Abstract:We use the string diagram calculus to give graphical proofs of the basic results of Etingof, Nikshych and Ostrik on fusion categories. These results include: the quadruple dual is canonically isomorphic to the identity, positivity of the paired dimensions, and Ocneanu rigidity. We introduce the pairing convention as a convenient graphical framework for working with fusion categories. We use this framework to express the pivotal operators as a product of the apex associator monodromy and the pivotal indicators. We also characterize pivotal structures as solutions of an explicit set of algebraic equations over the complex numbers.

Symmetries of the cyclic nerve

Abstract:We undertake a systematic study of the Hochschild homology, i.e. (the geometric realization of) the cyclic nerve, of $(\infty,1)$-categories (and more generally of category-objects in an $\infty$-category), as a version of factorization homology. In order to do this, we codify $(\infty,1)$-categories in terms of quiver representations in them. By examining a universal instance of such Hochschild homology, we explicitly identify its natural symmetries, and construct a non-stable version of the cyclotomic trace map. Along the way we give a unified account of the cyclic, paracyclic, and epicyclic categories. We also prove that this gives a combinatorial description of the $n=1$ case of factorization homology as presented in [AFR18], which parametrizes $(\infty,1)$-categories by solidly 1-framed stratified spaces.

Model structures for diagrammatic $(\infty, n)$-categories

Abstract:Diagrammatic sets admit a notion of internal equivalence in the sense of coinductive weak invertibility, with similar properties to its analogue in strict $\omega$-categories. We construct a model structure whose fibrant objects are diagrammatic sets in which every round pasting diagram is equivalent to a single cell -- its weak composite -- and propose them as a model of $(\infty, \infty)$-categories. For each $n < \infty$, we then construct a model structure whose fibrant objects are those $(\infty, \infty)$-categories whose cells in dimension $> n$ are all weakly invertible. We show that weak equivalences between fibrant objects are precisely morphisms that are essentially surjective on cells of all dimensions. On the way to this result, we also construct model structures for $(\infty, n)$-categories on marked diagrammatic sets, which split into a coinductive and an inductive case when $n = \infty$, and prove that they are Quillen equivalent to the unmarked model structures when $n < \infty$ and in the coinductive case of $n = \infty$. Finally, we prove that the $(\infty, 0)$-model structure is Quillen equivalent to the classical model structure on simplicial sets. This establishes the first proof of the homotopy hypothesis for a model of $\infty$-groupoids defined as $(\infty, \infty)$-categories whose cells in dimension $> 0$ are all weakly invertible.

Non-tautological cycles on moduli spaces of smooth pointed curves

Abstract:In recent work by Arena, Canning, Clader, Haburcak, Li, Mok, and Tamborini it was proven that for infinitely many values of $g$ and $n$, there exist non-tautological algebraic cohomology classes on the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ of smooth genus $g$, $n$-pointed curves. Here we show how a generalization of their technique allows to cover most of the remaining cases, proving the existence of non-tautological algebraic cohomology classes on the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ for all but finitely many values of $g$ and $n$.

Diagramatics of $A_1 \times A_1$ Folded Soergel Bimodules

Abstract:There is an action of $\mathbb{Z}/2$ on the category of Soergel Bimodules of type $A_1 \times A_1$ induced by the nontrivial automorphism of its Dynkin diagram. We give an isotopy presentation by local generators and relations of the equivariantization of the category of Soergel Bimodules of type $A_1 \times A_1$ under this action. This is the first step in a program to describe and study the categories of equivariant Soergel Bimodules.

Abstract:We compute the fusion rule of a one-parameter family of spherical categories constructed by one author from the classification of singly generated Yang–Baxter planar algebras. The structure constant of the fusion rule is expressed in a closed-form formula of Littlewood–Richardson coefficients. We also compute the characters of the simple objects and their generating function in terms of symmetric functions with infinite variables.

Abstract:Lifts of categorical diagrams $D\colon\mathsf{J}\to\mathsf{X}$ against discrete opfibrations $\pi\colon\mathsf{E}\to\mathsf{X}$ can be interpreted as presenting solutions to systems of equations. With this interpretation in mind, it is natural to ask if there is a notion of equivalence of diagrams $D\simeq D'$ that precisely captures the idea of the two diagrams "having the same solutions''. We give such a definition, and then show how the localisation of the category of diagrams in $\mathsf{X}$ along such equivalences is isomorphic to the localisation of the slice category $\mathsf{Cat}/\mathsf{X}$ along the class of initial functors. Finally, we extend this result to the 2-categorical setting, proving the analogous statement for any locally presentable 2-category in place of $\mathsf{Cat}$.

Abstract:Diagrammatic sets are presheaves on a rich category of shapes, whose definition is motivated by combinatorial topology and higher-dimensional diagram rewriting. These shapes include representatives of oriented simplices, cubes, and positive opetopes, and are stable under operations including Gray products, joins, suspensions, and duals. We exhibit a cofibrantly generated model structure on diagrammatic sets, as well as two separate Quillen equivalences with the classical model structure on simplicial sets. We construct explicit sets of generating cofibrations and acyclic cofibrations, and prove that the model structure is monoidal with the Gray product of diagrammatic sets.

Combinatorics of higher-categorical diagrams

Abstract:This is a book on higher-categorical diagrams, including pasting diagrams. It aims to provide a thorough and modern reference on the subject, collecting, revisiting and expanding results scattered across the literature, informed by recent advances and practical experience with higher-dimensional diagram rewriting. We approach the subject as a kind of directed combinatorial topology: a diagram is a map from a "directed cell complex", encoded combinatorially as a face poset together with orientation data. Unlike previous expositions, we adopt from the beginning a functorial viewpoint, focussing on morphisms and categorical constructions. We do not tie ourselves to a specific model of higher categories, and instead treat diagrams as independent combinatorial structures that admit functorial interpretations in various contexts. Topics covered include the theory of layerings of diagrams; acyclicity properties and their consequences; constructions including Gray products, suspensions, and joins; special shapes such as globes, oriented simplices, cubes, and positive opetopes; the interpretation of diagrams in strict omega-categories and their geometric realisation as simplicial and CW complexes; and Steiner's theory of directed chain complexes.

Entropy, cocycles, and their diagrammatics

Abstract:The first part of the paper explains how to encode a one-cocycle and a two-cocycle on a group $G$ with values in its representation by networks of planar trivalent graphs with edges labelled by elements of $G$, elements of the representation floating in the regions, and suitable rules for manipulation of these diagrams. When the group is a semidirect product, there is a similar presentation via overlapping networks for the two subgroups involved. M. Kontsevich and J.-L. Cathelineau have shown how to interpret the entropy of a finite random variable and infinitesimal dilogarithms, including their four-term functional relations, via 2-cocycles on the group of affine symmetries of a line. We convert their construction into a diagrammatical calculus evaluating planar networks that describe morphisms in suitable monoidal categories. In particular, the four-term relations become equalities of networks analogous to associativity equations. The resulting monoidal categories complement existing categorical and operadic approaches to entropy.

Abstract:Given a diagram of small categories $F : J \rightarrow \textbf{Cat}$, we provide a combinatorial description of its colimit in terms of the indexing category $J$ and the categories and functors in the diagram $F$. We introduce certain double categories of zig-zags in order to keep track of the necessary identifications. We found these double categories necessary, but also explanatory. When applied pointwise in the simplicially enriched setting, our constructions offer a shorter proof of the necklace theorem of Dugger and Spivak by direct computation.

Abstract:Let C be an (n+2)-angulated category with an n-suspension functor Σn and X be a cluster-tilting subcategory of C. Then we show that the quotient category C/X is an n-abelian category, and C/X is equivalent to an n-cluster tilting subcategory of an abelian category mod(Σ−nX). In addition, if C has a Serre functor, we also prove that mod(Σ−nX) is Gorenstein of Gorenstein dimension at most n. As an application, we generalize recent results of Jacobsen-Jørgensen and Koenig-Zhu.
Affine and cyclotomic Schur categories

Abstract:Using the affine web category introduced in a prequel as a building block, we formulate a diagrammatic $\Bbbk$-linear monoidal category, the affine Schur category, for any commutative ring $\Bbbk$. We then formulate diagrammatic categories, the cyclotomic Schur categories, with arbitrary parameters at positive integral levels. Integral bases consisting of elementary diagrams are obtained for affine and cyclotomic Schur categories. A second diagrammatic basis, called a double SST basis, for any such cyclotomic Schur category is also established, leading to a conjectural higher level RSK correspondence. We show that the endomorphism algebras with the double SST bases are isomorphic to degenerate cyclotomic Schur algebras with their cellular bases, providing a first diagrammatic presentation of the latter. The presentations for the affine and cyclotomic Schur categories are much simplified when $\Bbbk$ is a field of characteristic zero.

Abstract:This expository article explains how planar diagrammatics naturally arise in the study of categorified quantum groups with a focus on the categorification of quantum sl2. We derive the definition of categorified quantum sl2 and highlight some of the new structure that arises in categorified quantum groups. The expert will find a discussion of rescalling isomorphisms for categorified quantum sl2, a proof that cyclotomic quotients of the nilHecke algebra are isomorphic to matrix rings over the cohomology ring of Grassmannians, and an interpretation of `fake bubbles' using symmetric functions.

Manifold Diagrams for Higher Categories

Abstract:We develop a graphical calculus of manifold diagrams which generalises string and surface diagrams to arbitrary dimensions. Manifold diagrams are pasting diagrams for $(\infty, n)$-categories that admit a semi-strict composition operation for which associativity and unitality is strict. The weak interchange law satisfied by composition of manifold diagrams is determined geometrically through isotopies of diagrams. By building upon framed combinatorial topology, we can classify critical points in isotopies at which the arrangement of cells changes. This allows us to represent manifold diagrams combinatorially and use them as shapes with which to probe $(\infty, n)$-categories, presented as $n$-fold Segal spaces. Moreover, for any system of labels for the singularities in a manifold diagram, we show how to generate a free $(\infty, n)$-category.

Abstract:In category theory, the use of string diagrams is well known to aid in the intuitive understanding of certain concepts, particularly when dealing with adjunctions and monoidal categories. We show that string diagrams are also useful in exploring fundamental properties of basic concepts in category theory, such as universal properties, (co)limits, Kan extensions, and (co)ends. For instance, string diagrams are utilized to represent visually intuitive proofs of the Yoneda lemma, necessary and sufficient conditions for being adjunctions, the fact that right adjoints preserve limits (RAPL), and necessary and sufficient conditions for having pointwise Kan extensions. We also introduce a method for intuitively calculating (co)ends using diagrammatic representations and employ it to prove several properties of (co)ends and weighted (co)limits. This paper proposes that using string diagrams is an effective approach for beginners in category theory to learn the fundamentals of the subject in an intuitive and understandable way.

Functor String Diagrams: A Novel Approach to Flexible Diagrams for Applied Category Theory

Abstract:The study of abstraction and composition - the focus of category theory - naturally leads to sophisticated diagrams which can encode complex algebraic semantics. Consequently, these diagrams facilitate a clearer visual comprehension of diverse theoretical and applied systems. Complex algebraic structures - otherwise represented by a forest of symbols - can be encoded into diagrams with intuitive graphical rules. The prevailing paradigm for diagrammatic category theory are monoidal string diagrams whose specification reflects the axioms of monoidal categories. However, such diagrams struggle in accurately portraying crucial categorical constructs such as functors or natural transformations, obscuring central concepts such as the Yoneda lemma or the simultaneous consideration of hom-functors and products. In this work, we introduce functor string diagrams, a systematic approach for the development of categorical diagrams which allows functors, natural transformations, and products to be clearly represented. We validate their practicality in multiple dimensions. We show their usefulness for theoretical manipulations by proving the Yoneda lemma, show that they encompass monoidal string diagrams and hence their helpful properties, and end by showing their exceptional applied utility by leveraging them to underpin neural circuit diagrams, a method which, at last, allows deep learning architectures to be comprehensively and rigorously expressed.

As applications, we classify the Hopf subalgebras of a family of semisimple Hopf algebras of Kac-Paljutkin type and recover Naidu-Nikshych-Witherspoon classification of the fusion subcategories of the representation category of a twisted quantum double of a finite group.
