Abstract:In this paper, we mainly consider the decay property of stopped $M^X/M/1$-queueing networks with $d (\geq 2)$ nodes. The exact value of the decay parameter $\lambda_{\mathcal{C}}$ is obtained by using a new method. Then, the corresponding $\lambda_{\mathcal{C}}$-invariant measures and quasi-distributions are presented.

Abstract:We give in this paper two characterizations of the minimal exponential rate of survival $\theta$ * of the M/M/$\infty$ queue. The first one is a derivation of a known result on the duration of excursions of this process. The second one was conjectured by Mart{í}nez and Ycart [8] and is proved using complex analysis by establishing a connection with the first characterization in terms of the incomplete gamma function.

Abstract:In this paper, we give variational representations for decay parameters of Markov chains. In continuous-time cases, the representation involves Donsker-Varadhan's famous I-functional, from which some dual representations are given, which are expected to he useful in estimating the lower and upper bounds of the decay parameter. As a consequence, dual representations for decay parameters of discrete time Markov chains are derived. For continuous-time chains with finite states, we also give another form of dual formulas, which can be regarded as a version of the one for the Perron Frobenius eigenvalue, with nonnegative matrices replaced by Q-matrices of the chains. Connections with quasi-stationarity and quasi-ergodicity of absorbing Markov chains are discussed. An interpretation for the corresponding variational solutions is given.

Abstract:For a quadratic Markov branching process (QMBP), we show that the decay parameter is equal to the first eigenvalue of a Sturm-Liouville operator associated with the PDE that the generating function of the transition probability satisfies. The proof is based on the spectral properties of the Sturm-Liouville operator. Both the upper and lower bounds of the decay parameter are given explicitly by means of a version of Hardy inequality. Two examples are provided to illustrate our results. The important quantity, the Hardy index, which is closely linked with the decay parameter of QMBP, is deeply investigated and estimated.

Simple and explicit bounds for multi-server queues with $1/(1-ρ)$ scaling

Abstract:We consider the FCFS $GI/GI/n$ queue, and prove the first simple and explicit bounds that scale as $\frac{1}{1-\rho}$ under only the assumption that inter-arrival times have finite second moment, and service times have finite $2+\epsilon$ moment for some $\epsilon > 0$. Here $\rho$ denotes the corresponding traffic intensity. Conceptually, our results can be viewed as a multi-server analogue of Kingman's bound. Our main results are bounds for the tail of the steady-state queue length and the steady-state probability of delay. The strength of our bounds (e.g. in the form of tail decay rate) is a function of how many moments of the service distribution are assumed finite. Our bounds scale gracefully even when the number of servers grows large and the traffic intensity converges to unity simultaneously, as in the Halfin-Whitt scaling regime. Some of our bounds scale better than $\frac{1}{1-\rho}$ in certain asymptotic regimes. In these same asymptotic regimes we also prove bounds for the tail of the steady-state number in service. Our main proofs proceed by explicitly analyzing the bounding process which arises in the stochastic comparison bounds of Gamarnik and Goldberg for multi-server queues. Along the way we derive several novel results for suprema of random walks and pooled renewal processes which may be of independent interest. We also prove several additional bounds using drift arguments (which have much smaller pre-factors), and point out a conjecture which would imply further related bounds and generalizations. We also show that when all moments of the service distribution are finite and satisfy a mild growth rate assumption, our bounds can be strengthened to yield explicit tail estimates decaying as $O\big(\exp(-x^{\alpha})\big)$, with $\alpha \in (0,1)$ depending on the growth rate of these moments.

Abstract:We study the power spectral density of continuous time Markov chains and explicit its relationship with the eigenstructure of the infinitesimal generator. This result helps us understand the dynamics of the number of customers for a M/M/1 queuing process in the heavy traffic regime.Closed-form relations for the power law scalings associated to the eigenspectrum of the M/M/1 queue generator are obtained, providing a detailed description of the power spectral density structure, which is shown to exhibit a $1/f^{3/2}$ noise.We confirm this result by numerical simulation.We also show that a continuous time random walk on a ring exhibits very similar <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://behavior.It" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> is remarkable than a complex behavior such as $1/f$ noise can emerge from the M/M/1 queue, which is the ''simplest'' queuing model.

Exponential Tail Bounds on Queues: A Confluence of Non-Asymptotic Heavy Traffic and Large Deviations

Abstract:In general, obtaining the exact steady-state distribution of queue lengths is not feasible. Therefore, we establish bounds for the tail probabilities of queue lengths. Specifically, we examine queueing systems under Heavy-Traffic (HT) conditions and provide exponentially decaying bounds for the probability $\mathbb P(\epsilon q > x)$, where $\epsilon$ is the HT parameter denoting how far the load is from the maximum allowed load. Our bounds are not limited to asymptotic cases and are applicable even for finite values of $\epsilon$, and they get sharper as $\epsilon \to 0$. Consequently, we derive non-asymptotic convergence rates for the tail probabilities. Unlike other approaches such as moment bounds based on drift arguments and bounds on Wasserstein distance using Stein's method, our method yields sharper tail bounds. Furthermore, our results offer bounds on the exponential rate of decay of the tail, given by $-\frac{1}{x} \log \mathbb P(\epsilon q > x)$ for any finite value of $x$. These can be interpreted as non-asymptotic versions of Large Deviation (LD) results. We demonstrate our approach by presenting tail bounds for: (i) a continuous time Join-the-shortest queue (JSQ) load balancing system, (ii) a discrete time single-server queue and (iii) an $M/M/n$ queue. We not only bridge the gap between classical-HT and LD regimes but also explore the large system HT regimes for JSQ and $M/M/n$ systems. In these regimes, both the system size and the system load increase simultaneously. Our results also close a gap in the existing literature on the limiting distribution of JSQ in the super-NDS (a.k.a. super slowdown) regime. This contribution is of an independent interest. Here, a key ingredient is a more refined characterization of state space collapse for JSQ system, achieved by using an exponential Lyapunov function designed to approximate the $\ell_{\infty}$ norm.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate exact tail asymptotics for the stationary distribution of a fluid model driven by the $M/M/c$ queue, which is a two-dimensional queueing system with a discrete phase and a continuous level. We extend the kernel method to study tail asymptotics of its stationary distribution, and a total of three types of exact tail asymptotics is identified from our study and reported in the paper.

Abstract:This paper studies the input-queued switch operating under the MaxWeight algorithm when the arrivals are according to a Markovian process. We exactly characterize the heavy-traffic scaled mean sum queue length in the heavy-traffic limit, and show that it is within a factor of less than 2 from a universal lower bound. Moreover, we obtain lower and upper bounds that are applicable in all traffic regimes and become tight in the heavy-traffic regime. We obtain these results by generalizing the drift method recently developed for the case of independent and identically distributed arrivals to the case of Markovian arrivals. We illustrate this generalization by first obtaining the heavy-traffic mean queue length and its distribution in a single-server queue under Markovian arrivals and then applying it to the case of an input-queued switch. The key idea is to exploit the geometric mixing of finite-state Markov chains, and to work with a time horizon that is chosen so that the error due to mixing depends on the heavy-traffic parameter.

Abstract:It is worth pointing out that some stochastic systems are indeed stable but subject to a certain lower decay rate which is different from exponential decay,such as polynomial or logarithmic.For more accurate quantitative analyses of stability properties,this paper extends the usual exponential stability concepts to a more general stable decay function and investigates the general decay stability of stochastic differential equations with Markovian switching.Firstly,some φ(t)-stability criteria in p-th moment and almost surely sense for the analytical solutions are established,by utilizing It formula,Borel-Cantelli and martingale exponential inequalities.Then the Euler Maruyama method is shown to be effective in capturing φ(t)-stability behavior for all sufficiently small timesteps under appropriate conditions.

Abstract:We investigate the tail probability of the queue length of low-priority class for a discrete-time priority BMAP/PH/1 queue that consists of two Priority classes, with BMAP (Batch Markovian Arrival Process) arrivals of high-priority class and MAP (Markovian Arrival Process) arrivals of low-priority class. A sufficient condition under which this tail probability has the asymptotically geometric property is derived. A method is designed to compute the asymptotic decay rate if the asymptotically geometric property holds. For the case when the BMAP for high-priority class is the superposition of a number of MAPs, though the parameter matrices representing the BMAP is huge in dimension, the sufficient condition is numerically easy to verify and the asymptotic decay rate can be computed efficiently.

Abstract:We consider an infinite server queue where the arrival and the service rates are both modulated by a stochastic environment governed by an $S$-valued stochastic process $X$ that is ergodic with a limiting measure $\pi\in \mathcal{P}(S)$. Under certain conditions when $X$ is semi-Markovian and satisfies the renewal regenerative property, long-term behavior of the total counts of people in the queue (denoted by $Y:=(Y_{t}:t\ge 0)$) becomes explicit and the limiting measure of $Y$ can be described through a well-studied affine stochastic recurrence equation (SRE) $X\stackrel{d}{=}CX+D,\,\, X\perp\!\!\!\perp (C, D)$. We propose a sampling scheme from that limiting measure with explicit convergence diagnostics. Additionally, one example is presented where the stochastic environment makes the system transient, in absence of a `no-feedback' assumption.

Abstract:This paper studies the queue length process in series Jackson networks with external input to the first station. We show that its Markov transition probabilities can be written as a finite sum of non-crossing probabilities, so that questions on time-dependent queueing behavior are translated to questions on non-crossing probabilities. This makes previous work on non-crossing probabilities relevant to queueing systems and allows new queueing results to be established. To illustrate the latter, we prove that the relaxation time (i.e., the reciprocal of the `spectral gap') of a positive recurrent system equals the relaxation time of an M/M/1 queue with the same arrival and service rates as the network's bottleneck station. This resolves a conjecture of Blanc, which he proved for two queues in series.

Abstract:This paper focuses on an infinite-server queue modulated by an independently evolving finite-state Markovian background process, with transition rate matrix $Q\equiv(q_{ij})_{i,j=1}^d$. Both arrival rates and service rates are depending on the state of the background process. The main contribution concerns the derivation of central limit theorems for the number of customers in the system at time $t\ge 0$, in the asymptotic regime in which the arrival rates $\lambda_i$ are scaled by a factor $N$, and the transition rates $q_{ij}$ by a factor $N^\alpha$, with $\alpha \in \mathbb R^+$. The specific value of $\alpha$ has a crucial impact on the result: (i) for $\alpha>1$ the system essentially behaves as an M/M/$\infty$ queue, and in the central limit theorem the centered process has to be normalized by $\sqrt{N}$; (ii) for $\alpha<1$, the centered process has to be normalized by $N^{{1-}\alpha/2}$, with the deviation matrix appearing in the expression for the variance.

Abstract:The purpose of this note is to point out the connection between the invariance property of M/M/1 and GI/G/1 queues (which has been reported in several papers) and the interchangeability and reversibility properties of tandem queues. This enables us to gain new insights for both problems and obtain stronger invariance results for M/M/1, GI/G/1, as well as loss systems M/M/1/N, GI/G/1/N and tandem systems.
Stability of Decentralized Queueing Networks Beyond Complete Bipartite Cases

Abstract:Gaitonde and Tardos recently studied a model of queueing networks where queues compete for servers and re-send returned packets in future rounds. They quantify the amount of additional processing power that guarantees a decentralized system's stability, both when the queues adapt their strategies from round to round using no-regret learning algorithms, and when they are patient and evaluate the utility of a strategy over long periods of time. In this paper, we generalize Gaitonde and Tardos's model and consider scenarios where not all servers can serve all queues (i.e., the underlying graph is an incomplete bipartite graphs) and, further, when packets need to go through more than one layer of servers before their completions (i.e., when the underlying graph is a DAG). For the bipartite case, we obtain bounds comparable to those by Gaitonde and Tardos, with the factor slightly worse in the patient queueing model. For the more general multi-layer systems, we show that straightforward generalizations of the utility function and servers' priority rules in Gaitonde and Tardos's model may lead to unbounded gaps between centralized and decentralized systems when the queues use no regret strategies. We define a new utility and a service priority rule that are aware of the queue lengths, and show that these suffice to restore the bounded gap between centralized and decentralized systems observed in bipartite graphs.

Abstract:We consider a family of M(t)/M(t)/1/1 loss systems with arrival and service intensities (λt (c), μt (c)) = (λct , μct ), where (λt , μt ) are governed by an irreducible Markov process with infinitesimal generator Q = (qij )m × m such that (λt , μt ) = (λi , μi ) when the Markov process is in state i. Based on matrix analysis we show that the blocking probability is decreasing in c in the interval [0, c ∗], where c ∗ = 1/maxi Σ j ≠i qij /(λi + μi ). Two special cases are studied for which the result can be extended to all c. These results support Ross's conjecture that a more regular arrival (and service) process leads to a smaller blocking probability.
