Abstract:Given graphs $H$ and $F$, the generalized Turán number $\mathrm{ex}(n,H,F)$ is the largest number of copies of $H$ in $n$-vertex $F$-free graphs. We study the case when either $H$ or $F$ is a matching. We obtain several asymptotic and exact results.

Recently there has been interest in studying the case $\mathcal{F}=\{F,M_{s+1}\}$ for arbitrary $F$ and $H=K_r$. We extend these investigations to the case $H$ is arbitrary as well.

Abstract:The generalized Turán number ex(n,H,F) is the largest number of copies of H in n -vertex F -free graphs. We denote by tF the vertex-disjoint union of t copies of F . Gerbner, Methuku and Vizer in 2019 determined the order of magnitude of ex(n,Ks,tKr) . We extend this result in three directions. First, we determine ex(n,Ks,tKr) exactly for sufficiently large n . Second, we determine the asymptotics of the analogous number for p -uniform hypergraphs. Third, we determine the order of magnitude of ex(n,H,tKr) for every graph H , and also of the analogous number for p -uniform hypergraphs.

Abstract: For a graph $T$ and a set of graphs $\mathcal{H}$, let $\ex(n,T,\mathcal{H})$ denote the maximum number of copies of $T$ in an $n$-vertex $\mathcal{H}$-free graph. Recently, Alon and Frankl~(arXiv2210.15076) determined the exact value of $\ex(n,K_2,\{K_{k+1},M_{s+1}\})$, where $K_{k+1}$ and $M_{s+1}$ are complete graph on $k+1$ vertices and matching of size $s+1$, respectively. Soon after, Gerbner~(arXiv2211.03272) continued the study by extending $K_{k+1}$ to general fixed graph $H$. In this paper, we continue the study of the function $\ex(n, T,\{H,M_{s+1}\})$ when $T=K_r$ for $r\ge 3$. We determine the exact value of $\ex(n,K_r,\{K_{k+1},M_{s+1}\})$ and give the value of $\ex(n,K_r,\{H,M_{s+1}\})$ for general $H$ with an error term $O(1)$.
Turán number of complete bipartite graphs with bounded matching number

Abstract:Let $\mathscr{F}$ be a family of graphs. A graph $G$ is $\mathscr{F}$-free if $G$ does not contain any $F\in \mathcal{F}$ as a subgraph. The Turán number $ex(n, \mathscr{F})$ is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $\mathscr{F}$-free graph. Let $M_{s}$ be the matching consisting of $ s $ independent edges. Recently, Alon and Frank determined the exact value of $ex(n,\{K_{m},M_{s+1}\})$. Gerbner obtained several results about $ex(n,\{F,M_{s+1}\})$ when $F$ satisfies certain proportions. In this paper, we determine the exact value of $ex(n,\{K_{l,t},M_{s+1}\})$ when $s, n$ are large enough for every $3\leq l\leq t$. When $n$ is large enough, we also show that $ex(n,\{K_{2,2}, M_{s+1}\})=n+{s\choose 2}-\left\lceil\frac{s}{2}\right\rceil$ for $s\ge 12$ and $ex(n,\{K_{2,t},M_{s+1}\})=n+(t-1){s\choose 2}-\left\lceil\frac{s}{2}\right\rceil$ when $t\ge 3$ and $s$ is large enough.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a family of $r$-graphs. The Turán number $ex_r(n;\mathcal{F})$ is defined to be the maximum number of edges in an $r$-graph of order $n$ that is $\mathcal{F}$-free. The famous Erdős Matching Conjecture shows that \[ ex_r(n,M_{k+1}^{(r)})= \max\left\{\binom{rk+r-1}{r},\binom{n}{r}-\binom{n-k}{r}\right\}, \] where $M_{k+1}^{(r)}$ represents the $r$-graph consisting of $k+1$ disjoint edges. Motivated by this conjecture, we consider the Turán problem for tight linear forests. A tight linear forest is an $r$-graph whose connected components are all tight paths or isolated vertices. Let $\mathcal{L}_{n,k}^{(r)}$ be the family of all tight linear forests of order $n$ with $k$ edges in $r$-graphs. In this paper, we prove that for sufficiently large $n$, \[ ex_r(n;\mathcal{L}_{n,k}^{(r)})=\max\left\{\binom{k}{r}, \binom{n}{r}-\binom{n-\left\lfloor (k-1)/r\right \rfloor}{r}\right\}+d, \] where $d=o(n^r)$ and if $r=3$ and $k=cn$ with $0<c<1$, if $r\geq 4$ and $k=cn$ with $0<c<1/2$. The proof is based on the weak regularity lemma for hypergraphs. We also conjecture that for arbitrary $k$ satisfying $k \equiv 1\ (mod\ r)$, the error term $d$ in the above result equals 0. We prove that the proposed conjecture implies the Erdős Matching Conjecture directly.

Abstract:For a family of graphs , a graph is called -free if it does not contain any member of as a subgraph. The generalized Turán number (n,K_r,) is the maximum number of K_r in an n-vertex -free graph and (n,K_2,)=(n,), i.e., the classical Turán number. Let M_s+1 be a matching on s+1 edges and F be any graph. In this paper, we determine (n,K_r, {M_s+1,F}) apart from a constant additive term and also give a condition when the error constant term can be determined. In particular, we give the exact value of (n,{M_s+1,F}) for F being any non-bipartite graph or some bipartite graphs. Furthermore, we determine (n,K_r,{M_s+1,F}) when F is color critical with χ(F)≥max{r+1,4}. These extend the results in [2,11,18].
Generalized planar Turán numbers related to short cycles

Abstract:Given two graphs $H$ and $F$, the generalized planar Turán number $\mathrm{ex}_\mathcal{P}(n,H,F)$ is the maximum number of copies of $H$ that an $n$-vertex $F$-free planar graph can have. We investigate this function when $H$ and $F$ are short cycles. Namely, for large $n$, we find the exact value of $\mathrm{ex}_\mathcal{P}(n, C_l,C_3)$, where $C_l$ is a cycle of length $l$, for $4\leq l\leq 6$, and determine the extremal graphs in each case. Also, considering the converse of these problems, we determine sharp upper bounds for $\mathrm{ex}_\mathcal{P}(n,C_3,C_l)$, for $4\leq l\leq 6$.

Abstract:For a family of graphs $\cal F$, a graph $G$ is $\cal F$-free if it does not contain a member of $\cal F$ as a subgraph. The Turán number $\textrm{ex}(n,{\cal F})$ is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph which is $\cal F$-free. Let ${\cal C}_{\geq k}$ be the set of cycles with length at least $k$. In this paper, we investigate the Turán number of $\{{\cal C}_{\geq k}, F\}$ for a general graph $F$. To be precise, we determine $\textrm{ex}(n, \{{\cal C}_{\geq k}, F\})$ apart from a constant additive term, where $F$ either is a 2-connected nonbipartite graph or is a 2-connected bipartite graph under some conditions. This is an extension of a previous result on the Turán number of $\{{\cal C}_{\geq k}, K_r\}$ by the first author, Ning, and the third author.

Abstract:In this paper, we address problems related to parameters concerning edge mappings of graphs. The quantity $h(n,G)$ is defined to be the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph $H$ such that there exists a mapping $f: E(H)\rightarrow E(H)$ with $f(e)\neq e$ for all $e\in E$ and further in all copies $G'$ of $G$ in $H$ there exists $e\in E(G')$ with $f(e)\in E(G')$. Among other results, we determine $h(n, G)$ when $G$ is a matching and $n$ is large enough.

Generalized Turán problem for a path and a clique

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a family of graphs. The generalized Turán number $ex(n, K_r, \mathcal{H})$ is the maximum number of copies of the clique $K_r$ in any $n$-vertex $\mathcal{H}$-free graph. In this paper, we determine the value of $ex(n, K_r, \{P_k, K_m \} )$ for sufficiently large $n$ with an exceptional case, and characterize all corresponding extremal graphs, which generalizes and strengthens the results of Katona and Xiao [EJC, 2024] on $ex(n, K_2, \{P_k, K_m \} )$. For the exceptional case, we obtain a tight upper bound for $ex(n, K_r, \{P_k, K_m \} )$ that confirms a conjecture on $ex(n, K_2, \{P_k, K_m \} )$ posed by Katona and Xiao.

Abstract:For graphs H and F with chromatic number χ ( F ) = k, we call H strictly F-Turán-good (or ( H , F ) strictly Turán-good) if the Turán graph T k − 1 ( n ) is the unique F-free graph on n vertices containing the largest number of copies of H when n is large enough. Let F be a graph with chromatic number χ ( F ) ≥ 3 and a color-critical edge and let P ℓ be a path with ℓ vertices. Gerbner and Palmer (2020) showed that ( P 3 , F ) is strictly Turán good if χ ( F ) ≥ 4 and they conjectured that (a) this result is true when χ ( F ) = 3, and, moreover, (b) ( P ℓ , K k ) is Turán-good for every pair of integers ℓ and k. In the present paper, we show that ( H , F ) is strictly Turán-good when H is a bipartite graph with matching number ν ( H ) = ⌊ | V ( H ) | 2 ⌋ and χ ( F ) = 3, as a corollary, this result confirms the conjecture (a); we also prove that ( P ℓ , F ) is strictly Turán-good for 2 ≤ ℓ ≤ 6 and χ ( F ) ≥ 4, this also confirms the conjecture (b) for 2 ≤ ℓ ≤ 6 and k ≥ 4.

Abstract:Write $K^{(k)}_{n}$ for the complete $k$-graph on $n$ vertices. For $2 \leq k \leq g < r$ integers, let $\pi\left(n, K^{(k)}_{g}, K^{(k)}_r\right)$ be the maximum density of $K^{(k)}_{g}$ in $n$ vertex $K^{(k)}_{r}$-free $k$-graphs. The main contribution of this paper is the upper bound: $\pi\left(n, K^{(k)}_{g}, K^{(k)}_r\right) \leq \left(1 + O\left(n^{-1}\right) \right)\prod_{m=k}^{g} \left(1 - \frac{\binom{m-1}{k-1}}{\binom{r-1}{k-1}} \right).$ The graph case ($k=2$) is the first known generalized Tur\'an question, investigated by Erd\H{o}s. The $k=g$ case is the hypergraph Tur\'an problem where the best known general upper bound is by de Caen. The result proved here matches both bounds asymptotically, while any triple $k, g, r$ with $2 < k < g < r$ provides a new upper bound. The proof uses techniques from the theory of flag algebras to derive linear relations between different densities. These relations can be combined with linear algebraic methods. Additionally a simple flag algebraic certificate will be given for $\lim_{n \rightarrow \infty} \pi \left(n, K^{(3)}_4, K^{(3)}_5 \right) = 3/8$.

Abstract:Given a graph T and a family of graphs , the generalized Turán number of is the maximum number of copies of T in an -free graph on n vertices, denoted by . A linear forest is a forest whose connected components are all paths and isolated vertices. Let be the family of all linear forests of size k without isolated vertices. In this paper, we obtained the maximum possible number of r -cliques in G , where G is -free with minimum degree at least d . Furthermore, we give a stability version of the result. As an application of the stability version of the result, we obtain a clique version of the stability of the Erdős–Gallai Theorem on matchings.

Random Turán Problems for Hypergraph Expansions

Abstract:The random Turán number $\mathrm{ex}(G_{n,p}^r,F)$ is the maximum number of edges in an $F$-free subgraph of the random $r$-uniform hypergraph $G_{n,p}^r$. We prove general results which (informally) shows that if $F$ is an $r_0$-graph, then upper bounds for $\mathrm{ex}(G_{n,p}^{r_0},F)$ can be lifted into upper bounds for $\mathrm{ex}(G_{n,p}^{r},F^{(r)})$ where $F^{(r)}$ is the $r$-uniform expansion of $F$, i.e.\ the hypergraph obtained from $F$ by inserting $r-r_0$ distinct vertices into each edge of $F$. These results unify and generalize most known upper bounds for random Turán numbers of degenerate hypergraphs of uniformity at least 3, and also provide new tight bounds for the random Turán numbers of expansions of theta graphs and complete bipartite graphs.

The number of edges in graphs with bounded clique number and circumference

Abstract:Let $\cal H$ be a family of graphs. The Turán number ${\rm ex}(n,{\cal H})$ is the maximum possible number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph which does not contain any member of $\cal H$ as a subgraph. As a common generalization of Turán's theorem and Erdős-Gallai theorem on the Turán number of matchings, Alon and Frankl determined ${\rm ex}(n,{\cal H})$ for ${\cal H}=\{K_r,M_k\}$, where $M_k$ is a matching of size $k$. Replacing $M_k$ by $P_k$, Katona and Xiao obtained the Turán number of ${\cal H}=\{K_r,P_k\}$ for $r \leq \lfloor k/2 \rfloor$ and sufficiently large $n$. In addition, they proposed a conjecture for the case of $r \geq \lfloor k/2 \rfloor+1$ and sufficiently large $n$. Motivated by the fact that the result for ${\rm ex}(n,P_k)$ can be deduced from the one for ${\rm ex}(n,{\cal C}_{\geq k})$, we investigate the Turán number of ${\cal H}=\{K_r, {\cal C}_{\geq k}\}$ in this paper. Namely, for such $\cal H$, we are able to show the value of ${\rm ex}(n,{\cal H})$ for $r \geq \lfloor (k-1)/2\rfloor+2$ and all $n$. As an application of this result, we confirm Katona and Xiao's conjecture in a stronger form. For $r \leq \lfloor (k-1)/2\rfloor+1$, we manage to show the value of ${\rm ex}(n,{\cal H})$ for sufficiently large $n$.

Multicolor Turán numbers II -- a generalization of the Ruzsa-Szemerédi theorem and new results on cliques and odd cycles

Abstract:In this paper we continue the study of a natural generalization of Turán's forbidden subgraph problem and the Ruzsa-Szemerédi problem. Let $ex_F(n,G)$ denote the maximum number of edge-disjoint copies of a fixed simple graph $F$ that can be placed on an $n$-vertex ground set without forming a subgraph $G$ whose edges are from different $F$-copies. The case when both $F$ and $G$ are triangles essentially gives back the theorem of Ruzsa and Szemerédi. We extend their results to the case when $F$ and $G$ are arbitrary cliques by applying a number theoretic result due to Erdős, Frankl and Rödl. This extension in turn decides the order of magnitude for a large family of graph pairs, which will be subquadratic, but almost quadratic. Since the linear $r$-uniform hypergraph Turán problems to determine $ex_r^{lin}(n,G)$ form a class of the multicolor Turán problem, following the identity $ex_r^{lin}(n,G)=ex_{K_r}(n,G)$, our results determine the linear hypergraph Turán numbers of every graph of girth $3$ and for every $r$ up to a subpolynomial factor. Furthermore, when $G$ is a triangle, we settle the case $F=C_5$ and give bounds for the cases $F=C_{2k+1}$, $k\ge 3$ as well.

Abstract:More than forty years ago, Erdős conjectured that for any T <= N/K, every K-uniform hypergraph on N vertices without T disjoint edges has at most max{\binom{KT-1}{K}, \binom{N}{K} - \binom{N-T+1}{K}} edges. Although this appears to be a basic instance of the hypergraph Turán problem (with a T-edge matching as the excluded hypergraph), progress on this question has remained elusive. In this paper, we verify this conjecture for all T < N/(3K^2). This improves upon the best previously known range T = O(N/K^3), which dates back to the 1970's.

Abstract:For an integer $r \ge 3$ and a subset $L \subset [0,r-1]$, a graph $G$ is $(K_{r}, L)$-intersecting if the number of vertices in the intersection of every pair of $K_r$ in $G$ belongs to $L$. We study the maximum number of $K_r$ in an $n$-vertex $(K_{r}, L)$-intersecting graphs. The celebrated Ruzsa--Szemerédi Theorem corresponds to the case $r=3$ and $L = \{0,1\}$.
