Abstract:In this paper, we study the trajectory optimization of a cellular-connected unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) which aims to sense the location of a target while maintaining satisfactory communication quality with the ground base stations (GBSs). In contrast to most existing works which assumed the target's location is known, we focus on a more challenging scenario where the exact location of the target to be sensed is unknown and random, while its distribution is known a priori and stored in a novel target location distribution map. Based on this map, the probability for the UAV to successfully sense the target can be expressed as a function of the UAV's trajectory. We aim to optimize the UAV's trajectory between two pre-determined locations to maximize the overall sensing probability during its flight, subject to a GBS-UAV communication quality constraint at each time instant and a maximum mission completion time constraint. Despite the non-convexity and NP-hardness of this problem, we devise three high-quality suboptimal solutions tailored for it with polynomial complexity. Numerical results show that our proposed designs outperform various benchmark schemes.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper mainly explores the trajectory optimization problem of using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for sensing missions in unknown and random target location scenarios. Unlike most work assuming that the target location is known, the paper focuses on a more challenging scenario where the specific location of the target is unknown, but its probability distribution of occurrence is known in advance based on previous data or motion patterns and stored in a target location distribution map. The author proposes a new target location distribution map to represent and store the probability of target occurrence in the geographic area, which allows the UAV to optimize its trajectory based on the probabilities near the flight path, prioritizing flying near high probability target locations. The objective of the study is to design UAV trajectories from the starting point to the destination, maximizing the overall sensing success probability during the flight process, while satisfying communication quality constraints with a ground base station (GBS) and a maximum task completion time limit. Due to the non-convexity and NP-hardness of the problem, the paper presents three suboptimal solutions with polynomial complexity. Numerical results show that the proposed solutions outperform the benchmark strategy in terms of sensing performance. In summary, this paper attempts to address how to optimize the flight trajectory of UAVs to improve the sensing success rate, while ensuring communication quality with a ground base station and task completion time in situations where the target location information is uncertain.
