Abstract:This paper studies obstructions to preservation of return sets by episturmian morphisms. We show, by way of an explicit construction, that infinitely many obstructions exist. This generalizes and improves an earlier result about Sturmian morphisms.

Abstract:We discuss applications of exact structures and relative homological algebra to the study of invariants of multiparameter persistence modules. This paper is mostly expository, but does contain a pair of novel results. Over finite posets, classical arguments about the relative projective modules of an exact structure make use of Auslander-Reiten theory. One of our results establishes a new adjunction which allows us to "lift" these arguments to certain infinite posets over which Auslander-Reiten theory is not available. We give several examples of this lifting, in particular highlighting the non-existence and existence of resolutions by upsets when working with finitely presentable representations of the plane and of the closure of the positive quadrant, respectively. We then restrict our attention to finite posets. In this setting, we discuss the relationship between the global dimension of an exact structure and the representation dimension of the incidence algebra of the poset. We conclude with our second novel contribution. This is an explicit description of the irreducible morphisms between relative projective modules for several exact structures which have appeared previously in the literature.

Quasiperiodic and Lyndon episturmian words

Abstract:Recently the second two authors characterized quasiperiodic Sturmian words, proving that a Sturmian word is non-quasiperiodic if and only if it is an infinite Lyndon word. Here we extend this study to episturmian words (a natural generalization of Sturmian words) by describing all the quasiperiods of an episturmian word, which yields a characterization of quasiperiodic episturmian words in terms of their "directive words". Even further, we establish a complete characterization of all episturmian words that are Lyndon words. Our main results show that, unlike the Sturmian case, there is a much wider class of episturmian words that are non-quasiperiodic, besides those that are infinite Lyndon words. Our key tools are morphisms and directive words, in particular "normalized" directive words, which we introduced in an earlier paper. Also of importance is the use of "return words" to characterize quasiperiodic episturmian words, since such a method could be useful in other contexts.

Abstract:An infinite word, which is aperiodic and codes the orbit of a transformation of the exchange of three intervals is called 3iet word. Such a word is thus a natural generalization of a sturmian word to a word over 3-letter alphabet. A morphism is said to be 3iet preserving if it maps any 3iet word to another 3iet word. It is known that the monoid of morphisms preserving sturmian words is finitely generated. On the contrary, in this note we prove that the monoid of 3iet preserving morphisms is not finitely generated, that is, there are infinitely many 3iet preserving morphisms, which cannot be written as a non-trivial decomposition of other 3iet preserving morphisms.
Epimorphisms in varieties of residuated structures

Abstract:It is proved that epimorphisms are surjective in a range of varieties of residuated structures, including all varieties of Heyting or Brouwerian algebras of finite depth, and all varieties consisting of Goedel algebras, relative Stone algebras, Sugihara monoids or positive Sugihara monoids. This establishes the infinite deductive Beth definability property for a corresponding range of substructural logics. On the other hand, it is shown that epimorphisms need not be surjective in a locally finite variety of Heyting or Brouwerian algebras of width 2. It follows that the infinite Beth property is strictly stronger than the so-called finite Beth property, confirming a conjecture of Blok and Hoogland.

Abstract:We investigate several questions related to the notion of recognizable morphism. The main result is a new proof of Mossé's theorem and actually of a generalization to non primitive morphisms due to Berthé et al. We actually prove the result of Berthé et al. for the most general class of morphisms, including ones with erasable letters. It is derived from a result concerning elementary morphisms for which we also provide a new proof. We also show how to decide whether an injective morphism is recognizable on the full shift for aperiodic points.

Abstract:Episturmian morphisms constitute a powerful tool to study episturmian words. Indeed, any episturmian word can be infinitely decomposed over the set of pure episturmian morphisms. Thus, an episturmian word can be defined by one of its morphic decompositions or, equivalently, by a certain directive word. Here we characterize pairs of words directing a common episturmian word. We also propose a way to uniquely define any episturmian word through a normalization of its directive words. As a consequence of these results, we characterize episturmian words having a unique directive word.

Obstructions to almost complex structures following Massey

Abstract:We provide proofs of two theorems stated by Massey in 1961, concerning the obstructions to finding complex structures on real vector bundles. In addition, we determine the second obstruction to a complex structure on a rank six orientable real vector bundle. The obstructions are fractional parts of integral Stiefel-Whitney classes, and a fourth of an appropriate combination of Pontryagin, Chern, and Euler classes.

Preservation theorems on sparse classes revisited

Abstract:We revisit the work studying homomorphism preservation for first-order logic in sparse classes of structures initiated in [Atserias et al., JACM 2006] and [Dawar, JCSS 2010]. These established that first-order logic has the homomorphism preservation property in any sparse class that is monotone and addable. It turns out that the assumption of addability is not strong enough for the proofs given. We demonstrate this by constructing classes of graphs of bounded treewidth which are monotone and addable but fail to have homomorphism preservation. We also show that homomorphism preservation fails on the class of planar graphs. On the other hand, the proofs of homomorphism preservation can be recovered by replacing addability by a stronger condition of amalgamation over bottlenecks. This is analogous to a similar condition formulated for extension preservation in [Atserias et al., SiCOMP 2008].

Reciprocity obstruction to strong approximation over p-adic function fields

Abstract:Over function fields of p-adic curves, we construct stably rational varieties in the form of homogeneous spaces of SL_n with semisimple simply connected stabilizers and we show that strong approximation away from a non-empty set of places fails for such varieties. The construction combines the Lichtenbaum duality and the degree 3 cohomological invariants of the stabilizers. We then establish a reciprocity obstruction which accounts for this failure of strong approximation. We show that this reciprocity obstruction to strong approximation is the only one for counterexamples we constructed, and also for classifying varieties of tori. We also show that this reciprocity obstruction to strong approximation is compatible with known results for tori. At the end, we explain how a similar point of view shows that the reciprocity obstruction to weak approximation is the only one for classifying varieties of tori over p-adic function fields.

Abstract:We propose a generalization of Gysin maps for DM-type morphisms of stacks $F\to G$ that admit a perfect relative obstruction theory $E_{F/G}^{\bullet}$, which we call a "virtual pull-back". We prove functoriality properties of virtual pull-backs. As applications, we analyze Gromov-Witten invariants of blow-ups and projective bundles.

Abstract:The complex projective structures considered is this article are compact curves locally modeled on $\mathbb{CP}^1$. To such a geometric object, modulo marked isomorphism, the monodromy map associates an algebraic one: a representation of its fundamental group into $\operatorname{PGL}(2,\mathbb{C})$, modulo conjugacy. This correspondence is neither surjective nor injective. Nonetheless, it is a local diffeomorphism [Hejhal, 1975]. We generalize this theorem to projective structures admitting poles (without apparent singularity and with fixed residues): the corresponding monodromy map (including Stokes data) is a local biholomorphism.

An obstruction to smoothing stable maps

Abstract:We describe an obstruction to smoothing stable maps in smooth projective varieties, which generalizes some previously known obstructions. Our obstruction comes from the non-existence of certain rational functions on the ghost components, with prescribed simple poles and residues.

Abstract:Preservation theorems provide a direct correspondence between the syntactic structure of first-order sentences and the closure properties of their respective classes of models. A line of work has explored preservation theorems relativised to combinatorially tame classes of sparse structures [Atserias et al., JACM 2006; Atserias et al., SiCOMP 2008; Dawar, JCSS 2010; Dawar and Eleftheriadis, 2024]. In this article we initiate the study of preservation theorems for dense graph classes. In contrast to the sparse setting, we show that extension preservation fails on most natural dense classes of low complexity. Nonetheless, we isolate a technical condition which is sufficient for extension preservation to hold, providing a dense analogue to a result of [Atserias et al., SiCOMP 2008].

Abstract:Suppose one has a map of split short exact sequences in a category of modules, or more generally, in any abelian category. Do the short exact sequences split compatibly, i.e., does there exist a splitting of each short exact sequence which commutes with the map of short exact sequences? The answer is sometimes yes and sometimes no. We define and prove basic properties of an obstruction group to the existence of compatible splittings.

Abstract:We prove an iteration theorem which guarantees for a wide class of nice iterations of $\omega_1$-preserving forcings that $\omega_1$ is not collapse, at the price of needing large cardinals to burn as fuel. More precisely, we show that a nice iteration of $\omega_1$-preserving forcings which force SRP at successor steps and preserves old stationary sets does not collapse $\omega_1$.

Abstract:We develop properties of unramified, étale and smooth morphisms between Berkovich spaces over $\mathbb{Z}$. We prove that they satisfy properties analogous to those of morphisms of schemes and we provide analytification criteria.
