Abstract:In this note we study numerically the combinatorics of curves and geodesics on the torus with one boundary component. A potential computational difficulty is avoided by counting inside specific orbits of the mapping class group up to a certain length, either geometric or combinatorial. Some cases are rigurolosly determined and the Euler totient function emerges. More complicated orbits are computed to suggest an array of formulae continuing to involve the Euler totient function. We formulate six precise conjectures. These include a novel study of an "inverse" function of the Mirzakhani's asymptotics. The geometric part of our study was motivated by the rationality aspect of these asymptotics.

Twist numbers on hyperbolic once-punctured tori

Abstract:On a hyperbolic surface homeomorphic to a torus with a puncture, each oriented simple geodesic inherits a well-defined relative twist number in $[0,1]$, given by the ratio to its hyperbolic length of the hyperbolic distance between the orthogonal projections of the cusp (or boundary) on its left and right, respectively. With the Markov Uniqueness Conjecture in mind, the twist numbers for simple geodesics on the modular torus $\mathcal{X}$ are of particular interest. Up to isometries of $\mathcal{X}$, simple geodesics are parameterized naturally by $\mathbb{Q}\cap[0,1]$, and the relative twist number yields a map $\tau_{\mathcal{X}}:\mathbb{Q}\cap [0,1] \to [0,1]$. We use hyperbolic geometry and the Farey graph to show that the graph of $\tau_{\mathcal{X}}$ is dense in $[0,1]\times [0,1]$, and the same conclusion holds for any complete hyperbolic structure $\mathcal{Y}$ on the punctured torus. It follows that the twist number of a simple closed curve on the punctured torus does not extend continuously to the space of measured laminations. We also include some explicit calculations of geometric quantities associated to Markov triples, and the curious fact that $\tau_{\mathcal{X}}$ is never equal to zero.

Abstract:Interpreting tangency as a limit of two transverse intersections, we obtain a concrete formula to enumerate smooth degree d plane curves tangent to a given line at multiple points with arbitrary order of tangency. One nodal curves with multiple tangencies of any order are enumerated. Also, one cuspidal curves, that are tangent to first order to a given line at multiple points, are enumerated. We also present a new way to enumerate curves with one node; it is interpreted as a degeneration of a curve tangent to a given line. That method is extended to enumerate curves with two nodes, and also curves with one tacnode are enumerated. In the final part of the paper, it is shown how this idea can be applied in the setting of stable maps and perform a concrete computation to enumerate rational curves with first order tangency. A large number of low degree cases have been worked out explicitly.

Abstract:We study possible tangles that can occur in singularities of solutions to plane Curve Shortening Flow. We exhibit solutions in which more complicated tangles with more than one self-intersection disappear into a singular point. It seems that there are many examples of this kind and that a complete classification presents a problem similar to the problem of classifying all knots in $\mathbb R^3$. As a particular example, we introduce the so-called $n$-loop curves, which generalize Matt Grayson's Figure-Eight curve, and we conjecture a generalization of the Coiculescu-Schwarz asymptotic bow-tie result, namely, a vanishing $n$-loop, when rescaled anisotropically to fit a square bounding box, converges to a "squeezed bow-tie," i.e. the curve $\{(x, y) : |x|\leq 1, y=\pm x^{n-1}\}\cup\{(\pm 1, y) : |y|\leq 1\}$. As evidence in support of the conjecture, we provide a formal asymptotic analysis on one hand, and a numerical simulation for the cases $n=3$ and $n=4$ on the other.

Cotorsion Pairs in the Cluster Category of a Marked Surface

Abstract:We study extension spaces, cotorsion pairs and their mutations in the cluster category of a marked surface without punctures. Under the one-to-one correspondence between the curves, valued closed curves in the marked surface and the indecomposable objects in the associated cluster category, we prove that the dimension of extension space of two indecomposable objects in the cluster categories equals to the intersection number of the corresponding curves. By using this result, we prove that there are no non-trivial $t-$structures in the cluster categories when the surface is connected. Based on this result, we give a classification of cotorsion pairs in these categories. Moreover we define the notion of paintings of a marked surface without punctures and their rotations. They are a geometric model of cotorsion pairs and of their mutations respectively.

Abstract:For any $d\geq 1$, we obtain counting and equidistribution results for tori with small volume for a class of $d$-dimensional torus packings, invariant under a self-joining $\Gamma_\rho<\prod_{i=1}^d\mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{C})$ of a Kleinian group $\Gamma$ formed by a $d$-tuple of convex cocompact representations $\rho=(\rho_1, \cdots, \rho_d)$. More precisely, if $\mathcal P$ is a $\Gamma_\rho$-admissible $d$-dimensional torus packing, then for any bounded subset $E\subset \mathbb{C}^d$ with $\partial E$ contained in a proper real algebraic subvariety, we have $$\lim_{s\to 0} { s^{\delta_{L^1}({\rho}) }} \cdot \#\{T\in \mathcal{P}: \mathrm{Vol} (T)> s,\, T\cap E\neq \emptyset \}= c_{\mathcal P}\cdot \omega_{\rho} (E\cap \Lambda_\rho).$$ Here $0<\delta_{L^1}(\rho)\le 2/\sqrt d$ is the critical exponent of $\Gamma_\rho$ with respect to the $L^1$-metric on the product $\prod_{i=1}^d \mathbb{H}^3$, $\Lambda_\rho\subset (\mathbb{C}\cup\{\infty\})^d$ is the limit set of $\Gamma_\rho$, and $\omega_{\rho}$ is a locally finite Borel measure on $\mathbb{C}^d\cap \Lambda_\rho$ which can be explicitly described. The class of admissible torus packings we consider arises naturally from the Teichmüller theory of Kleinian groups. Our work extends previous results of Oh-Shah on circle packings (i.e. one-dimensional torus packings) to $d$-torus packings.

Dynamics on the SU(2,1)-character variety of the one-holed torus

Abstract:We study the relative SU(2,1)-character varieties of the one-holed torus, and the action of the mapping class group on them. We use an explicit description of the character variety of the free group of rank two in SU(2,1) in terms of traces, which allow us to describe the topology of the character variety. We then combine this description with a generalization of the Farey graph adapted to this new combinatorial setting, using ideas introduced by Bowditch. Using these tools, we can describe an open domain of discontinuity for the action of the mapping class group which strictly contains the set of convex-cocompact characters, and we give several characterizations of representations in this domain.

Abstract:We study earthquake deformations on Teichmüller space associated with simple closed curves of the once-punctured torus. We describe two methods to get an explicit form of the earthquake deformation for any simple closed curve. The first method is rooted in linear recurrence relations, the second in hyperbolic geometry. The two methods align, providing both an algebraic and geometric interpretation of the earthquake deformations. We convert the expressions to other coordinate systems for Teichmüller space to examine earthquake deformations further. Two families of curves are used as examples. Examining the limiting behavior of each gives insight into earthquakes about measured geodesic laminations, of which simple closed curves are a special case.

Abstract:AbstractThis paper presents a new algorithm for torus/torus intersection. The pre-image of the intersection in the parametric space of one torus is represented by an implicit equation. The pre-image is divided into one-valued function curve segments by characteristic points. The topological feature of these characteristic points is analyzed to obtain the structure of the pre-image. Intersection curves satisfying required precision are found by a self-adaptive refinement method. Experiment results are presented to illustrate the stability and efficiency of the method.
Torus knots and generalized Schröder paths

Abstract:We relate invariants of torus knots to the counts of a class of lattice paths, which we call generalized Schröder paths. We determine generating functions of such paths, located in a region determined by a type of a torus knot under consideration, and show that they encode colored HOMFLY-PT polynomials of this knot. The generators of uncolored HOMFLY-PT homology correspond to a basic set of such paths. Invoking the knots-quivers correspondence, we express generating functions of such paths as quiver generating series, and also relate them to quadruply-graded knot homology. Furthermore, we determine corresponding A-polynomials, which provide algebraic equations and recursion relations for generating functions of generalized Schröder paths. The lattice paths of our interest explicitly enumerate BPS states associated to knots via brane constructions.

Minimal asymptotic translation lengths on curve complexes and homology of mapping tori

Abstract:Let $S_g$ be a closed orientable surface of genus $g > 1$. Consider the minimal asymptotic translation length $L_{\mathcal{T}}(k, g)$ on the Teichmüller space of $S_g$, among pseudo-Anosov mapping classes of $S_g$ acting trivially on a $k$-dimensional subspace of $H_1(S_g)$, $0 \le k \le 2g$. The asymptotics of $L_{\mathcal{T}}(k, g)$ for extreme cases $k = 0, 2g$ have been shown by several authors. Jordan Ellenberg asked whether there is a lower bound for $L_{\mathcal{T}}(k, g)$ interpolating the known results on $L_{\mathcal{T}}(0, g)$ and $L_{\mathcal{T}}(2g, g)$, which was affirmatively answered by Agol, Leininger, and Margalit. In this paper, we study an analogue of Ellenberg's question, replacing Teichmüller spaces with curve complexes. We provide lower and upper bound on the minimal asymptotic translation length $L_{\mathcal{C}}(k, g)$ on the curve complex, whose lower bound interpolates the known results on $L_{\mathcal{C}}(0, g)$ and $L_{\mathcal{C}}(2g, g)$. Finally, for each $g$, we construct a non-Torelli pseudo-Anosov $f_g \in \operatorname{Mod}(S_g)$ which does not normally generates $\operatorname{Mod}(S_g)$ and so that the asymptotic translation length of $f_g$ on curve complexes decays more quickly than a constant multiple of $1/g$ as $g \to \infty$. From this, we provide a restriction on how small the asymptotic translation lengths on curve complexes should be if the similar phenomenon as in the work of Lanier and Margalit on Teichmüller spaces holds for curve complexes.

Abstract:This paper investigates circle patterns with obtuse exterior intersection angles on surfaces of finite topological type. We characterise the images of the curvature maps and establish several equivalent conditions regarding long time behaviors of Chow-Luo's combinatorial Ricci flows for these patterns. As consequences, several generalizations of circle pattern theorem are obtained. Moreover, our approach suggests a computational method to find the desired circle patterns.

Unknotted Curves on Seifert Surfaces

Abstract:We consider homologically essential simple closed curves on Seifert surfaces of genus one knots in $S^3$, and in particular those that are unknotted or slice in $S^3$. We completely characterize all such curves for most twist knots: they are either positive or negative braid closures; moreover, we determine exactly which of those are unknotted. A surprising consequence of our work is that the figure eight knot admits infinitely many unknotted essential curves up to isotopy on its genus one Seifert surface, and those curves are enumerated by Fibonacci numbers. On the other hand, we prove that many twist knots admit homologically essential curves that cannot be positive or negative braid closures. Indeed, among those curves, we exhibit an example of a slice but not unknotted homologically essential simple closed curve. We further investigate our study of unknotted essential curves for arbitrary Whitehead doubles of non-trivial knots, and obtain that there is a precisely one unknotted essential simple closed curve in the interior of the doubles' standard genus one Seifert surface. As a consequence of all these we obtain many new examples of 3-manifolds that bound contractible 4-manifolds.

Solutions to ${\rm SU}(n+1)$ Toda system with cone singularities via toric curves on compact Riemann surfaces

Abstract:On a compact Riemann surface (X) with finite punctures (P_1, \ldots, P_k), we define toric curves as multi-valued, totally unramified holomorphic maps to (\mathbb{P}^n) with monodromy in a maximal torus of ({\rm PSU}(n+1)). \textit{Toric solutions} for the ({\rm SU}(n+1)) system on $X\setminus\{P_1,\ldots, P_k\}$ are recognized by their associated {\it toric} curves in (\mathbb{P}^n). We introduce a character n-ensemble as an (n)-tuple of meromorphic one-forms with simple poles and purely imaginary periods, generating toric curves on (X) minus finitely many points. We establish on $X$ a correspondence between character $n$-ensembles and toric solutions to the ({\rm SU}(n+1)) system with finitely many cone singularities. Our approach not only broadens seminal solutions for up to two cone singularities on the Riemann sphere, as classified by Jost-Wang (Int. Math. Res. Not., (6):277-290, 2002) and Lin-Wei-Ye (Invent. Math., 190(1):169-207, 2012), but also advances beyond the limits of Lin-Yang-Zhong's existence theorems (J. Differential Geom., 114(2):337-391, 2020) by introducing a new solution class.

Universal piecewise polynomiality for counting curves in toric surfaces

Abstract:Inspired by piecewise polynomiality results of double Hurwitz numbers, Ardila and Brugallé introduced an enumerative problem which they call double Gromov--Witten invariants of Hirzebruch surfaces. These invariants serve as a two-dimensional analogue and satisfy a similar piecewise polynomial structure. More precisely, they introduced the enumeration of curves in Hirzebruch surfaces satisfying point conditions and tangency conditions on the two parallel toric boundaries. These conditions are stored in four partitions and the resulting invariants are piecewise polynomial in their entries. Moreover, they found that these expressions also behave polynomially with respect to the parameter determining the underlying Hirzebruch surfaces. Based on work of Ardila and Block, they proposed that such a polynomiality could also hold while changing between more general toric surfaces corresponding to $h$-transverse polygons. In this work, we answer this question affirmatively. Moreover, we express the resulting invariants for $h$-transverse polygons as matrix elements in the two-dimensional bosonic Fock space.

Abstract:This survey may be seen as an introduction to the use of toric and tropical geometry in the analysis of plane curve singularities, which are germs $(C,o)$ of complex analytic curves contained in a smooth complex analytic surface $S$. The embedded topological type of such a pair $(S, C)$ is usually defined to be that of the oriented link obtained by intersecting $C$ with a sufficiently small oriented Euclidean sphere centered at the point $o$, defined once a system of local coordinates $(x,y)$ was chosen on the germ $(S,o)$. If one works more generally over an arbitrary algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, one speaks instead of the combinatorial type of $(S, C)$. One may define it by looking either at the Newton-Puiseux series associated to $C$ relative to a generic local coordinate system $(x,y)$, or at the set of infinitely near points which have to be blown up in order to get the minimal embedded resolution of the germ $(C,o)$ or, thirdly, at the preimage of this germ by the resolution. Each point of view leads to a different encoding of the combinatorial type by a decorated tree: an Eggers-Wall tree, an Enriques diagram, or a weighted dual graph. The three trees contain the same information, which in the complex setting is equivalent to the knowledge of the embedded topological type. There are known algorithms for transforming one tree into another. In this paper we explain how a special type of two-dimensional simplicial complex called a lotus allows to think geometrically about the relations between the three types of trees. Namely, all of them embed in a natural lotus, their numerical decorations appearing as invariants of it. This lotus is constructed from the finite set of Newton polygons created during any process of resolution of $(C,o)$ by successive toric modifications.

Abstract:This paper provides a complete classification of torus-invariant curves in Cherkis bow varieties of type A. We develop combinatorial codes for compact and noncompact invariant curves involving the butterfly diagrams, Young diagrams, and binary contingency tables. As a key intermediate step, we also develop a novel tangent weight formula. Finally, we apply this new machinery to example bow varieties to demonstrate how to obtain their 1-skeletons (union of fixed points and invariant curves).

Abstract:Let $S$ be a boundaryless infinite-type surface with finitely many ends and consider an end-periodic homeomorphism $f$ of S. The end-periodicity of $f$ ensures that $M_f$, its associated mapping torus, has a compactification as a $3$-manifold with boundary; further, if $f$ is atoroidal, then $M_f$ admits a hyperbolic metric. Such maps admit invariant \emph{positive and negative Handel-Miller laminations}, $\Lambda^+$, $\Lambda^-$, whose leaves naturally project to the arc and curve complex of a given compact subsurface $Y\subset S$. As an end-periodic analogy to work of Minsky in the finite-type setting, we show that for every $\epsilon>0$ there exists $K> 0$ (depending only on $\epsilon$ and the \emph{capacity} of $f$) for which $d_Y (\Lambda^+, \Lambda^-)\geq K$ implies $\inf_{\sigma\in \text{AH}(M_f)}\{\ell_\sigma(\partial Y)\} \leq \epsilon$. Here $\ell_\sigma (\partial Y)$ denotes the total geodesic length of $\partial Y$ in $(M_f, \sigma)$, and the infimum is taken over all hyperbolic structures on $M_f$. This work produces the following: given a closed surface $\Sigma$, we provide a family of closed, fibered hyperbolic manifolds in which $\Sigma$ is totally geodesically embedded, (almost) transverse to the pseudo-Anosov flow, with arbitrarily small systole.

Abstract:We introduce a semi-algebraic structure on the set  of all isotopy classes of non-separating simple closed curves in any compact oriented surface and show that the structure is finitely generated. As a consequence, we produce a natural finite dimensional linear representation of the mapping class group of the surface. Applications to the Teichmüller space, Thurston's measured lamination space, the harmonic Beltrami differentials, and the first cohomology groups of the surface are discussed.
