Abstract:In this paper, we study the existence of solutions to the centroaffine Minkowski problem, namely the existence of closed convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space R n + 1 \mathbb {R}^{n+1} with prescribed centroaffine curvature. This problem can be described as a variational problem with a functional resembling Kantorovich’s dual functional in optimal transportation. By using the Gauss curvature flow, we obtain new conditions for the existence of solutions to the problem.

Abstract:In this paper we study the existence of closed convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space Rn+1 such that a Weingarten curvature, regarded as a function of their unit normal, is equal to a given positive function on the unit sphere Sn. Two classical problems of this type, namely the Christoffel problem [6] and the Minkowski problem [16], which address respectively the cases of harmonic and Gauss curvature, were completely solved in the 1970’s [7,9,17]. Besides the harmonic and Gauss curvatures, the most interesting Weingarten curvatures are probably the mean curvature, or more generally the k-curvatures (1 ≤ k ≤ n)

Abstract:We define discrete constant mean curvature (cmc) surfaces in the three-dimensional Euclidean and Lorentz spaces in terms of sphere packings with orthogonally intersecting circles. These discrete cmc surfaces can be constructed from orthogonal ring patterns in the two-sphere and the hyperbolic plane. We present a variational principle that allows us to solve boundary value problems and to construct discrete analogues of some classical cmc surfaces. The data used for the construction is purely combinatorial - the combinatorics of the curvature line pattern. In the limit of orthogonal circle patterns we recover the theory of discrete minimal surfaces associated to Koebe polyhedra all edges of which touch a sphere. These are generalized to two-sphere Koebe nets, i.e., nets with planar quadrilateral faces and edges that alternately touch two concentric spheres.

Abstract:This is a case study of the algebraic boundary of convex hulls of varieties. We focus on surfaces in fourspace to showcase new geometric phenomena that neither curves nor hypersurfaces exhibit. Our method is a detailed analysis of a general purpose formula by Ranestad and Sturmfels in the case of smooth real algebraic surfaces of low degree (that are rational over the complex numbers). We study both the complex and the real features of the algebraic boundary of Veronese and Del Pezzo surfaces. The main difficulties and the possible approaches to the case of general surfaces are discussed for and complemented by the example of Bordiga surfaces.

Abstract:Weakly complete constant Gaussian curvature $-1<K<0$ surfaces will be classified in terms of holomorphic quadratic differentials. For this purpose, we will first establish a loop group method for constant Gaussian curvature surfaces in $\mathbb H^3$ with $K>-1$ but $K \neq 0$ by using harmonicities of Lagrangian and Legendrian Gauss maps. Then we will show that a spectral parameter deformation of the Lagrangian harmonic Gauss map gives a harmonic map into $\mathbb H^2$ for $-1< K<0$ or $\mathbb S^2$ for $K>0$, respectively.

Smooth k-double covers of the plane of geometric genus 3

Abstract:In this work we classify all smooth surfaces with geometric genus equal to three and an action of a group G isomorphic to (Z/2)^k such that the quotient is a plane. We find 11 families. We compute the canonical map of all of them, finding in particular a family of surfaces with canonical map of degree 16 that we could not find in the literature. We discuss the quotients by all subgroups of G finding several K3 surfaces with symplectic involutions. In particular we show that six families are families of triple K3 burgers in the sense of Laterveer.

Abstract:Abstract We discuss a notion of discrete conformal equivalence for decorated piecewise Euclidean surfaces (PE-surface), that is, PE-surfaces with a choice of circle about each vertex. It is closely related to inversive distance and hyperideal circle patterns. Under the assumption that the circles are non-intersecting, we prove the corresponding discrete uniformization theorem. The uniformization theorem for discrete conformal maps corresponds to the special case that all circles degenerate to points. Our proof relies on an intimate relationship between decorated PE-surfaces, canonical tessellations of hyperbolic surfaces and convex hyperbolic polyhedra. It is based on a concave variational principle, which also provides a method for the computation of decorated discrete conformal maps.

Abstract:In the study of immersed surfaces of constant positive extrinsic curvature in space‐forms, it is natural to substitute completeness for a weaker property, which we here call quasicompleteness. We determine the global geometry of such surfaces under the hypotheses of quasicompleteness. In particular, we show that, for k>Max(0,−c) , the only quasicomplete immersed surfaces of constant extrinsic curvature equal to k in the 3‐dimensional space‐form of constant sectional curvature equal to c are the geodesic spheres. Together with earlier work of the author, this completes the classification of quasicomplete immersed surfaces of constant positive extrinsic curvature in 3‐dimensional space‐forms.

Abstract:We prove that the Koebe circle domain conjecture is equivalent to the Weyl type problem that every complete hyperbolic surface of genus zero is isometric to the boundary of the hyperbolic convex hull of the complement of a circle domain. It provides a new way to approach the Koebe's conjecture using convex geometry. Combining our result with the work of He-Schramm on the Koebe conjecture, one establishes that every simply connected non-compact polyhedral surface is discrete conformal to the complex plane or the open unit disk. The main tool we use is Schramm's transboundary extremal lengths.
On the structure of complete kählerian manifolds furnished with closed conformal vector fields

Abstract:We show that if a connected compact kählerian surface $M$ with nonpositive gaussian curvature is furnished with a closed conformal vector field $\xi$ whose singular points are isolated, then $M$ is isometric to a flat torus and $\xi$ is parallel. We also consider the case of a connected complete kählerian manifod $M$ of complex dimension $n>1$ and furnished with a nontrivial closed conformal vector field $\xi$. In this case, it is well known that the singularities of $\xi$ are automatically isolated and the nontrivial leaves of the distribution generated by $\xi$ and $J\xi$ are totally geodesic in $M$. Assuming that one such leaf is compact, has torsion normal holonomy group and that the holomorphic sectional curvature of $M$ along it is nonpositive, we show that $\xi$ is parallel and $M$ is foliated by a family of totally geodesic isometric tori and also by a family of totally geodesic isometric complete kählerian manifolds of complex dimension $n-1$. In particular, the the universal covering of $M$ is isometric to a riemannian product having $\mathbb R^2$ as a factor. We also present a generic example showing that one cannot get rid of the hypothesis on the nonpositivity of the holomorphic sectional curvature along at least one such leaf.

Abstract:We lay the foundations of convex hypersurface theory (CHT) in contact topology, extending the work of Giroux in dimension three. Specifically, we prove that any closed hypersurface in a contact manifold can be $C^0$-approximated by a convex one. We also prove that a $C^0$-generic family of mutually disjoint closed hypersurfaces parametrized by $t \in [0,1]$ is convex except at finitely many times $t_1, \dots, t_N$, and that crossing each $t_i$ corresponds to a bypass attachment. As applications of CHT, we prove the existence of compatible (relative) open book decompositions for contact manifolds and an existence h-principle for codimension 2 contact submanifolds.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to verify that the study of generic conformally flat hypersurfaces in 4-dimensional space forms is reduced to a surface theory in the standard 3-sphere. The conformal structure of generic conformally flat (local-)hypersurfaces is characterized as conformally flat (local-)3-metrics with the Guichard condition. Then, there is a certain class of orthogonal analytic (local-)Riemannian 2-metrics with constant Gauss curvature -1 such that any 2-metric of the class gives rise to a one-parameter family of conformally flat 3-metrics with the Guichard condition. In this paper, we firstly relate 2-metrics of the class to surfaces in the 3-sphere: for a 2-metric of the class, a 5-dimensional set of (non-isometric) analytic surfaces in the 3-sphere is determined such that any surface of the set gives rise to an evolution of surfaces in the 3-sphere issuing from the surface and the evolution is the Gauss map of a generic conformally flat hypersurface in the Euclidean 4-space. Secondly, we characterize analytic surfaces in the 3-sphere which give rise to generic conformally flat hypersurfaces.

Abstract:We study Fano fourfolds of K3 type with a conic bundle structure. We construct direct geometrical links between these fourfolds and hyperKähler varieties. As a result we describe families of nodal surfaces that can be seen as generalisations of Kummer quartic surfaces. Each of these families actually arises through two families of Fano fourfolds, whose conic bundle structures are related by hyperbolic reduction.

Abstract:We study hyperbolic polyhedral surfaces with faces isometric to regular hyperbolic polygons satisfying that the total angles at vertices are at least 2 pi. The combinatorial information of these surfaces is shown to be identified with that of Euclidean polyhedral surfaces with negative combinatorial curvature everywhere. We prove that there is a gap between areas of non-smooth hyperbolic polyhedral surfaces and the area of smooth hyperbolic surfaces. The numerical result for the gap is obtained for hyperbolic polyhedral surfaces, homeomorphic to the double torus, whose 1-skeletons are cubic graphs.(c) 2022 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Suppose that the surfaces K0 and Kr are the boundaries of two convex, complete, connected C^2 bodies in R^3. Assume further that the (Euclidean) distance between any point x in Kr and K0 is always r (r > 0). For x in Kr, let {\Pi}(x) denote the nearest point to x in K0. We show that the projection {\Pi} preserves geodesics in these surfaces if and only if both surfaces are concentric spheres or co-axial round cylinders. This is optimal in the sense that the main step to establish this result is false for C^{1,1} surfaces. Finally, we give a non-trivial example of a geodesic preserving projection of two C^2 non-constant distance surfaces. The question whether for any C^2 convex surface S0, there is a surface S whose projection to S0 preserves geodesics is open.

Abstract:In this article, we construct complete embedded constant mean curvature surfaces in $\mb{R}^3$ with freely prescribed genus and any number of ends greater than or equal to four. Heuristically, the surfaces are obtained by resolving finitely many points of tangency between collections of spheres. The construction relies a family of constant mean curvature surfaces constructed in \cite{Kleene}, constructed as graphs over catenoidal necks of small scale.
