Abstract:We report a molecular dynamics study of liquid cesium at ambient pressure intended to check the possibility of liquid-liquid phase transformation at $T=590$ K. We find the presence of small kinks on thermodynamic characteristics of the system, but no phase transition.

Abstract:The dynamic properties of liquid phase-change materials (PCMs), such as viscosity $\eta$ and atomic self-diffusion coefficients D, play an essential role in ultrafast phase switching behavior of novel non-volatile phase-change memory applications, as they are intimately related to crystallization kinetics and phase stabilities. To connect $\eta$ to D, the Stokes-Einstein relation (SER) is commonly assumed to be valid at high temperatures near or above the melting temperature $T_{m}$ and is frequently employed for assessing liquid fragility (or crystal growth velocity) of technologically important PCM compositions. However, using quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS), we give here experimental evidence for a breakdown of the SER even at temperatures above $T_{m}$ in the high-atomic-mobility state of a typical PCM, Ge$_{1}$Sb$_{2}$Te$_{4}$, where the decay of density correlation functions still remains exponential. The origin of the breakdown is thus unlikely the result of dynamical heterogeneities, as is usually postulated for viscous liquids. Rather, we discuss its possible connections to a metal-semiconductor and fragile-strong transition hidden below $T_{m}$.

Abstract:The striking anomalies in physical properties of supercooled water that were discovered in the 1960-70s, remain incompletely understood and so provide both a source of controversy amongst theoreticians, and a stimulus to experimentalists and simulators to find new ways of penetrating the "crystallization curtain" that effectively shields the problem from solution. Recently a new door on the problem was opened by showing that, in ideal solutions, made using ionic liquid solutes, water anomalies are not destroyed as earlier found for common salt and most molecular solutes, but instead are enhanced to the point of precipitating an apparently first order liquid-liquid transition. The evidence was a spike in apparent heat capacity during cooling that could be fully reversed during reheating before any sign of ice crystallization appeared. Here, we use decoupled-oscillator infrared spectroscopy to define the structural character of this phenomenon using similar down and upscan rates as in the calorimetric study. Thin-film samples also permit slow scans (1 K/min) in which the transition has a width of less than 1 K, and is fully reversible. The OH spectrum changes discontinuously at the phase-transition temperature, indicating a discrete change in hydrogen-bond structure. The spectral changes show that the low-temperature liquid is more strongly hydrogen bonded and less disordered as compared to the high-temperature liquid. The spectrum of the low-temperature liquid is essentially that seen in low-density amorphous water. This similarity suggests that the liquid-liquid transition observed here also exists in neat undercooled water, providing a unified explanation for many of its anomalies.

Abstract:This paper investigates to identify phase transitions in condensed liquid cesium metal by considering the variation of intermolecular potential parameters \epsilon and r_m in the whole liquid range, with \epsilon being the potential well-depth and r_m the position of minimum potential. These parameters were obtained from the parameters of a new equation of state that was derived recently by using the characteristic potential function. By this method, transitions at about 575 K, 800 K, 1000 K, 1350 K and 1650 K were identified. Transitions at 575 K, 800 K, and 1000 K are weak but, the one at 1350 K is very significant and has been explored experimentally and theoretically as the metal non-metal transition (MNMT), which is a phase transition before the critical condition dominates the thermodynamics. Also variations of the linear correlation coefficient of the isotherms generate a spot point pattern of these transitions. Our observations at 575 K for \epsilon and r_m are in accord with the anomalies in adiabatic thermal coefficient of pressure, density, viscosity, electrical conductivity, and structure factor.
Liquid-liquid phase transition in deeply supercooled Stillinger-Weber silicon

Abstract:The existence of a phase transition between two distinct liquid phases in single-component network-forming liquids (e.g., water, silica, silicon) has elicited considerable scientific interest. The challenge, both for experiments and simulations, is that the liquid-liquid phase transition occurs under deeply supercooled conditions, where crystallization occurs very rapidly. Thus, early evidence from numerical equation of state studies was challenged, with the argument that slow spontaneous crystallization had been misinterpreted as evidence of a second liquid state. Rigorous free energy calculations have subsequently confirmed the existence of a liquid-liquid phase transition in some models of water, and exciting new experimental evidence has since supported these computational results. Similar results have so far not been found for silicon. Here, we present results from free energy calculations performed for silicon modelled with the classical, empirical Stillinger-Weber potential. Through a careful study employing state-of-the-art constrained simulation protocols and numerous checks for thermodynamic consistency, we find that there are two distinct metastable liquid states and a phase transition. Our results resolve a long-standing debate concerning the existence of a liquid-liquid transition in supercooled liquid silicon and address key questions regarding the nature of the phase transition and the associated critical point.

Abstract:The phase diagram of the two-dimensional particles interacting through a smooth version of Stell-Hemmer interaction was studied using Monte Carlo computer simulations. By evaluating the pressure-volume isotherms, we observed liquid-liquid, liquid-gas phase transitions and three stable crystal phases. The model shows the liquid-liquid critical point in stable liquid phase and is confirmed by observing properties of other thermodynamic functions such as heat capacity and isothermal compressibility, for example. The liquid-gas and the liquid-liquid critical points were estimated within the thermodynamic limit.

Abstract:We present a review on the study of metastable silicon, primarily focusing mainly on the aspects of liquid-liquid transition, critical point and phase behaviour, structural and dynamic properties of liquid phase as well as crystal nucleation. We begin with an extensive survey of the investigations of liquid silicon pursued over three decades, with salient experimental, theoretical and simulation results. Following which we present various scenarios put forward to rationalize the density and related anomalies often observed in water and other network forming liquids. After which we present the more recent investigations (both simulation and experimental works) of the phase behavior of Silicon. Since a significant part of metastable silicon work is on a classical empirical potential an important question to address is the reliability of this potential in describing the behavior of silicon. To provide a critical assessment of the applicability of classical simulation results to real silicon we present a comparison of the structural, dynamical, and thermodynamic quantities obtained from the SW potential with those from ab initio simulations and with available experimental data. We also discuss the sensitivity of the thermodynamic properties to model parameters.

Abstract:Previous studies of the structure of liquid water under pressure performed by neutron diffraction, allowed us to establish two structural limits in liquid water. These two limits are closely connected to the two known forms of amorphous ice : the low density amorphous ice (LDA) and the high density amorphous ice (HDA). In the present paper, we propose some interpretation of our data in terms of a two level type model of water. This leads to show some evidence of a liquid-liquid phase transition in liquid supercooled water. The result looks in agreement with recent computer simulations that incorporate the two forms of amorphous ice.

Abstract:We investigate the relation between changes in dynamic and thermodynamic anomalies arising from the presence of the liquid-liquid critical point in (i) Two models of water, TIP5P and ST2, which display a first order liquid-liquid phase transition at low temperatures; (ii) the Jagla model, a spherically symmetric two-scale potential known to possess a liquid-liquid critical point, in which the competition between two liquid structures is generated by repulsive and attractive ramp interactions; and (iii) A Hamiltonian model of water where the idea of two length/energy scales is built in; this model also displays a first order liquid-liquid phase transition at low temperatures besides the first order liquid-gas phase transition at high temperatures. We find a correlation between the dynamic fragility crossover and the locus of specific heat maxima C-P(max) ("Widom line") emanating from the critical point. Our findings are consistent with a possible relation between the previously hypothesized liquid-liquid phase transition and the transition in the dynamics recently observed in neutron scattering experiments on confined water. More generally, we argue that this connection between C-P(max) P and the dynamic crossover is not limited to the case of water, a hydrogen bonded network liquid, but is a more general feature of crossing the Widom line, an extension of the first-order coexistence line in the supercritical region. We present evidence from experiments and computer simulations supporting the hypothesis that water displays polyamorphism, i.e., water separates into two distinct liquid phases. This concept of a new liquid-liquid phase transition is finding application to other liquids as well as water, such as silicon and silica. We also discuss related puzzles, such as the mysterious behavior of confined water and the "skin" of hydration water near a biomolecule. Specifically, using molecular dynamics simulations, we also investigate the relation between the dynamic transitions of biomolecules (lysozyme and DNA) and the dynamic and thermodynamic properties of hydration water. We find that the dynamic transition of the macromolecules, sometimes called a "protein glass transition", occurs at the temperature of dynamic crossover in the diffusivity of hydration water, and also coincides with the maxima of the isobaric specific heat C-P and the temperature derivative of the orientational order parameter. We relate these findings to the hypothesis of a liquid-liquid critical point in water. Our simulations are consistent with the possibility that the protein glass transition results from a change in the behavior of hydration water, specifically from crossing the Widom line.
Liquid crystal phases of two-dimensional dipolar gases and Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless melting

Abstract:Liquid crystals are phases of matter intermediate between crystals and liquids. Whereas classical liquid crystals have been known for a long time and are used in electro-optical displays, much less is known about their quantum counterparts. There is growing evidence that quantum liquid crystals play a central role in many electron systems including high temperature superconductors, but a quantitative understanding is lacking due to disorder and other complications. Here, we analyse the quantum phase diagram of a two-dimensional dipolar gas, which exhibits stripe, nematic and supersolid phases. We calculate the stiffness constants determining the stability of the nematic and stripe phases, and the melting of the stripes set by the proliferation of topological defects is analysed microscopically. Our results for the critical temperatures of these phases demonstrate that a controlled study of the interplay between quantum liquid and superfluid phases is within experimental reach for the first time, using dipolar gases.

Glass Transitions and Critical Points in Orientationally Disordered Crystals and Structural Glassformers: "Strong" Liquids are More Interesting Than We Thought

Abstract:When liquids are classified using Tg -scaled Arrhenius plots of relaxation times (or relative rates of entropy increase above Tg) across a "strong-fragile" spectrum of behaviors, the "strong" liquids have always appeared rather uninteresting [1, 2]. Here we use updated plots of the same type for crystal phases of the "rotator" variety [3] to confirm that the same pattern of behavior exists for these simpler (center of mass ordered) systems. However, in this case we can show that the "strong" systems owe their behavior to the existence of lambda-type order-disorder transitions at higher temperatures (directly observable in the cases where observations are not interrupted by prior melting). Furthermore, the same observation can be made for other systems in which the glass transition, at which the ordering is arrested, occurs in the thermodynamic ground state of the system. This prompts an enquiry into the behavior of strong liquids at high temperatures. Using the case of silica itself, we again find strong evidence from extended ion dynamics simulations, for a lambda transition at high temperatures, but only if pressure is adjusted to a critical value. In this case the lambda point is identifiable as a liquid-liquid critical point of the type suggested for supercooled water. We recognize the possibility of exploring, a postiori, the consequences of rapid cooling of laboratory liquid SiO2 from >5000K and multi-GPa pressures, using the phenomenology of damage-induced plasmas in optical fibers. The ramifications of these considerations will be explored to establish a "big picture"2 of the relation of thermodynamic transitions to supercooled liquid phenomenology [4, 5].

Abstract:We review our recent study on the polyamorphism of the liquid and glass states in a monatomic system, a two-scale spherical-symmetric Jagla model with both attractive and repulsive interactions. This potential with a parametrization for which crystallization can be avoided and both the glass transition and the liquid-liquid phase transition are clearly separated, displays water-like anomalies as well as polyamorphism in both liquid and glassy states, providing a unique opportunity to study the interplay between the liquid-liquid phase transition and the glass transition. Our study on a simple model may be useful in understanding recent studies of polyamorphism in metallic glasses.

Abstract:Although H2 O has been the focus of a considerable amount of research since the beginning of the century, its peculiar physical properties are still not well understood. First we discuss some of the anomalies of this `complex fluid'. Then we describe a qualitative interpretation in terms of percolation concepts. Finally, we discuss recent experiments and simulations relating to the liquid-liquid phase transition hypothesis that, in addition to the known critical point in water, there exists a `second' critical point at low temperatures. In particular, we discuss very recent measurements at Tsukuba of the compression-induced melting and decompression-induced melting lines of high-pressure forms of ice. We show how knowledge of these lines enables one to obtain an approximation for the Gibbs potential G (P ,T ) and the equation of state V (P ,T ) for water, both of which are consistent with the possible continuity of liquid water and the amorphous forms of solid water.

Abstract:Temperature dependence of viscosities of liquid Sn, Cu, Pb-38.1 Sn-61.9, Pb44.8Bi55.2, and Cu0.7Sn99.3 has been studied by a torsional oscillation viscometer. During the measurement process, a deviation from the Arrhenius behavior is found when the temperature is lowered to about 60 K higher than the melting point. The abnormal increasing of the viscosity and the activation energy indicates the changes of the elementary melt structure during cooling towards the melting point. The deviation region from Arrhenius viscosity is defined as the transition state. The differential scanning calorimeter experiments also show the existence of the critical transition state in liquid metals near the melting point. The drastic increase of the viscosity in the transition state can be regarded as continuum transition and be presented well by the amended Arrhenius equation which is based on the critical phenomenon. Abstract:Liquid-liquid and liquid-vapor coexistence regions of various water models were determined by Monte Carlo (MC) simulations of isotherms of density fluctuation-restricted systems and by Gibbs ensemble MC simulations. All studied water models show multiple liquid-liquid phase transitions in the supercooled region: we observe two transitions of the TIP4P, TIP5P, and SPCE models and three transitions of the ST2 model. The location of these phase transitions with respect to the liquid-vapor coexistence curve and the glass temperature is highly sensitive to the water model and its implementation. We suggest that the apparent thermodynamic singularity of real liquid water in the supercooled region at about 228 K is caused by an approach to the spinodal of the first (lowest density) liquid-liquid phase transition. The well-known density maximum of liquid water at 277 K is related to the second liquid-liquid phase transition, which is located at positive pressures with a critical point close to the maximum. A possible order parameter and the universality class of liquid-liquid phase transitions in one-component fluids are discussed.

The interplay between liquid-liquid and ferroelectric phase transitions in supercooled water

Abstract:The distinctive characteristics of water, evident in its thermodynamic anomalies, have implications across disciplines from biology to geophysics. Considered a valid hypothesis to rationalize its unique properties, a liquid-liquid phase transition in water's supercooled regime has nowadays been observed in several molecular dynamics simulations and is being actively researched experimentally. Here, we highlight intriguing and far-reaching implications of water: the ferroelectric and liquid-liquid phase transitions can be designed as two facets of the same underlying phenomenon. Our results are based on the analysis of extensive molecular dynamics simulations and are explained in the context of a classical density functional theory in mean-field approximation valid for a polar liquid. The theory underpins the potential role of ferroelectricity in promoting the liquid-liquid phase transition. The existence of ferroelectric order in supercooled low-density liquid water is confirmed by the observation in molecular dynamics simulations of collective modes in polarization fluctuations dynamics, traceable to spontaneous breaking of continuous rotational symmetry. Our work opens the door to new experimental investigations of the static and dynamic behavior of water polarization.

Liquid-liquid critical point in supercooled silicon

Abstract:A novel liquid-liquid phase transition has been proposed and investigated in a wide variety of pure substances recently, including water, silica and silicon. From computer simulations using the Stillinger-Weber classical empirical potential, Sastry and Angell [1] demonstrated a first order liquid-liquid transition in supercooled silicon, subsequently supported by experimental and simulation studies. Here, we report evidence for a liquid-liquid critical end point at negative pressures, from computer simulations using the SW potential. Compressibilities exhibit a growing maximum upon lowering temperature below 1500 K and isotherms exhibit density discontinuities below 1120 K, at negative pressure. Below 1120 K, isotherms obtained from constant volume-temperature simulations exhibit non-monotonic, van der Waals-like behavior signaling a first order transition. We identify Tc ~ 1120 +/- 12 K, Pc -0.60 +/- 0.15 GPa as the critical temperature and pressure for the liquid-liquid critical point. The structure of the liquid changes dramatically upon decreasing the temperature and pressure. Diffusivities vary over 4 orders of magnitude, and exhibit anomalous pressure dependence near the critical point. A strong relationship between local geometry quantified by the coordination number, and diffusivity, is seen, suggesting that atomic mobility in both low and high density liquids can usefully be analyzed in terms of defects in the tetrahedral network structure. We have constructed the phase diagram of supercooled silicon. We identify the lines of compressibility, density extrema (maxima and minima) and the spinodal which reveal the interconnection between thermodynamic anomalies and the phase behaviour of the system as suggested in previous works [2-9]
