Abstract:In this paper we establish an asymptotic formula for the number of rational points of bounded anticanonical height which lie on a certain Zariski dense subset of the biprojective hypersurface \begin{align*} x_1y_1^2+...+x_sy_s^2 = 0 \end{align*} in $\mathbb{P}^{s-1} \times \mathbb{P}^{s-1} $ with $s \geq 7$. This confirms the Manin conjecture for this variety.

Abstract:Let $f,g\in\mathbb{Z}[u_1,u_2]$ be binary quadratic forms. We provide upper bounds for the number of rational points $(u,v)\in\mathbb{P}^1(\mathbb{Q})\times\mathbb{P}^1(\mathbb{Q})$ such that the ternary conic \[ X_{(u,v)}: f(u_1,u_2)x^2 + g(v_1,v_2)y^2 = z^2 \] has a rational point. We also give some conditions under which lower bounds exist.

Abstract:The local invariants of a meromorphic quadratic differential on a compact Riemann surface are the orders of zeros and poles, and the residues at the poles of even orders. The main result of this paper is that with few exceptions, every pattern of local invariants can be obtained by a quadratic differential on some Riemann surface. The exceptions are completely classified and only occur in genera zero and one. Moreover, in the case of a nonconnected stratum, we show that, with three exceptions in genus one, every invariants can be realized in each connected component of the stratum. These results are obtained using the flat metric induced by the differentials. We give an application by bounding the number of disjoint cylinders on a primitive quadratic differential.

Abstract:We derive asymptotic formulas for the number of rational points on a smooth projective quadratic hypersurface of dimension at least three inside of a shrinking adelic open neighbourhood. This is a quantitative version of weak approximation for quadrics and allows us to deduce the best growth rate of the size of such an adelic neighbourhood for which equidistribution is preserved.

Abstract:An integral binary quartic form is said to be locally soluble (resp. soluble) if the corresponding genus one curve has a rational point over $\mathbb{Q}_v$ for every place $v$ of $\mathbb{Q}$ (resp. over $\mathbb{Q}$). We consider the proportion of soluble integral binary quartic forms in locally soluble forms. Bhargava showed the proportion is positive when one considers all binary quartics, and Bhargava--Ho proved the proportion is zero for a subfamily. In this paper, we estimate the proportions for some other subfamilies. It relies on results for elliptic curves $y^2=x^3-n^2x$ by Heath-Brown, Xiong--Zaharescu and Smith.

Abstract:Given two irreducible conics $C$ and $D$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ with $q$ odd, we show that there are $q^2/4+O(q^{3/2})$ points $P$ in $\mathbb{P}^2(\mathbb{F}_q)$ such that $P$ is external to $C$ and internal to $D$. This answers a question of Korchmáros. We also prove the analogous result for higher-dimensional smooth quadric hypersurfaces over $\mathbb{P}^{n-1}$ with $n$ odd, where the answer is $q^{n-1}/4+O(q^{n-\frac{3}{2}})$.

These maps are restrictions of a polynomial map on $\mathbb{C}^4$ preserving each of the quadrics. The study in this paper is a mixture of rigorous and experimental ones, where for the experimental study we rely on Bertini which is a reliable and fast software for expensive numerical calculations in complex algebraic geometry.

Abstract:We introduce a new class of triangulated categories, which are Verdier quotients of three-Calabi-Yau categories from (decorated) marked surfaces, and show that its spaces of stability conditions can be identified with moduli spaces of framed quadratic differentials on Riemann surfaces with arbitrary order zeros and arbitrary higher order poles. A main tool in our proof is a comparison of two exchange graphs, obtained by tilting hearts in the quotient categories and by flipping mixed angulations associated with the quadratic differentials.

Local Euler characteristics of $A_n$-singularities and their application to hyperbolicity

Abstract:Wahl's local Euler characteristic measures the local contributions of a singularity to the usual Euler characteristic of a sheaf. Using tools from toric geometry, we study the local Euler characteristic of sheaves of symmetric differentials for isolated surface singularities of type $A_n$. We prove an explicit formula for the local Euler characteristic of the $m$th symmetric power of the cotangent bundle; this is a quasi-polynomial in $m$ of period $n+1$. We also express the components of the local Euler characteristic as a count of lattice points in a non-convex polyhedron, again showing it is a quasi-polynomial. We apply our computations to obtain new examples of algebraic quasi-hyperbolic surfaces in $\mathbb{P}^3$ of low degree. We show that an explicit family of surfaces with many singularities constructed by Labs has no genus $0$ curves for the members of degree at least $8$ and no curves of genus $0$ or $1$ for degree at least $10$.

Abstract:Let U be a homogeneous variety over rational numbers of some linear algebraic group. Fix an integral model and assume the existence of infinitely many integral points. Then one would like to give an asymptotic count with the help of some height function. In many cases, with the help of measure rigidity of unipotent flows, we reduce this problem to one on equivariant birational geometry. For instance, we show that if G and H are both connected, semisimple, simply connected and without compact factors, then U=G/H is strongly Hardy-Littlewood with respect to certain height function. We also show that when H is "large" in H and both G and H are connected, reductive and without non-trivial Q-characters, then for every equivariant height, the asymptotic of integral points is the same as the volume asymptotic up to a constant. Three concrete examples with explicit heights are also provided to illustrate our approach.

Abstract:We develop a version of Ekedahl's geometric sieve for integral quadratic forms of rank at least five. As one ranges over the zeros of such quadratic forms, we use the sieve to compute the density of coprime values of polynomials, and furthermore, to address a question about local solubility in families of varieties parameterised by the zeros.

Abstract:We show that a very general quartic hypersurface in $\mathbb P^6 $ over a field of characteristic different from 2 does not admit a decomposition of the diagonal, hence is not retract rational. This generalizes a result of Nicaise--Ottem, who showed stable irrationality over fields of characteristic 0. To prove our result, we introduce a new cycle-theoretic obstruction that may be seen as an analogue of the motivic obstruction for rationality in characteristic zero, introduced by Nicaise--Shinder and Kontsevich--Tschinkel.
