Abstract:We endow the cohomology of configuration spaces of a manifold with a product arising from superposing configurations. We prove that, under the scanning isomorphism, this product corresponds to the cup-product of the section space of the standard scanning bundle of the manifold.

Abstract:After 1-point compactification, the collection of all unordered configuration spaces of a manifold admits a commutative multiplication by superposition of configurations. We explain a simple (derived) presentation for this commutative monoid object. Using this presentation, one can quickly deduce Knudsen's formula for the rational cohomology of configuration spaces, prove rational homological stability, and understand how automorphisms of the manifold act on the cohomology of configuration spaces. Similar considerations reproduce the work of Farb--Wolfson--Wood on homological densities.

Abstract:The space of degree d smooth projective hypersurfaces of CP n admits a scanning map to a certain space of sections. We compute a rational homotopy model of the action by conjugation of the group U (n + 1) on this space of sections, from which we deduce that the scanning map induces a monomorphism on cohomology when d > 2. Our main technique is the rational homotopy theory of Sullivan and, more specifically, a Sullivan model for the action by conjugation of a connected topological group on a space of sections.

Scanning the moduli of smooth hypersurfaces

Abstract:We study the locus of smooth hypersurfaces inside the Hilbert scheme of a smooth projective complex variety. In the spirit of scanning, we construct a map to a continuous section space of a projective bundle, and show that it induces an isomorphism in integral homology in a range of degrees growing with the ampleness of the hypersurfaces. When the ambient variety is a curve, this recovers a result of McDuff about configuration spaces. We compute the rational cohomology of the section space and exhibit a phenomenon of homological stability for hypersurfaces with first Chern class going to infinity. For simply connected varieties, the rational cohomology is shown to agree with the stable cohomology of a moduli space of hypersurfaces, with a peculiar tangential structure, as studied by Galatius and Randal-Williams.

Spanning subspace configurations

Abstract:{\em spanning configuration} in the complex vector space $\mathbb{C}^k$ is a sequence $(W_1, \dots, W_r)$ of linear subspaces of $\mathbb{C}^k$ such that $W_1 + \cdots + W_r = \mathbb{C}^k$. We present the integral cohomology of the moduli space of spanning configurations in $\mathbb{C}^k$ corresponding to a given sequence of subspace dimensions. This simultaneously generalizes the classical presentation of the cohomology of partial flag varieties and the more recent presentation of a variety of spanning line configurations defined by the author and Pawlowski. This latter variety of spanning line configurations plays the role of the flag variety for the Haglund-Remmel-Wilson Delta Conjecture of symmetric function theory.

Abstract:In the theory of configuration spaces, "splitting" usually refers to the phenomenon that the configuration spaces on a manifold and those on its punctured version are closely related cohomologically. We prove a splitting theorem that is equivariant and mixed-Hodge-theoretic; both are new features in such results. As an application, we determine the generating function for the mixed Hodge numbers of the unordered configuration spaces of a multi-punctured elliptic curve.

Abstract:In this note we describe a family of arguments that link the homotopy-type of a) the diffeomorphism group of the disc $D^n$, b) the space of co-dimension one embedded spheres in a sphere and c) the homotopy-type of the space of co-dimension two trivial knots in a sphere. We also describe some natural extensions to these arguments. We begin with Cerf's `upgraded' proof of Smale's theorem, that the diffeomorphism group of the 2-sphere has the homotopy-type of the isometry group. This entails a canceling-handle construction, related to the `scanning' maps of Budney-Gabai. We further give a Bott-style variation on Cerf's construction, and a related Embedding Calculus framework for these constructions. We use these arguments to prove that the monoid of Schoenflies spheres is a group with respect to the connect-sum operation. This last result is perhaps only interesting when in dimension four, as in other dimensions it follows from the resolution of the various generalized Schoenflies problems.

Abstract:We study ordered configuration spaces of compact manifolds with boundary. We show that for a large class of such manifolds, the real homotopy type of the configuration spaces only depends on the real homotopy type of the pair consisting of the manifold and its boundary. We moreover describe explicit real models of these configuration spaces using three different approaches. We do this by adapting previous constructions for configuration spaces of closed manifolds which relied on Kontsevich's proof of the formality of the little disks operads. We also prove that our models are compatible with the richer structure of configuration spaces, respectively a module over the Swiss-Cheese operad, a module over the associative algebra of configurations in a collar around the boundary of the manifold, and a module over the little disks operad.

Abstract:We show that two natural and a priori unrelated structures encapsulate the same data, namely certain commutative and associative product structures and a class of superintegrable Hamiltonian systems. More precisely, consider a Euclidean space of dimension at least three, equipped with a commutative and associative product structure that satisfies certain compatibility conditions. We prove that such a product structure encapsulates precisely the conditions of a so-called abundant structure. Such a structure provides the data needed to construct a family of second-order (maximally) superintegrable Hamiltonian systems of second order. We prove that all abundant superintegrable Hamiltonian systems on Euclidean space of dimension at least three arise in this way. As an example, we present the Smorodinski-Winternitz I Hamiltonian system.

Abstract:This manuscript develops a geometric approach to ordinary cohomology of smooth manifolds, constructing a cochain complex model based on co-oriented smooth maps from manifolds with corners. Special attention is given to the pull-back product of such smooth maps, which provides our geometric cochains with a partially defined product structure inducing the cup product in cohomology. A parallel treatment of homology is also given allowing for a geometric unification of the contravariant and covariant theories.

Abstract:Let $t$ be a positive integer. Following work of D. M. Davis, we study the topology of complex-projective product spaces, i.e. quotients of cartesian products of odd dimensional spheres by the diagonal $S^1$-action, and of the $t$-torsion lens product spaces, i.e. the corresponding quotients when the action is restricted to the $t^{\mathrm{th}}$ roots of unity. For a commutative complex-oriented cohomology theory $h^*$, we determine the $h^*$-cohomology ring of these spaces (in terms of the $t$-series for $h^*$, in the case of $t$-torsion lens product spaces). When $h^*$ is singular cohomology with mod 2 coefficients, we also determine the action of the Steenrod algebra. We show that these spaces break apart after a suspension as a wedge of desuspensions of usual stunted complex projective ($t$-torsion lens) spaces. We estimate the category and topological complexity of complex-projective and lens product spaces, showing in particular that these invariants are usually much lower than predicted by the usual dimensional bounds. We extend Davis' analysis of manifold properties such as immersion dimension, (stable-)span, and (stable-)parallelizability of real projective product spaces to the complex-projective and lens product cases.

Let $M$ be the supertorus obtained by quotienting $\mathbb{C}^{1 \mid n}$ by the abelian group generated by the maps $S: (z,\theta_1, \dots, \theta_n) \mapsto (z + 1, \theta_1, \dots, \theta_n)$ and $T: (z, \theta_1, \dots, \theta_n) \mapsto (z + t, \theta_1 + \alpha_1, \dots, \theta_n + \alpha_n)$ where $t \in \mathbb{C}$ has positive imaginary part and $\alpha_1, \dots, \alpha_n$ are independent fermionic parameters. We compute the zeroth and first cohomology groups of the structure sheaf $\mathcal{O}$ of $M$ as doubly graded $\mathfrak{S}_n$-modules, exhibiting an instance of Serre duality between these groups. We use skein relations and noncrossing matchings to give a combinatorial presentation of $H^0(M,\mathcal{O})$ in terms of generators and relations.

Coarse cohomology of configuration space and coarse embedding

Abstract:We introduce a notion of equivariant coarse cohomology of the complement of a subspace in a metric space. We use this cohomology to define a notion of coarse cohomology of the configuration space of a metric space and develop tools to compute this cohomology under certain conditions. As an application of this theory, we show that certain classes in the coarse cohomology of configuration space obstruct coarse embedding between two metric spaces.

A careful definition of supersymmetric Euclidean field theories is given, refining Segal's axioms for conformal field theories. Abstract:We study relative differential and integral forms and their cohomology on families of supermanifolds and prove a relative version of Poincaré duality relating the cohomology of differential and integral forms in different geometric categories. In the smooth category, we complement Poincaré duality by proving the compactly supported Poincaré lemmas for both differential and integral forms, filling a gap in the literature. We then use our results to study supergravity. In particular, we describe supergravity in dimension three via higher Cartan structures, which can be regarded as certain classes of connections taking values in $L_\infty$-superalgebras. We then use relative Poincaré duality to state a general form of the action principle in a mathematically rigorous manner. This interpolates in a unified fashion between two equivalent formulations of supergravity, one based on the superspace approach and the other on the group manifold approach in the physics literature.

Abstract:We give a uniform vanishing criterion for products in bounded cohomology. This allows us to reprove and extend previous vanishing results for cup products and Massey triple products in the bounded cohomology of free groups and in the equivariant bounded cohomology of group actions on CAT(0) cube complexes.
