Abstract:In the framework of the de Broglie-Bohm pilot-wave theory, or Bohmian mechanics, we examine two pedagogical problems that illustrate the bound and unbound motion of spin-1/2 particles: First, a single spin-1/2 particle trapped in the ground state of a spherical box is studied in both the relativistic and nonrelativistic versions of the theory; second, the free time evolution of this particle once the confinement is released is examined, demonstrating how the Fourier transform of the prepared wave function yields the statistics of the particle's far-field (asymptotic) velocity, thereby providing a deeper understanding of time-of-flight momentum spectroscopy techniques.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper attempts to address the following major issues:
1. **Spin-Aware Motion in de Broglie-Bohm Theory**:
- The paper studies the bound and unbound state motion of spin-1/2 particles within the framework of de Broglie-Bohm theory. Specifically, it first examines the ground state of a spin-1/2 particle trapped in a spherical box, exploring both relativistic and non-relativistic versions of the scenario; secondly, it discusses the free evolution of the particle after the constraint is removed, demonstrating how the Fourier transform provides far-field velocity statistical information, thereby better understanding the time-of-flight momentum spectroscopy technique.
2. **Spin-Dependent Guiding Equation**:
- The paper emphasizes the importance of the spin-dependent guiding equation in de Broglie-Bohm theory and points out that previous studies often neglected the correct spin term, leading to inconsistencies between theory and experimental results. By introducing the correct spin term, the paper resolves this issue.
3. **Motion of Electrons in a Spherical Box**:
- The study investigates the behavior of electrons in a spherical box, including their trajectories in both non-relativistic and relativistic cases. The results show that in the non-relativistic case, the electron's trajectory exhibits periodic circular orbits; whereas in the relativistic case, the electron's angular velocity is limited and does not increase indefinitely.
4. **Motion of Electrons After Deconfinement**:
- The paper explores the behavior of electrons after the constraint is removed, i.e., the behavior of electrons after suddenly opening the spherical box. Using the de Broglie-Bohm equation, the paper studies the wave function evolution and trajectory characteristics of the electron after deconfinement, finding that the electron forms a series of self-similar wave packets, exhibiting time diffraction phenomena.
Through these studies, the paper aims to demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of de Broglie-Bohm theory in dealing with spin particles and complex physical systems.
