Abstract:Context. Using the Illustris-1 and IllustrisTNG-100 simulations, we investigate the properties of the Fundamental Plane (FP), which is the correlation between the effective radius R e , the effective surface intensity I e , and the central stellar velocity dispersion σ of galaxies, at different cosmic epochs. Aims. Our aim is to study the properties of galaxies in the FP and its projections across time, adopting samples covering different intervals of mass. We would like to demonstrate that the position of a galaxy in the FP space strongly depends on its degree of evolution, which might be represented by the β and $ L^\prime_0 $ parameters entering the L = $ L^\prime_0 $ ( t ) σ β ( t ) law. Methods. Starting from the comparison of the basic relations among the structural parameters of artificial and real galaxies at low redshift, we obtain the fit of the FP and its coefficients at different cosmic epochs for samples of different mass limits. Then, we analyze the dependence of the galaxy position in the FP space as a function of the β parameter and the star formation rate (SFR). Results. We find that: (1) the coefficients of the FP change with the mass range of the galaxy sample; (2) the low luminous and less massive galaxies do not share the same FP of the bright massive galaxies; (3) the scatter around the fitted FP is quite small at any epoch and increases when the mass interval increases; (4) the distribution of galaxies in the FP space strongly depends on the β values (i.e., on the degree of virialization and the star formation rate). Conclusions. The FP is a complex surface that is well approximated by a plane only when galaxies share similar masses and condition of virialization.

Abstract:ABSTRACT We investigate the Fundamental Plane (FP) evolution of early-type galaxies in the IllustrisTNG-100 simulation (TNG100) from redshift z = 0 to z = 2. We find that a tight plane relation already exists as early as z = 2. Its scatter stays as low as ∼0.08 dex across this redshift range. Both slope parameters b and c (where R ∝ σbIc with R, σ, and I being the typical size, velocity dispersion, and surface brightness) of the plane evolve mildly since z = 2, roughly consistent with observations. The FP residual $\rm Res$ ($\equiv \, a\, +\, b\log \sigma \, +\, c\log I\, -\, \log R$, where a is the zero-point of the FP) is found to strongly correlate with stellar age, indicating that stellar age can be used as a crucial fourth parameter of the FP. However, we find that 4c + b + 2 = δ, where δ ∼ 0.8 for FPs in TNG, rather than zero as is typically inferred from observations. This implies that a tight power-law relation between the dynamical mass-to-light ratio Mdyn/L and the dynamical mass Mdyn (where Mdyn ≡ 5σ2R/G, with G being the gravitational constant) is not present in the TNG100 simulation. Recovering such a relation requires proper mixing between dark matter and baryons, as well as star formation occurring with correct efficiencies at the right mass scales. This represents a powerful constraint on the numerical models, which has to be satisfied in future hydrodynamical simulations.

Abstract:This work is a continuation of the work of Kopylova and Kopylov published in 2016 on constructing the fundamental plane (FP) of groups and clusters of galaxies. In this article, the sample of galaxy systems has been increased from 94 to 172 objects. We have studied the relationships between the main characteristics of groups and clusters of galaxies using archival data from the SDSS, 2MASX, and NED catalogs. The measured parameters ( , and ) of galaxy clusters define the fundamental plane in the near-infrared region: . The shape of the FP of groups and clusters is consistent with the FP of early-type galaxies (SDSS, -filter), determined in the same way. Regression against in kpc gives the projection of the FP: , which can be used to determine the distances of galaxy systems. The scatter of the zero point is 0.07, which is equivalent to a 16 error in determining the distance to a group or cluster of galaxies. For the first time, we have determined the average relative FP distances and peculiar velocities of five large superclusters of galaxies. According to our estimates, the average peculiar velocity of these superclusters relative to the CMB is km s .

Abstract:This work is a continuation of the work of Kopylova and Kopylov (2016) to build a fundamental plane (FP) of groups and clusters of galaxies -- here a sample of galaxies systems is increased from 94 to 172 objects. We have studied the ratios between the basic characteristics of groups and clusters of galaxies according to the archival data of SDSS, 2MASX and NED catalogs. Measured parameters ($\log L_K$, $\log R_e$ and $\log \sigma$) of clusters of galaxies determine the fundamental plane in the near infrared region: $L_K \propto R_e^{0.77\pm0.09} \sigma^{1.44\pm0.12}$. The form of the FP of groups/clusters is consistent with the FP of the early -- types of galaxies (SDSS, $r$-band) determined in the same way. Direct regression relative to the padius $\log r_e$ in the kpc gives a projection of the FP -- $\log R_e=0.98(\pm0.06)\,\log \sigma-0.56(\pm0.04)<\log \langle I_e \rangle+3.57(\pm0.07)$, that can be used to determine the distances of the systems of galaxies. The root-mean-square deviation of the FP zero-point is 0.07 which is equal to the 16\% error in determining the distance of the group or cluster of galaxies. For the first time, we measured the peculiar velocities of the superclusters of galaxies. The mean peculiar velocity of the 5 superclusters of galaxies relative to the CMB is $+75\pm360$~km~s$^{-1}$.

Abstract:The fundamental plane of spiral galaxies was searched from observational data, which can be approximately represented in observational parameters by L proportional to V-2 R, where L, R, and V are the luminosity, the linear size of galactic disk, and the rotation velocity. This plane exists at all optical bands in our samples of more than 500 spiral galaxies in total. It is more fundamental than the relationship between any two of the parameters, and can reduce the residual of the Tully-Fisher L-V relations by about 50%. Noticed that the power index of V is doubled from that of R, which implies that the total mass and the mass distribution of galaxies plays an important role in forming the fundamental plane. Involving the third parameter of galactic size has a strong physical implication on galaxy formation and the dark-mass distribution.

Abstract:We analyse the Fundamental Plane (FP) relation of $39,993$ early-type galaxies (ETGs) in the optical (griz) and $5,080$ ETGs in the Near-Infrared (YJHK) wavebands, forming an optical$+$NIR sample of $4,589$ galaxies. We focus on the analysis of the FP as a function of the environment where galaxies reside. We characterise the environment using the largest group catalogue, based on 3D data, generated from SDSS at low redshift ($z < 0.1$). We find that the intercept $``c''$ of the FP decreases smoothly from high to low density regions, implying that galaxies at low density have on average lower mass-to-light ratios than their high-density counterparts. The $``c''$ also decreases as a function of the mean characteristic mass of the parent galaxy group. However, this trend is weak and completely accounted for by the variation of $``c''$ with local density. The variation of the FP offset is the same in all wavebands, implying that ETGs at low density have younger luminosity-weighted ages than cluster galaxies, consistent with the expectations of semi-analytical models of galaxy formation. We measure an age variation of $\sim 0.048$~dex ($\sim 11\%$) per decade of local galaxy density. This implies an age difference of about $32 \%$ ($\sim 3 \, Gyr$) between galaxies in the regions of highest density and the field. We find the metallicity decreasing, at $\sim 2$~$\sigma$, from low to high density. We also find $2.5 \, \sigma$ evidence that the variation in age per decade of local density augments, up to a factor of two, for galaxies residing in massive relative to poor groups. (abridged)

The hyperplane of early-type galaxies: using stellar population properties to increase the precision and accuracy of the fundamental plane as a distance indicator

Abstract:We use deep spectroscopy from the SAMI Galaxy Survey to explore the precision of the fundamental plane of early-type galaxies (FP) as a distance indicator for future single-fibre spectroscopy surveys. We study the optimal trade-off between sample size and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and investigate which additional observables can be used to construct hyperplanes with smaller intrinsic scatter than the FP. We add increasing levels of random noise (parametrised as effective exposure time) to the SAMI spectra to study the effect of increasing measurement uncertainties on the FP-and hyperplane-inferred distances. We find that, using direct-fit methods, the values of the FP and hyperplane best-fit coefficients depend on the spectral SNR, and reach asymptotic values for a mean SNR=40 Å$^{-1}$. As additional variables for the FP we consider three stellar-population observables: light-weighted age, stellar mass-to-light ratio and a novel combination of Lick indices (I$_{\rm age}$). For a SNR=45 Å$^{-1}$ (equivalent to 1-hour exposure on a 4-m telescope), all three hyperplanes outperform the FP as distance indicators. Being an empirical spectral index, I$_{\rm age}$ avoids the model-dependent uncertainties and bias underlying age and mass-to-light ratio measurements, yet yields a 10 per cent reduction of the median distance uncertainty compared to the FP. We also find that, as a by-product, the Iage hyperplane removes most of the reported environment bias of the FP. After accounting for the different signal-to-noise ratio, these conclusions also apply to a 50 times larger sample from SDSS-III. However, in this case, only age removes the environment bias.

Dependence of the Fundamental Plane of Early-type Galaxies on Age and Internal Structure

Abstract:We investigate the scatter in the fundamental plane (FP) of early-type galaxies (ETGs) and its dependence on age and internal structure of ETGs, using $16,283$ ETGs with $M_r\le-19.5$ and $0.025\le z<0.055$ in Sloan Digital Sky Survey data. We use the relation between the age of ETGs and photometric parameters such as color, absolute magnitude, and central velocity dispersion of ETGs and find that the scatter in the FP depends on age. The FP of old ETGs with age $\gtrsim9$ Gyrs has a smaller scatter of $\sim0.06$ dex ($\sim14\%$) while that of young ETGs with age $\lesssim6$ Gyrs has a larger scatter of $\sim0.075$ dex ($\sim17\%$). In the case of young ETGs, less compact ETGs have a smaller scatter in the FP ($\sim0.065$ dex; $\sim15\%$) than more compact ones ($\sim0.10$ dex; $\sim23\%$). On the other hand, the scatter in the FP of old ETGs does not depend on the compactness of galaxy structure. Thus, among the subpopulations of ETGs, compact young ETGs have the largest scatter in the FP. This large scatter in compact young ETGs is caused by ETGs that have low dynamical mass-to-light ratio ($M_\mathrm{dyn}/L$) and blue color in the central regions. By comparing with a simple model of the galaxy that has experienced a gas-rich major merger, we find that the scenario of recent gas-rich major merger can reasonably explain the properties of the compact young ETGs with excessive light for a given mass (low $M_\mathrm{dyn}/L$) and blue central color.

The parallelism between galaxy clusters and early-type galaxies: II. Clues on the origin of the scaling relations

Abstract:Context. This is the second work dedicated to the observed parallelism between galaxy clusters and early-type galaxies. The focus is on the distribution of these systems in the scaling relations (SRs) observed when effective radii, effective surface brightness, total luminosities and velocity dispersions are mutually correlated. Aims. Using the data of the Illustris simulation we try to speculate on the origin of the observed SRs. Methods. We compare the observational SRs extracted from the database of the WIde-field Nearby Galaxy-cluster Survey (WINGS) with the relevant parameters coming from the Illustris simulations. Then we use the simulated data at different redshift to infer the evolution of the SRs. Results. The comparison demonstrate that galaxy clusters (GCs) at z~0 follow the same log(L)-log(sigma) relation of early-type galaxies (ETGs) and that both in the log(Ie)-log(Re) and log(Re)-log(M*) planes the distribution of GCs is along the sequence defined by the brightest and massive early-type galaxies (BCGs). The Illustris simulation reproduces the tails of the massive galaxies visible both in the log(Ie)-log(Re) and log(Re)-log(M*) planes, but fail to give the correct estimate of the effective radii of the dwarf galaxies that appear too large and those of GCs that are too small. The evolution of the SRs up to z=4 permits to reveal the complex evolutionary paths of galaxies in the SRs and indicate that the line marking the Zone of Exclusion (ZoE), visible both in the log(Ie)-log(Re) and log(Re)-log(M*) planes, is the trend followed by virialized and passively evolving systems. Conclusions. We speculate that the observed SRs originate from the intersection of the virial theorem and a relation L=L_0 x sigma^beta where the luminosities depend on the star formation history.

On the fundamental line of galactic and extragalactic globular clusters

Abstract:Context. In a previous paper, we found that globular clusters in our Galaxy lie close to a line in the (log Re, SBe, log σ) parameter space, with a moderate degree of scatter and remarkable axi-symmetry. This implies that a purely photometric scaling law exists, that can be obtained by projecting this line onto the (log Re, SBe) plane. These photometric quantities are readily available for large samples of clusters, as opposed to stellar velocity dispersion data. Aims. We study a sample of 129 Galactic and extragalactic clusters on this photometric plane in the V-band. We search for a linear relation between SBe and log Re and study how the scatter around the best-fit relation is influenced by both age and dynamical environment. We interpret our results in terms of testing the evolutionary versus primordial origin of the fundamental line. Methods. We perform a detailed analysis of surface brightness profiles, which allows us to present a catalogue of structural properties without relying on a given dynamical model. Results. We find a linear relation between SBe and log Re, in the form SBe = (5.25 ± 0.44) log Re + (15.58 ± 0.28), where SBe is measured in mag/arcsec2 and Re in parsec. Both young and old clusters follow the scaling law, which has a scatter of approximately 1 mag in SBe. However, young clusters display more of a scatter and a clear trend in this with age, which old clusters do not. This trend becomes tighter if cluster age is measured in units of the cluster half-light relaxation time. Two-body relaxation therefore plays a major role, together with passive stellar population evolution, in shaping the relation between SBe, log Re, and cluster age. We argue that the log Re-SBe relation and hence the fundamental line scaling law does not have a primordial origin at cluster formation, but is rather the result of a combination of stellar evolution and collisional dynamical evolution.

Recovering the fundamental plane of galaxies by $f(R)$ gravity

Abstract:The fundamental plane (FP) of galaxies can be recovered in the framework of $f(R)$ gravity avoiding the issues related to dark matter to fit the observations. In particular, the power-law version $f(R)\propto R^n$, resulting from the existence of Noether symmetries for $f(R)$, is sufficient to implement the approach. In fact, relations between the FP parameters and the corrected Newtonian potential, coming from $R^n$, can be found and justified from a physical point of view. Specifically, we analyze the velocity distribution of elliptical galaxies and obtain that $r_c$, the scale-length depending on the gravitational system properties, is proportional to $r_e$, the galaxy effective radius. This fact points out that the gravitational corrections induced by $f(R)$ can lead photometry and dynamics of the system. Furthermore, the main byproduct of such an approach is that gravity could work in different ways depending on the scales of self-gravitating systems.

Abstract:Early-type galaxies provide unique tests for the predictions of the cold dark matter cosmology and the baryonic physics assumptions entering models for galaxy formation. In this work, we use the Illustris simulation to study correlations of three main properties of early-type galaxies, namely, the stellar orbital anisotropies, the central dark matter fractions and the central radial density slopes, as well as their redshift evolution since $z=1.0$. We find that lower-mass galaxies or galaxies at higher redshift tend to be bluer in rest-frame colour, have higher central gas fractions, and feature more tangentially anisotropic orbits and steeper central density slopes than their higher-mass or lower-redshift counterparts, respectively. The projected central dark matter fraction within the effective radius shows a very mild mass dependence but positively correlates with galaxy effective radii due to the aperture effect. The central density slopes obtained by combining strong lensing measurements with single aperture kinematics are found to differ from the true density slopes. We identify systematic biases in this measurement to be due to two common modelling assumptions, isotropic stellar orbital distributions and power-law density profiles. We also compare the properties of early-type galaxies in Illustris to those from existing galaxy and strong lensing surveys, we find in general broad agreement but also some tension, which poses a potential challenge to the stellar formation and feedback models adopted by the simulation.
Intrinsic correlations of galaxy sizes in a hydrodynamical cosmological simulation

Abstract:ABSTRACT Residuals between measured galactic radii and those predicted by the Fundamental Plane (FP) are possible tracers of weak lensing magnification. However, observations have shown these to be systematically correlated with the large-scale structure. We use the Horizon-AGN hydrodynamical cosmological simulation to analyse these intrinsic size correlations (ISCs) for both elliptical (early-type) and spiral (late-type) galaxies at $z$ = 0.06. We fit separate FPs to each sample, finding similarly distributed radius residuals, λ, in each case. We find persistent λλ correlations over three-dimensional separations $0.5\hbox{--}17\, h^{-1}\, {\rm {Mpc}}$ in the case of spiral galaxies, at >3σ significance. When relaxing a mass-selection, applied for better agreement with galaxy clustering constraints, the spiral λλ detection strengthens to 9σ; we detect a 5σ density-λ correlation; and we observe intrinsically-large spirals to cluster more strongly than small spirals over scales ${\lesssim}10\, h^{-1}\, {\rm {Mpc}}$ at >5σ significance. Conversely, and in agreement with the literature, we observe lower-mass, intrinsically-small ellipticals to cluster more strongly than their large counterparts over scales $0.5\hbox{--}17\, h^{-1}\, {\rm {Mpc}}$ at >5σ significance. We model λλ correlations using a phenomenological non-linear size model, and predict the level of contamination for cosmic convergence analyses. We find the systematic contribution to be of similar order to, or dominant over the cosmological signal. We make a mock measurement of an intrinsic, systematic contribution to the projected surface mass density Σ(r), and find statistically significant low-amplitude, positive (negative) contributions from lower-mass spirals (ellipticals), which may be of concern for large-scale (${\gtrsim}7\, h^{-1}$ Mpc) measurements.

Abstract:The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) Peculiar Velocity Survey aims to measure the peculiar velocities of early and late type galaxies within the DESI footprint using both the Fundamental Plane and Tully-Fisher relations. Direct measurements of peculiar velocities can significantly improve constraints on the growth rate of structure, reducing uncertainty by a factor of approximately 2.5 at redshift 0.1 compared to the DESI Bright Galaxy Survey's redshift space distortion measurements alone. We assess the quality of stellar velocity dispersion measurements from DESI spectroscopic data. These measurements, along with photometric data from the Legacy Survey, establish the Fundamental Plane relation and determine distances and peculiar velocities of early-type galaxies. During Survey Validation, we obtain spectra for 6698 unique early-type galaxies, up to a photometric redshift of 0.15. 64\% of observed galaxies (4267) have relative velocity dispersion errors below 10\%. This percentage increases to 75\% if we restrict our sample to galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts below 0.1. We use the measured central velocity dispersion, along with photometry from the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys, to fit the Fundamental Plane parameters using a 3D Gaussian maximum likelihood algorithm that accounts for measurement uncertainties and selection cuts. In addition, we conduct zero-point calibration using the absolute distance measurements to the Coma cluster, leading to a value of the Hubble constant, $H_0 = 76.05 \pm 0.35$(statistical) $\pm 0.49$(systematic FP) $\pm 4.86$(statistical due to calibration) $\mathrm{km \ s^{-1} Mpc^{-1}}$. This $H_0$ value is within $2\sigma$ of Planck Cosmic Microwave Background results and within $1\sigma$, of other low redshift distance indicator-based measurements.

Abstract:Recently Disney et al. (2008) found a striking correlation among the five basic parameters that govern the galactic dynamics: R50, R90, Lr, Md, and MHI . They suggested that this is in conflict with the LCDM model, which predicts the hierarchical formation of cosmic structures from bottom up. In light of the importance of the issue, we performed a similar analysis on global parameters of galaxies with a significantly larger database and two additional parameters, LJ and RJ, of the near-infrared J band. We used databases from the Arecibo Legacy Fast Arecibo L-band Feed Array Survey for the atomic gas properties, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey for the optical properties, and the Two Micron All Sky Survey for the near-infrared properties, of the galaxies. We conducted principal component analysis (PCA) to find relations among these observational variables and confirmed that the five parameters in the work of Disney et al. are indeed correlated. The first principal component dominates the correlations among the five parameters and can explain 86% of the variation in the data. When color (g - i) is included, the first component still dominates and the color forms a second principal component that is almost independent of other parameters. The overall trend in our near-infrared PCA is very similar, except that color (i - J) seems even more decoupled from all other parameters. The dominance of the first principal component suggests that the structure of galaxies is governed by a single physical parameter. This confirms the observational results in Disney et al. However, based on the importance of the baryon physics in galaxy formation, we are not convinced that the hierarchical structure formation scenario and the notion of cold dark matter are necessarily flawed.

Abstract:Empirical correlations connecting starlight to galaxy dynamics (e.g., the fundamental plane (FP) of elliptical/quiescent galaxies and the Tully--Fisher relation of spiral/star-forming galaxies) provide cosmology-independent distance estimation and are central to local Universe cosmology. In this work, we introduce the mass hyperplane (MH), which is the stellar-to-dynamical mass relation $(M_\star/M_\mathrm{dyn})$ recast as a linear distance indicator. Building on recent FP studies, we show that both star-forming and quiescent galaxies follow the same empirical MH, then use this to measure the peculiar velocities (PVs) for a sample of 2496 galaxies at $z<0.12$ from GAMA. The limiting precision of MH-derived distance/PV estimates is set by the intrinsic scatter in size, which we find to be $\approx$0.1~dex for both quiescent and star-forming galaxies (when modeled independently) and $\approx$0.11~dex when all galaxies are modeled together; showing that the MH is as good as the FP. To empirically validate our framework and distance/PV estimates, we compare the inferred distances to groups as derived using either quiescent or star-forming galaxies. A good agreement is obtained with no discernible bias or offset, having a scatter of $\approx$0.05~dex $\approx$12\% in distance. Further, we compare our PV measurements for the quiescent galaxies to the previous PV measurements of the galaxies in common between GAMA and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), which shows similarly good agreement. Finally, we provide comparisons of PV measurements made with the FP and the MH, then discuss possible improvements in the context of upcoming surveys such as the 4MOST Hemisphere Survey (4HS).

Abstract:The interstellar medium has a highly filamentary and hierarchical structure that may play a significant role in star formation. A systematical study of the large-scale filaments toward their physical parameters, distribution, structures, and kinematics will inform us about which types of filaments have the potential to form stars, how the material feeds protostars through filaments, and the connection between star formation and Galactic spiral arms. Unlike the traditional by-eye searches, we use a customized minimum spanning tree algorithm to identify filaments by linking Galactic clumps from the APEX Telescope Large Area Survey of the Galaxy catalog. In the inner Galactic plane (∣l∣ < 60°), we identify 163 large-scale filaments with physical properties derived, including the dense-gas mass fraction, and we compare them with an updated spiral arm model in position–position–velocity space. The dense-gas mass fraction is found not to differ significantly in various Galactic positions or in different spiral arms. We also find that most filaments are interarm filaments after adding a distance constraint, and filaments in arms differ a little with those not in arms. One surprising result is that clumps on and off filaments have no significant distinction in their mass at the same size.

Abstract:The redshift-space correlation function $\xi_s$ for projected galaxy separations $\simless 1h^{-1}$ Mpc can be expressed as the convolution of the real-space correlation function with the galaxy pairwise velocity distribution function (PVDF). An exponential PVDF yields the best fit to the $\xi_s$ measured from galaxy samples of different redshift surveys. We show that this exponential PVDF is not merely a fitting function but arises from well defined gravitational processes. Two ingredients conspire to yield a PVDF with a nearly exponential shape: (i) the number density $n(\sigma)$ of systems with velocity dispersion $\sigma$; (ii) the unrelaxed dynamical state of most galaxy systems. The former ingredient determines the exponential tail and the latter the central peak of the PVDF. We compare the $\xi_s$ measured on non-linear scales from galaxy samples of the CfA redshift surveys with different models of the PVDF convolved with the measured real-space correlation function. This preliminary comparison indicates that the agreement between model and observations depends strongly on both the underlying cosmological model and the internal dynamics of galaxy systems. Neither parameter dominates. Moreover, the agreement depends sensitively on the accuracy of the galaxy position and velocity measurements.
Probing the major driver of stellar population properties over sub-galaxy scales with SDSS MaNGA IFU spectroscopy

Abstract:Thanks to Integral Field Unit survey data it is possible to explore in detail the link between the formation of the stellar content in galaxies and the drivers of evolution. Traditionally, scaling relations have connected galaxy-wide parameters such as stellar mass (M$_s$), morphology or average velocity dispersion ($\sigma$) to the star formation histories (SFHs). We study a high quality sample of SDSS-MaNGA spectra to test the possibility that sub-galaxy ($\sim$2\,kpc) scales are dominant, instead of galaxy-wide parameters. We find a strong correlation between local velocity dispersion and key line strengths that depend on the SFHs, allowing us to make the ansatz that this indicator - that maps the local gravitational potential - is the major driver of star formation in galaxies, whereas larger scales play a role of a secondary nature. Galactocentric distance has a weaker correlation, suggesting that the observed radial gradients effectively reflect local variations of velocity dispersion. In our quest for a cause, instead of a correlation, we contrast $\sigma$ with local stellar mass, that appears less correlated with population properties. We conclude that the inherently higher uncertainty in M$_s$ may explain its lower correlation with respect to $\sigma$, but the extra uncertainty needed for $\sigma$ to have similar correlations as M$_s$ is rather high. Therefore we posit local velocity dispersion as the major driver of evolution, a result that should be reproduced by hydrodynamical models at the proper resolution.
