Abstract:We consider two approaches to designing fermion-qubit mappings: (1) ternary tree transformations, which use Pauli representations of the Majorana operators that correspond to root-to-leaf paths of a tree graph and (2) linear encodings of the Fock basis, such as the Jordan-Wigner and Bravyi-Kitaev transformations, which store linear binary transformations of the fermionic occupation number vectors in the computational basis of qubits. These approaches have emerged as distinct concepts, with little notational consistency between them. In this paper we propose a universal description of fermion-qubit mappings, which reveals the relationship between ternary tree transformations and linear encodings. Using our notation, we show that every product-preserving ternary tree transformation is equivalent to a linear encoding of the Fock basis.

Logic Synthesis of Ternary Quantum Circuits with Minimal Qutrits

Abstract:This paper investigates a universal approach of synthesizing arbitrary ternary logic circuits in quantum computation based on the truth table technology. It takes into account of the relationship of classical logic and quantum logic circuits. By adding inputs with constant value and garbage outputs, the classical non-reversible logic can be transformed into reversible logic. Combined with group theory, it provides an algorithm using the ternary Swap gate, ternary NOT gate and ternary Toffoli gate library. Simultaneously, the main result shows that the numbers of qutrits we use are minimal compared to other methods. We also illustrate with two examples to test our approach.

Abstract:The Clifford+T gate set is a topological generating set for PU(2), which has been well-studied from the perspective of quantum computation on a single qubit. The discovery that it generates a full S-arithmetic subgroup of PU(2) has led to a fruitful interaction between quantum computation and number theory, resulting in a proof that words in these gates cover PU(2) in an almost-optimal manner. In this paper we study the analogue gate set for PU(3). We show that in PU(3) the group generated by the Clifford+T gates is not arithmetic - in fact, it is a thin matrix group, namely a Zariski-dense group of infinite index in its ambient S-arithmetic group. On the other hand, we study a recently proposed extension of the Clifford+T gates, called Clifford+D, and show that these do generate a full S-arithmetic subgroup of PU(3), and satisfy a slightly weaker almost-optimal covering property than that of Clifford+T in PU(2). The proofs are different from those for PU(2): while both gate sets act naturally on a (Bruhat-Tits) tree, in PU(2) the generated group acts transitively on the vertices of the tree, and this is a main ingredient in proving both arithmeticity and efficiency. In the PU(3) Clifford+D case the action on the tree is far from being transitive. This makes the proof of arithmeticity considerably harder, and the study of efficiency by automorphic representation theory becomes more involved, and results in a covering rate which differs from the optimal one by a factor of $log_3(105)\approx 4.236$.

Abstract:This paper investigates the synthesis of quantum networks built to realize ternary switching circuits in the absence of ancilla bits. The results we established are twofold. The first shows that ternary Swap, ternary NOT and ternary Toffoli gates are universal for the realization of arbitrary n x n ternary quantum switching networks without ancilla bits. The second result proves that all n x n quantum ternary networks can be generated by NOT, Controlled-NOT, Multiply-Two and Toffoli gates. Our approach is constructive.

Abstract:The paper presents the results of computation of some simple internal flows of incompressible fluid with the software package CFX-5. In the previous paper of the author, the same flows were used for testing of another CFD software tool, FlowVision. The model equations used for this research are again the set of Reynolds and continuity equations and equations of the standard k - e turbulence model. The results of computation of a number of internal fluid flows in channels are presented and comparison with known experimental data is performed. Good correspondence of results was obtained both concerning the flow pattern and related integral values.

A Sierpinski Triangle Fermion-to-Qubit Transform

Abstract:In order to simulate a system of fermions on a quantum computer, it is necessary to represent the fermionic states and operators on qubits. This can be accomplished in multiple ways, including the well-known Jordan-Wigner transform, as well as the parity, Bravyi-Kitaev, and ternary tree encodings. Notably, the Bravyi-Kitaev encoding can be described in terms of a classical data structure, the Fenwick tree. Here we establish a correspondence between a class of classical data structures similar to the Fenwick tree, and a class of one-to-one fermion-to-qubit transforms. We present a novel fermion-to-qubit encoding based on the recently discovered "Sierpinski tree" data structure, which matches the operator locality of the ternary tree encoding, and has the additional benefit of encoding the fermionic states as computational basis states. This is analogous to the formulation of the Bravyi-Kitaev encoding in terms of the Fenwick tree.

Simulating quantum circuits using tree tensor networks

Abstract:We develop and analyze a method for simulating quantum circuits on classical computers by representing quantum states as rooted tree tensor networks. Our algorithm first determines a suitable, fixed tree structure adapted to the expected entanglement generated by the quantum circuit. The gates are sequentially applied to the tree by absorbing single-qubit gates into leaf nodes, and splitting two-qubit gates via singular value decomposition and threading the resulting virtual bond through the tree. We theoretically analyze the applicability of the method as well as its computational cost and memory requirements, and identify advantageous scenarios in terms of required bond dimensions as compared to a matrix product state representation. The study is complemented by numerical experiments for different quantum circuit layouts up to 37 qubits.

Abstract:In a topological quantum computer, braids of non-Abelian anyons in a (2+1)-dimensional space time form quantum gates, whose fault tolerance relies on the topological, rather than geometric, properties of the braids. Here we propose to create and exploit redundant geometric degrees of freedom to improve the theoretical accuracy of topological single-and two-qubit quantum gates. We demonstrate the power of the idea using explicit constructions in the Fibonacci model. We compare its efficiency with that of the Solovay-Kitaev algorithm and explain its connection to the leakage errors reduction in an earlier construction [H. Xu and X. Wan, Phys. Rev. A 78, 042325 (2008)].

Abstract:In topology, a torus remains invariant under certain nontrivial transformations known as modular transformations. In the context of topologically ordered quantum states of matter supported on a torus geometry in real space, these transformations encode the braiding statistics and fusion rules of emergent anyonic excitations and thus serve as a diagnostic of topological order. Moreover, modular transformations of higher genus surfaces, e.g., a torus with multiple handles, can enhance the computational power of a topological state, in many cases providing a universal fault-tolerant set of gates for quantum computation. However, due to the intrusive nature of modular transformations, which abstractly involve global operations, physical implementations of them in local systems have remained elusive. Here, we show that by engineering an effectively folded manifold corresponding to a multilayer topological system, modular transformations can be applied in a single shot by independent local unitaries, providing a novel class of transversal logical gates for fault-tolerant quantum computation. Specifically, we demonstrate that multilayer topological states with appropriate boundary conditions and twist defects allow modular transformations to be effectively implemented by a finite sequence of local SWAP gates between the layers. We further provide methods to directly measure the modular matrices, and thus the fractional statistics of anyonic excitations, providing a novel way to directly measure topological order. A more general theory of transversal gates and the deep connection to anyon symmetry transformation and symmetry-enriched topological orders are also discussed.

Exact Synthesis of Multiqutrit Clifford-Cyclotomic Circuits

Abstract:It is known that the matrices that can be exactly represented by a multiqubit circuit over the Toffoli+Hadamard, Clifford+$T$, or, more generally, Clifford-cyclotomic gate set are precisely the unitary matrices with entries in the ring $\mathbb{Z}[1/2,\zeta_k]$, where $k$ is a positive integer that depends on the gate set and $\zeta_k$ is a primitive $2^k$-th root of unity. In the present paper, we establish an analogous correspondence for qutrits. We define the multiqutrit Clifford-cyclotomic gate set of degree $3^k$ by extending the classical qutrit gates $X$, $CX$, and $CCX$ with the Hadamard gate $H$ and the $T_k$ gate $T_k=\mathrm{diag}(1,\omega_k, \omega_k^2)$, where $\omega_k$ is a primitive $3^k$-th root of unity. This gate set is equivalent to the qutrit Toffoli+Hadamard gate set when $k=1$, and to the qutrit Clifford+$T_k$ gate set when $k>1$. We then prove that a $3^n\times 3^n$ unitary matrix $U$ can be represented by an $n$-qutrit circuit over the Clifford-cyclotomic gate set of degree $3^k$ if and only if the entries of $U$ lie in the ring $\mathbb{Z}[1/3,\omega_k]$.

Permutation gates in the third level of the Clifford hierarchy

Abstract:The Clifford hierarchy is a fundamental structure in quantum computation, classifying unitary operators based on their commutation relations with the Pauli group. Despite its significance, the mathematical structure of the hierarchy is not well understood at the third level and higher. In this work, we study permutations in the hierarchy: gates which permute the $2^n$ basis states. We fully characterize all the semi-Clifford permutation gates. Moreover, we prove that any permutation gate in the third level, not necessarily semi-Clifford, must be a product of Toffoli gates in what we define as staircase form, up to left and right multiplications of Clifford permutations. Finally, we show that the smallest number of qubits for which there exists a non-semi-Clifford permutation in the third level is $7$.

Abstract:The circuit model of quantum computation can be interpreted as a scattering process. In particular, factorised scattering operators result in integrable quantum circuits that provide universal quantum computation and are potentially less noisy. These are realized through Yang-Baxter or 2-simplex operators. A natural question is to extend this construction to higher qubit gates, like the Toffoli gates, which also lead to universal quantum computation but with shallower circuits. We show that unitary families of such operators are constructed by the 3-dimensional generalizations of the Yang-Baxter operators known as tetrahedron or 3-simplex operators. The latter satisfy a spectral parameter-dependent tetrahedron equation. This construction goes through for $n$-Toffoli gates realized using $n$-simplex operators.

Abstract:We show how to efficiently simulate a quantum many-body system with tree structure when its entanglement (Schmidt number) is small for any bipartite split along an edge of the tree. As an application, we show that any one-way quantum computation on a tree graph can be efficiently simulated with a classical computer.

Abstract:Motivated by their central role in fault-tolerant quantum computation, we study the sets of gates of the third-level of the Clifford hierarchy and their distinguished subsets of `nearly diagonal' semi-Clifford gates. The Clifford hierarchy gates can be implemented via gate teleportation given appropriate magic states. The vast quantity of these resource states required for achieving fault-tolerance is a significant bottleneck for the practical realisation of universal quantum computers. Semi-Clifford gates are important because they can be implemented with far more efficient use of these resource states. We prove that every third-level gate of up to two qudits is semi-Clifford. We thus generalise results of Zeng-Chen-Chuang (2008) in the qubit case and of the second author (2020) in the qutrit case to the case of qudits of arbitrary prime dimension $d$. Earlier results relied on exhaustive computations whereas our present work leverages tools of algebraic geometry. Specifically, we construct two schemes corresponding to the sets of third-level Clifford hierarchy gates and third-level semi-Clifford gates. We then show that the two algebraic sets resulting from reducing these schemes modulo $d$ share the same set of rational points.

Abstract:Quantum simulations of many-body systems using 2-qubit Yang-Baxter gates offer a benchmark for quantum hardware. This can be extended to the higher dimensional case with $n$-qubit generalisations of Yang-Baxter gates called $n$-simplex operators. Such multi-qubit gates potentially lead to shallower and more efficient quantum circuits as well. Finding them amounts to identifying unitary solutions of the $n$-simplex equations, the building blocks of higher dimensional integrable systems. These are a set of highly non-linear and over determined system of equations making it notoriously hard to solve even when the local Hilbert spaces are spanned by qubits. We systematically overcome this for higher simplex operators constructed using two methods: from Clifford algebras and by lifting Yang-Baxter operators. The $n=3$ or the tetrahedron case is analyzed in detail. For the qubit case our methods produce 13 inequivalent families of unitary tetrahedron operators. 12 of these families are obtained by appending the 5 unitary families of 4 by 4 constant Yang-Baxter operators of Dye-Hietarinta, with a single qubit operator. As applications, universal sets of single, two and three qubit gates are realized using such unitary tetrahedron operators. The ideas presented in this work can be naturally extended to the higher simplex cases.

Abstract:Quantum state transfer is one of the basic tasks in quantum information processing. We here propose a theoretical approach to realize arbitrary entangled state transfer through a qubit chain, which is a class of extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger models and accommodates multiple topological edge states separated from the bulk states. We show that an arbitrary entangled state, from $2$-qubit to $\mathcal{N}$-qubit, can be encoded in the corresponding edge states, and then adiabatically transferred from one end to the other of the chain. The dynamical phase differences resulting from the time evolutions of different edge states can be eliminated by properly choosing evolution time. Our approach is robust against both the qubit-qubit coupling disorder and the evolution time disorder. For the concreteness of discussions, we assume that such a chain is constructed by an experimentally feasible superconducting qubit system, meanwhile, our proposal can also be applied to other systems.
Clifford Orbits from Cayley Graph Quotients

Abstract:We describe the structure of the $n$-qubit Clifford group $\mathcal{C}_n$ via Cayley graphs, whose vertices represent group elements and edges represent generators. In order to obtain the action of Clifford gates on a given quantum state, we introduce a quotient procedure. Quotienting the Cayley graph by the stabilizer subgroup of a state gives a reduced graph which depicts the state's Clifford orbit. Using this protocol for $\mathcal{C}_2$, we reproduce and generalize the reachability graphs introduced in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2204.07593" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2204.07593">arXiv:2204.07593</a>. Since the procedure is state-independent, we extend our study to non-stabilizer states, including the W and Dicke states. Our new construction provides a more precise understanding of state evolution under Clifford circuit action.

Abstract:We extend the concept of dual unitary quantum gates to quantum lattice models in $2 + 1$ dimensions, by introducing and studying ternary unitary four-particle gates, which are unitary in time and both spatial dimensions. When used as building blocks of lattice models with periodic boundary conditions in time and space (corresponding to infinite temperature states), dynamical correlation functions exhibit a light-ray structure. We also generalize solvable MPS to two spatial dimensions with cylindrical boundary conditions, by showing that the analogous solvable PEPS can be identified with matrix product unitaries. In the resulting tensor network for evaluating equal-time correlation functions, the bulk ternary unitary gates cancel out. We delineate and implement a numerical algorithm for computing such correlations by contracting the remaining tensors.

Quantum Ternary Circuit Synthesis Using Projection Operations

Abstract:Basic logic gates and their operations in ternary quantum domain are involved in the synthesis of ternary quantum circuits. Only a few works define ternary algebra for ternary quantum logic realization. In this paper, a ternary logic function is expressed in terms of projection operations including a new one. A method to realize new multi-qutrit ternary gates in terms of generalized ternary gates and projection operations is also presented. We also introduced ten simplification rules for reducing ancilla qutrits and gate levels. Our method yields lower gate cost and fewer gate levels and ancilla qutrits than that obtained by earlier methods for the ternary benchmark circuits. The $n$ qutrit ternary sum function is synthesized without any ancilla qutrit by our proposed methodology.

Abstract:Aiming at a ternary quantum logic circuit, four symmetric ternary quantum homomorphic encryption schemes, based on ternary quantum one-time protocol, were presented. First, for a one-qutrit rotation gate, a homomorphic quantum encryption scheme was constructed. Second, in view of the synthesis of a 3x3 general unitary transformation, another one-qutrit quantum homomorphic encryption scheme was proposed. Third, according to the one-qutrit scheme, the two-qutrit quantum homomorphic encryption scheme about GCX(m') gate was constructed and was further generalized to the n-qutrit unitary matrix case. Finally, the security of these schemes was analyzed from two perspectives. It could be concluded that the attacker can correctly guess the encryption key with a maximum probability ${p_k} = {1 \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {1 {{3^{3n}}}}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {{3^{3n}}}}$, thus it can better protect the privacy of users' data. Moreover these schemes can be well integrated into future quantum remote server architecture, and the computational security of the user's private quantum information can be well solved in a distributed computing environment.
