Abstract:We construct a new large family of finitely generated groups with continuum many values of the following monotone parameters: spectral radius, critical percolation, and asymptotic entropy. We also present several open problems on other monotone parameters.

Abstract:For a graph $\Gamma$, the multiplicity of the eigenvalue $0$, denoted by $\eta(\Gamma)$, is called the nullity of $\Gamma$. Also the energy of $\Gamma$, denoted by $\mathcal{E}(\Gamma)$, is defined as the sum of the absolute values of the eigenvalues of $\Gamma$. The index of a subgroup $H$ in a group $G$ is denoted by $[G:H]$. For a prime $p$, let $G$ be a finite $p$-solvable group whose order is divisible by $p$. Also let $\Omega_p(G)$ be the set of all $p$-singular elements of $G$. In this paper, we apply block theory of finite groups to show that the Cayley graph $\Gamma_p(G):=\mathrm{Cay}(G,\Omega_p(G))$ is an integral graph with $\eta(\Gamma_p(G))=|G|-[G:O_{p^\prime}(G)]$, where $O_{p^\prime}(G)$ is the largest normal subgroup of $G$ whose order is co-prime to $p$. We also find a lower bound for $\mathcal{E}(\Gamma_p(G))$. Finally, we prove that the diameter of $\Gamma_p(G)$ is at most $ |G|_p$.

Abstract:We consider the random Cayley graphs of a sequence of finite nilpotent groups of diverging sizes $G=G(n)$, whose ranks and nilpotency classes are uniformly bounded. For some $k=k(n)$ such that $1\ll\log k \ll \log |G|$, we pick a random set of generators $S=S(n)$ by sampling $k$ elements $Z_1,\ldots,Z_k$ from $G$ uniformly at random with replacement, and set $S:=\{Z_j^{\pm 1}:1 \le j\le k \}$. We show that the simple random walk on Cay$(G,S)$ exhibits cutoff with high probability.

Abstract:Owing to their interesting spectral properties, the synthetic crystals over lattices other than regular Euclidean lattices, such as hyperbolic and fractal ones, have attracted renewed attention, especially from materials and meta-materials research communities. They can be studied under the umbrella of quantum dynamics over Cayley graphs of finitely generated groups. In this work, we investigate numerical aspects related to the quantum dynamics over such Cayley graphs. Using an algebraic formulation of the "periodic boundary condition" due to Lueck [Geom. Funct. Anal. 4, 455-481 (1994)], we devise a practical and converging numerical method that resolves the true bulk spectrum of the Hamiltonians. Exact results on the matrix elements of the resolvent, derived from the combinatorics of the Cayley graphs, give us the means to validate our algorithms and also to obtain new combinatorial statements. Our results open the systematic research of quantum dynamics over Cayley graphs of a very large family of finitely generated groups, which includes the free and Fuchsian groups.

Abstract:Recently, several works by a number of authors have provided characterizations of integral undirected Cayley graphs over generalized dihedral groups and generalized dicyclic groups. We generalize and unify these results in two different ways. Firstly, we work over arbitrary non-abelian finite groups admitting an abelian subgroup of index 2. Secondly, our main result actually characterizes integral mixed Cayley graphs over such finite groups, in the spirit of a very recent result of Kadyan--Bhattarcharjya in the abelian case.

Abstract:A countable, bounded degree graph is almost finite if it has a tiling with isomorphic copies of finitely many Følner sets, and we call it strongly almost finite, if the tiling can be randomized so that the probability that a vertex is on the boundary of a tile is uniformly small. We give various equivalents for strong almost finiteness. In particular, we prove that Property A together with the Følner property is equivalent to strong almost finiteness. Using these characterizations, we show that graphs of subexponential growth and Schreier graphs of amenable groups are always strongly almost finite, generalizing the celebrated result of Downarowicz, Huczek and Zhang about amenable Cayley graphs, based on graph theoretic rather than group theoretic principles. We give various equivalents to Property A for graphs, and show that if a sequence of graphs of Property A (in a uniform sense) converges to a graph $G$ in the neighborhood distance (a purely combinatorial analogue of the classical Benjamini-Schramm distance), then their Laplacian spectra converge to the Laplacian spectrum of $G$ in the Hausdorff distance. We apply the previous theory to construct a new and rich class of classifiable $C^{\star}$-algebras. Namely, we show that for any minimal strong almost finite graph $G$ there are naturally associated simple, nuclear, stably finite $C^{\star}$-algebras that are classifiable by their Elliott invariants.

Abstract:A connected undirected graph is called \emph{geodetic} if for every pair of vertices there is a unique shortest path connecting them. It has been conjectured that for finite groups, the only geodetic Cayley graphs which occur are odd cycles and complete graphs. In this article we present a series of theoretical results which contribute to a computer search verifying this conjecture for all groups of size up to 1024. The conjecture is also verified theoretically for several infinite families of groups including dihedral and some families of nilpotent groups. Two key results which enable the computer search to reach as far as it does are: if the center of a group has even order, then the conjecture holds (this eliminates all 2-groups from our computer search); if a Cayley graph is geodetic then there are bounds relating the size of the group, generating set and center (which cuts down the number of generating sets which must be searched significantly).

Abstract:We prove that two natural Markov chains on the set of monotone paths in a strip mix slowly. To do so, we make novel use of the theory of non-positively curved (CAT(0)) cubical complexes to detect small bottlenecks in many graphs of combinatorial interest. Along the way, we give a formula for the number c_m(n) of monotone paths of length n in a strip of height m. In particular we compute the exponential growth constant of c_m(n) for arbitrary m, generalizing results of Williams for m=2, 3.

Positive Harmonic Functions on Graphs with Nilpotent Group Actions

Abstract:We study directed weighted graphs which are invariant under a nilpotent and cocompact group action. In particular, we consider the conic section K of the set of positive harmonic functions. We characterise the set of extreme points of the convex and compact set K as the set of multiplicative elements in K. Moreover, we study positive generalised eigenfunctions for a given parameter $\lambda$. We find that the topological space $M_\lambda$ of multiplicative $\lambda$-harmonic functions is homeomorphic to a sphere for $\lambda$ below a certain threshold.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate properties of the Artin monoid Cayley graph. This is the Cayley graph of an Artin group $A_\Gamma$ with respect to the (infinite) generating set given by the associated Artin monoid $A^+_\Gamma$. In a previous paper, the first three authors introduced a monoid Deligne complex and showed that this complex is contractible for all Artin groups. In this paper, we show that the Artin monoid Cayley graph is quasi-isometric to a modification of the Deligne complex for $A_\Gamma$ obtained by coning off translates of the monoid Deligne complex. We then address the question of when the monoid Cayley graph has infinite diameter. We conjecture that this holds for all Artin groups of infinite type. We give a set of criteria that imply infinite diameter, and using existing solutions to the word problem for large-type Artin groups and 3-free Artin groups, we prove that the conjecture holds for any Artin group containing a 3-generator subgroup of one of these two types.

Abstract:We establish vanishing results for limits of characters in various discrete groups, most notably irreducible lattices in higher rank semisimple Lie groups. As an application, we show that any sequence of finite-dimensional representations converges to the regular representation in the Fell topology. We achieve this by studying the geometry of the simplex of traces of discrete groups having Kazhdan's property (T) or its relative generalizations.

Coloring minimal Cayley graphs

Abstract:We show that any minimal Cayley graph of a (finitely generated) generalized dihedral or nilpotent group has chromatic number at most 3, while 4 colors are sometimes necessary for soluble groups. On the other hand we construct graphs of unbounded chromatic number that admit a proper edge coloring such that each cycle has some color at least twice. The latter disproves a conjecture of Babai'78 that would have implied that all minimal Cayley graphs have bounded chromatic number -- a problem that remains open.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a notion of Poincaré exponent for isometric representations of discrete groups on Hilbert spaces. Similarly as growth exponents control the geometry this exponent is shown to control the size of spectral gaps. Following similar ideas as Patterson and Sullivan it is used in the case of negatively curved groups to construct weakly contained boundary representations reflecting the spectral properties of the original representation analogously as complementary series representations in the case of semi-simple Lie groups. This is exploited to deduced sharp estimates on spectral invariants. A quantitive property (T) á la Cowling is also established proving uniform bound on the mixing rate of representations of hyperbolic groups with property (T). Along the way some properties of boundary representations are discussed. A original characterisation of the positivity of the so-called Knapp-Stein operators and certain fusion rules on the boundary complementary series representations are established.

Compact monotone tall complexity one $T$-spaces

Abstract:In this paper we study compact monotone tall complexity one $T$-spaces. We use the classification of Karshon and Tolman, and the monotone condition, to prove that any two such spaces are isomorphic if and only if they have equal Duistermaat-Heckman measures. Moreover, we show that the moment polytope is Delzant and reflexive, and provide a complete description of the possible Duistermaat-Heckman measures. Whence we obtain a finiteness result that is analogous to that for compact monotone symplectic toric manifolds. Furthermore, we show that any such $T$-action can be extended to a toric $(T \times S^1)$-action. Motivated by a conjecture of Fine and Panov, we prove that any compact monotone tall complexity one $T$-space is equivariantly symplectomorphic to a Fano manifold endowed with a suitable symplectic form and a complexity one $T$-action.

Abstract:Recent investigations on the catenary degrees of numerical monoids have demonstrated that this invariant is a powerful tool in understanding the factorization theory of this class of monoids. Although useful, the catenary degree is largely not sensitive to the lengths of factorizations of an element. In this paper, we study the monotone catenary degree of numerical monoids, which is a variant of catenary degree that requires chains run through factorization lengths monotonically. In general, the monotone catenary is greater than or equal to the catenary degree. We begin by providing an important class of monoids (arithmetical numerical monoids) for which monotone catenary degree is equal to the catenary degree. Conversely, we provide several classes of embedding dimension 3 numerical monoids where monotone catenary degree is strictly greater. We conclude by showing that this difference can grow arbitrarily large.

Abstract:An infinite graph G is minor excluded if there is a finite graph that is not a minor of G. We prove that minor excluded graphs have finite Assouad-Nagata dimension and study minor exclusion for Cayley graphs of finitely generated groups. Our main results and observations are: (1) minor exclusion is not a group property: it depends on the choice of generating set; (2) a group with one end has a generating set for which the Cayley graph is not minor excluded; (3) there are groups that are not minor excluded for any set of generators; (4) minor exclusion is preserved under free products; and (5) virtually free groups are minor excluded for any choice of finite generating set.

Abstract:This document contains supplementary material for the main articles in our Random Cayley Graphs project. We prove refined results about simple random walks on the integers and on the cycle. We are primarily interested in the entropy of these random walks at certain times and how this entropy changes when the time changes slightly. Additionally, we prove some large deviation and exit time estimates. We prove some results on the size of discrete lattice balls and how this size changes when the radius changes slightly. We do this in a general $L_q$ norm, with $q \in [1,\infty]$. We also prove some other technical results deferred from the main papers. We hope that some of the results, particularly the simple random walk estimates, will be useful in their own right for other researchers.
