Abstract:We present an optimization procedure for generic polygonal or polyhedral meshes, tailored for the Virtual Element Method (VEM). Once the local quality of the mesh elements is analyzed through a quality indicator specific to the VEM, groups of elements are agglomerated to optimize the global mesh quality. A user-set parameter regulates the percentage of mesh elements, and consequently of faces, edges, and vertices, to be removed. This significantly reduces the total number of degrees of freedom associated with a discrete problem defined over the mesh with the VEM, particularly for high-order formulations. We show how the VEM convergence rate is preserved in the optimized meshes, and the approximation errors are comparable with those obtained with the original ones. We observe that the optimization has a regularization effect over low-quality meshes, removing the most pathological elements. In such cases, these "badly-shaped" elements yield a system matrix with very large condition number, which may cause the VEM to diverge, while the optimized meshes lead to convergence. We conclude by showing how the optimization of a real CAD model can be used effectively in the simulation of a time-dependent problem.

Abstract:Since its introduction, the Virtual Element Method (VEM) was shown to be able to deal with a large variety of polygons, while achieving good convergence rates. The regularity assumptions proposed in the VEM literature to guarantee the convergence on a theoretical basis are therefore quite general. They have been deduced in analogy to the similar conditions developed in the Finite Element Methods (FEMs) analysis. In this work, we experimentally show that the VEM still converges with almost optimal rates and low errors in the L2 and H1 norms even if we significantly break the regularity assumptions that are used in the literature. These results suggest that the regularity assumptions proposed so far might be overestimated. We also exhibit examples on which the VEM sub-optimally converges or diverges. Finally, we introduce a mesh quality indicator that experimentally correlates the entity of the violation of the regularity assumptions and the performance of the VEM solution, thus predicting if a dataset is potentially critical for VEM.

Abstract:We propose a quality-based optimization strategy to reduce the total number of degrees of freedom associated to a discrete problem defined over a polygonal tessellation with the Virtual Element Method. The presented Quality Agglomeration algorithm relies only on the geometrical properties of the problem polygonal mesh, agglomerating groups of neighboring elements. We test this approach in the context of fractured porous media, in which the generation of a global conforming mesh on a Discrete Fracture Network leads to a considerable number of unknowns, due to the presence of highly complex geometries and the significant size of the computational domains. We show the efficiency and the robustness of our approach, applied independently on each fracture for different network configurations, exploiting the flexibility of the Virtual Element Method in handling general polygonal elements.

Abstract:The mesh generated by reverse engineering or simple tessellations of solid models usually cannot be directly applied to analysis due to bad quality. An iterative optimization algorithm is proposed. Mesh is first refined to get enough degree of freedom for changing topology and geometry. Then within a given tolerance the mesh quality is improved by simplification and regularization. This progress is iterated until the mesh quality meets the requirement or a given maximum number of iterations are reached. The experimental results are given to demonstrate the flexibility and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
Virtual elements on agglomerated finite elements to increase the critical time step in elastodynamic simulations

Abstract:In this paper, we use the first-order virtual element method (VEM) to investigate the effect of shape quality of polyhedra in the estimation of the critical time step for explicit three-dimensional elastodynamic finite element (FE) simulations. Low-quality finite elements are common when meshing realistic complex components, and while tetrahedral meshing technology is generally robust, meshing algorithms cannot guarantee high-quality meshes for arbitrary geometries or for non-water-tight computer-aided design models. For reliable simulations on such meshes, we consider FE meshes with tetrahedral and prismatic elements that have badly-shaped elements$-$tetrahedra with dihedral angles close to $0^\circ$ and $180^\circ$, and slender prisms with triangular faces that have short edges$-$and agglomerate such `bad' elements with neighboring elements to form a larger polyhedral virtual element. On each element, the element-eigenvalue inequality is used to estimate the critical time step. For a suite of illustrative finite element meshes with $\epsilon$ being a mesh-coordinate parameter that leads to poor mesh quality, we show that adopting VEM on the agglomerated polyhedra yield critical time steps that are insensitive as $\epsilon \rightarrow 0$. The significant reduction in solution time on meshes with agglomerated virtual elements vis-$à$-vis tetrahedral meshes is demonstrated through explicit dynamics simulations on a tapered beam.

Abstract:The mesh flexibility offered by the virtual element method through the permission of arbitrary element geometries, and the seamless incorporation of `hanging' nodes, has made the method increasingly attractive in the context of adaptive remeshing. There exists a healthy literature concerning error estimation and adaptive refinement techniques for virtual elements while the topic of adaptive coarsening (i.e. de-refinement) is in its infancy. The creation of a quasi-optimal mesh is based on the principle of quasi-even error distribution over the elements which inherently relies on localized refinement and coarsening techniques. Thus, necessitating a fully adaptive remeshing procedure. In this work a novel fully adaptive remeshing procedure for the virtual element method is presented. Additionally, novel procedures are proposed for the identification of elements qualifying for refinement or coarsening based on user-defined targets. Specifically, a target percentage error, target number of elements, or target number of nodes can be selected. Numerical results demonstrate that the adaptive remeshing procedure can meet any prescribed target while creating a quasi-optimal mesh. The proposed fully adaptive procedure is of particular interest in engineering applications requiring an efficient simulation of a given accuracy, or desiring a simulation with the maximum possible accuracy for a given computational constraint.

Abstract:An efficient Advancing Layer Method (ALM) is presented to create semi-structured prisms on viscous walls, in which a procedure that checks possible front intersections is essential to its efficiency. This paper develops various novel schemes to improve the algorithm’s efficiency precisely while not sacrificing its robustness and the resulting mesh quality. First, it employs a set of new techniques, and data structures are developed to improve the efficiency of the front-check procedure. Then, within each octant, a new filter is developed to reduce the intersection computations in the searching process. In addition, data structures are well designed to store the contiguously accessed data in each computing-intensive loop in a contiguous space for a potentially better cache hit ratio. We built a geometry model library formed by examples of industrial complexity to demonstrate the practicability of the algorithm. All the efforts mentioned above enable us to reduce the percentage of computing time taken by intersection check to an acceptable level (approximately 26%), which make it no longer be the most time-consuming part.
Effective polygonal mesh generation and refinement for VEM

Abstract:In the present work we introduce a novel refinement algorithm for two-dimensional elliptic partial differential equations discretized with Virtual Element Method (VEM). The algorithm improves the numerical solution accuracy and the mesh quality through a controlled refinement strategy applied to the generic polygonal elements of the domain tessellation. The numerical results show that the outlined strategy proves to be versatile and applicable to any two-dimensional problem where polygonal meshes offer advantages. In particular, we focus on the simulation of flow in fractured media, specifically using the Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) model. A residual a-posteriori error estimator tailored for the DFN case is employed. We chose this particular application to emphasize the effectiveness of the algorithm in handling complex geometries. All the numerical tests demonstrate optimal convergence rates for all the tested VEM orders.

Abstract:The lowest-order Neural Approximated Virtual Element Method on polygonal elements is proposed here. This method employs a neural network to locally approximate the Virtual Element basis functions, thereby eliminating issues concerning stabilization and projection operators, which are the key components of the standard Virtual Element Method. We propose different training strategies for the neural network training, each correlated by the theoretical justification and with a different level of accuracy. Several numerical experiments are proposed to validate our procedure on general polygonal meshes and demonstrate the advantages of the proposed method across different problem formulations, particularly in cases where the heavy usage of projection and stabilization terms may represent challenges for the standard version of the method. Particular attention is reserved to triangular meshes with hanging nodes which assume a central role in many virtual element applications.

Abstract:Mesh adaptivity is a useful tool for efficient solution to partial differential equations in very complex geometries. In the present paper we discuss the use of polygonal mesh refinement in order to tackle two common issues: first, adaptively refine a provided good quality polygonal mesh preserving quality, second, improve the quality of a coarse poor quality polygonal mesh during the refinement process on very complex domains. For finite element methods and triangular meshes, convergence of a posteriori mesh refinement algorithms and optimality properties have been widely investigated, whereas convergence and optimality are still open problems for polygonal adaptive methods. In this article, we propose a new refinement method for convex cells with the aim of introducing some properties useful to tackle convergence and optimality for adaptive methods. The key issues in refining convex general polygons are: a refinement dependent only on the marked cells for refinement at each refinement step; a partial quality improvement, or, at least, a non degenerate quality of the mesh during the refinement iterations; a bound of the number of unknowns of the discrete problem with respect to the number of the cells in the mesh. Although these properties are quite common for refinement algorithms of triangular meshes, these issues are still open problems for polygonal meshes
On the maximum angle conditions for polyhedra with virtual element methods

Abstract:Finite element methods are well-known to admit robust optimal convergence on simplicial meshes satisfying the maximum angle conditions. But how to generalize this condition to polyhedra is unknown in the literature. In this work, we argue that this generation is possible for virtual element methods (VEMs). In particular, we develop an anisotropic analysis framework for VEMs where the virtual spaces and projection spaces remain abstract and can be problem-adapted, carrying forward the ``virtual'' spirit of VEMs. Three anisotropic cases will be analyzed under this framework: (1) elements only contain non-shrinking inscribed balls but are not necessarily star convex to those balls; (2) elements are cut arbitrarily from a background Cartesian mesh, which can extremely shrink; (3) elements contain different materials on which the virtual spaces involve discontinuous coefficients. The error estimates are guaranteed to be independent of polyhedral element shapes. The present work largely improves the current theoretical results in the literature and also broadens the scope of the application of VEMs.

Abstract:In this paper, we study applications of the virtual element method (VEM) for simulating the deformation of multiphase composites. The VEM is a Galerkin approach that is applicable to meshes that consist of arbitrarily-shaped polygonal and polyhedral (simple and nonsimple) elements. In the VEM, the basis functions are defined as the solution of a local elliptic partial differential equation, and are never explicitly computed in the implementation of the method. The stifness matrix of each element is built by using the elliptic projection operator of the internal virtual work (bilinear form) and it consists of two terms: a consistency term that is exactly computed (linear patch test is satisfied) and a correction term (ensures stability) that is orthogonal to affine displacement fields and has the right scaling. The VEM simplifies mesh generation for a multiphase composite: a stiff inclusion can be modeled using a single polygonal or polyhedral element. Attributes of the virtual element approach are highlighted through comparisons with Voronoi-cell lattice models, which provide discrete representations of material structure. The comparisons involve a suite of two-dimensional linear elastic problems: patch test, axisymmetric circular inclusion problem, and the deformation of a three-phase composite. The simulations demonstrate the accuracy and flexibility of the virtual element method.

Abstract:We analyze and validate the virtual element method combined with a boundary correction similar to the one in [1,2], to solve problems on two dimensional domains with curved boundaries approximated by polygonal domains. We focus on the case of approximating domains obtained as the union of squared elements out of a uniform structured mesh, such as the one that naturally arises when the domain is issued from an image. We show, both theoretically and numerically, that resorting to polygonal elements allows the assumptions required for stability to be satisfied for any polynomial order. This allows us to fully exploit the potential of higher order methods. Efficiency is ensured by a novel static condensation strategy acting on the edges of the decomposition.

Abstract:In this work, we propose an extension of the mixed Virtual Element Method (VEM) for bi-dimensional computational grids with curvilinear edge elements. The approximation by means of rectilinear edges of a domain with curvilinear geometrical feature, such as a portion of domain boundary or an internal interface, may introduce a geometrical error that degrades the expected order of convergence of the scheme. In the present work a suitable VEM approximation space is proposed to consistently handle curvilinear geometrical objects, thus recovering optimal convergence rates. The resulting numerical scheme is presented along with its theoretical analysis and several numerical test cases to validate the proposed approach.

Abstract:We present a virtual element method (VEM)-based topology optimization framework using polyhedral elements, which allows for convenient handling of non-Cartesian design domains in three dimensions. We take full advantage of the VEM properties by creating a unified approach in which the VEM is employed in both the structural and the optimization phases. In the structural problem, the VEM is adopted to solve the three-dimensional elasticity equation. Compared to the finite element method, the VEM does not require numerical integration (when linear elements are used) and is less sensitive to degenerated elements (e.g., ones with skinny faces or small edges). In the optimization problem, we introduce a continuous approximation of material densities using the VEM basis functions. When compared to the standard element-wise constant approximation, the continuous approximation enriches the geometrical representation of structural topologies. Through two numerical examples with exact solutions, we verify the convergence and accuracy of both the VEM approximations of the displacement and material density fields. We also present several design examples involving non-Cartesian domains, demonstrating the main features of the proposed VEM-based topology optimization framework. The source code for a MATLAB implementation of the proposed work, named <span class="u-monospace">PolyTop3D</span>, is available in the (electronic) Supplementary Material accompanying this publication.

Abstract:In this work, we explore the application of the Virtual Element Methods for Neumann boundary Optimal Control Problems in saddle point formulation. The method is proposed for arbitrarily polynomial order of accuracy and general polygonal meshes. Our contribution includes a rigorous a priori error estimate that holds for general polynomial degree. On the numerical side, we present (i) an initial convergence test that reflects our theoretical findings, and (ii) a second test case based on a more application-oriented experiment. For the latter test, we focus on the role of VEM stabilization, conducting a detailed experimental analysis, and proposing an alternative structure-preserving strategy to circumvent issues related to the choice of the stabilization parameter.

Abstract:An posteriori error analysis for the virtual element method (VEM) applied to general elliptic problems is presented. The resulting error estimator is of residual-type and applies on very general polygonal/polyhedral meshes. The estimator is fully computable as it relies only on quantities available from the VEM solution, namely its degrees of freedom and element-wise polynomial projection. Upper and lower bounds of the error estimator with respect to the VEM approximation error are proven. The error estimator is used to drive adaptive mesh refinement in a number of test problems. Mesh adaptation is particularly simple to implement since elements with consecutive co-planar edges/faces are allowed and, therefore, locally adapted meshes do not require any local mesh post-processing.

Abstract:We revisit classical Virtual Element approximations on polygonal and polyhedral decompositions. We also recall the treatment proposed for dealing with decompositions into polygons with curved edges. In the second part of the paper we introduce a couple of new ideas for the construction of VEM-approximations on domains with curved boundary, both in two and three dimensions. The new approach looks promising, although sound numerical tests should be made to validate the efficiency of the method.

Abstract:In this paper, we explore the use of the Virtual Element Method concepts to solve scalar and system hyperbolic problems on general polygonal grids. The new schemes stem from the active flux approach \cite{AF1}, which combines the usage of point values at the element boundaries with an additional degree of freedom representing the average of the solution within each control volume. Along the lines of the family of residual distribution schemes introduced in \cite{Abgrall_AF,abgrall2023activefluxtriangularmeshes} to bridge the active flux technique, we devise novel third order accurate methods that rely on the VEM technology to discretize gradients of the numerical solution by means of a polynomial-free approximation, hence adopting a virtual basis that is locally defined for each element. The obtained discretization is globally continuous, and for nonlinear problems it needs a stabilization which is provided by the \textit{a posteriori} MOOD paradigm \cite{Mood1}. This is applied to both point and average values of the discrete solution. We show applications to scalar problems, as well as to the acoustics and Euler equations in 2D. The accuracy and the robustness of the proposed schemes are assessed against a suite of benchmarks involving smooth solutions, shock waves and other discontinuities.

Abstract:In this paper, we are interested in solving optimal shape design problems. A critical challenge within this framework is generating the mesh of the computational domain at each optimisation step according to the information provided by the minimising functional. To enhance efficiency, we propose a strategy based on the Finite Element Method (FEM) and the Virtual Element Method (VEM). Specifically, we exploit the flexibility of the VEM in dealing with generally shaped polygons, including those with hanging nodes, to update the mesh solely in regions where the shape varies. In the remaining parts of the domain, we employ the FEM, known for its robustness and applicability in such scenarios. We numerically validate the proposed approach on the T.E.A.M. 25 benchmark problem and compare the results obtained with this procedure with those proposed in the literature based solely on the FEM. Moreover, since the T.E.A.M. 25 benchmark problem is also characterised by curved shapes, we utilise the VEM to accurately incorporate these "exact" curves into the discrete solution itself.
