Abstract:The total Betti numbers of the toric ideal of a simple graph are, in general, highly sensitive to any small change of the graph. In this paper we look at some combinatorial operations that cause total Betti numbers to change in predictable ways. In particular, we focus on a procedure that preserves these invariants.

Abstract:For a graph $G$, a graph cubeahedron $\square_G$ and a graph associahedron $\triangle_G$ are simple convex polytopes which admit (real) toric manifolds. In this paper, we introduce a graph invariant, called the $b$-number, and we show that the $b$-numbers compute the Betti numbers of the real toric manifold $X^\mathbb{R}(\square_G)$ corresponding to a graph cubeahedron. The $b$-number is a counterpart of the notion of $a$-number, introduced by S. Choi and the second named author, which computes the Betti numbers of the real toric manifold $X^\mathbb{R}(\triangle_G)$ corresponding to a graph associahedron. We also study various relationships between $a$-numbers and $b$-numbers from a toric topological view. Interestingly, for a forest $G$ and its line graph $L(G)$, the real toric manifolds $X^\mathbb{R}(\triangle_G)$ and $X^\mathbb{R}(\square_{L(G)})$ have the same Betti numbers.

Abstract:A toric ideal is called robust if its universal Gröbner basis is a minimal set of generators, and is called generalized robust if its universal Gröbner basis equals its universal Markov basis (the union of all its minimal sets of binomial generators). Robust and generalized robust toric ideals are both interesting from both a Commutative Algebra and an Algebraic Statistics perspective. However, only a few nontrivial examples of such ideals are known. In this work we study these properties for toric ideals of both graphs and numerical semigroups. For toric ideals of graphs, we characterize combinatorially the graphs giving rise to robust and to generalized robust toric ideals generated by quadratic binomials. As a byproduct, we obtain families of Koszul rings. For toric ideals of numerical semigroups, we determine that one of its initial ideals is a complete intersection if and only if the semigroup belongs to the so-called family of free numerical semigroups. Hence, we characterize all complete intersection numerical semigroups which are minimally generated by one of its Gröbner basis and, as a consequence, all the Betti numbers of the toric ideal and its corresponding initial ideal coincide. Moreover, also for numerical semigroups, we prove that the ideal is generalized robust if and only if the semigroup has a unique Betti element and that there are only trivial examples of robust ideals. We finish the paper with some open questions.

Abstract:In this paper, the concepts of binomial difference ideals and toric difference varieties are defined and their properties are proved. Two canonical representations for Laurent binomial difference ideals are given using the reduced Groebner basis of Z[x]-lattices and regular and coherent difference ascending chains, respectively. Criteria for a Laurent binomial difference ideal to be reflexive, prime, well-mixed, perfect, and toric are given in terms of their support lattices which are Z[x]-lattices. The reflexive, well-mixed, and perfect closures of a Laurent binomial difference ideal are shown to be binomial. Four equivalent definitions for toric difference varieties are presented. Finally, algorithms are given to check whether a given Laurent binomial difference ideal I is reflexive, prime, well-mixed, perfect, or toric, and in the negative case, to compute the reflexive, well-mixed, and perfect closures of I. An algorithm is given to decompose a finitely generated perfect binomial difference ideal as the intersection of reflexive prime binomial difference ideals.

On a combinatorial description of the Gorenstein index for varieties with torus action

Abstract:The anticanonical complex is a combinatorial tool that was invented to extend the features of the Fano polytope from toric geometry to wider classes of varieties. In this note we show that the Gorenstein index of Fano varieties with torus action of complexity one (and even more general of the so-called general arrangement varieties) can be read off its anticanonical complex in terms of lattice distances in full analogy to the toric Fano polytope. As an application we give concrete bounds on the defining data of almost homogeneous Fano threefolds of Picard number one having a reductive automorphism group with two-dimensional maximal torus depending on their Gorenstein index.

Abstract:The universal Gröbner basis of $I$, is a Gröbner basis for $I$ with respect to all term orders simultaneously. Let $I_G$ be the toric ideal of a graph $G$. We characterize in graph theoretical terms the elements of the universal Gröbner basis of the toric ideal $I_G$. We provide a bound for the degree of the binomials in the universal Gröbner basis of the toric ideal of a graph. Finally we give a family of examples of circuits for which their true degrees are less than the degrees of some elements of the Graver basis.

Abstract:Let $H = \langle n_1, n_2, n_3\rangle$ be a numerical semigroup. Let $\tilde H$ be the interval completion of $H$, namely the semigroup generated by the interval $\langle n_1, n_1+1, \ldots, n_3\rangle$. Let $K$ be a field and $K[H]$ the semigroup ring generated by $H$. Let $I_H^*$ be the defining ideal of the tangent cone of $K[H]$. In this paper, we describe the defining equations of $I_H^*$. From that, we establish the Herzog-Stamate conjecture for monomial space curves stating that $\beta_i(I_H^*) \le \beta_i(I_{\tilde H}^*)$ for all $i$, where $\beta_i(I_H^*)$ and $\beta_i(I_{\tilde H}^*)$ are the $i$th Betti numbers of $I_H^*$ and $I_{\tilde H}^*$ respectively.

Real toric manifolds associated with chordal nestohedra

Abstract:This paper investigates the rational Betti numbers of real toric manifolds associated with chordal nestohedra. We consider the poset topology of a specific poset induced from a chordal building set, and show its EL-shellability. Based on this, we present an explicit description using alternating $\mathcal{B}$-permutations for a chordal building set $\mathcal{B}$, transforming the computing Betti numbers into a counting problem. This approach allows us to compute the $a$-number of a finite simple graph through permutation counting when the graph is chordal. In addition, we provide detailed computations for specific cases such as real Hochschild varieties corresponding to Hochschild polytopes.

Abstract:Associated to any hypergraph is a toric ideal encoding the algebraic relations among its edges. We study these ideals and the combinatorics of their minimal generators, and derive general degree bounds for both uniform and non-uniform hypergraphs in terms of balanced hypergraph bicolorings, separators, and splitting sets. In turn, this provides complexity bounds for algebraic statistical models associated to hypergraphs. As two main applications, we recover a well-known complexity result for Markov bases of arbitrary 3-way tables, and we show that the defining ideal of the tangential variety is generated by quadratics and cubics in cumulant coordinates.

The regularity of almost all edge ideals

Abstract:A fruitful contemporary paradigm in graph theory is that almost all graphs that do not contain a certain subgraph have common structural characteristics. The "almost" is crucial, without it there is no structure. In this paper we transfer this paradigm to commutative algebra and make use of deep graph theoretic results. A key tool are the critical graphs introduced by Balogh and Butterfield. We consider edge ideals $I_G$ of graphs and their Betti numbers. The numbers of the form $\beta_{i,2i+2}$ constitute the "main diagonal" of the Betti table. It is well known that any Betti number $\beta_{i,j}(I_G)$ below (or equivalently, to the left of) this diagonal is always zero. We identify a certain "parabola" inside the Betti table and call parabolic Betti numbers the entries of the Betti table bounded on the left by the main diagonal and on the right by this parabola. Let $\beta_{i,j}$ be a parabolic Betti number on the $r$-th row of the Betti table, for $r\ge3$. Our main results state that almost all graphs $G$ with $\beta_{i,j}(I_G)=0$ can be partitioned into $r-2$ cliques and one independent set, and in particular for almost all graphs $G$ with $\beta_{i,j}(I_G)=0$ the regularity of $I_G$ is $r-1$.

Abstract:The geometric vertex decomposability property for polynomial ideals is an ideal-theoretic generalization of the vertex decomposability property for simplicial complexes. Indeed, a homogeneous geometrically vertex decomposable ideal is radical and Cohen-Macaulay, and is in the Gorenstein liaison class of a complete intersection (glicci). In this paper, we initiate an investigation into when the toric ideal $I_G$ of a finite simple graph $G$ is geometrically vertex decomposable. We first show how geometric vertex decomposability behaves under tensor products, which allows us to restrict to connected graphs. We then describe a graph operation that preserves geometric vertex decomposability, thus allowing us to build many graphs whose corresponding toric ideals are geometrically vertex decomposable. Using work of Constantinescu and Gorla, we prove that toric ideals of bipartite graphs are geometrically vertex decomposable. We also propose a conjecture that all toric ideals of graphs with a square-free degeneration with respect to a lexicographic order are geometrically vertex decomposable. As evidence, we prove the conjecture in the case that the universal Gröbner basis of $I_G$ is a set of quadratic binomials. We also prove that some other families of graphs have the property that $I_G$ is glicci.

Intersection cohomology of type-A toric varieties

Abstract:Type-A toric varieties may be obtained as GIT quotients with respect to a torus action with weights corresponding to roots of the group $SL(k)$ for some $k>1$. These varieties appear in various important applications, in particular, as normal cones to strata in moduli spaces of vector bundles. In this paper, we describe the intersection Betti numbers of these varieties, and those of some associated projective varieties. We present an elegant combinatorial model for these numbers, and, using the work of Hausel and Sturmfels, we show that the relevant intersection cohomology groups are endowed with a canonical product structure.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite simple graph on the vertex set $V(G)$ and let $r$ be a positive integer. We consider the hypergraph $\mathrm{Con}_r(G)$ whose vertices are the vertices of $G$ and the (hyper)edges are all $A\subseteq V(G)$ such that $|A|=r+1$ and the induced subgraph $G[A]$ is connected. The (hyper)edge ideal $I_r(G)$ of $\mathrm{Con}_r(G)$ is also the Stanley-Reisner ideal of a generalisation of the independence complex of $G$, called the $r$-independence complex $\mathrm{Ind}_r(G)$. In this article we make extensive use of the Mayer-Vietoris sequence to find the graded Betti numbers of $I_r(G_1*G_2)$ in terms of the graded Betti numbers of $I_r(G_1)$ and $I_r(G_2)$, where $G_1*G_2$ is the join of $G_1$ and $G_2$. Moreover, we find formulas for all the graded Betti numbers of $I_r(G)$, when $G$ is a complete graph, complete multipartite graph, cycle graph and the wheel graph.

Effects of graph operations on star pairwise compatibility graphs

Abstract:A graph $G=(V,E)$ is defined as a star-$k$-PCG when it is possible to assign a positive real number weight $w$ to each vertex $V$, and define $k$ distinct intervals $I_1, I_2, \ldots I_k$, in such a way that there is an edge $uv$ in $E$ if and only if the sum of the weights of vertices $u$ and $v$ falls within the union of these intervals. The star-$k$-PCG class is connected to two significant categories of graphs, namely PCGs and multithreshold graphs. The star number of a graph $G$, is the smallest $k$ for which $G$ is a star-$k$-PCG. In this paper, we study the effects of various graph operations, such as the addition of twins, pendant vertices, universal vertices, or isolated vertices, on the star number of the graph resulting from these operations. As a direct application of our results, we determine the star number of lobster graphs and provide an upper bound for the star number of acyclic graphs.

Abstract:In this paper, the concept of toric difference varieties is defined and four equivalent descriptions for toric difference varieties are presented in terms of difference rational parametrization, difference coordinate rings, toric difference ideals, and group actions by difference tori. Connections between toric difference varieties and affine N[x]-semimodules are established by proving the correspondence between the irreducible invariant difference subvarieties and the faces of the N[x]-submodules and the orbit-face correspondence. Finally, an algorithm is given to decide whether a binomial difference ideal represented by a Z[x]-lattice defines a toric difference variety.

Abstract:Characteristic imsets are 0-1 vectors which correspond to Markov equivalence classes of directed acyclic graphs. The study of their convex hull, named the characteristic imset polytope, has led to new and interesting geometric perspectives on the important problem of causal discovery. In this paper we begin the study of the associated toric ideal. We develop a new generalization of the toric fiber product, which we call a quasi-independence gluing, and show that under certain combinatorial homogeneity conditions, one can iteratively compute a Gröbner basis via lifting. For faces of the characteristic imset polytope associated to trees, we apply this technique to compute a Gröbner basis for the associated toric ideal. We end with a study of the characteristic ideal of the cycle and propose directions for future work.

The relevant data structures are Janet trees which provide a very fast search for a Janet divisor. We broach also efficiency issues in view of application of the algorithm presented to computation of toric ideals.

Abstract:In this article bipartite planar graphs St_r are investigated, r the number of their plane regions. Bounds for the graded Betti numbers and the projective dimension of the quotient ring associated to such graphs are discussed. We prove that r is related to algebraic invariants that arise from the projective resolution of the edge ideal of the graph. We also deal with labeling methods for certain graphs and show that graphs St_r admit a graceful numbering of their edges.
