Abstract:We develop the basic model theory of local positive logic, a new logic that mixes positive logic (where negation is not allowed) and local logic (where models omit types of infinite distant pairs). We study several basic model theoretic notions such as compactness, positive closedness (existential closedness) and completeness (irreducibility).

Abstract:We generalise various theorems for finding indiscernible trees and arrays to positive logic: based on an existing modelling theorem for s-trees, we prove modelling theorems for str-trees, str -trees (the reduct of str-trees that forgets the length comparison relation) and arrays. Sufficient conditions for local tabularity of a polymodal logic

Abstract:On relational structures and on polymodal logics, we describe operations which preserve local tabularity. This provides new sufficient semantic and axiomatic conditions for local tabularity of a modal logic. The main results are the following. We show that local tabularity does not depend on reflexivity. Namely, given a class $\mathcal{F}$ of frames, consider the class $\mathcal{F}^\mathrm{r}$ of frames, where the reflexive closure operation was applied to each relation in every frame in $\mathcal{F}$. We show that if the logic of $\mathcal{F}^\mathrm{r}$ is locally tabular, then the logic of $\mathcal{F}$ is locally tabular as well. Then we consider the operation of sum on Kripke frames, where a family of frames-summands is indexed by elements of another frame. We show that if both the logic of indices and the logic of summands are locally tabular, then the logic of corresponding sums is also locally tabular. Finally, using the previous theorem, we describe an operation on logics that preserves local tabularity: we provide a set of formulas such that the extension of the fusion of two canonical locally tabular logics with these formulas is locally tabular.

Semantical Investigations on Non-classical Logics with Recovery Operators: Negation

Abstract:We investigate mathematical structures that provide natural semantics for families of (quantified) non-classical logics featuring special unary connectives, known as recovery operators, that allow us to 'recover' the properties of classical logic in a controlled manner. These structures are known as topological Boolean algebras, which are Boolean algebras extended with additional operations subject to specific conditions of a topological nature. In this study we focus on the paradigmatic case of negation. We demonstrate how these algebras are well-suited to provide a semantics for some families of paraconsistent Logics of Formal Inconsistency and paracomplete Logics of Formal Undeterminedness. These logics feature recovery operators used to earmark propositions that behave 'classically' when interacting with non-classical negations. Unlike traditional semantical investigations, which are carried out in natural language (extended with mathematical shorthand), our formal meta-language is a system of higher-order logic (HOL) for which automated reasoning tools exist. In our approach, topological Boolean algebras are encoded as algebras of sets via their Stone-type representation. We use our higher-order meta-logic to define and interrelate several transformations on unary set operations, which naturally give rise to a topological cube of opposition. Additionally, our approach enables a uniform characterization of propositional, first-order, and higher-order quantification, including restrictions to constant and varying domains. With this work, we aim to make a case for the utilization of automated theorem proving technology for conducting computer-supported research in non-classical logics. All the results presented in this paper have been formally verified, and in many cases obtained, using the Isabelle/HOL proof assistant.

Abstract:We consider a simple modal logic whose non-modal part has conjunction and disjunction as connectives and whose modalities come in adjoint pairs, but are not in general closure operators. Despite absence of negation and implication, and of axioms corresponding to the characteristic axioms of (e.g.) T, S4 and S5, such logics are useful, as shown in previous work by Baltag, Coecke and the first author, for encoding and reasoning about information and misinformation in multi-agent systems. For such a logic we present an algebraic semantics, using lattices with agent-indexed families of adjoint pairs of operators, and a cut-free sequent calculus. The calculus exploits operators on sequents, in the style of "nested" or "tree-sequent" calculi; cut-admissibility is shown by constructive syntactic methods. The applicability of the logic is illustrated by reasoning about the muddy children puzzle, for which the calculus is augmented with extra rules to express the facts of the muddy children scenario.

Constructible sets in lattice-valued models: A negative result

Abstract:We investigate different set-theoretic constructions in Residuated Logic based on Fitting's work on Intuitionistic Set Theory. We start by stating some results concerning constructible sets within valued models of Set Theory. We present two distinct constructions of the constructible universe: $\mathfrak{L}^{\mathbb{Q}}$ and $\mathbb{L}^{\mathbb{Q}}$, and show that they are isomorphic to V (the classical von Neumann universe) and L (the classical Gödel constructible universe), respectively. Even though lattice-valued models are the natural way to study non-classical Set Theory (e.g., Intuitionistic, Residuated, Paraconsistent Set Theory),our results prove that the use of lattice-valued models is not suitable to study the notion of constructibility in logics weaker than classical logic.

Abstract:There are standard logics DTC, TC, and LFP capturing the complexity classes L, NL, and P on ordered structures, respectively. In [4] we have shown that LFP_{inv}, the ``order-invariant least fixed-point logic LFP,'' captures P (on all finite structures) if and only if there is a listing of the P subsets of the set TAUT of propositional tautologies. We are able to extend the result to listings of the L-subsets (NL-subsets) of TAUT and the logic DTC_{inv} (TC_{inv}). As a byproduct we get that LFP_{inv} captures P if DTC_{inv} captures L. Furthermore, we show that the existence of a listing of the L-subsets of TAUT is equivalent to the existence of an almost space optimal algorithm for TAUT. To obtain this result we have to derive a space version of a theorem of Levin on optimal inverters.

Abstract:We give a new, direct proof of the tetrachotomy classification for the model-checking problem of positive equality-free logic parameterised by the model. The four complexity classes are Logspace, NP-complete, co-NP-complete and Pspace-complete. The previous proof of this result relied on notions from universal algebra and core-like structures called U-X-cores. This new proof uses only relations, and works for infinite structures also in the distinction between Logspace and NP-hard under Turing reductions. For finite domains, the membership in NP and co-NP follows from a simple argument, which breaks down already over an infinite set with a binary relation. We develop some interesting new algorithms to solve NP and co-NP membership for a variety of infinite structures. We begin with those first-order definable in (Q;=), the so-called equality languages, then move to those first-order definable in (Q;<), the so-called temporal languages. However, it is first-order expansions of the Random Graph (V,E) that provide the most interesting examples. In all of these cases, the derived classification is a tetrachotomy between Logspace, NP-complete, co-NP-complete and Pspace-complete.

Abstract:Correspondence theory allows us to create sound and complete axiomatizations for modal logic on frames with certain properties. For example, if we restrict ourselves to transitive frames we should add the axiom $\square \phi \rightarrow \square\square\phi$ which, among other things, can be interpreted as positive introspection. One limitation of this technique is that the frame property and the axiom are assumed to hold globally, i.e., the relation is transitive throughout the frame, and the agent's knowledge satisfies positive introspection in every world. In a modal logic with local properties, we can reason about properties that are not global. So, for example, transitivity might hold only in certain parts of the model and, as a result, the agent's knowledge might satisfy positive introspection in some worlds but not in others. Van Ditmarsch et al. (2012) introduced sound and complete axiomatizations for modal logics with certain local properties. Unfortunately, those axiomatizations are rather complex. Here, we introduce far simpler axiomatizations for a wide range of local properties.

On retract rationality for finite connected group schemes

Abstract:In the present paper, we prove the retract rationality of the classifying spaces $BG$ for several types of finite connected group schemes $G$ over algebraically closed fields $k$ of positive characteristic $p>0$. In particular, we prove the retract rationality for the finite simple group schemes $G$ associated with the generalized Witt algebras in specific cases. To this end, we study the automorphism group schemes of the generalized Witt algebras and establish triangulations for them. Moreover, we extend the notion of Witt--Ree algebra to general base rings and discuss their properties.

Abstract:There is a well-known inclusion $\iota_\mathscr{E}$ of a topos $\mathscr{E}$ in the linguistic topos $\mathscr{T}(\Sigma)$ of its internal language $\Sigma$ that proves both toposes to be equivalent. There is also a canonical translation $\eta_S$ for any local set theory $S$ into the local set theory $\Sigma$ of its linguistic topos. Starting from a local set theory, this yields two a priori distinct inclusions from $\mathscr{T}(S)$ to $\mathscr{T}(\Sigma)$. Herein, these two functors are proved to be isomorphic. Furthermore, the concept of logical parameterization is investigated and then applied to see that $\iota_{\mathscr{T}(S)}$ parameterizes $\mathscr{T}(\eta_S)$ in such a way that syntactic $S$-functions are represented by themselves in $\Sigma$.

On the Local Lifting Properties of Operator Spaces

Abstract:In this paper, we mainly study operator spaces which have the locally lifting property (UP). The dual of any ternary ring of operators is shown to satisfy the strongly local reflexivity, and this is used to prove that strongly local reflexivity holds also for operator spaces which have the LLP. Several homological characterizations of the UP and weak expectation property are given. We also prove that for any operator space V, V** has the LLP if and only if V has the LLP and V* is exact.
Positive and monotone fragments of FO and LTL

Abstract:We study the positive logic FO+ on finite words, and its fragments, pursuing and refining the work initiated in [Kuperberg 2023]. First, we transpose notorious logic equivalences into positive first-order logic: FO+ is equivalent to LTL+ , and its two-variable fragment FO2+ with (resp. without) successor available is equivalent to UTL+ with (resp. without) the "next" operator X available. This shows that despite previous negative results, the class of FO+-definable languages exhibits some form of robustness. We then exhibit an example of an FO-definable monotone language on one predicate, that is not FO+-definable, refining the example from [Kuperberg 2023] with 3 predicates. Moreover, we show that such a counter-example cannot be FO2-definable.

Abstract:We establish an unbounded version of Stinespring's Theorem and a lifting result for Stinespring representations of completely positive modular maps defined on the space of all compact operators. We apply these results to study positivity for Schur multipliers. We characterise positive local Schur multipliers, and provide a description of positive local Schur multipliers of Toeplitz type. We introduce local operator multipliers as a non-commutative analogue of local Schur multipliers, and characterise them extending both the characterisation of operator multipliers from [16] and that of local Schur multipliers from [27]. We provide a description of the positive local operator multipliers in terms of approximation by elements of canonical positive cones.

Abstract:In the product $L_1\times L_2$ of two Kripke complete consistent logics, local tabularity of $L_1$ and $L_2$ is necessary for local tabularity of $L_1\times L_2$. However, it is not sufficient: the product of two locally tabular logics can be not locally tabular. We provide extra semantic and axiomatic conditions which give criteria of local tabularity of the product of two locally tabular logics. Then we apply them to identify new families of locally tabular products.

Abstract:For each $n\in\mathbb{N}$, let $[n]\phi$ mean "the sentence $\phi$ is true in all $\Sigma_{n+1}$-correct transitive sets." Assuming G\"odel's axiom $V = L$, we prove the following graded variant of Solovay's completeness theorem: the set of formulas valid under this interpretation is precisely the set of theorems of the linear provability logic GLP.3. We also show that this result is not provable in ZFC, so the hypothesis V = L cannot be removed. As part of the proof, we derive (in ZFC) the following purely modal-logical results which are of independent interest: the logic GLP.3 coincides with the logic of closed substitutions of GLP, and is the maximal non-degenerate, normal extension of GLP.

Abstract:In this article, we study various properties of holomorphic retracts in Lempert domains. We associate the existence and the related form of holomorphic retracts with the linear ones, provide non-trivial examples and discuss their properties in a quite general setting. Later we specialize on two Lempert domains which are the Lie ball of dimension three and its $2$-proper holomorphic image, that is, the tetrablock and give a complete description of holomorphic retracts in these domains.

Abstract:We study Polynomial Lawvere logic PL, a logic defined over the Lawvere quantale of extended positive reals with sum as tensor, to which we add multiplication, thereby obtaining a semiring structure. PL is designed for complex quantitative reasoning, allowing judgements that express inequalities between polynomials on the extended positive reals. We introduce a deduction system and demonstrate its expressiveness by deriving a classical result from probability theory relating the Kantorovich and the total variation distances. Although the deductive system is not complete in general, we achieve completeness for finitely axiomatizable theories. The proof of completeness relies on the Krivine-Stengle Positivstellensatz (a variant of Hilbert's Nullstellensatz). Additionally, we provide new complexity results, both for PL and its affine fragment AL, regarding two decision problems: satisfiability of a set of judgements and semantical consequence from a set of judgements. The former is NP-complete in AL and in PSPACE for PL; the latter is co-NP complete in PL and in PSPACE for PL.
