Abstract:Drone security is currently a major topic of discussion among researchers and industrialists. Although there are multiple applications of drones, if the security challenges are not anticipated and required architectural changes are not made, the upcoming drone applications will not be able to serve their actual purpose. Therefore, in this paper, we present a detailed review of the security-critical drone applications, and security-related challenges in drone communication such as DoS attacks, Man-in-the-middle attacks, De-Authentication attacks, and so on. Furthermore, as part of solution architectures, the use of Blockchain, Software Defined Networks (SDN), Machine Learning, and Fog/Edge computing are discussed as these are the most emerging technologies. Drones are highly resource-constrained devices and therefore it is not possible to deploy heavy security algorithms on board. Blockchain can be used to cryptographically store all the data that is sent to/from the drones, thereby saving it from tampering and eavesdropping. Various ML algorithms can be used to detect malicious drones in the network and to detect safe routes. Additionally, the SDN technology can be used to make the drone network reliable by allowing the controller to keep a close check on data traffic, and fog computing can be used to keep the computation capabilities closer to the drones without overloading them.

Abstract:With the rapid technological development of robust and intelligent UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles), typically referred to as drones, much opportunities have emerged to provide DraaS (Drone-as-a-Service) to help industries such as agriculture, energy and utilities, GIS, package delivery, cinematography, industrial inspection and many more. The capability of drones to lift payload, acquire data with camera and sensors mounted on it make drones as a useful tool for various commercial applications. However, there exist great challenges for executing autonomous missions, operations, management, ensuring safety and secure communications. In this research paper, we review the latest research in the field of Artificial Intelligence and Blockchain applied for DraaS. Blockchain being a distributed ledger protects the shared data using cryptography techniques such as hash functions and public key encryption. It can also be used for assuring the truthfulness of the information stored and for improving the security and transparency of the UAVs. The integration of AI contributes more intelligence to the system enabling informed decision making and eventually converting drones into vehicles capable of executing autonomous missions in the real-world.

Abstract:An authentication protocol is one of the fundamental security mechanisms in distributed systems to ensure the integrity and trust level of the nodes during communication. Since message passing is the only way of communication among the systems covered under such an environment, it becomes a necessary condition to check the valid authenticity of the nodes before sending any sensitive information. Such kind of communication between any homogeneous and heterogenous entities (also principals) like, clients, servers, processes etc., must be secure by differentiating the actual legitimate node and intruder node. This process seems to be complex due to the absence of any centralized authority. Nowadays, unmanned aerial vehicle (also, drone)-based network (flying ad hoc network) is in trend due to their versatile dynamic behavior and high applicability region in real-time applications and can be viewed as a special form of distributed network with flying objects. This technology itself is highly capable of carrying any sensitive information from one location to another and also requires much attention for node authentication during the information exchange, which is limited in the existing literature. Hence through our presented work, we studied various distributed authentication protocols and analyzed their possible exposure to flying ad hoc networks. This proposed art-of-study helps to build a sequential relationship to evolve such authentication protocols and opens a unique dimension for flying networks with secure data transfer using these protocols.

Abstract:<p>Nowadays, the exponential increase in the usage of drones in various realms of societal and military applications necessitates advancements and stability in drone communication. Drones have proven their potential in providing real‐time cost‐efficient solutions for several applications like healthcare, smart grid surveillance, smart city monitoring, and border surveillance. Though it has many security and privacy issues, researchers across the globe have given numerous solutions to protect drone communication from cyber‐attacks. Most of these solutions were based on cryptographic techniques and are highly compute extensive. There exist few blockchain‐based solutions, which suffer from high transaction storage costs with communication reliability, latency, and bandwidth issues. Motivated by these facts, in this paper, we present a comprehensive survey to secure drone communication and propose a blockchain‐based secure and intelligent drone communication architecture underlying 5G communication network and artificial intelligence (AI) techniques. The proposed architecture uses an InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) as a platform for data storage, which ensures improved network performance, communication security and privacy, and reduces transaction storage cost. Further, it facilitates efficient drone communication in providing dynamic, flexible, and on‐the‐fly decisions competencies through 5G and AI technologies. Then, we incorporate a healthcare‐based case study using the proposed architecture. At last, future research challenges and directions are emphasized for improvement in this research area.</p>

Abstract:One of the most significant recent advances in technology is the advent of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), i.e., drones. They have widened the scope of possible applications and provided a platform for a wide range of creative responses to a variety of challenges. The Internet of Drones (IoD) is a relatively new concept that has arisen as a consequence of the combination of drones and the Internet. The fifth-generation (5G) and beyond cellular networks (i.e., drones in networks beyond 5G) are promising solutions for achieving safe drone operations and applications. They may have many applications, like surveillance or urban areas, security, surveillance, retaliation, delivering items, smart farming, film production, capturing nature videos, and many more. Due to the fact that it is susceptible to a wide variety of cyber-attacks, there are certain concerns regarding the privacy and security of IoD communications. In this paper, a secure blockchain-enabled authentication key management framework with the big data analytics feature for drones in networks beyond 5G applications is proposed (in short, SBBDA-IoD). The security of SBBDA-IoD against multiple attacks is demonstrated through a detailed security analysis. The Scyther tool is used to perform a formal security verification test on the SBBDA-IoD’s security, confirming the system’s resistance to various potential attacks. A detailed comparative analysis has identified that SBBDA-IoD outperforms the other schemes by a significant margin. Finally, a real-world implementation of SBBDA-IoD is shown to evaluate its effect on several measures of performance.

Abstract:The small-drone technology domain is the outcome of a breakthrough in technological advancement for drones. The Internet of Things (IoT) is used by drones to provide inter-location services for navigation. But, due to issues related to their architecture and design, drones are not immune to threats related to security and privacy. Establishing a secure and reliable network is essential to obtaining optimal performance from drones. While small drones offer promising avenues for growth in civil and defense industries, they are prone to attacks on safety, security, and privacy. The current architecture of small drones necessitates modifications to their data transformation and privacy mechanisms to align with domain requirements. This research paper investigates the latest trends in safety, security, and privacy related to drones, and the Internet of Drones (IoD), highlighting the importance of secure drone networks that are impervious to interceptions and intrusions. To mitigate cyber-security threats, the proposed framework incorporates intelligent machine learning models into the design and structure of IoT-aided drones, rendering adaptable and secure technology. Furthermore, in this work, a new dataset is constructed, a merged dataset comprising a drone dataset and two benchmark datasets. The proposed strategy outperforms the previous algorithms and achieves 99.89% accuracy on the drone dataset and 91.64% on the merged dataset. Overall, this intelligent framework gives a potential approach to improving the security and resilience of cyber-physical satellite systems, and IoT-aided aerial vehicle systems, addressing the rising security challenges in an interconnected world.

Abstract:Abstract Internet of Drones (IoD) facilitates the autonomous operations of drones into every application (warfare, surveillance, photography, etc) across the world. The transmission of data (to and fro) related to these applications occur between the drones and the other infrastructure over wireless channels that must abide to the stringent latency restrictions. However, relaying this data to the core cloud infrastructure may lead to a higher round trip delay. Thus, we utilize the cloud close to the ground, i.e., edge computing to realize an edge-envisioned IoD ecosystem. However, as this data is relayed over an open communication channel, it is often prone to different types of attacks due to it wider attack surface. Thus, we need to find a robust solution that can maintain the confidentiality, integrity, and authenticity of the data while providing desired services. Blockchain technology is capable to handle these challenges owing to the distributed ledger that store the data immutably. However, the conventional block architecture pose several challenges because of limited computational capabilities of drones. As the size of blockchain increases, the data flow also increases and so does the associated challenges. Hence, to overcome these challenges, in this work, we have proposed a derived blockchain architecture that decouples the data part (or block ledger) from the block header and shifts it to off-chain storage. In our approach, the registration of a new drone is performed to enable legitimate access control thus ensuring identity management and traceability. Further, the interactions happen in the form of transactions of the blockchain. We propose a lightweight consensus mechanism based on the stochastic selection followed by a transaction signing process to ensure that each drone is in control of its block. The proposed scheme also handles the expanding storage requirements with the help of data compression using a shrinking block mechanism. Lastly, the problem of additional delay anticipated due to drone mobility is handled using a multi-level caching mechanism. The proposed work has been validated in a simulated Gazebo environment and the results are promising in terms of different metrics. We have also provided numerical validations in context of complexity, communication overheads and computation costs.

Abstract:The utility of virtual circuit (VC) based devices - UAVs, Drones, and similar other IoT based devices have gained immense momentum in the present day and age. These devices are predominantly used for aerial surveying in sensitive and remote areas. It is alarming that issues pertaining to stalking and information control have increased with the growth of technology. This paper presents a Blockchain Technology (BCT) based solution to improve the security and privacy of VC based device data. The proposed design is evaluated by implementing an IoT based application in a virtual vehicle monitoring system. The technical information about the instructions to the vehicle (devices), authentication, integrity, and vehicle reactions are stored in a cloud platform wherein Pentatope based Elliptic curve cryptography and SHA are used to ensure privacy in data storage. The data is later stored in an Ethereum based public blockchain to enable seamless BCT transactions. This system uses the Ganache platform for BCT that ensures data protection and privacy. Furthermore, metamask wallet for Ethbalance is required to perform transactions over BCT. The proposed methodology thus helps to protect data from stalkers, plaintext attacks as well as ciphertext attacks. The results, when compared with the state-of-the-art, justify the efficiency and security aspects of the proposed approach.

Abstract:The emergence of drone-based innovative cyber security solutions integrated with the Internet of Things (IoT) has revolutionized navigational technologies with robust data communication services across multiple platforms. This advancement leverages machine learning and deep learning methods for future progress. In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the utilization of IoT-enabled drone data management technology. Industries ranging from industrial applications to agricultural advancements, as well as the implementation of smart cities for intelligent and efficient monitoring. However, these latest trends and drone-enabled IoT technology developments have also opened doors to malicious exploitation of existing IoT infrastructures. This raises concerns regarding the vulnerability of drone networks and security risks due to inherent design flaws and the lack of cybersecurity solutions and standards. The main objective of this study is to examine the latest privacy and security challenges impacting the network of drones (NoD). The research underscores the significance of establishing a secure and fortified drone network to mitigate interception and intrusion risks. The proposed system effectively detects cyber-attacks in drone networks by leveraging deep learning and machine learning techniques. Furthermore, the model's performance was evaluated using well-known drones' CICIDS2017, and KDDCup 99 datasets. We have tested the multiple hyperparameter parameters for optimal performance and classify data instances and maximum efficacy in the NoD framework. The model achieved exceptional efficiency and robustness in NoD, specifically while applying B-LSTM and LSTM. The system attains precision values of 89.10% and 90.16%, accuracy rates up to 91.00-91.36%, recall values of 81.13% and 90.11%, and F-measure values of 88.11% and 90.19% for the respective evaluation metrics.

Abstract:While 5G can facilitate high-speed Internet access and make over-the-horizon control a reality for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs; also known as drones), there are also potential security and privacy considerations, for example, authentication among drones. Centralized authentication approaches not only suffer from a single point of failure but they are also incapable of cross-domain authentication. This complicates the cooperation of drones from different domains. To address these limitations, a blockchain-based cross-domain authentication scheme for intelligent 5G-enabled Internet of drones is proposed in this article. Our approach employs multiple signatures based on threshold sharing to build an identity federation for collaborative domains. This allows us to support domain joining and exiting. Reliable communication between cross-domain devices is achieved by utilizing smart contract for authentication. The session keys are negotiated to secure subsequent communication between two parties. Our security and performance evaluations show that the proposed scheme is resistant to common attacks targeting Internet of Things (IoT) devices (including drones), as well as demonstrating its effectiveness and efficiency.

Abstract:The purpose of this abstract is to present a concise summary of a study that sought to enhance the cybersecurity of 6G-IoT drone devices through the use of a layered architectural framework and machine learning methodologies. An improved seven-layered architecture that can classify various types of attacks with a 99% accuracy rate is presented in the paper as a means to enhance drone security and privacy. You may encounter Prob, DoS, R2L, and U2R assaults, among others. On the drone dataset, the RegressionNet model—a combination of Logistic Regression and Multilayer Perceptron—performs best. Impressively, it attains a rate of 99.89% accuracy. Both the STIN security dataset and a combined dataset underwent additional validation testing, with the combined dataset producing an average accuracy of 97.90% and the STIN security dataset 91.64%, respectively, proving that the suggested method is both effective and resilient. By enhancing the cybersecurity of 6G-IoT drones, We can see the importance of the suggested architecture and ML models from these outcomes. This, in turn, guarantees secure drone operations across many fields while reducing privacy issues.

Abstract:Network security situation assessment (NSSA) is imperative and active defense technology in the network security situation. By examining NSSA data, one can examine the threat of network security and examine the network attack phase and hence fully grasp the complete network security situation. With the quick design of 5 G, the cloud model and Internet of things (IoT), the network platform is increasingly complicated and resulting in diversity of network threats which discover the accuracy. Thus, a new blockchain based cyber-security threat intelligence (CTI) and situational awareness system is devised for intrusion alert prediction. A blockchain-based CTI model is considered where data acquired are allowed to linear normalization. Here, the cyber situational awareness engine is used for alert segregation, which is implemented with entropy weighting power k means algorithm wherein weights generated during alert segregation are updated using Adaptive Transit Search (ATS). Then, the feature selection is implemented using hybrid Soergel and Lorentzian. The selected features are fed to Deep Maxout Network (DMN) for performing intrusion alert prediction. Finally, the cyber attack mitigation is carried out by blacklisting based on predicted result. The modified DMN outperformed with highest F-measure of 95.2%, precision of 96.9% and recall of 94.7%.

Abstract:Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been instrumental in enabling many new applications and services, including military and rescue operations, aerial surveillance, civilian applications, precision farming, as well as providing extensive wireless network access in remote areas. They have also been used in other areas such as transmission line and oil rig monitoring, disaster recovery, etc. With their increasing payload ability and flight duration, using UAVs is a preferred choice for a multitude of upcoming wireless communication systems. However, because of their open operational nature, UAVs are highly vulnerable to severe security breaches via cyber attacks, eavesdropping on navigational and communication links, etc. Given their widespread applications, the requirement of secured UAV communications has become more and more critical since security failures can lead to detrimental consequences. Several works have examined the extent of privacy and security issues in UAV-assisted networks and introduced various mitigation techniques to address different security challenges. In this paper, a comprehensive survey is conducted that centers on the security issues related to UAV-aided networks. A descriptive taxonomy of various security intrusions on the UAV networks and commonly-used secrecy performance metrics are thoroughly reviewed. An in-depth discussion is provided on alleviating threats with proactive security techniques blended with key wireless communication technologies such as mmWave, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), and cognitive radio. Moreover, several emerging topics like machine learning, software-defined networks, fog and edge computing, blockchain, are discussed in the context of UAV-aided secure communications.

Abstract:Internet of Things (IoT)-inspired drone environment is having a greater influence on daily lives in the form of drone-based smart electricity monitoring, traffic routing, and personal healthcare. However, communication between drones and ground control systems must be protected to avoid potential vulnerabilities and improve coordination among scattered UAVs in the IoT context. In the current paper, a distributed UAV scheme is proposed that uses blockchain technology and a network topology similar to the IoT and cloud server to secure communications during data collection and transmission and reduce the likelihood of attack by maliciously manipulated UAVs. As an alternative to relying on a traditional blockchain approach, a unique, safe, and lightweight blockchain architecture is proposed that reduces computing and storage requirements while keeping privacy and security advantages. In addition, a unique reputation-based consensus protocol is built to assure the dependability of the decentralized network. Numerous types of transactions are established to characterize diverse data access. To validate the presented blockchain-based distributed system, performance evaluations are conducted to estimate the statistical effectiveness in the form of temporal delay, packet flow efficacy, precision, specificity, sensitivity, and security efficiency.

Abstract:Thanks to the rapidly developing technology, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are able to complete a number of tasks in cooperation with each other without need for human intervention. In recent years, UAVs, which are widely utilized in military missions, have begun to be deployed in civilian applications and mostly for commercial purposes. With their growing numbers and range of applications, UAVs are becoming more and more popular; on the other hand, they are also the target of various threats which can exploit various vulnerabilities of UAV systems in order to cause destructive effects. It is therefore critical that security is ensured for UAVs and the networks that provide communication between UAVs. This survey seeks to provide a comprehensive perspective on security within the domain of UAVs and FANETs. Our approach incorporates attack surface analysis and aligns it with the identification of potential threats. Additionally, we discuss countermeasures proposed in the existing literature in two categories: preventive and detection strategies. Our primary focus centers on the security challenges inherent to FANETs, acknowledging their susceptibility to insider threats due to their unique characteristics. Consequently, our study involves the simulation and analysis of four distinct routing attacks on FANETs. Hence, this study transcends a standard review by integrating an attack analysis based on extensive simulations. Finally, we rigorously examine open issues, and propose research directions to guide future endeavors in this field.

Abstract:<p>In a wireless Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) network, enforcing security is a challenge due to the large number of devices forming the network and their limited computation capabilities. Furthermore, different security attacks require specifically tailored security protocols to prevent their occurrence. As an alternative to these conventional centralized security protocols, the application of Blockchain (BC) and Deep learning (DL) for securing IIoT networks hold great potential. BC facilitates security by being an immutable record of the changes happening in a network. Coalition Formation theory aids decentralization and promotes energy efficiency. And to enforce a state‐of‐the‐art attack detection technique, Deep learning provides an adaptive and reliable platform. Thus, in this paper, a security framework that facilitates generalized security for the IIoT network using BC and Coalition Formation theory is proposed. Additionally, we promote a sophisticated deep learning‐based classification algorithm to efficiently classify malicious and benign devices in IIoT scenarios. In the proposed model, connection links can only be established if the details of the connection are mined on the BC by the "sender" device. Therefore, we propose a Proof of Reliance algorithm that dynamically increases the computational difficulty to prevent malicious devices from attacking the network. Through simulations, it is experimentally proven that malicious devices can never attack the network when the proposed framework is employed for IIoT security.</p>

Abstract:Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are a rapidly evolving technology, and being highly mobile, UAV systems are able to cooperate with each other to accomplish a wide range of different tasks. UAVs can be used in commercial applications, such as goods delivery, as well as in military surveillance. They can also operate in civil domains like search-and-rescue missions, that require multiple UAVs to collect location data as well as transmit video streams. However, the malicious use of UAVs began to emerge in recent years. The frequency of such attacks has been significantly increasing and their impact can have devastating effects. Hence, the relevant industries and standardisation bodies are exploring possibilities for securing UAV systems and networks.Our survey focuses on UAV security and privacy issues whilst establishing flying ad-hoc networks (FANETs) as well as on threats to the Internet of drones (IoD) infrastructure used to provide control and access over the Internet between UAVs and users. The goal of this survey is to categorise the versatile aspects of the UAV threat landscape and develop a classification approach based on different types of connections and nodes in FANETs and IoD. In particular, we categorise security and privacy threats on connections between UAVs, ground control stations, and personal pilot devices. All the most relevant threats and their corresponding defence mechanisms are classified using characteristics of the first four layers of the OSI model. We then analyse the conventional and novel UAV routing protocols, indicating their advantages and disadvantages from the cyber security perspective. To provide a deeper insight, the reviewed defence mechanisms have undergone a thorough examination of their security requirements and objectives such as availability, authentication, authorisation, confidentiality, integrity, privacy, and non-repudiation. Finally, we discuss the open research challenges, the limitations of current UAV standards, and provide possible future directions for research.

Abstract:In the rapidly evolving landscape of industrial ecosystems, Industrial IoT networks face increasing security challenges. Traditional security methods often struggle to protect these networks adequately, posing risks to data integrity, confidentiality, and access control. Our research introduces a methodology that leverages blockchain technology to enhance the security and trustworthiness of IoT networks. This approach starts with sensor nodes collecting and compressing data, followed by encryption using the ChaCha20-Poly1305 algorithm and transmission to local aggregators. A crucial element of our system is the private blockchain gateway, which processes and classifies data based on confidentiality levels, determining their storage in cloud servers or the Interplanetary File System for enhanced security. The system's integrity and authenticity are further reinforced through the proof of authority consensus mechanism. This system employs Zero Knowledge Proof challenges for device authorization, optimizing data retrieval while maintaining a delicate balance between security and accessibility. Our methodology contributes to mitigating vulnerabilities in Industrial IoT networks and is part of a broader effort to advance the security and operational efficiency of these systems. It reflects an understanding of the diverse and evolving challenges in IoT security, emphasizing the need for continuous innovation and adaptation in this dynamic field.

Abstract:The wide use of unmanned aerial vehicles provides a promising paradigm for improving air-ground services and applications (e.g., urban sensing, disaster relief) in air-ground integrated networks (AGINs). Digital twin (DT), which is an emerging technology that utilizes data, models, and intelligent algorithms to integrate cyber physical networks and digital virtual models, provides a real-time and dynamic simulation platform for strategy optimization and decision making in AGINs. Due to the openness and massive connectivity of AGINs, the security and reliability services in this system become an important issue. In this article, we investigate the DT envisioned secure federated aerial learning for AGINs via an aerial blockchain approach. Specifically, we propose a layered framework of DT envisioned AGINs, which comprises the construction segment, communication segment, aggregation segment, analysis segment, and operation segment. Based on this framework, we offer the applications of the proposed DT envisioned AGINs. To guarantee the security of data transmission in AGINs, we investigate the aerial blockchain-based approach for ensuring data security. Furthermore, we provide a case study of DT envisioned secure federated aerial computing in AGINs to validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach through designing the aerial blockchain and training model.
