Abstract:Let G be a graph. A set is independent if its elements are pairwise nonadjacent. A vertex is shedding if for every independent set there exists such that is independent. An independent set S is maximal if it is not contained in another independent set. An independent set S is maximum if the size of every independent set of G is not bigger than | S |. The size of a maximum independent set of G is denoted . A graph G is well-covered if all its maximal independent sets are maximum, i.e. the size of every maximal independent set is . The graph G belongs to class if every two disjoint independent sets in G are included in two disjoint maximum independent sets. If a graph belongs to the class , then it is well-covered. Finding a maximum independent set in an input graph is a well-known NP-hard problem. Recognizing well-covered graphs is co-NP-complete. Recently, it was proved that deciding whether an input graph belongs to the class is co-NP-complete. However, when the input is restricted to well-covered graphs, the complexity status of recognizing graphs in is still not known. In this article, we investigate the connection between shedding vertices and graphs. On the one hand, we prove that recognizing shedding vertices is co-NP-complete. On the other hand, we find polynomial solutions for restricted cases of the problem. We also supply polynomial characterizations of several families of graphs.

Abstract:A graph $G$ is well-covered if every minimal vertex cover of $G$ is minimum, and a graph $G$ is well-dominated if every minimal dominating set of $G$ is minimum. Studies on well-covered graphs were initiated in [Plummer, JCT 1970], and well-dominated graphs were first introduced in [Finbow, Hartnell and Nowakow, AC 1988]. Well-dominated graphs are well-covered, and both classes have been widely studied in the literature. The recognition of well-covered graphs was proved coNP-complete by [Chvátal and Slater, AODM 1993] and by [Sankaranarayana and Stewart, Networks 1992], but the complexity of recognizing well-dominated graphs has been left open since their introduction. We close this complexity gap by proving that recognizing well-dominated graphs is coNP-complete. This solves a well-known open question (c.f. [Levit and Tankus, DM 2017] and [Gözüpek, Hujdurovic and Milanič, DMTCS 2017]), which was first asked in [Caro, Sebő and Tarsi, JAlg 1996]. Surprisingly, our proof is quite simple, although it was a long-standing open problem. Finally, we show that recognizing well-totally-dominated graphs is coNP-complete, answering a question of [Bahad\ir, Ekim, and Gözüpek, AMC 2021].

Recognition Complexity of Subgraphs of k-Connected Planar Cubic Graphs

Abstract:We study the recognition complexity of subgraphs of k-connected planar cubic graphs for k = 1, 2, 3. We present polynomial-time algorithms to recognize subgraphs of 1- and 2-connected planar cubic graphs, both in the variable and fixed embedding setting. The main tools involve the Generalized (Anti)factor-problem for the fixed embedding case, and SPQR-trees for the variable embedding case. Secondly, we prove NP-hardness of recognizing subgraphs of 3-connected planar cubic graphs in the variable embedding setting.

Computing Well-Covered Vector Spaces of Graphs using Modular Decomposition

Abstract:A graph is well-covered if all its maximal independent sets have the same cardinality. This well studied concept was introduced by Plummer in 1970 and naturally generalizes to the weighted case. Given a graph $G$, a real-valued vertex weight function $w$ is said to be a well-covered weighting of $G$ if all its maximal independent sets are of the same weight. The set of all well-covered weightings of a graph $G$ forms a vector space over the field of real numbers, called the well-covered vector space of $G$. Since the problem of recognizing well-covered graphs is $\mathsf{co}$-$\mathsf{NP}$-complete, the problem of computing the well-covered vector space of a given graph is $\mathsf{co}$-$\mathsf{NP}$-hard. Levit and Tankus showed in 2015 that the problem admits a polynomial-time algorithm in the class of claw-free graph. In this paper, we give two general reductions for the problem, one based on anti-neighborhoods and one based on modular decomposition, combined with Gaussian elimination. Building on these results, we develop a polynomial-time algorithm for computing the well-covered vector space of a given fork-free graph, generalizing the result of Levit and Tankus. Our approach implies that well-covered fork-free graphs can be recognized in polynomial time and also generalizes some known results on cographs.

Recognition of chordal graphs and cographs which are Cover-Incomparability graphs

Abstract:Cover-Incomparability graphs (C-I graphs) are an interesting class of graphs from posets. A C-I graph is a graph from a poset $P=(V,\le)$ with vertex set $V$, and the edge-set is the union of edge sets of the cover graph and the incomparability graph of the poset. The recognition of the C-I graphs is known to be NP-complete (Maxová et al., Order 26(3), 229--236(2009)). In this paper, we prove that chordal graphs having at most two independent simplicial vertices are exactly the chordal graphs which are also C-I graphs. A similar result is obtained for cographs as well. Using the structural results of these graphs, we derive linear time recognition algorithms for chordal graphs and cographs which are C-I graphs.

Abstract:Once the set of finite graphs is equipped with an algebra structure (arising from the definition of operations that generalize the concatenation of words), one can define the notion of a recognizable set of graphs in terms of finite congruences. Applications to the construction of efficient algorithms and to the theory of context-free sets of graphs follow naturally. The class of recognizable sets depends on the signature of graph operations. We consider three signatures related respectively to Hyperedge Replacement (HR) context-free graph grammars, to Vertex Replacement (VR) context-free graph grammars, and to modular decompositions of graphs. We compare the corresponding classes of recognizable sets. We show that they are robust in the sense that many variants of each signature (where in particular operations are defined by quantifier-free formulas, a quite flexible framework) yield the same notions of recognizability. We prove that for graphs without large complete bipartite subgraphs, HR-recognizability and VR-recognizability coincide. The same combinatorial condition equates HR-context-free and VR-context-free sets of graphs. Inasmuch as possible, results are formulated in the more general framework of relational structures.
Counting Subgraphs in Somewhere Dense Graphs

Abstract:We study the problems of counting copies and induced copies of a small pattern graph $H$ in a large host graph $G$. Recent work fully classified the complexity of those problems according to structural restrictions on the patterns $H$. In this work, we address the more challenging task of analysing the complexity for restricted patterns and restricted hosts. Specifically we ask which families of allowed patterns and hosts imply fixed-parameter tractability, i.e., the existence of an algorithm running in time $f(H)\cdot |G|^{O(1)}$ for some computable function $f$. Our main results present exhaustive and explicit complexity classifications for families that satisfy natural closure properties. Among others, we identify the problems of counting small matchings and independent sets in subgraph-closed graph classes $\mathcal{G}$ as our central objects of study and establish the following crisp dichotomies as consequences of the Exponential Time Hypothesis: (1) Counting $k$-matchings in a graph $G\in\mathcal{G}$ is fixed-parameter tractable if and only if $\mathcal{G}$ is nowhere dense. (2) Counting $k$-independent sets in a graph $G\in\mathcal{G}$ is fixed-parameter tractable if and only if $\mathcal{G}$ is nowhere dense. Moreover, we obtain almost tight conditional lower bounds if $\mathcal{G}$ is somewhere dense, i.e., not nowhere dense. These base cases of our classifications subsume a wide variety of previous results on the matching and independent set problem, such as counting $k$-matchings in bipartite graphs (Curticapean, Marx; FOCS 14), in $F$-colourable graphs (Roth, Wellnitz; SODA 20), and in degenerate graphs (Bressan, Roth; FOCS 21), as well as counting $k$-independent sets in bipartite graphs (Curticapean et al.; Algorithmica 19).

Abstract:Let k ≥ 1 . A graph G is W k if for any k pairwise disjoint independent vertex subsets A 1 , … , A k in G, there exist k pairwise disjoint maximum independent sets S 1 , … , S k in G such that A i ⊆ S i for i ∈ [ k ] . Recognizing W 1 graphs is coNP-hard, as shown by Chvátal and Slater (1993) and, independently, by Sankaranarayana and Stewart (1992). Extending this result and answering a recent question of Levit and Tankus, we show that recognizing W k graphs is coNP-hard for k ≥ 2 . On the positive side, we show that recognizing W k graphs is, for each k ≥ 2 , FPT parameterized by clique-width and by tree-width. Finally, we construct graphs G that are not W 2 such that, for every vertex v in G and every maximal independent set S in G − N [ v ] , the largest independent set in N ( v ) ∖ S consists of a single vertex, thereby refuting a conjecture of Levit and Tankus.

Abstract:The overlap graphs of subtrees in a tree (SOGs) generalise many other graphs classes with set representation characterisations. The complexity of recognising SOGs in open. The complexities of recognising many subclasses of SOGs are known. We consider several subclasses of SOGs by restricting the underlying tree. For a fixed integer $k \geq 3$, we consider: \begin{my_itemize} \item The overlap graphs of subtrees in a tree where that tree has $k$ leaves \item The overlap graphs of subtrees in trees that can be derived from a given input tree by subdivision and have at least 3 leaves \item The overlap and intersection graphs of paths in a tree where that tree has maximum degree $k$ \end{my_itemize} We show that the recognition problems of these classes are NP-complete. For all other parameters we get circle graphs, well known to be polynomially recognizable.

Abstract:In the $K_r$-Cover problem, given a graph $G$ and an integer $k$ one has to decide if there exists a set of at most $k$ vertices whose removal destroys all $r$-cliques of $G$. In this paper we give an algorithm for $K_r$-Cover that runs in subexponential FPT time on graph classes satisfying two simple conditions related to cliques and treewidth. As an application we show that our algorithm solves $K_r$-Cover in time * $2^{O_r\left (k^{(r+1)/(r+2)}\log k \right)} \cdot n^{O_r(1)}$ in pseudo-disk graphs and map-graphs; * $2^{O_{t,r}(k^{2/3}\log k)} \cdot n^{O_r(1)}$ in $K_{t,t}$-subgraph-free string graphs; and * $2^{O_{H,r}(k^{2/3}\log k)} \cdot n^{O_r(1)}$ in $H$-minor-free graphs.

The Complexity of Recognizing Geometric Hypergraphs

Abstract:As set systems, hypergraphs are omnipresent and have various representations ranging from Euler and Venn diagrams to contact representations. In a geometric representation of a hypergraph $H=(V,E)$, each vertex $v\in V$ is associated with a point $p_v\in \mathbb{R}^d$ and each hyperedge $e\in E$ is associated with a connected set $s_e\subset \mathbb{R}^d$ such that $\{p_v\mid v\in V\}\cap s_e=\{p_v\mid v\in e\}$ for all $e\in E$. We say that a given hypergraph $H$ is representable by some (infinite) family $F$ of sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$, if there exist $P\subset \mathbb{R}^d$ and $S \subseteq F$ such that $(P,S)$ is a geometric representation of $H$. For a family F, we define RECOGNITION(F) as the problem to determine if a given hypergraph is representable by F. It is known that the RECOGNITION problem is $\exists\mathbb{R}$-hard for halfspaces in $\mathbb{R}^d$. We study the families of translates of balls and ellipsoids in $\mathbb{R}^d$, as well as of other convex sets, and show that their RECOGNITION problems are also $\exists\mathbb{R}$-complete. This means that these recognition problems are equivalent to deciding whether a multivariate system of polynomial equations with integer coefficients has a real solution.

Strong edge colorings of graphs and the covers of Kneser graphs

Abstract:A proper edge coloring of a graph is strong if it creates no bichromatic path of length three. It is well known that for a strong edge coloring of a $k$-regular graph at least $2k-1$ colors are needed. We show that a $k$-regular graph admits a strong edge coloring with $2k-1$ colors if and only if it covers the Kneser graph $K(2k-1,k-1)$. In particular, a cubic graph is strongly $5$-edge-colorable whenever it covers the Petersen graph. One of the implications of this result is that a conjecture about strong edge colorings of subcubic graphs proposed by Faudree et al. [Ars Combin. 29 B (1990), 205--211] is false.

Abstract:The canonical decomposition of a bipartite graph is a new decomposition method that involves three operators: parallel, series, and K⨁ S . The class of weak-bisplit graphs is the class of totally decomposable graphs with respect to these operators, and the class of bicographs is the class of totally decomposable graphs with respect to parallel and series operators. We prove in this paper that the class of bipartite (P6,C6)-free graphs is the class of bipartite graphs that are totally decomposable with respect to parallel and K⨁S operators. We present a linear time recognition algorithm for (P6,C6)-free graphs that is symmetrical to the linear recognition algorithms of weak-bisplit graphs and star1,2,3-free bipartite graphs. As a result of this algorithm, we present efficient solutions in this class of graphs for two optimization graph problems: the maximum balanced biclique problem and the maximum independent set problem.

Small Even Covers, Locally Decodable Codes and Restricted Subgraphs of Edge-Colored Kikuchi Graphs

Abstract:Given a $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$ on $n$ vertices, an even cover in $H$ is a collection of hyperedges that touch each vertex an even number of times. Even covers are a generalization of cycles in graphs and are equivalent to linearly dependent subsets of a system of linear equations modulo $2$. As a result, they arise naturally in the context of well-studied questions in coding theory and refuting unsatisfiable $k$-SAT formulas. Analogous to the irregular Moore bound of Alon, Hoory, and Linial (2002), in 2008, Feige conjectured an extremal trade-off between the number of hyperedges and the length of the smallest even cover in a $k$-uniform hypergraph. This conjecture was recently settled up to a multiplicative logarithmic factor in the number of hyperedges (Guruswami, Kothari, and 1Manohar 2022 and Hsieh, Kothari, and Mohanty 2023). These works introduce the new technique that relates hypergraph even covers to cycles in the associated \emph{Kikuchi} graphs. Their analysis of these Kikuchi graphs, especially for odd $k$, is rather involved and relies on matrix concentration inequalities.

Koml\'os's tiling theorem via graphon covers

Abstract: Komlos [Komlos: Tiling Turan Theorems, Combinatorica, 2000] determined the asymptotically optimal minimum-degree condition for covering a given proportion of vertices of a host graph by vertex-disjoint copies of a fixed graph H, thus essentially extending the Hajnal-Szemeredi theorem which deals with the case when H is a clique. We give a proof of a graphon version of Komlos's theorem. To prove this graphon version, and also to deduce from it the original statement about finite graphs, we use the machinery introduced in [Hladky, Hu, Piguet: Tilings in graphons, arXiv:1606.03113]. We further prove a stability version of Komlos's theorem.

Abstract:For some given graph H, a graph G is called H-covered if each vertex in G is contained in a copy of H. In this note, we determine the maximum number of independent sets of size t >= 3 in N-vertex K n-covered graphs and classify the extremal graphs. The result answers a question proposed by Chakraborti and Loh. The proof uses an edge-switching operation on hypergraphs which never increases the number of independent sets.
Complexity Framework for Forbidden Subgraphs III: When Problems are Tractable on Subcubic Graphs

Abstract:For any finite set $\mathcal{H} = \{H_1,\ldots,H_p\}$ of graphs, a graph is $\mathcal{H}$-subgraph-free if it does not contain any of $H_1,\ldots,H_p$ as a subgraph. In recent work, meta-classifications have been studied: these show that if graph problems satisfy certain prescribed conditions, their complexity is determined on classes of $\mathcal{H}$-subgraph-free graphs. We continue this work and focus on problems that have polynomial-time solutions on classes that have bounded treewidth or maximum degree at most~$3$ and examine their complexity on $H$-subgraph-free graph classes where $H$ is a connected graph. With this approach, we obtain comprehensive classifications for (Independent) Feedback Vertex Set, Connected Vertex Cover, Colouring and Matching Cut. This resolves a number of open problems. We highlight that, to establish that Independent Feedback Vertex Set belongs to this collection of problems, we first show that it can be solved in polynomial time on graphs of maximum degree $3$. We demonstrate that, with the exception of the complete graph on four vertices, each graph in this class has a minimum size feedback vertex set that is also an independent set.

Cover numbers by certain graph families

Abstract:We define the cover number of a graph $G$ by a graph class $\mathcal P$ as the minimum number of graphs of class $\mathcal P$ required to cover the edge set of $G$. Taking inspiration from a paper by Harary, Hsu and Miller, we find an exact formula for the cover number by the graph classes $\{ G \mid \chi(G) \leq f(\omega(G))\}$ for an arbitrary non-decreasing function $f$. After this, we establish a chain of inequalities with five cover numbers, the one by the class $\{ G \mid \chi(G) = \omega(G)\}$, by the class of perfect graphs, generalized split graphs, co-unipolar graphs and finally by bipartite graphs. We prove that at each inequality, the difference between the two sides can grow arbitrarily large. We also prove that the cover number by unipolar graphs cannot be expressed in terms of the chromatic or the clique number.
