In this paper we compute the Belyi pair for this dessin. In particular, it appears that the corresponding curve is a celebrated Bring curve.

Cyclic coverings of rational normal surfaces which are quotients of a product of curves

Abstract:This paper deals with cyclic covers of a large family of rational normal surfaces that can also be described as quotients of a product, where the factors are cyclic covers of algebraic curves. We use a generalization of Esnault-Viehweg method to show that the action of the monodromy on the first Betti group of the covering (and its Hodge structure) splits as a direct sum of the same data for some specific cyclic covers over $\mathbb{P}^1$. This has applications to the study of Lê-Yomdin surface singularities, in particular to the action of the monodromy on the Mixed Hodge Structure, as well as to isotrivial fibered surfaces.

Abstract:For a branched cover between two closed orientable surfaces, the Riemann-Hurwitz formula relates the Euler characteristics of the surfaces, the total degree of the cover, and the total length of the partitions of the degree given by the local degrees at the preimages of the branching points. A very old problem asks whether a collection of partitions of an integer having the appropriate total length (that we call a candidate cover) always comes from some branched cover. The answer is known to be in the affirmative whenever the candidate base surface is not the 2-sphere, while for the 2-sphere exceptions do occur. A long-standing conjecture however asserts that when the candidate degree is a prime number, a candidate cover is always realizable. In this paper we analyze the question from the point of view of the geometry of 2-orbifolds, and we provide strong supporting evidence for the conjecture. In particular, we exhibit three different sequences of candidate covers, indexed by their degree, such that for each sequence: (1) The degrees giving realizable covers have asymptotically zero density in the naturals; (2) Each prime degree gives a realizable cover.

Abstract:In this paper we study genus-$4$ curves obtained as double covers of elliptic curves. Firstly we shall give explicit defining equations of such curves with explicit criterion for whether it is nonsingular, and show the irreducibility of the long polynomial determining whether the genus-4 curve is nonsingular or not, in any characteristic $\ne 2,3$. Secondly, as an application, we enumerate superspecial genus-$4$ double covers of elliptic curves in small characteristic.

Abstract:We introduce and motivate a conjecture about the existence of complete, 1-dimensional families of covers of an elliptic curve. If the conjecture holds, then it would imply a uniform lower bound of 5 for slope of the moduli space of curves. If the conjecture fails, this would itself be an interesting phenomenon worthy of explanation.

Abstract:Evaluation of low degree hypergeometric polynomials to zero defines an algebraic hypersurface in the affine space of the free parameters and the argument. This article investigates the algebraic surfaces 2F1(-N,b;c;z)=0 for N=3 and N=4. As a captivating application, these surfaces parametrize certain families of genus 0 Belyi maps.

Abstract:In this paper, we elaborate the theory of exceptional hereditary curves over arbitrary fields. In particular, we study the category of equivariant coherent sheaves on a regular projective curve whose quotient curve has genus zero and prove existence of a tilting object in this case. We also give a link between wallpaper groups and real hereditary curves, providing details to an old observation made by Helmut Lenzing.

Abstract:The Prym map assigns to each covering of curves a polarized abelian variety. In the case of unramified cyclic covers of curves of genus two, we show that the Prym map is ramified precisely on the locus of bielliptic covers. The key observation is that we can naturally associate to such a cover an abelian surface with a cyclic polarization, and then the codifferential of the Prym map can be interpreted in terms of multiplication of sections on the abelian surface. Furthermore, we give a different proof of a result by Ramanan that a genus two cyclic cover of degree sufficiently high is never hyperelliptic.

Abstract:The {\it Weierstrass semigroup} of pole orders of meromorphic functions in a point $p$ of a smooth algebraic curve $C$ is a classical object of study; a celebrated problem of Hurwitz is to characterize which semigroups ${\rm S} \subset \mathbb{N}$ with finite complement are {\it realizable} as Weierstrass semigroups ${\rm S}= {\rm S}(C,p)$. In this note, we establish realizability results for cyclic covers $\pi: (C,p) \rightarrow (B,q)$ of hyperelliptic targets $B$ marked in hyperelliptic Weierstrass points; and we show that realizability is dictated by the behavior under $j$-fold multiplication of certain divisor classes in hyperelliptic Jacobians naturally associated to our cyclic covers, as $j$ ranges over all natural numbers.

Abstract:In this paper, following Grothendieck {\it Esquisse d'un programme}, which was motivated by Belyi's work, we study some properties of surfaces $X$ which are triangulated by (possibly ideal) isometric equilateral triangles of one of the spherical, euclidean or hyperbolic geometries. These surfaces have a natural Riemannian metric with conic singularities. In the euclidean case we analyze the closed geodesics and their lengths. Such surfaces can be given the structure of a Riemann surface which, considered as algebraic curves, are defined over $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$ by a theorem of Belyi. They have been studied by many authors of course. Here we define the notion of connected sum of two Belyi functions and give some concrete examples. In the particular case when $X$ is a torus, the triangulation leads to an elliptic curve and we define the notion of a "peel" obtained from the triangulation (which is a metaphor of an orange peel) and relate this peel with the modulus $\tau$ of the elliptic curve. Many fascinating questions arise regarding the modularity of the elliptic curve and the geometric aspects of the Taniyama-Shimura-Weil theory.

Hyperelliptic curves mapping to abelian varieties and applications to Beilinson's conjecture for zero-cycles

Abstract:Let $A$ be an abelian surface over an algebraically closed field $\overline{k}$ with an embedding $\overline{k}\hookrightarrow\mathbb{C}$. When $A$ is isogenous to a product of elliptic curves, we describe a large collection of pairwise non-isomorphic hyperelliptic curves mapping birationally into $A$. For infinitely many integers $g\geq 2$, this collection has infinitely many curves of genus $g$, and no two curves in the collection have the same image under any isogeny from $A$. Using these hyperelliptic curves, we find many rational equivalences in the Chow group of zero-cycles $\text{CH}_0(A)$. We use these results to give some progress towards Beilinson's conjecture for zero-cycles, which predicts that for a smooth projective variety $X$ over $\overline{Q}$ the kernel of the Albanese map of $X$ is zero.

Negative Curves and Elliptic Fibrations on a Special Rational Surface

Abstract:The blown up complex projective plane in the twelve triple points of the dual Hesse arrangement has an infinite number of irreducible rational curves of self-intersection $-1$, for short, $(-1)$-curves. In the preprint version of [Dumnicki, 2019], T. Szemberg et alii tried to keep track of plane rational curves which produce $(-1)$-curves, by applying successively to a straight line compositions taken from three different quadratic Cremona maps preserving the dual Hesse arrangement, in such a way as to produce a diagram of bifurcations. The symmetric aspect of the degrees of curves encoded in the entries of the diagram motivated them to propose the problem of to give a closed formula for the degree of the rational curve at the entry $a_{i,j}$. We solved this problem for a slightly different diagram of bifurcations of the same Cremona maps, which recover and extends the data on degrees of the original diagram. We also are able to describe the position and multiplicites of singularities of each rational curve encoded in the diagram, as well as their equations (implemented in Python and Singular softwares). Our idea is to embed the plane rational curves as components of special elements of elliptic pencils, then apply a closed formula for the degrees of the generic curves of the elliptic pencils of [Puchuri, 2013], and, from this, extract the data of the rational curves on each entry of the diagram.

Lifting Elementary Abelian Covers of Curves

Abstract:Given a Galois cover of curves $f$ over a field of characteristic $p$, the lifting problem asks whether there exists a Galois cover over a complete mixed characteristic discrete valuation ring whose reduction is $f$. In this paper, we consider the case where the Galois groups are elementary abelian $p$-groups. We prove a combinatorial criterion for lifting an elementary abelian $p$-cover, dependent on the branch loci of lifts of its $p$-cyclic subcovers. We also study how branch points of a lift coalesce on the special fiber. Finally, we analyze lifts for several families of $(\mathbb{Z}/2)^3$-covers of various conductor types, both with equidistant branch locus geometry and non-equidistant branch locus geometry.

Abstract:We describe a system of plane algebraic curves defined over \Z, attached naturally to the exponential function. On of these is a remarkable curve of degree 6 that has genus equal to 1. As the sectic curve has rational points, it is an elliptic curveand can be tranformed over \Q into the curve 1584.j1 of the LMFDB. One is left to wonder what the number 11, appearing in the factorisation 1584=2^4.3^2.11 has to do with the exponential function.
